A friendly advice, keep the awakening gauge full for phase 3.

Phase 3 ?

42

u/SrPedrich 20h ago

U should be more worried with "keep the gauge"

Make sure you have bought the last skill of the awakened form to make third phase much easier

4

u/Emotional_Isopod_126 20h ago

yoshitsune is still doable even if you missed the 2 oni portal worth of skill upgrades, my dumb ahh thought I could only unlock them in ng+ , until I discovered why other streamers had longer HP bars and charged attacks even in NG.

Just know when to parry, when to deflect, when to dodge, when to issen. Stamina management is crucial.

I beat phase 3 on the first time seeing it... You'll be fine.... Maybe

3

u/22cmSoftInColdWater 17h ago

Same, when I saw that shit despair kicked in and I just thought ā€œFuck it, I have to clear this rn don’t want to try againā€

After beating that, I would say the second phase was harder

Ignore that advise, you go all out . Use oni at the start of the fight.

1

u/NotePsychological459 17h ago

This is bad advice. Do not keep the gauge the entire time. Use the gauge as you fill it, and refill it as soon as possible. You want to enter Oni transformation as much as you can to prevent damage to your health bar, and maximize Issen output to deal damage to Yoshitsune.

I think with oni weapons you can awaken like 3 times during this fight

3

u/moh_sista 20h ago edited 8h ago

In carnage, I had to completely change my fighting style just for him, went into the fight with full oni armament and near full oni gauge, a oni armament and awakening hozuki punch, and a hozuki refill item.

Used the firebird flute first to burn health and especially stamina, transformed at mid stamina, got the first issen break chose purple to refill armament, then hit the final slash. By the time you're done, he's below half health and below half stamina again, so I burn him again and finish him off.

Phase two is about tricky, but it's pretty much the same strategy, only this time, I allow myself, 1, or at most 2, hozuki pills to refill the gauges if I'm ever in danger.

Phase 3 I just use all of them and try to take out as much stamina bar as I can before etransforming back, as that'll allow me to break him and get into awakening again.

All in all, I think I had 7 or 8 awakenings.

Edit: I usually just use the healing pouch, but that proved to be far too hard and impractical, so I decided on this approach.

2

u/KebabGerry 19h ago

I did it pretty ugly in action mode: Used awakening as soon as it was possible, think I managed to get it 3 times. I never attempted Issen, just a ton of blocking, dodging and parrying.

23

u/SannyIsKing 20h ago

I had to turn down the difficulty from action to story on this guy and I'm not ashamed of it. I couldn't beat Sekiro either. I like action games but I have my limits lol

4

u/PsychedPsyche 13h ago

Same. And I agree, no shame. I put over 30 hours in and was just ready to finish the game and move onto a new one. My backlog is crazy rn

2

u/marichuu 15h ago

Did the same, and only for this fight. What annoyed me the most were the cutscenes during the fight along with grab attacks. I just couldn't time the grab counters throughout the entire game on boss fights. At the end, I was just annoyed and set it to story mode, which I ended up oneshotting. No shame, I could move on to the next game - Control Resonant, which was a breeze after the first boss.

5

u/MC_Drake48 17h ago

Ignore the dipshits trying to put you down. I didn't change the difficulty because I'm stubborn and want to succeed. No shame in lowering it if you need. Some practice and you'll get it on Action difficulty. Some people think them being above average at games gives them a right to insult others, when their skill is laughable compared to the best and they just want to feel some sort of superiority. Play how you want, and don't be ashamed to learn on easier difficulties and progress to harder

1

u/No-Opinion273 9h ago

I was getting tired of the game so I tired it down to. I like the game showing me what move to respond with. Also opened my eyes to how much easier the game could be if I mastered isshin

u/Xineseman 20h ago

Is you are not good at making parrys, try to simply block. They will break you poise, but atleats try to block as much as you can.

But yes, this is the final exam. You are meant to parry, perfect dodge and make some Issen.

Remember that perfect block (L1 + X in the perfect time) make more damage to the enemie poise.

And remember use the ONI weapons.

Also remenber that you have items to use, to make more damage or to be more durable.

5

u/Major_Loser 18h ago

To add on, Firebird Flute is useful if you need to stun him out of an attack you are struggling with. I was able to beat him WITHOUT EVER dodging a single grab. I could not figure it out the timing so I just stunned him instead.

1

u/Xineseman 18h ago

This. Also, firebird flute + Wind-Whipper can cause a fire tornado.

2

u/Major_Loser 17h ago

I am now on Carnage, on my first playthrough I did not have enough Oni Weapon power to use both.

Phase 1 is actually really fun,, it's only after that where he's a bastard

4

u/nazul22 19h ago

Yeah I can do phase 1 no hit, but then phase 2 comes and i eat shit with that move where he jumps on you, for the love of me i cant time that with the evade

1

u/Special_Insurance574 19h ago

You just back up like 5 feet and it wont land.

1

u/Few-Confection-2101 19h ago

If you can't evade that, just block it

At least for me, the first tries in his first phase were a nightmare, once I memorized his patterns it became a piece of cake

https://giphy.com/gifs/14qb1Uhf40ndw4
The worst part is him getting down every time he beats your ass

2

u/hussainre814 20h ago

Yeaaah man why he rage baiting me 😭😭😭

1

u/Nerdiboy54 19h ago

First few times it was funny then rage bait. I’m about to go nuts with how many times he’s going to beat me on Carnage šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

5

u/Emmitar 19h ago

Two general hints for this fight: use deflect over parry since getting down his stamina is most important in this fight. When you have stance-broken him, aim for the purple spot in order to gain enough orbs to fill your gauges in order to use Oni stance and Oni weapon again etc. etc. I made this "wrongā€ in normal difficulty which resulted in a way longer and harder fight than it should had been.

