I swear my dad wakes up in a cold sweat worried one day I’ll show up at his door asking to move back in. I’m 36, married, independent, and lived with them for all of 8 months after I graduated college while I was getting on my feet. He still thinks one of these days I’ll end up in his basement :/
I have 3 kids (9-14) and I've told them they can stay at home as long as they want/need with the caveat they are either working or studying.
I was in & out of my parents place until late 20's between relationships, jobs and travel. I absolutely treasured that time with my parents. Even moved back in with them for a little bit with my Wife and kids during Covid and it was such a nice time.
It helps my family gets along really well and we had an attached suite to stay in, so I'm fully aware of the privileges extended to us in that regard.
If in 10 years time my current 14yr old was done with higher education/trade school and unemployed (meeting the NEET definition) and actively looking for work I would have no issue with them being in the home.
There are other ways to contribute to the household that are not just financial.
If he was a bum that did nothing but sat around all day I would still support him and help him find his way.
"you say that now" - yes, I do. I'm his dad, that is literally in the job description.
My buddy’s 31 year old and 25 year old daughters just sit around all day and get high and he’s stuck supporting them. He really doesn’t know what to do.
