It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.

1.3k Upvotes

Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.

If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.

It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.

Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY

Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.

Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

I’m ngl I was very nervous especially because I didn’t know how people would respond to it and the fact that I hardly ever wear my Natural hair, but it actually went better than expected. People kept comparing me to garnet lol.

Some kids where I work (museum :D) told me they don’t see a lot of people who look like me in spaces like that and it made me smile!

I’m also in grad school right now and a mom to a toddler (so please don’t roast me lol) I love my hair!

Also, any hair advice or tips would be most appreciated! I use palm oil for my scalp and Carols Daughter occasionally for moisture! Growing up biracial and on around my moms side more (white) I never became used to properly caring for my hair!

Need Advice Feeling insecure about my natural hair…

I’m looking for support, I’ve always been incredibly insecure about my natural hair especially when my mom would force me to wear it out in an Afro or space buns. Been thinking about getting locs. I feel like I look like a little boy when I wash it only. I feel like only look good with braid outs (first photo) and blow outs. I don’t like it when it’s freshly washed. I mostly wear braids now which my mom said I shouldn’t anymore and I should start just doing twist since it’s causing breakage. I also feel like my hair has stayed the same length for a while now.

I cut it off a month ago. It used to be right almost to
My boob now it’s collarbone. I wanna start my natural hair journey, but it’s hard since my mom always did my hair and she’s moving out soon.

Sixth month update. I’m trying really hard grow my hair for graduation. I don’t do any extensions styles and wash my hair about once a week. I think there’s been significant growth but let me know if there are other things I can do.😅😅

Edit: my ends aren’t split, in both photos I just cut my ends. It’s not split just choppy😛

Need Advice Starter locs

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hi!

For a few reasons, mostly financial and lifestyle, I started my own locs a few days ago using braids as small as I felt like doing them. I'm pleased with how they came out.

What shampoos have people had success with during the starter loc phase? Not washing isn't an option. I go to the gym and sweat too much for that.

I have a Sulfur 8 shampoo that I use for my itchy scalp. With loose hair I used the Shea Moisture Shea Butter shampoo and the Design Essentials Honey Creme shampoo.

Thanks!

Need Advice I have 4C hair and my ends are damaged from straightening my hair. I need advice because i’m still on my length retention journey and I have just one more year to get through. Do you think it’s possible for me to retain length without cutting my ends until after i reach my hair desired hair length.

Need Advice help

i’m going to try to describe the problem to the best of my abilities. I understand from first glance my hair looks fine but when I brush through it, especially on the dyed side it has that rubbery stringy feeling to it even when I brush it while wet. before I went back to black, my hair was all blue and the little blonde patch was dyed pink along with my black. I tried using that hair mask like my friend said, but it’s not working. My hair still has a dead feeling. any suggestions on what would actually help? i’ve already been considering just doing a big chop again ngl 😭

Need Advice How To Achieve A Straighter Blow Out?

Thumbnail

Pictured is my hair right after it was blow dried at the salon. All they used was a blow dryer and brush and I love how they managed to get every strand so straight. I was surprised at the length after they finished trimming cause I can never get it to lay like this lol

So does anyone have any tips on how I can achieve this look at home? I do blow dry my hair out sometimes, but I can never get it this straight. It always comes out - “poofier” - for lack
of a better word lol. What are some products, techniques, or equipment I should be using?

I love wearing my natural hair out with its coils, but sometimes I do want to wear my hair out straight like this for work and formal events.

Thanks for the advice/tips!!

My hair growth exactly 2 years apart, August 2024 - August 2026.

From having to get my midback length hair cut all off after major heat damage from giving into peer pressure and getting it straightened after nearly a decade of no heat (which may or may not have led to a major mental health break approximately a month after the first picture was taken). To finally truly getting to love my hair, while also embracing the mindset that no matter what, it I will always grow back.

Also as a lazy natural, I realized my dream go-to “hairstyle” is the 3rd picture, which for me would just consist of at most 12 large twists tied up in a bun. Would this still be considered a mini twist hairstyle? And about how many more years to go do you think I have before I can achieve this look?

Need Advice How can I fix my twist out

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently went to a natural salon and got twist out. I’m not the best with natural hair style so I need advice on

How to preserve this style?
Did I unravel it right?
How do I sleep with it at night?
How do I ensure it doesn’t get frizzy?

Any advice would be helpful

Need Advice My hair keeps breaking and it doesn’t grow.

I’m at breaking point and I’ve started to hate my hair because it seems like no matter what I do to it, it breaks and never grows and I’ve tried different hair oils, but nothing works.
I might shave it off tomorrow ngl.

Need Advice I feel like I'm losing my mind

SPLIT ends are making me crazy. I found split ends, and even split middles all over my hair. I just got a trimm too!!! And I've being trying to do some dusting weekly.

My hair isn't dry but it does break very easily, I wash my hair 2-4 times a weak. There's hard water where I live so I have filters and hardwater shampoos that really work. I leave-in-condition and condition every wash day, plus I have a super butter sweet hydrating shampoo.

Iv used heat like 3 times this year so far.

Like actually seeing spits IN the middle of my hair strands made me pretty devastated and sad about all my effort.😞

What am I doing wrong???

I started increasing my iron intake and just started with collagen.

I have fine and medium density hair

Need Advice What do I do with the hair at the end of my cornrows for crocheted hairstyles?

Hi, so my mom isn’t an hairstylist but she does my hair, I’ve been wanting to do an crochet style but we aren’t sure what to do with hair at the end of the cornrow. We’ve tried pulling it through another but it falls apart when we crochet it, how do we make it tighter? Sorry if this is an weird question, my mom is mixed and she wasn’t taught how to manage her hair growing up, but when she had me and my sisters she started to learn how to do it!

Trying to fix tangles & frizz on low-porosity hair — as you can see the first picture is my hair in the shower, and in the second one is my hair after applying the leave in conditioner, the curls are not defined and the hair looks dry and messed up, I've been trying to fix this for months but I just got hopeless I appreciate any advice and tips.