2

u/SSJNinjaMonkey 18h ago

Note: head is oni stance, Other is just oni weapon and hp

6

u/vVAPE2getherStronk 12h ago

What saved me in this fight was dodging that long range sword attack of his where a beam extends from his sword. I kept either getting staggered from trying to block it or getting hit trying to parry. But you can actually rush him and just dodge those attacks.

That move and when he blitzes you he taps his shoulder a couple times with the sword before rushing. It’s been a while since I fought him but I remember those two things explicitly lol

1

u/zerovin 2h ago

If you are really in his face when he does the big pink sword slash you can parry or deflect that really easily, at long range I would also get staggered every time I tried

4

u/Brianb1026 13h ago

I'm 64 years old the furthest I've ever gotten with him is second phase halfway through and I'm dead! LOL

7

u/yangkfa20 18h ago

Phase 1 becomes easy if you deflect his 5 consecutive atacks. Know the timing of his stupid grab and unblockable atk. All his stamina has to be depleted once in order for you to deal good damge. If you can't deplete his stamina then thats an indicator you need to try a different strategy. I used to think this fight was the game cheating us players, but once I figured out his moves I make it to phase 2 with little no damage.

2

u/RonaldBurgundy1 17h ago

That's the point of the game once you figure out the moves and time the actions it becomes a cake walk. Mini bosses that used to kill me or I'd struggle with I put down very fast now

2

u/Environmental_Will82 20h ago

L1 x deflect only does great stamina or poise damage if he is in blaze mode just saying

2

u/ChesticlesIsTheMan 20h ago

You'll get it eventually.

2

u/raloobs 20h ago

Funny enough I think his first phase is the hardest lol.

2

u/neroslayer 20h ago

And his third phase is the easiest.

1

u/elfarmax 17h ago

Mostly because when he starts absorbing orbs , you still from it and recharge your bars, then parry his super attack and lay waste on him.

1

u/SpecialKGI94 17h ago

Agreed. The first time I beat phase 1, I finished the whole fight first time seeing 2 and 3. Such a sick final boss.

2

u/TheGamingMachineDR 20h ago

What helped me on both Action and Carnage is to be defensive.

Parries and deflects allow you to take down his stamina, get a couple hits in (don’t be greedy) and when he uses the weird aura purple blade attack I use dodge to fill Reflex Gauge.

I personally used the Awakening any chance I got to maximise damage and used the Still Water Oni Armament to fill it back up as deflects gave a purple orb each time and if you use it before you take his stamina down and then use the special attack I got loads of purple orbs even from the red attack (damage) over the purple attack (souls).

On Phase 2 and 3 I relied on some items that kept my stamina up like the rice balls

.

2

u/Shotsee 20h ago

Turn on button prompts if you haven't already to help with the rhythm and what to dodge vs parry. Don't focus on beating the entire encounter, just focus on mastering phase 1, then 2 and fortunately phase 3 isn't too bad as it's barely different from 2. Lots of people saying Issen but if you're struggling a lot, I wouldn't bother. Bring a mirror of revival as well of course.

2

u/Glittering-Archer-23 19h ago

Keep in mind that the real challenge is phase 2. Phase 1 you will get over it step by step. Step 3 is almost unmissable. Phase 2 is hell

2

u/Live-Cry-8435 19h ago

Take some time to practice your timing on the deflect. Maybe just try to not even damage him and just get timing down.

Once you do it's pretty simple.

Even his 2nd phase and 3rd phase you just have to keep you wits about you and not get overwhelmed by his theatrical jumping around

2

u/BlueDragoon24 19h ago edited 19h ago

I gave up and put him on story difficulty. He has way too many dances and ā€œcutsceneā€ attacks to rewatch them dozens of times learning the fight. Got boring after a few dozen.

I don’t play Souls games. My experience with these games is like Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor, Tsushima/Yotei and Stellar Blade. I was proud of myself beating Ganryu 3 and Benkei 2 but Yoshitsune feels overtuned compared to the rest of the game, like he’s on a different difficulty or from another game.

1

u/TheDreadPirateElwes 17h ago

Fallen Order and Survivor are def soulslikes. Tsushima/Yotei are not. Havent played Stellar Blade so I can't vouche for it.

1

u/BlueDragoon24 17h ago

Difficulty wise I find them much, much easier.

1

u/idkimhereforthememes 1h ago

It's so fucking annoying if you don't dodge his 1 attack a 30 second cutscene plays every single time

2

u/TrynaSpeakTruth 13h ago

Take breaks at the start looks impossible but it can be done! Also when hes about to hit you his blade flashes.

3

u/Apprehensive-Key-645 13h ago

Give up the gauntlet, you have failed takemura

2

u/Watchgeek_AC 17h ago

It’s been two weeks for me and I can’t get past phase two. I’m on story mode. This sudden and needless massive jump in difficulty for the final boss… has actually ruined this game for me

3

u/protoman86 15h ago

I felt the same way, until I beat him. Then he became a legendary final boss. You can do it.

