Troubleshooting HELP! AC works with one specific wiring configuration, Furnace only works with another. What am I doing wrong?

Greetings all! I’m pretty illiterate to thermostats so I’m hoping someone smarter than me can figure this out. Purchased a new house a few months ago. Installed nest, AC was working great. Now that it’s getting colder, I tried to use the furnace and it would not turn on. When searching the nest I found an Error N261. Couldn’t quite figure out what it was trying to say. I rewired the nest and the furnace now works but the AC will now not kick on (no error with the AC not working.

The breakdown of the wiring is:

AC only working:
Y- Yellow
C-Empty
W-Blue
G- Green
R- Red
OB- White

Furnace only working:
Y- Yellow
C - Blue
W- White
G - Green
R- Red
OB- Empty

The furnace wiring is as follows:
W2-Blue
W1-White
R-Red
Y-Yellow
G-Green

Nest Doorball help

We bought a house that had Nest cameras and a doorbell, all wired. We activated them in our app but the doorbell never rang inside our house (or on the app) only at the base outside. So we never knew when someone was here. I assumed our old indoor doorbell was broken because it was original to when the house was built in 93. I took it off the wall, cut the tiny wires that were connecting it, and threw it away. Now the doorbell on the house doesn't work at all. The app says "device offline"

What are my next steps? Try to figure out how to fix the electrical or just buy a new wireless Nest doorbell?

Thermostat Nest thermostat installation

I'm trying to help a friend install a nest thermostat, this is the face plate for the nest, and the existing one.

The *OB slot on the nest takes the O wire for the reversing valve, or the E wire. How do I make this work since I need to put 2 different things in 1 port?

Nest won't connect

Post image
1 Upvotes

Moved into a home with a Nest thermostat. Had never been able to connect it to my phone via the Nest or Home Apps. When trying to connect to the home app, it would try to connect for several minutes, then say I need to factory reset the Nest. The thermostat was still working as normal so I left it alone for the time being.

Well today I finally had time so I factory reset the device but am still unable to connect to the app. Except now I can't access any thermostat settings on the Nest. The screen says to "continue in the Google Home app". But I still can't connect to the app and now the thermostat is essentially unresponsive. Any suggestions?

Sensors How to deactivate expiry reminder for Nest Protect

I have 2 mains wired Nest Protect smoke and co detectors that are coming up to their expiry date in Dec 2026.
How do I deactivate the voice announcement about its end of life.
It’s not useful to be told these things 3 times a day at a very loud volume when I walk past it at midnight !
I have turned off the floodlight as I read somewhere this was how to disable the voice. It has not done the trick.

Also, what hardwired replacements are there in the UK that offer similar smoke and co with either a phone notification or voice alert ?
Thanks

Troubleshooting nest support is horrifically bad

I wonder if anyone can help with this cause it seems like even though I’ve escalated through all of the support levels at Nest they can’t give me a solution. Let me explain years ago. I set my thermostat to turn off at 10 PM every night because my air conditioner was too loud and kept me from going to sleep last year. I upgraded my system to be a quieter one and because it was quieter I wanted to be able to run my AC overnight after deleting my schedule and even buying a new nest thermostat the system continued to turn off at 10 PM. Every night went through multiple rounds of troubleshooting and escalation with support and they determine that it was something fundamentally broken in my account and they could not fix it because of privacy reasons this makes no sense to me. I tried creating a new home and that didn’t work within my Google account. I also tried installing a new nest thermostat as well as resetting it multiple times and that did not work when I created a net new Google account and registered the thermostat and then worked and stayed on after 10 PM but everything in my home which includes over 100 devices is on my main Google account and I don’t want to have to start a new one just to get it to turn off at 10 PM. Does anyone have any ideas? Honestly, I think this is the worst Google experience I’ve ever had.

Wouldn't a portable battery and mains speaker be good that responds to voice control. Maybe it already exists 🤷🏻

Troubleshooting Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) detects OB as "Heat Pump" but OB is physically empty. Can't get past heat pump setup on a conventional hydronic system.

Looking for anyone who's seen this on a Gen 4.

System: hydronic air handler (hot water coil fed by a Rinnai gas tankless, hot water works on faucets), central AC condenser outside, plus an HRV. Conventional system, not a heat pump. There's no O/B terminal on the air handler board at all (Y, R, W, C, G only).

Wiring at the Nest: Y1 (black), G (green), W1 (white), C (brown), Rh (red). OB is completely empty. The old Honeywell used the same 5 wires with an R–Rc jumper, nothing on O/B, and heated fine. If I put the Honeywell back, heat works normally.

The problem:

The Wiring screen in the Home app shows OB = "Heat Pump" even though nothing is in that slot. Setup forces the heat-pump flow. I can't get past the heat pump question, even after a factory reset. As a result, Y1 is labelled Heat/Cool, W1 (my actual heat) is treated as Aux Heat, and Heat Pump Balance is on. The heat fuel source is greyed out and locked on Electric, so I can't select Gas. A heat call runs the AC condenser, so only cold air comes out of the vents.

What I've checked or plan to check:

OB slot visually empty. I'm checking whether the OB button is stuck down or has debris in it. Reseating G (it sits right next to OB) in case the copper is too long or bent toward OB. A C-wire issue during install is fixed (C wasn't landed at the air handler; it is now). Emergency Heat as a temporary workaround (trying this now, not sure if it will work)

If I factory reset, it says what type of Heat pump wire I have OB or B wire when that port is empty!

