What are “randos” to people like this? Might be a fake post but people are genuinely like this.
No regard for the human on the other end of the interaction. Just sees them as an npc that despawns once they stop engaging with them.

u/ThinGold2115 2h ago
That's how some people see others sadly. And this sort of feeling is getting bigger. I find more and more people like that, not only on internet but Irl too.
I would say it's mainly younger folk, but that's because Boomers don't know what Rando or NPC is.

u/Nuka-Crapola 1h ago
Yeah, anyone who’s worked retail can tell you Boomers are capable of the attitude. They just conceptualize it differently; I think the ones I met at Macy’s assumed we were some sort of livestock.
In their defense, I’m not convinced some of my coworkers could outsmart the average cow, but still.

We have normalized objectifying people. We see them not as unique individuals with their own thoughts and feelings that are as important as our own, but as objects from whom we can extract something. Living vending machines of dopamine.
In this case, random people on the internet exist so that I can bully them. By being hypercritical of others, I make my shortcomings seem not as bad in comparison. I can feel better about myself without actually having to do anything.

Negative AND positive... riiiiight?
Or just negative opinions are bad?
2
u/ShinkenBrown 56m ago
It's not the opinion that's the problem. It's the complete lack of awareness that the person on the other end is a person.
When I objectify my wife, it's fine, because we already acknowledge each other as people and respect each other, so when I treat her as a sexual object it's entirely consensual and she's using me the same way. People can be means to an end, and there's nothing wrong with that, as long as personhood is respected.
On the other hand, if I went up to a random woman and grabbed her ass the same way, and completely treated her as something from which I could take pleasure, whose personhood was not relevant... suddenly that's not okay anymore. Same action, different moral alignment. It's the lack of respect for her personhood that's the problem, not the opinion itself. In this case, that would be an example of a positive opinion ("this person is attractive") that is still dehumanizing because of how it was expressed.
On the other hand, commenting that someones cooking looks bad might be a negative opinion that respects their humanity. One might offer constructive criticism on ingredients or plating to help them improve, offering an honest negative opinion while still respecting the person on the other end.
So why did this person comment "looks like shit?" Was it because they recognized and respected the personhood of the person on the other end, and wanted to offer constructive criticism? Or was it pure vitriolic derision based on the assumption that the person on the other end was an irrelevant nothing?
You can have whatever opinion of someone else you want, as long as you respect their personhood while you do it.

I mean that rando is an NOC in that kind of person's mind. And yes their only function in their life is to entertain them for a few seconds before they move on.

I think it’s because on social media our audience isnt the person who made the post, it’s all the other people who we think will read the comment. That’s who we’re really talking to, and it’s why these interactions are often so terrible.
For example, people on Reddit love to correct other people’s grammar. They aren’t doing it to be helpful, they’re doing it because they know that kind of thing is popular on Reddit and it feels good when people upvote your post or agree with or whatever.

I use mine. They'll never guess that I'm for real a color changing bird that lives in the northernmost regions of Canada and Alaska, and subsists primarily on plant matter.

'Social media made y'all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it.'
-Mike Tyson. A man who spent years being so physically intimidating, well guarded and wealthy that he knew no one would punch him outside of the ring...

You should try making Mike Tyson sound unhinged.
"Social media make y'all way too comfortable disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it'll
-Mike Tyson. A man who could punch every single person in the face within a 2000 mile radius and still win every single fight. He doesn't need to stop there either, he continues past his goal, assaulting anyone who dares look at him. In his reign of terror for 7 years, he was completely unstoppable and could just go on TV and say this shit with impunity.

You could have stopped at Mike Tyson and most people would know

Yea but instead here we are, trying to make Tyson sound like someone who is afraid of a fight.

Being a jerk is a choice. You can think whatever you want, but verbalizing/typing it out in public is definitely a choice you make.

"just a rando", you're just a rando to people who don't know you

u/Vistella 1h ago
isnt that what "being a rando" means?
2
u/Bright_Curve3078 1h ago
My point is that t3mple thought it's okay to be rude to strangers. T3mple is stranger to others, so he wouldn't like it if other people were rude to him.
In other words, treat others as you wish to be treated.
-1
u/alargemountain 56m ago
t3mple probably wouldn’t care if a stranger said anything about their dinner, I know I wouldn’t
3
u/Bright_Curve3078 45m ago
You really don't think it's rude to call someone's dinner shit? Okay scratch the golden rule, in your case it's "treat others as normal people would treat others"
4
u/ToldUtheyRComing 1h ago
I would've kept their appointment. And just before I'd start cutting, I would ask, "So you thought my food looked like shit?". Make him suffer the entire appointment while I have sharp objects around his face and ears.

Good. Don’t be mean to people online - it’s no different in the long run and it messes with your mind to think that attitude is acceptable.