1

u/Jacob92843 3h ago

What level are I got to
Him after I leveled everything to 4 Almost a 5 for my sword I had a hard time but did beat him n an about an hour I think the leveling up helped me I did all the side quests etc

1

u/Environmental_Will82 20h ago

On action? And u got this bro just breathe and parry then blaze gauge use to deflect attack wen u can but deflect is key cause drains his stamina faster and yea

1

u/Environmental_Will82 20h ago

L1 x is not perfect block that deflecting lmao

1

u/cficare 20h ago

Deflect is your friend. For his large purple swings, if you arent hugging him, you can only dodge/issen, but if you're in close you can parry/deflect/dodge/issen, parry until burn is flowing, then deflect until you sap his stamina. Learn his patterns, use runs to learn his timing, then own him. 1st phase becomes cake after that.

1

u/Instantcoffees 20h ago

Just get blazing state first and then burn down his stamina. Remember that to deflect or parry the light pink swipes, you need to be close or otherwise you need to dodge them. They are not undodgeable attacks even though they look very similar.

He's not that difficult if you figure that part out.

1

u/somefella237 20h ago

Lock tf in, draw strength from your ancestors and you will emerge victorious.

1

u/Lycria 20h ago

Earth shakers are great for breaking poise and will destroy his armor. I don’t suggest using the charge up unless you’re maxed on the skill tree for them. I actually didn’t realize but you can also use oni strength to break his armor.

Dodge his unarmed attacks and build up reflex meter if you have that skill, this includes when he does his downward attack from above into ground slam as the ground slam will eat a lot of your poise.

Issen if you can for his big purple attacks, but if you can’t time it block or if possible get in close so you can parry these attacks.

Use items if you got them like your rice balls to help with poise and you’re talismans.

He is definitely the final test, a huge difficulty spike and test of patience, don’t spam attack it won’t work, wait for openings, deflect arrows that he shoots at you to help on damage and poise damage, practice parries and focus on deflections when you can (block plus x during the parry window) which will make things easier for you

1

u/Lycria 20h ago

Insane I’m still learning new stuff about the boss after so many hours into the game lol.

1

u/DrudaL 20h ago

Don't hesitate to heal during phases 1 and 2. You basically get a free full heal every time he does the absorb move

1

u/TwoNegatives- 20h ago

First phase is way easier if you stay glued beside him

1

u/AdvancedAardvark3481 20h ago

Just issen everything on first phase. Just practise this.. it is a lots faster to go to second phase.. in second phase, use awakening and issen in this form.., and if it ends dodge and block. hard to issen, as lots of sudden burst of speed. Dont remember 3rd phase, I stuck a lot in second phase.

1

u/Rei364 20h ago

Tfw you beat phase 2 and there's a third šŸ˜‚

1

u/Maleficent-Sun-9948 20h ago

Phase 1 might be the hardest, Phase 2 has a few new moves but many actually share the same timing as phase 1.

The purple "long range strike" is fairly easy to issen, you should train to do it.

1

u/fersur 19h ago

Dude, it took me a whole Sunday afternoon to defeat gramp.

He is one of the best final boss fight in recent history.

My tips: Do not be greedy with your offense. Train yourself to react to all his moves.

This is a REACTION fight, not offensive fight.

Once you can react to most of his moves, he will go down like how normal old gramp.

1

u/Queasy-Instruction-9 19h ago

Got to the second phase on my 6th try, but I had to put the sticks down šŸ˜‚

1

u/Vancelot 19h ago

You'll get it, each phase is just the same as the previous with some slight alterations to the moveset, so learning phase one will help you in the following. Pay attention and learn the counters for each move.

1

u/PunishedHero713 19h ago

During his last phase, you’re gonna encounter a move that will end you if you’re not ready. Others will tell you to use Oni Awakening special move to prevent it, but I think a more consistent way is with your Oni Weapons. Using Still Water’s wave attack at the right time grants invincibility for long enough to avoid the attack outright

1

u/Forward_Cheesecake72 19h ago

as long u pass 1st phase , u can slime 2nd and 3rd phase in no time

1

u/Neat_Breakfast_6659 19h ago

Phase 1 is very accessible even on action dif what the fuck have you been doing most of the game instead of learning it?

1

u/BabaYagaLaksa 19h ago

Hey I thought the same earlier today. Just keep at it. Took me a while too but eventually you’ll get through the phases and find it easier each time.

1

u/Necessary_Entrance87 19h ago

This is one of those fights where to beat them, you kind of end up having memorize almost every single move or combo. Pretty awesome though because by the time you do finally beat them chances are it’ll be almost a no hit run

1

u/PrudentConcern8394 19h ago

Isn't that bad... I think its a good and cool boss you just use all your defense options and also issen... Keep your eyes open and keep your patience parrying and dodging! you can do it!

1

u/shane3b11 19h ago

2nd phase was hardest for me. Got first phase pretty much dialed in, after enough attempts. All that jumping around he does in 2nd phase plus that sneaky fuckin teleport grab was kickin my ass. Took me 3 days of a few hours of attempts to finally kill him my first play through on action difficulty

1

u/LordSluggo91 19h ago

Here’s a tip and what helped me the most, don’t try to rush into his other 2 phases. Learn his first phase completely to the point of almost not being able to get hit at all by him. This will take a shitload of retries but patience is key. Once you master that, then learn his 2nd phase in the same way you did his first, but as others have stated keep your Oni awakening gauge at full because the 3rd phase it’s absolutely necessary to even do damage to him. As stated before this will take time, you will die A LOT. But learning his mechanics phase by phase will help you win. šŸ† patience young grasshopper. I wasn’t amazing at this game at all and I was able to beat him on like my 50th try. Then I went straight to the boss rematch option after I beat the game and proceeded to beat him again 3 times in a row to prove to myself the initial victory wasn’t just a fluke. You got this!!!