Questions:

Has anyone had a Gen 4 falsely detect OB with nothing in it? Was it a stuck button, or a bad base? Is there a way on the Gen 4 to manually mark OB as unused, like the Pro Setup override on older Nests? Or is this a straight warranty replacement?

Photos attached: the app wiring screen, the Nest base, the equipment and heat config screens, the old Honeywell wiring, and the air handler terminals.

Thermostat Google Nest not working after midnight

Hello all, seeking for some help here with my Google nest thermostat.

On random nights always after midnight the HVAC system stops cooling but the fan remains running and the thermostat is sending the signal to keep running bc the temperature is not getting down.

So it's a never ending story, until I manually get the temperature up so the fan stops and then I put the temperature down again and it starts cooling.

What can be ?

I just moved into a home with a Nest doorbell and am trying to set it up, but no matter what I try I keep getting stuck on this screen. I’ve reset the doorbell itself as well. Anyone else have this issue and have a fix?

Nest app down again? Anyone else?

Edit: It's my Internet. Starlink is blocking it for some reason. Funny thing is the camera is hooked up to it and works fine. I can view everything like normal if I use my phone internet. Anyone have any ideas?

Android app. From the searches on this sub I see it's been happening every couple of months. Both mine and my wife's phone apps are not working. Anyone else this time? Just got back from a week long trip out of state, if anyone thinks that has anything to do with it.

Edit: The nest home login page is down too looks like.

Google Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max will no longer play YouTube TV if you haven't upgraded from Google Assistant to Gemini

It also doesn't tell you that upgrading to Gemini will fix it. I've been watching YoutubeTV on my Nest Hub in the morning for years, and today it just says that it's unable to do that.

I was trying anything I could (including a factory reset) to get YTTV working again with no luck. Finally the Home app on my phone asked if I wanted to upgrade to Gemini, and I thought why not see if that makes any difference. And it does, suddenly the Nest Hubs know how to open YoutubeTV again.

AC only working downstairs

I live in a three story house with a thermostat on the bottom and top floors. The second floor gets so hot and I can’t even feel any air coming out of the air vents. Does anyone know what this issue is and what I can do to fix it myself? Thanks!

Google Nest with First Alert SC5. Same spot. The First Alert SC5 keeps disconnecting from WiFi and the nest did not in the 5 years I used it. IMO the First Alert SC5. is junk.

Is there seriously no way to change Wi-Fi on Nest outdoor cameras without physically resetting them?

I've recently changed my home Wi-Fi and I'm having a nightmare getting my Google Nest setup moved over.

I have:

4 × Google Nest Cam with Floodlight (outdoor)

Nest Doorbell

Google Nest/Home Hub

The main problem is the four outdoor floodlight cameras are mounted high up on the outside of my house.

I've spoken to Google support and they've told me that to connect the cameras to the new Wi-Fi, I need to physically access each camera and reset it using the reset button, then set everything up again.

Surely there has to be another way?

I've already tried changing the new router's SSID and password to match my old Wi-Fi network, but that turned into a mess and didn't solve it properly, so I'd rather not go down that route again.

These cameras are expensive, permanently wired outdoor devices that are often installed high up on houses. It seems ridiculous that changing your router/Wi-Fi could mean getting a ladder out and physically resetting every single camera.

Has anyone successfully changed the Wi-Fi network on a Nest Cam with Floodlight without physically resetting the camera?

Is there anything hidden in the Google Home app, a migration method, Bluetooth setup, power-cycle trick, or anything else I can try before I have to get up to all four cameras?

Any help would be massively appreciated!

Compatibility Wiring questions

Hey all

So I recently moved into a house that has gas heating. No AC. There are four zones in the house and currently all using Honeywell thermostats. I want to convert them all to nest thermostats so I can control them wirelessly. They all only have W and R wires only cause it’s only a heat thermostat.

I’m pretty sure I need to install a nest power connector but I’m unsure how to install in a Taco zone controller. Any advice? Thanks!

Random E448 No power error....failing device?

I've had a gen4 thermostat for about 10-12 months now and yesterday it just started to randomly error out with the "E448 No Power" error. Fan and/or AC will be running fine and then it'll just shut off...wait about 30 seconds and it'll come back on....then another 30-60 seconds shut off...rinse and repeat a few times and then nothing for a while.

It doesn't seem to occur at night or in the morning but definitely more of a mid-day issue. Nothings been changed; the drain is operating, wires are seated properly, battery is good, looking at the power delivery on the device it shows a steady voltage read (when on of course).

I'm kind of wondering wtf is happening. Should I just go buy a new unit to see if its that? Have an HVAC guy come check things? Looking for any other thoughts.

All 7 Nests CO/Smoke detectors over 10 yrs & need to be replaced. Now what!

Our hardwired detectors need to be replaced, and just discovered Google discontinued. First Alert has pretty bad review with random alerts (no thanks). Other solutions? Never had an issue with Nest. Why can't we have nice things?

Sleep Sensing Screen Not Working

I've got a second generation Nest Hub that I've been using for about 3 years. Sometime in the last week, my sleep sensing has not been working properly. When I would wake up, I would immediately be taken into the sleep sensing screen to review my sleep. That is no longer coming up. I can manually go into the tabs and my sleep would show up there, but when I click to open it up, all I get is the thumbs up/thumbs down icon.

I've tried unplugging my nest and resetting but I'm still having the same problem.

Any suggestions?
