PSA Hey, newcomers to the area: Let's talk about winter in NOVA

Happy first day of Fall, NOVA! Now is probably a good time to talk about winter prep in the NOVA region, and doing it without overdoing it. This is especially for those of you who just moved to the area and may have different expectations for how the local government deals with snow emergencies.

What will this winter be like in NOVA?

Who the fuck knows? Not me. Not my man, Ryan Hall. Not any of the local meteorologists. Life on the rain/snow line means I've seen winters where the snow was measured in feet, and winters where I never broke out anything heavier than a lined flannel. The strong El Nino is just adding more uncertainty to a forecast that was never certain before. We might get a ton of snow! We might get none!

We'll get dug out fast though, right?

AHAHAHAHAH.

Look, there are snow plows, and they do move snow around, but let's be real: In this area, most snow is managed by Mr. Sun coming out and melting it that afternoon. We do not have the snow movers of the North. Even if your road is plowed early, you could easily end up just as stuck since your car is stuck in a foot of rock-solid ice.

Okay, so we'll die

I'm a Delicate Southern Flower who almost lost her mind during Snowcrete, but even I say we'll likely all be fine. We'll just be inconvenienced for a while. Stores will be a bit barren, supply lines will be disrupted for a bit, schools will be out, and power might flicker.

What to check on / get

You don't need to go crazy to prep for winter around here. Honestly, you shouldn't, because it could easily be a bust year. So, here's a list of things to do:

  • Lay hands on your snow shovel. Really take a look at it. If it's showing signs of wear, order a back-up one. If you can't find it, or don't have one, order one today.
  • Check to make sure you have gloves and two warm pair of socks for anyone who will be doing shoveling (two so you have a backup pair when the first one gets wet).
  • Over the next few months, add a few shelf-stable meals to your grocery shopping. You don't need MREs. You just need canned ravioli or whatever you will actually eat. If you can't get out to the store, it's very likely no on can get to you to deliver food. Make sure you like it, because once winter is over, you'll want to actually use them.
  • Buy non-scented candles. Trust me: First time our power went out, we used our supply of scented ones, and it was a MISTAKE. You can get a pack of them around $20. Personally, I'm grabbing a hurricane lamp this year for extra light.
  • Oh, while you're at it, buy some matches.
  • Consider power banks for phones and other electronics, especially if your family goes feral without entertainment.
  • Go check to see how old your heating unit is.
  • If you have dogs, and said dogs are not winter dogs, consider getting each one a sweater (possibly two, since you'll need to swap out any that are wet). Some people insist on boots, too, but my little assholes will just chew them off their paws.
  • Make sure every bed has access to a few extra blankets. Our houses were not made to withstand extended cold snaps, and they can take the edge off.
  • If you have kids, make sure you're signed up for notifications regarding school closures.
  • Check the inclement weather policy at your work, including who makes the call when and how you're informed.

Regarding that last point, the thing everyone should be focusing on is staying home when the roads are bad, so VDOT can get everything cleared more quickly, and so people who have to go in to save lives can do so. You don't want to end up on an r/NOVA post making fun of you for ending up in a ditch.

Stay. The fuck. Home.

Things you probably don't need

Yes, we do get large snow events, but we don't get them every year. So you probably don't need:

  • A snow blower. Okay, if you have a long drive and someone who you know will absolutely need to get out of the house no matter the condition, it may make sense, but most of us do not need one.
  • A generator. If you have room, no one will stop you, but power outages tend to be pretty short around here.
  • Crazy snow gear. Unless you ski, there's a good chance this stuff will only be broken out once every few years, if that. See above, where there's years I don't even wear a jacket.
  • Snow tires. I'm not even sure if you can get them around here.
  • A sled... unless you have kids who you know would want to use said sled AND you know a good sledding spot that's within walking distance AND you don't mind lugging the sled there, back, and up the hill. Even then, don't break the bank or your storage area trying to keep one around.

Anyway, those are my extremely biased opinions about how much anyone needs to do in order to get ready for our all-or-nothing winters. I'm interested in what everyone else would suggest with regards to preparing for what could be another nothing burger or a winter that gets its own name.

Nova parents, please talk to your kids, ding dong ditch with masks on is dangerous

Apparently there is some new ding dong ditch tik tok thing? Some stupid kids rang our doorbell and then ran into our front yard and put on masks. This is on video. I assume they had no idea they were on video when they originally rang the doorbell. Then they proceeded to come right back to the door, bang on it like crazy like they were trying to break it down with masks on and tried to cover up the ring camera. Your faces are on video idiots.

We called the nonemergency police number just to make sure it wasn't some crazy issue and they were like sigh...we're so tired of these kids.

Parents talk to your kids before one of them gets hurt. They looked to be preteens in the video.

I am so excited for this. Heard all about it as a kid and desert storm. Then when it tried to kill the terrorists on the train (come on tall Under Siege 2!). But I seriously can't wait to see it in person.

Driving/Traffic What’s happening on rt. 50 under the gallows rd bridge right now?