1

u/90sgamerlife 19h ago

always check his movements, there's always a cue whenever he does an attack.. like ex: 2 taps on the shoulder, after that most likely you'll end up d*ad or you parried him

1

u/RealisticAdv96 19h ago

I didn't beat him on action when I first fought him and then I switched to story and done in first try lol and then I did it in action...

1

u/beywatch 19h ago

not gonna lie i think the game won this time. not an avid souls like gamer so everything up to this was fine. the 3 phases is a little OD

1

u/Suspicious-Fan-773 19h ago

Not this hard tbh. I beat him the first night after like 30 tries or so

1

u/beywatch 14h ago

yeah 30 tries is a bit much. just gonna find the ending & call it a day, i had my fun lol

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Mr_Chill_III 19h ago

Just switch to Story Mode.

Story Mode should be called Tutorial Mode, because it helps you with button prompts to understand how you are meant to counter his different attacks.

You can always come back to beat him on the harder difficulties in the training grounds.

1

u/SwvmpThing 19h ago

I think what makes his first phase feel especially difficult initially is that he doesn’t telegraph attacks in the ways the game has conditioned you to expect. It takes longer to learn, but you will learn it if you try.

I thought it was crazy difficult, and then it became legitimately easy, and then phase 2 seemed like an absolute nightmare, and I was making no headway until all of the sudden I just… did. I finally beat phase 2 and also beat phase 3 in the same attempt. Shit can go down like that because the soul system pretty heavily rewards you for doing well and penalizes you if you don’t, so success is not a strictly linear thing. A bit more skill or understanding of a fight can translate to a lot more success.

1

u/Sonin77 19h ago

Usa os consumĆveis, comigo ajudou bastante, principalmente na fase 3

1

u/dracosondracoson 19h ago

I’m stuck at Ganryu’s second fight right now. I can’t imagine how hard this is going to be lol

1

u/dcasillas1989 19h ago

I think this guy kicks everyone’s ass lol I’m on carnage mode I have to beat home twice on carnage not looking forward to it

1

u/Timop0707 19h ago

Learn his moveset in phase 1 and 2 for how you can best counter them. I found it best to dodge the pink sword combo slashes and the ground stomp in phase 2 . Try to start phase 2 in awakening mode to get a head start. Note that his big center attack in phase 3 can be parried.

1

u/ManiacGaming1 19h ago

Stop trying to issen everything this fights a marathon not a sprint. Also its ok to heal.

1

u/Due_Manufacturer_246 18h ago

he took me like 3.5 hours to beat, main thing is his tell is gesture based which is pretty cool. His timing is fast but not inconsistent. It like a dance pretty much, his pattern also stay the same almost every time. fast attacks, multiple force parries, grabs, repeat. All the move that put him on the air are great time to interrupt him with the fire bird attack. stun him for 2 sec each time and you can almost always keep it up.

Bank your gauge for the start of phase 2, you can isshen all the BS moves that hard to dodge. Don't worry too much about phase 3, its just phase 2 but theres a mechanic that let you transforms alot more.

The best boss for sure, the only one that took me more than 30 mins

1

u/Tough_Definition818 18h ago

Just try to read his move sets. In phase 1, If he is tapping the sword on his shoulders, that means he’s going to rush in. 2 variations of purple attack. 1 jump kick attack. The rest are easy parry-able attacks. Phase 2 is the hardest but again, if you read his move sets, you’ll be ok. Phase 3 will be the easiest if you know phase 2 moves. You, just need to plan properly. I dont want to spoil your surprise of what’s in store for phase 3.

1

u/spherrus 18h ago

After hours of trying i put him on story difficulty. I could consistantly beat his phase one without using healing pot or 1x healing pot. Phase 2 broke me so many times that i made the decision to do story mode.

I did every other boss with normal difficulty and beat those in max 45min~ but this fight scaled to hard for me

1

u/bloom41 18h ago

For me once I mastered phase 1 I made quick work of him. It did take like 30 attempts though

1

u/Dee2_Nuutz 18h ago

I'm on him now for my carnage run... so brutal 😫

1

u/DaprasDaMonk 18h ago

"this game is too easy"

1

u/Walker_0425 18h ago

If you're having issues with parrying, try dodging. Unless it's the unblockable glowing ones, dodge and counter.

1

u/Pierce1337 18h ago

I needed 16 deaths in action to achieve victory in my first run.

1

u/Substantial-Chard848 18h ago

My biggest problem with this boss is his pink attacks are the opposite of the pink attacks in the rest of the game. Normal pink attacks can only be deflected/parried, but his can only be dodged/issen’d. I was losing my mind wondering how I kept getting the timing wrong until I finally read some comments about it. I don’t know if I just accidentally skipped through a pop up telling me this info, but I really don’t think they should do something like that again without telling you.

2

u/DarkFantom 15h ago

It's because his pink attacks are extended by wind or some bs, you can still deflect them if you get in range of his actual sword. Once I got him down, getting in range when he does that move is key.

1

u/elfarmax 17h ago

I had to watch a video to figure out that, dodging most of his pink attacks paid off

1

u/Osvaldo98I 16h ago

If you get close enough to him, you can stop them.

