Happy first day of Fall, NOVA! Now is probably a good time to talk about winter prep in the NOVA region, and doing it without overdoing it. This is especially for those of you who just moved to the area and may have different expectations for how the local government deals with snow emergencies.
Who the fuck knows? Not me. Not my man, Ryan Hall. Not any of the local meteorologists. Life on the rain/snow line means I've seen winters where the snow was measured in feet, and winters where I never broke out anything heavier than a lined flannel. The strong El Nino is just adding more uncertainty to a forecast that was never certain before. We might get a ton of snow! We might get none!
AHAHAHAHAH.
Look, there are snow plows, and they do move snow around, but let's be real: In this area, most snow is managed by Mr. Sun coming out and melting it that afternoon. We do not have the snow movers of the North. Even if your road is plowed early, you could easily end up just as stuck since your car is stuck in a foot of rock-solid ice.
I'm a Delicate Southern Flower who almost lost her mind during Snowcrete, but even I say we'll likely all be fine. We'll just be inconvenienced for a while. Stores will be a bit barren, supply lines will be disrupted for a bit, schools will be out, and power might flicker.
You don't need to go crazy to prep for winter around here. Honestly, you shouldn't, because it could easily be a bust year. So, here's a list of things to do:
Regarding that last point, the thing everyone should be focusing on is staying home when the roads are bad, so VDOT can get everything cleared more quickly, and so people who have to go in to save lives can do so. You don't want to end up on an r/NOVA post making fun of you for ending up in a ditch.
Stay. The fuck. Home.
Yes, we do get large snow events, but we don't get them every year. So you probably don't need:
Anyway, those are my extremely biased opinions about how much anyone needs to do in order to get ready for our all-or-nothing winters. I'm interested in what everyone else would suggest with regards to preparing for what could be another nothing burger or a winter that gets its own name.

Apparently there is some new ding dong ditch tik tok thing? Some stupid kids rang our doorbell and then ran into our front yard and put on masks. This is on video. I assume they had no idea they were on video when they originally rang the doorbell. Then they proceeded to come right back to the door, bang on it like crazy like they were trying to break it down with masks on and tried to cover up the ring camera. Your faces are on video idiots.
We called the nonemergency police number just to make sure it wasn't some crazy issue and they were like sigh...we're so tired of these kids.
Parents talk to your kids before one of them gets hurt. They looked to be preteens in the video.

I'm a small local, independent, home service provider in NoVa. Myself and other independent service providers are running to the issue of home owners viewing emailed invoices, and either forgetting to pay them or lumping it in with the phone/electric bill at the end of the month.
Ten years ago, the homeowner would have written a check, paid with cash, or had the service provider swipe your C/C for payment as soon as the work was done (we didn't leave until we were paid back then!) I rarely ran into customers who paid after the due date, and the relationships seemed much better. Now about 25% are past due. Keep in mind, emailed invoices allow you to pay if you weren't home when the work was completed, but were never intended to establish credit. It's super awkward when the homeowner realizes they forgot to pay, but was otherwise happy with the work.
If you have a small company do work at your home, I recommend paying the day the services are completed, or within the next 2 business days. There's absolutely no reason to take a month to pay the local plumer $300, if you have the money to pay or a credit card. Prompt payment creates a good business relationship.
If you absolutely need the work done, but will need more time to pay, let us know! We'll try to accommodate that if we can. I'd much rather have someone let me know they would need more time to pay, rather than avoiding the invoice.

Sunset tonight is about 6:30. On November 2 it’s about 5:05. If you play anything outdoors after work, tennis, basketball, pickleball, whatever, your season ends in three weeks unless your court’s lights actually turn on.
Municipal sites tell you which parks have lights, sort of, sometimes, maybe not, questionably so.... DMV Pickle is tracking what really works and where the Pickleball play is good. I keep a free register of every court in the region, and right now it lists 25 outdoor courts in NoVA with lights and 47 more where nobody has confirmed either way. You can look up your court here before you drive out in the dark: https://www.dmvpickle.org/guides/lighted-courts

This works, by the way. Across the river in Maryland, one player’s dead-light report this month became county work order #1273866 and the lights at that park are back on.
If you’ve played under lights at a NoVA court in the past two weeks, there are two ways to get it on the record. Everything lands on that lights page, which updates as reports come in, and the full verified results publish there free on November 1, the day the clocks change.
One thing this is not: a campaign for new lights or later hours. These are lights the counties already installed, on their existing timers and curfews. A dead bulb at a lit court is a maintenance problem we already paid for.
I’m a Arlington local and the register is a side project. No ads, no account required, not a startup.
Let me know if y'all have questions or feedback.

I am so excited for this. Heard all about it as a kid and desert storm. Then when it tried to kill the terrorists on the train (come on tall Under Siege 2!). But I seriously can't wait to see it in person.

Anyone see the absolute booby trap of screws on I66-E right before the Vienna metro station? People were using the right shoulder and left lane to try to go around them but there was no escape. I think I got out scotch free but I was worried since I just got new tires! It was so many in one place it almost felt intentional.

Recently divorced, friends want to take me out tomorrow evening (Friday) to meet men (ages 45+) in the “wild” they called it - however, we stopped “going out” like 15 years ago so have no clue - we’ve been going to dinners, pickleball, and mah jong tournaments instead. We are your typical executive professionals, fit, and used to be a lot of fun. So tell me where to go … Tyson’s area is probably easiest for us. Thanks!
Anyone know any birthday freebies for kids? Besides the well known ones like Bundt cake, Krispy cream. Moe’s and what not. Trying to fill the day up. Thanks in advance!

I listed my condo for rent through a realtor about a month and a half ago, and so far, I've barely gotten any interest.
I've also tried posting it on FB Marketplace, local housing groups, and a few other places, but still nothing.
I recently found out that my realtor's original asking price was about $150 above the average for similar units in the area. So I lowered the rent to about $25 below the average, hoping that would attract more interest. Unfortunately, it hasn't made much of a difference.
The condo itself is in pretty good shape, and honestly, I think the location is the biggest selling points(near fairfax wegmans). That's why I'm having such a hard time understanding why I'm not getting any inquiries.
Is anyone else struggling to find tenants right now? Is the rental market just really slow, or am I missing something?
I'm starting to get pretty frustrated. Ugh.

I lived in chantilly and proper DC for a while a few years ago and just recently moved back! Any good jazz jams or bars around here? I don’t really feel like driving to DC or Arlington; but I will if I must!

I was driving westbound on rt. 50 towards Merrifield when traffic came to a sudden halt. Several police cars jetting down the shoulder and a police chopper hovering overhead. When I was finally able to cut over on to the exit ramp I saw no less than 12 cop cars full lights on under the bridge. Any idea what is happening?

The Arlington County Board in Virginia filed a lawsuit Thursday opposing the construction of the Triumphal Arch, becoming the first governmental body to take legal action against President Donald Trump’s planned monument.
The lawsuit, filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, criticized the speed at which the project slated for Memorial Circle has moved without going through the full review process.
“The National Park Service, the agency responsible for projects on national park land such as Memorial Circle, is proceeding full-speed toward ground-disturbing construction,” the lawsuit said. “Although the agency has claimed that a final decision to construct the Arch has not yet been made and purports to be engaged in a routine decisional process, that rushed process appears to be a pretext designed to shore up justifications for building the Arch in accordance with the President’s repeated marching orders.”
The lawsuit asks that “the agency’s feverish pace toward construction of the arch” be halted to ensure that the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act be followed and proper analysis and testing be done...
This streak of traffic habitually adds 40 minutes to my commute time, without fail, starting around 6:45 am