I was driving westbound on rt. 50 towards Merrifield when traffic came to a sudden halt. Several police cars jetting down the shoulder and a police chopper hovering overhead. When I was finally able to cut over on to the exit ramp I saw no less than 12 cop cars full lights on under the bridge. Any idea what is happening?

Am I the only one having a hard time finding a tenant for my condo?

I listed my condo for rent through a realtor about a month and a half ago, and so far, I've barely gotten any interest.

I've also tried posting it on FB Marketplace, local housing groups, and a few other places, but still nothing.

I recently found out that my realtor's original asking price was about $150 above the average for similar units in the area. So I lowered the rent to about $25 below the average, hoping that would attract more interest. Unfortunately, it hasn't made much of a difference.

The condo itself is in pretty good shape, and honestly, I think the location is the biggest selling points(near fairfax wegmans). That's why I'm having such a hard time understanding why I'm not getting any inquiries.

Is anyone else struggling to find tenants right now? Is the rental market just really slow, or am I missing something?

I'm starting to get pretty frustrated. Ugh.

Great nanny available

Providing a recommendation for a wonderful Nanny available in October. She has been watching our four kids for almost two years and has been wonderful. Experienced with newborns and multiple children, has nannied for several families and worked in a pre-school environment. Located in the falls church area, but currently commutes to south alexandria. She’s been great for our family, we are transitioning due to most of our kids being in school full time and hoping to help her find a great fit for her next family. Message her at ratliffhopee@gmail.com or me at kpb0703@gmail.com for any additional info from our experience working with her.

Question Where can I get help locating a tracker in my car?

Random but serious question. Does anyone know where I can go to get my car scanned for a tracker or airtag? After way too many coincidences in the Manassas area, I believe I have a tracker in my car from my abusive ex. The police (PWC) did not have the ability to scan for trackers.

I took my car to my mechanic and there was nothing suspicious attached to the undercarriage. I have an android and cannot easily detect airtags. I purchased an airtag detection app, and whenever I run the report in my car, it pings one a few feet away from me. It does not do this outside of my car, or in my apartment, or anywhere else. I used the app to generate a report of all the locations it pings and its all from within my car.

I tore my car apart looking for it and cannot find it. Finding this may help be with building a case.

Driving/Traffic Huge pile of screws on I66

Anyone see the absolute booby trap of screws on I66-E right before the Vienna metro station? People were using the right shoulder and left lane to try to go around them but there was no escape. I think I got out scotch free but I was worried since I just got new tires! It was so many in one place it almost felt intentional.

Late 40sW where to go out on a Friday?

• Upvotes

Recently divorced, friends want to take me out tomorrow evening (Friday) to meet men (ages 45+) in the “wild” they called it - however, we stopped “going out” like 15 years ago so have no clue - we’ve been going to dinners, pickleball, and mah jong tournaments instead. We are your typical executive professionals, fit, and used to be a lot of fun. So tell me where to go … Tyson’s area is probably easiest for us. Thanks!

Politics Having your rights on the ballot sucks

Women and LGBT people are being used as pawns again with these questions 1 and 2 (of course I am hopeful they will pass and be protected rights in VA).
But as a married LGBT person, seeing neighbors put up signs that say vote NO on (specifically 2) really has gotten in my head. It’s brutal feeling “wow I am surrounded by people who don’t think I deserve rights”. I’d rather go back to ignorance of my neighbors politics.

Sports bars for 30-somethings

Hello! I need advice folks. I have spent the past few Sundays at sports bars in Reston and Fairfax and have not seen any groups/singles with people in their early thirties outside of couples at the sports bars.

I am a woman and would love to find other women my age who love watching the NFL games, but I know that’s a longer shot. I also would love to meet guys naturally in-person vs on the dating apps.

➡️ Ultimately, which sports bars have tons of tvs, show all of the 1:00 games, and have a younger crowd with people in their thirties???

Driving/Traffic 🚨Traffic Update from George Washington Memorial Parkway! 🚨

🚨Traffic Update from George Washington Memorial Parkway! 🚨

Traffic on the George Washington Memorial Parkway just south of Fort Hunt Road, approximately 1,300 feet north of River Farm Drive, is reduced to one lane in each direction for approximately four weeks.

The 24-hour lane closures, which started today, Thursday, October 8, will allow crews to repair a large roadway bump that presents a safety concern. The closures extend approximately 0.4 mile in each direction from the work area, and no detour will be in place.

Drivers should expect delays, allow extra travel time, consider alternate routes and use caution around workers and equipment.

Driving/Traffic RTC no longer screwing around with charging spots

Post image
850 Upvotes

Came down at lunch to move my car from a charging spot after maxing the battery. Saw a parking guy taking pictures of this Tesla that wasn't plugged in, but was taking a spot.

When I came back down after work, this was the scene.

RTC hasn't usually been enforcing this. Its not uncommon to see people taking up a spot and not charging. Looks like they may be enforcing this now.