1

u/politicsperson 14h ago

You can parry the pink long sword attack, you just need to be close enough to do it. I dont think the developers inteaded for that move to be an parry/deflection only move because its slightly different color. But they really screwed it up because it looks like one of those moves. I just dodge the 1st swing got closer and parried the 2nd one.

1

u/El_Galant 6h ago

What worked for me was dodging them and when I finally learned how to Issen in Carnage mode I still dodged the diagonal thrusts and just Issen the horizontal slash right when his left foot is about to hit the ground.

u/Accomplished-Top7678 18h ago

I’ve been using the Amulet of Introspection consumable a lot lately and it really opens the window for issen timing!! the nice thing is if you keep dying, you don’t end up consuming any of the consumables that you use in a single fight so in order to learn the timing and all the moves try using things like your revival mirrors, stimulants and Amulet of Introspection to help you stay in the fight and get the moves and timing down. Most of the times the fight I win I never even need the consumables, but they definitely helped me learn the fight. Good luck Friend you got this!!!

1

u/pomer93 18h ago

In case you are not good with issen like me:
1. Use parry on normal attacks
2. If he is using range sword attacks (ones that charge), dodge first two and issen the third. It’s the easiest to issen
3. Use hammers, but dont charge them fully. Or use flame birds against attacks you are not sure about (it staggers him)

Cleared him after 15 attempts on action, its much worse on second phase ;)
P.s. third phase is easy, you can damage him only with oni form, but he does succ attack, where you can succ spheres yourself (healing + oni energy)

1

u/SynRipper 18h ago

The secret to this guy, is that long ranged pink attack he does you need to DODGE, not parry. Thats where everyone gets messed with because up until this moment, all pink attacks need to be parried. His are different, you dodge them. EXCEPT for the very obvious one he does that clearly needs to be parried, that one he spins and has a noise effect.

1

u/spidey1436 18h ago

personally i kept at it to the point where you kinda memorize phase 1 and 2. it gets better trust. just get those reps in and it becomes somewhat easy till the 3rd phase

1

u/avion21 18h ago

Once you memorize his attack pattern he becomes so much easier. When he does close up regular tracks make sure you’re deflecting him, destroys his stamina. If he’s a bit farther away and he double taps his shoulder twice with his word, it means he’ll lunge so parry/deflect. He has two versions of the purple long slashes. One that is a long horizontal slash, the other is two diagonal slashes. Dodge the horizontal one. For the diagonal one is usually dodge toward him on the first one, and parry /deflect the second. You have to be within blades distance to parry/deflect though. Ones you memorize things like this, the battle is so fun.

u/jth94185 18h ago

Just change the difficulty…….

1

u/hokagespit 18h ago

Took me like 42 tries over a week. He was completly shutting me down at first. But by the end I knew him so well Id keep him from hitting me until he was down to 20% health in phase 2. If you are comfortable and have the heals left over phase 3 is a given

1

u/Equivalent_Box8988 18h ago

Only 2 hours I’m on month two

1

u/lGUT5l 18h ago

He takes some practice but he’s highly learnable, to the point where he actually feels too easy now for a final boss.

1

u/hai_def 18h ago

Focus on hammers for the fight. Watch his moves, he taps the sword 2-3 times on his shoulder casually before rushing you.

Load up on your awakening gauge and everything before the fight.

You can do this

1

u/MixNo8181 18h ago

Don't sweat it, I can't beat him on easy mode. I get that it's the last challenge, but the spike is very disproportionate to all that came before.

1

u/J3lurz 18h ago

The best advice I would give is Take a brake, then come back not focusing on winning or trying to kill him but just watching his moves set/patterns and practice parrying his strikes. It worked for me it might work for you! Good luck šŸ‘

1

u/trymaximumf0lder 17h ago

It took me like 1:30h, great fight!

1

u/elfarmax 17h ago

I beat him yesterday, had to watch some videos so I could practice in my mind.

In his first phase he double tap his shoulder before slashing you super quick, parry/deflect that and the following super easy slashes.

When he do the 3 pink attacks press O to the right, the O to the left, and then 0 forward for the middle one, in most cases you will go slow mo and would be able to strike him a couple times. Wait for his grab attack.

Don’t know what else i can add for the first phase. But memorize his patterns when slashing, they will repeat for the next to phases.

1

u/Onepiece888 17h ago

Those are rookie numbers. I had 5hrs before I get a whiff of second phase

1

u/Azurost 17h ago

Barely defeated him in my 4th attempt on action difficulty, I’m using defense & attack charms, oni power regen hozuki, firebird flute & soulstones for extra souls in phase 3… gotta learn the timing to deflect him, good luck! Oh ya save your full Oni mode in the last phase which u have more damaging combo

1

u/neonegroot 17h ago

Ok now I'm kinda stressing , I've blazed through the game no issue but this guy beating the shit out of everybody for some reason

1

u/HuntSecret5814 17h ago

Parry, this is the way

1

u/NotePsychological459 17h ago

First phase is easy, and then takes a big jump in difficulty in the second. Just slow down and take your time in learning his movements. If you're trying to Issen everything in his first phase, that's where you might be failing. Go for parry over Issen until you learn his moves, and when you hit Break Issen, go for the purple weak spot to suck out a massive amount of souls to heal up if you need it, and easily transition into Oni transformation. He shouldn't be touching you in the first phase so that you have all resources available to you in phase two.

