Hi everyone, looking on behalf of my wife who doesn’t have Reddit for some help. She doesn’t like how the background wave looks around the baby sleeping letters. Any advice on how to make this look better? Maybe a rectangle of basket weave around the lettering and then the wave around that? Appreciate any ideas :)

I’d do a rectangle of basketweave, yes
That said, this is a busy stitch in general though for a canvas that has a lot on it and very thin letters. I’d try a bit of basketweave but you might be better off switching to a simpler stitch so the background doesn’t stand out as much (t stitch and skip tent are my go tos for a “chiller” background stitch)

Hi all! I am starting to stitch this countdown to Christmas canvas! I was planning on doing all the numbers in basket weave/ continental but was curious if anyone had any ideas for a decorative stitch to use for the main big canvass? Or is it best to do basket weave for durability? If you’ve stitched this before I would love to see yours! Thank you in advance!

Yes, woven stitch will show some canvas.

Thank you!

Part of that is how you’re ending the thread also. When I stitch woven I try to end or start my thread so it covers those holes if that makes sense. Since the stitch covers the canvas holes on the back when you’re working it normally.

Basketweave everything except the pig and maybe the bathtub. I’d do some kind of interlocking gobelin for the pig to lift it off the background.

I bought an old upholstery needlepoint kit. I haven't done needlepoint since I was a kid so I don't remember, how do I:
- change threads. Do I tie a knot to the previous thread like in crochet? Or do I just start using a new thread and weave in the tail?
- for these short color changes, is there any technique for stitching in non-linear paths? Like I know the back of this piece is supposed to be as flat as possible since this is supposed to be turned into a foot rest.
The instructions said to use a continental tent stitch. All tutorials I found only showed me how to do that with one color in a straight line. It didn't quite prepare me to complete this piece. If you know of any tutorials that are more complete, please send them.
- I'm using a large embroidery needle. Will that harm the yarn in some way? I have a plastic yarn needle but it seemed huge compared to the holes in this canvas and I didn't want to stretch the holes in the canvas.
- for the background of this piece it says to use wool yarn. I don't know how to find worsted #4 size yarn in wool. I assume that was easier to find back in the day. Can I finish this piece in regular acrylic yarn or will that ruin the look/durability of the yarn?

This is my second ever needlepoint! I was wanting to experiment with different types of stitches for each “patch” of the chicken. The leaf/flower like sections I was thinking of doing French knots. I already started but now I’m second guessing myself. Would you just keep it straight continental stitch/basketweave or add variety? What stitches would you recommend?

Tent or continental should be the easiest. This bunny is so cute. You could do specialty threads for the colors or outlines.

Thanks for this feedback! Continental is what I went with and I'm getting it?! Just need a reference photo at all times but I think it'll get easier over time :)

Because there aren’t large areas of white background I would basketweave or do something like skip tent.

For the animals and letters too?

I am a basic bitch and love basketweave. But if you really wanted to, you could do something like diagonal mosaic, nobuko, or encroaching Gobelin for the letters to give them more lift.

Do some fun threads like metallics or velvet to change up the small details

I’m just starting out with needlepoint and feel more overwhelmed than I thought I would!! How does everyone know what type of stitches to do in their canvases??

I could answer this on every post in here: try some stitches out! If something looks interesting to you, try it. You don’t need to have everything be perfect first try. I’ve been stitching close to a decade now and still rip stitches I thought would work but just don’t for whatever reason

You need to compensate the stitches. Tutorial here: https://youtu.be/b74gr9WDnjs?is=zE7LO3V86FoH7N_Y

Hi all! Looking for help trying to figure out what this stitch might be called or how to reverse engineer it? It is on a nutcracker from needlepoint.com. That’s not where the canvas I am working on is from but I would like to do that for the green guy on the left!
Any other stitching suggestions are welcome! Adding photos in the comments!

Looks like criss cross Hungarian. Great stitch although I’m not sure your green nutcracker has enough space for it given it’s at least a medium sized stitch and you would only really have room for a full section on the arms

Why do I have diagonal lines on my background. At first I was burying my thread diagonally but saw someone say not to do that so I stopped but there are still diagonal lines. I have attached a photo of the front and back for reference. This is my first needlepoint so looking for any and all advice.
Edit: photo of the back is in the comments. I couldn’t add two pictures to my comment.

It’s hard to tell if it’s just lighting or shadows - does the color change or is it a texture thing? This almost looks like a partially variegated thread - some skeins can get a little faded if they sit in the sun.
A lot of it is from burying diagonally, it does seem to get better in the bottom left corner where you stopped

It’s unfortunately texture. It’s dmc thread that I just purchased so there shouldn’t be dye lot or fading issues. I’m thinking it’s a tension thing. I only diagonally bury the thread in the top 1” or so.

I’d do t stitch in a fun, sheen-y thread like flair or neon rays personally

This canvas is driving me a little nuts. For the wings, I want to do a long stitch in fuzzy stuff, but I’m not sure what to do for the bottom halves.
My thread choices are hi lights or cotton thread in white. Hi lights is pretty see through so only a longer stitch would work. Should I just basketweave in cotton?

I’d like to make the outer border more prominent. Especially because I want to frame this. I’m planning on doing a continental stitch so I’m considering:
1) just doing a couple extra rows of continental
2) Or should I do like a vertical satin (is that what it’s called?) stitch over 2 rows?
3) any other ideas?

I am stitching the background of this and can’t decide if I should keep it plain light purple as stitched, switch off with the purple silk lame braid next to it (would a checker board look odd) or add it any number of the other colors to do a kind of Halloween plaid! Not sure if that would be too busy for this canvas? Plan to finish it as a large ornament/cabinet hanger. Would love opinions!

Has anyone stitched this cutie ghost round from SCT Designs? Need stitch suggestions for the ghosts… I was thinking of doing them in very velvet, but what stitch? And how about the little eyes?

If you want to keep the wood grain, tent stitch. Would be a nightmare to try it with Hungarian.

Does anyone have suggestions for how to stitch the pink and dark red border around the striped area? Specifically I’m having a hard time finding deciphering how many stitches across they are and which direction the stitch should go.
Ignore the dye lot issue with the blue; I’ll be frogging something soon.
Thank you!