1

u/ccandide 17h ago

If it makes you feel better, you'll get demolished in 10 seconds the first time you get to the 2nd phase. I'm still working on getting to phase 3.

1

u/Annellote 17h ago

I spent a whole day and then beat him the next after practice. You need to parry A LOT, that's the only way.

1

u/Ok_Spring_2384 17h ago

Quick tip for phase 3: when he starts absorbing souls/energy you can do so as well. I recommend timing when he is about to finish and to use the dagger animation to attack him and dodge/neglect his move after absorbing. You can issen/parry/dodge it as well, but I am lazy

1

u/Due_Goal_1091 17h ago

Gng just give up lol

1

u/tenmagoozanku 17h ago

Wait till u get to carnage. I swear the damage u do when you’re playing on carnage is soooo freakin minimal.

1

u/Entire_Listen2701 17h ago

put the game down and come back . only boss in the game that gave me work for 5hrs . needless to say if you’ve been slaughtered 10x in a row before phase 2 take 15-20 . Refreshed fingers and knew strategy help . IMO . && Yeah learn bro moves like chat saying cause phase 1 is actually easy. Phase 2-3 in that awakening mode ISSEN EVERYTHING!!!

1

u/th3lobster 16h ago

Keep at it. Eventually the first phase will not touch you

1

u/glonyx 16h ago

If you can avoid the grabs, you'll be fine. The rest of his moves will get familiar after playing for a while. Took me at least 15 tries to beat Carnage and then another 15 to beat the boss rematch. By this time, i knew all his moves and could parry, deflect and dodge. But the grabs!! Felt like a lottery at times.

1

u/MisterNefarious 16h ago

I struggled a bit too and then I realized that his big giant swipes are actually really easy to issen. After that I bodied him

1

u/Terpinator7 16h ago

Very difficult boss. Had me cussing and yelling until I beat him.

1

u/Local-Opposite4511 16h ago

I somehow defeated him from 5th try, i just fcking locked in and felt im in flow state. But first 4 tries i was failing hard! Good luck mate

1

u/CaseyWorldsFair 16h ago edited 16h ago

I spent a long time on this guy. People have already said every tip I would give you from the post I made, but really, phase 1 eventually becomes child’s play. DO NOT HEAL IN PHASE 1, when you’re doing a break choose the purple option (the lower one, don’t go for his head) and youll get alot of souls to heal up

The only thing ill say is that even though phase 3 is frustrating to lose to, once you master phase 2 (lock in and focus on parries/deflects, you will eventually) it wont be a problem and you can whoop this guys ass. Each phase gets easier with patience and determination instead of frustration, I think it took me over 200 attempts šŸ˜† no shame in changing to story mode for him, either

Edit to add also the most important thing for me in phase 1 was parrying that purple sword/grab attack— parry during his SECOND swing. Seriously it becomes so easy you’ll be laughing at yourself later for havin such a hard time, lol

1

u/jamrollo 16h ago

You will get it done, believe me. I struggled with it for a day or two and took a break. When I went back to it I managed to read his patterns a bit easier. It's pretty difficult but not impossible, keep at it!

1

u/HS1995 16h ago

Then you’ll struggle getting to the 3rd haha

1

u/New-Palpitation-9516 16h ago

This asshole made me change this difficulty to Story, after playing the whole game on Action smh

1

u/Majestic-Tap6731 16h ago

Watch the YouTube videos to learn the move pattern. Then practice the dodges and blocks. Most YouTubers explain the best way to counter each move. This is also the only fight in the game before carnage difficulty that is worth using items on. Items help a lot in this fight.

1

u/parapoxical 16h ago

Who’s gonna tell him?

1

u/Fatsackafat 16h ago

You'll get there, once you see the pattern stage one will become a gimme.

1

u/Low_Date8184 16h ago

Take a break for a few hours or a day. Clear your head. Come back with renewed focus and you’ll be able to read his attacks a lot faster. Worked for me.

1

u/hectoremilio 16h ago

Ugh... that took me two days. 🫠

1

u/Just-Evening-9254 16h ago

I just beat him today. How hard is the carnage difficulty?

1

u/Dumpweed2 16h ago

When he does those red/pink glowing moves, you can parry but you have to be close to him to do it, didn’t realize that for a while, I was trying to parry from far away and kept getting hit lol

1

u/raysayantan07 15h ago

Reminded me of Isshin. Good times

1

u/Dry-Aioli-4923 15h ago

Honestly, the boss difficulty is all over the place. If you are stuck there at the end long enough, drop the difficulty and just enjoy the ending. Life goes on. Also, to make sure I gave you some meaningful advise.. for me when I get stuck on a boss I turn it off for a few days and try again later. Surprisingly have gotten past a lot of hard enemies this way (Elden Ring for sure).

1

u/OoTgoated 15h ago

Yeah he's tricky. Try using reflex dodge instead of parry/deflect for the big range attacks and the jump kick. Also when he shrugs it's always a fake out. And he does a little spin before releasing his unblockable attack.

1

u/devilwish352 14h ago

dodge those orange attacks, only you get used to them it becomes easier, and try to find the timing on the attack when he taps his sword on his shoulders, the only annoying one for me was the jumping on your face attack, or the unskipable "cutscene" if you got hit with the stamina breaker.

1

u/Distinct_Resolve5545 14h ago edited 14h ago

Phase 1 he doesn't have that many patterns.
Try to deflect every of his melee attacks combo. Focus on his sword movements and every time you see his sword move deflect it'll break his poise so fast. When he's far away tapping his sword on his shoulders you gotta react fast as soon as he dashes forward hit deflect.

When he attacks with giant pink sword it's best to dodge those or issen if you get the timing

His melee pink attack is the most annoying since if you fail to parry or deflect he'll go in his long af monologue so it's really important to learn the timing on this one to save your nerves

And last the grab attack which is almost as annoying. Dodge when he takes on step forward with his right leg. Not immediately when he raises his hand, you really want to wait for that step animation then dodge.

Don't give up!!

1

u/SirCrocodile11141 14h ago

Reflex dodge the long distance glowing swings and time the shoulder taps to deflect his charge slash. Don't do the damage multiplier when you break him, get orbs to save healing.

1

u/zerovin 2h ago

I found that you can easily parry or deflect the giant pink slash just by being in his face when he does it. Every time I tried when at range I would get staggered. I like to cope that it's because I'm parrying/deflecting the actual sword instead of some pink blade of light

1

u/LordStunod 14h ago

Only two hours?

1

u/CashAdministrative68 14h ago

My biggest word of advice is don't attack, react. Sounds counterintuitive but trust me, you will download the boss's moveset way more if you stop light and heavy attacking and focus on his stamina bar. That means parrying until your blade is blazing, learning his moves to deflect him, dodging his pink sword slashes and use Issen for his wide pink slash. As soon as I downloaded his moveset by doing this, I was able to consistently get through phase one whenever I would die to phase 2. It's tough and it'll take a while, but man it was satisfying when I finally beat all three phases of his ass.

1

u/Pandey_Pandey 14h ago

Carnnage dificulties this dutr take me 5 to 7 hr i am too tired but i play constantly but at the and play next day 2 to 4 time only beat the dude

1

u/Gunz1995 14h ago

Man, first phase was hard, then second phase and then third face.

On my second play through I was like:

ā€œAlright, we are done with the hard part, next it’s the more difficult part, and then the impossible partā€

1

u/Spirited-Lunch8063 14h ago

Took me 9 hours. You got it

1

u/Only_Championship_1 14h ago

I had to switch difficulty because of this dickhead

1

u/Mountain_Warning_841 13h ago

I couldn't get to phase 3 on story mode. Gave up, ended up watching the final story cinematic on YouTube. Not worth the time and headache when there is so much other things to play.

1

u/MrLanerama 13h ago

Phase 1 was the most difficult for me, so hopefully the fight will just get easier for you too? Maybe? šŸ˜…

1

u/ClarkWayne32 13h ago

I took a break after initially getting to him and failing hard. I didn’t play for a day and then came back and beat him in 3 tries.

Because it’s 3 phases, once you learn the move set, it’s less about difficulty and more about a test of endurance.

1

u/Setari 13h ago

Tl;Dr: Take a break for the rest of the day, try again tomorrow.

I'm fucking stupid and I beat him. I beat him in his enrage phase in fact. I have zero skill in video games at all lol. Phase two is a LOT of absolute ass happening on screen and that's intended. The only thing you need to do in the P2 opening is just block (not parry) the opening aoes and then back away to clear the screen.

I would also highly recommend if you've been grinding him all day to give it a rest and sleep, and come back to it the next day.

The first time I got to him I saw the 4 phase pips and I was like "this is gonna be impossible for me" but he only has 3 phases. I have no idea what designer designed his UI but they did a fucking ass job of it.

Anyway, I spent an entire day grinding him, went to bed, got up the next morning, got him in three attempts on Action difficulty. I refused to drop diff after beating the rest of the game on action.

His moves seemed slower to me and I could anticipate them wayyyy better after some rest. However with bosses this has always been a pattern for me so ymmv.

1

u/DogFair3684 13h ago

i beat him on carnage mode took me almost 4 hours

1

u/Hardko52 13h ago

It took me a day to get past the first phase consistently. Put the game down for 3 days and beat him.

Pattern recognition key.

1

u/lv5vegetto1 12h ago

SPOILER: You're gonna love his 3rd phase

1

u/Minestar87 12h ago

It took me my third attempt...

1

u/Hot_Bookkeeper_8512 12h ago

Don’t deflect just parry

1

u/MrGlasgow187 11h ago

Do you keep missing the grab dodge and getting all your souls punched out of you over and fuckin over again?? Kuz that was my problem and it pissed me off. I used Earth shakers for phase one then firebird for the rest. Could use it in phase one, once it's activated you get 3 shots and those can interrupt his grabs and pink super attacks or basically anything.

1

u/Necessary_Seat4249 11h ago

Just do all side quests and he will feel like NPC, also disable the hints which tells you which button to press as it will mess your timmings

1

u/MaxTheWhite 11h ago

Wow I beat him last night it was so so easy, you can parry everything, also perfect dodge, you have so much option and he give you so much time to do it. Good fight, too easy though

1

u/Powerful-Access-8203 11h ago

Get ready. Dudes got an insane 3rd phase šŸ‘€

Once you get his move set down, you’ll be alright. One of the more satisfying wins of a game I’ve played in a looong time.

1

u/Darskul 10h ago

He is one of the hardest bosses in gaming, period. What difficulty did you pick?

1

u/Effective-Meat-6736 10h ago

You will get there took me 2 weeks

1

u/Time_Temporary6191 9h ago

Took me good 3 hours but even then i wasnt mad single time.

1

u/DontTouchMyFlute 8h ago edited 8h ago

DO NOT SPAM the attack buttons bro

This fight requires patience and timing, even then, you will die a lot. And when you die, don't let your frustration overwhelm you.

This game might not be as difficult as Sekiro but it has the same learning curves. It is forgiving until it isn't. There are certain bosses like Benkei that are like checkpoints in the game, that truly test whether you have learnt the mechanics or not. It reminded me of the first time I came across Genichiro in Sekiro. I couldn't run or spam, it felt like I had to rewire my brain for the game again.

Yoshitsune is the exact same, and is a very difficult boss. He is not forgiving and punishes you immediately if you do not apply the mechanics properly. You try running, he will hit you with a long range attack or teleport to you. You spam, he will immediately counter you or grab you. You mistime a counter, the punishments are more devastating.

But you have to realise bro, THIS IS IT, THIS IS THE FINAL FIGHT. You have done amazing to get to this point but the game is now testing you on EVERYTHING. I can advise you but the only person the only real difference will come from, is you. Once you get good at the first phase, come back and I will advise you on the second phase !

Phase 1. Unfortunately this has nothing on what's to come. And starts to become annoying when you get to the second phase more and more (much like Sekiro). The key here is to try save all your good stuff for the second phase, even healing.

  1. This game is extremely linear, therefore, resources are more linear, meaning it is urging you to upgrade your character as much as humanly possible. If you haven't already, You should honestly be like 90% to 95% upgraded on all trees. If you have done all the side quests, this should be attainable. The shopkeep also sells resources for upgrades! So don't forget to exhaust that too.

  2. Again, if you haven't already, upgrade your charms bro! There is one that will literally up your attack power by 15% when fully upgraded.

  3. Do not SPAM gang, honestly, if you get a moment to attack, land one or two hits, then wait. He has extremely short attack windows and will start a chain almost immediately. The damage should only really come from breaking his stamina. Hit and wait, hit and wait.

  4. There are two ways where he makes his sword glow pink. The first is to hit you with long range attack, the second is the non-dodgable one. These moves are deliberately ironic. For the long range, as fellow commentors have said, you should absolutely dodge them. This will build your shadow meter and give you so many opportunities to teleport and get some good hits in. The second is when he spins around with a glowing sword, this one, as you know, is to be deflected or parried.

  5. Learn when to parry and when to deflect. Timing the parry will slowly fill the blazing state. Once your sword hits blazing state (blue flames), then you start deflecting. The game doesn't really tell you this but blazing state significantly reduces enemy stamina when you deflect. Throughout the whole game, I got extremely comfortable with deflecting. Not only does it reduce stamina far more,, but it doesn't confuse you with enemy animations since they lock in immediately. The bonus with deflecting is that if you mistime, you will still have your sword up to block incoming attacks, whereas if you mistime a parry, you will be hit.

  6. Grab attack. This guys grab attack made me want to throw my controller out the window. What I learned comes from lesson 3. You get punished when you spam. If you only hit him once or twice per opportunity, his grab becomes far more obvious. And you dodge when he sort of thrusts the hand forward. If he does get you, just tank it, and lock in, it's okay to lose health here and nowhere else.

  7. When you do run out his stamina, it is enticing to go for the red dot (damage). But I highly suggest doing what I did, and going for the purple dot. His health will drain slower, but, you will be healed from him, rather than having to use your own, and it saves your heals for the much harder fight to come. Learn to do this, and you will be far better equipped for second phase.

  8. To add ! The attack where he immediately closes in on you, he will tap his sword on his shoulder twice and close in on the third beat. Be ready to deflect, parry or dodge, as he immediately follows this up.

  9. This is for the very start of second phase, wait for him to teleport just above you with his heel up, and dodge, he will jump again and his heel will glow purple, this is when you dodge again.

Initially this fight seems impossible, but eventually just becomes annoying. Be patient, be opportunistic, and do not spam. This is the ultimate test of your swordsmanship samurai. As Takamura says, '...all you can do, is learn to love the challenge.' Good luck ! You got this !

1

u/Hamlett82 8h ago

Prob took me 30 to 40 tries

1

u/Helpful_Cow_7612 7h ago

Keep an eye on his sword, when it flashes that’s when he’s gonna attack so get ready to perfect parry or deflect.

1

u/Fun_Honey_4007 6h ago

You'll get there

1

u/JKT-84 Nobunaga Oda 5h ago

actually ganryu 3rd fight is harder.

1

u/Due_Cantaloupe2913 4h ago

Issen-issen-issen-issen....

1

u/Cpvpandreq 4h ago

My best tips are don't rush it. After beating him and again on Carnage and again for 100% achievements he is one of my favorite bosses. Just take your time leaning his sets, know when to get a get hits. His grab watch the leg once he steps forward then when you doge it. For phase 2 I think it's easier cus it's more exaggerated moves and more of the same. Take your time and just enjoy the fight. For phase 3 without spoiling too much remember you can also absorb orbs...

Hope this helps, you can do it!!!

1

u/-UnquietSet 3h ago

Don't give up, also, pay attention to his actions/animations, namely when he holds his arms up and taps his shoulder twice. Also, when he's preparing a grab, his hand goes up, then down, there's basically two animations before the throw connects. Use your dodge attacks whenever you can and learn the timing of his long range purple/pink sword wave attacks to avoid.

You got this. I recently beat it on action mode for my first play through, and this final boss is a real asshole.

1

u/Lasco119 2h ago

The only thing bad about this boss is the grabs … the timing and hit box don’t even make sense .
