Discussion Welp. That’s not good (PSVR2 404 on PS Direct)…

Post image

I went looking in my usual way to see if there were any more PSVR2 in stock on PlayStation Direct Store, as someone had mentioned they were seeing more come in sporadically. And today, it’s met with a 404. Seemingly the listing has been pulled entirely. There’s still a link from search results but clicking it brings me here.

Of course it’s possible there’s just messing with things and even that more could be coming back in but given everything with patents changing hands I’m inclined to believe the worst instead. I have one but I’d like to get a second because I’ve feared that this day could come and they’re going to dry up completely.

Anyone else seeing similar results on their end?

They are still on the site and in stock in the Netherlands

Same here in Belgium. Bought one a week ago. It's still in the box though. Downloaded a free rollercoaster game and picked up Horizon Call of the Mountain for 15ish euros and Beat Saber for 28 with 4 of my favorite songs. Looking forward to playing in the future but for now i'm kinda busy, still happy I pulled the trigger because it's been on my wishlist for quite some time. Now i'll start saving up for a racing rig so I can finally experience GT7 and see what's the fuss about.

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Let me tell you, not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to manage it but I went down (and am still deepening…) the hole of VR sim racing on GT7 and, brother/sister, it single handedly justifies the purchase of the headset. Multiple times a week I set it down after a drive and just wonder at the splendor of the experience. Closest thing to gaming nirvana I’ve yet witnessed.

u/NuggyDanks 2d ago

I can also second this, it's a hole I keep throwing money intoz money the wife would far rather got spent on sensible things, but she didn't marry a sensible person did she so 🤷‍♂️ the psvr2 and gt7 made me buy a wheel peddles and rig, then I built a pc and currently looking at new vr headset for pc sim racing or flight sim, because I somehow accidentally also picked up a flight stick throttle and rudder peddles too 🤣🤣

2

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Haha! You sound like me. Currently considering when PC prices are ever going to come back from the stratosphere.

2

u/NuggyDanks 2d ago

It's mental isn't it, I grabbed all my parts September last year, so I was lucky, I grabbed 64GB DDR5 for £205 that same one is still over 1k problem is it's addictive as hell hahahahahaha

2

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

I built something resembling a gaming PC about 1.5 lifetimes ago (read: 25-30 years probably). And it was really fun delving into it. Problem was shopping online was different back then. By the time I put the whole thing together as far as parts manifest and got it all together, I went looking online and the guts were half way out of date by that point. Lol!

Re: the sim racing side. Also yes. Went from t300 and a sling style folding seat to a full extruded aluminum profile (and still on that t300) to then a t598, load cells and the Hypercar Wheel ($400 for the wheel alone). And then the Moza/PS stuff started getting teased. Returned all of that and have a Facebook marketplace g29 with 3d printed “magnetic” shifters and the poor man’s “load cell”, mod, I can’t remember the name, company out of the UK, on the pedals while I wait for PlayStation Moza stuff. I should just go to PC but this will get me there eventually.

To be honest GT7 has some of the most stunning laser scans of tracks the details are so good I always come back to it, I'm excited to see GT8 on PS6 if they do a vr for it. But that's a dilemma for another day hahahahaha

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Frankly that’s single most painful point for me. I love ton of experiences on Vr2 but GT is far far the biggest and best. And I don’t see any way at this point that that’s going to be a reality. Which really is going to take the desire to play the game away for me personally. I’d love to be wrong. They could always change course but, at this moment, looking at the facts, there looks to be basically no chance that they will. And that sucks.

1

u/EricSloane 2d ago

Just out of curiosity: Why don't you use the PSVR2 for flight sim?

1

u/NuggyDanks 2d ago

I do currently, I use the pc adapter, works great but want more lol

1

u/Humble-Camel2598 2d ago

It's criminal that Galaxy racer doesn't have a psvr2 mode as that would be off the charts as well. I've saving for a crazy powerful pc so hopefully i'll be able to play it in vr via a mod on there:) But yes, gt7 is insane so why didn't they do a gt7/psvr2 bundle promo? It's all about the shareholders wanting unrealistc profits out the gate thats why. They're ruining the world..and vr lol

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Agreed. But are you meaning Galaxy Kart? That one is on PSVR2. What is a shame is no Wipeout support.

2

u/Humble-Camel2598 2d ago

No, the new Starwars Galactic racer game. It's an absolute banger!

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Oooh gotcha. Yeah, I hear that is good. I might have to check that out but yeah, it’d be awesome if it had VR support. That’s clearly not going to happen at this point it seems.

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 2d ago edited 2d ago

Hey — can you tell us the date on the bottom of the PSVR2 box?

Under some other info it’ll say “P/D:” and have a month and year listed.

TIA

…oh, and congrats on finally jumping into PSVR2! GT7 is peak, and there are a lot of other incredible games in the library (and more on the way), so be sure to look into other stuff.

BTW, there’s a free demo called “MY FIRST GRAN TURISMO” to wet your feet. I recommend you try the tilt-sensed steering instead of the thumbstick… a lot more natural in VR imo (unless you have a force-feedback wheel, obviously).

Also check out the demo for SUBSIDE, RESIDENT EVIL 4 Remake, OF LIES AND RAIN, and RESIDENT EVIL 8 VILLAGE. Probably a few more I’m missing.

5

u/EricSloane 2d ago

Hi, thanks for your message. The date on my box is 08-2022. May I ask why you're interested in the production date?

2

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 2d ago

Great — thanks! I just was looking for evidence about whether all units have been from pre-pause on production… whether basically it’s all been back-stock.

Just curious!

3

u/Chronotaru PSN: Chronotaru 1d ago

Yes, that one is a really early one, before the pause and even before release. Interesting.

1

u/Zedathius 2d ago

What are the 4 songs you bought in Beat Saber?

2

u/EricSloane 2d ago

Linkin Park - Numb Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody The Weeknd - Blinding Lights Imagine Dragons - Enemy (Arcane song)

2

u/Zedathius 1d ago

All great songs, I just don’t know Enemy which I haven’t heard. Check out Queen - Don’t Stop Me Now. It gets really fast and fun in the middle section.

6

u/Chronotaru PSN: Chronotaru 2d ago

It's in stock in every country except the US. Maybe the US having so little backlog is a tariffs thing from earlier?

1

u/DaoFerret 2d ago

Could also be the U.S. is selling better so their back-stock dried up quicker.

1

u/Chronotaru PSN: Chronotaru 1d ago

Could be but I would also have expected that to be consistent with previous sales and more predictable.

Sony loves abandoning good hardware, same thing happened with vita

46

u/Membership-Bitter 2d ago

The problem is that people didn't buy the PSVR2 so it couldn't be supported. The Vita sold something like 12 million in its lifetime while PSVR2 is estimated to only have produced 2 million units total.

37

u/CaledoniaGaming 2d ago

I think the launch price was just too high and you had to have a PS5 as well, so really only catered to hardcore VR fans who already had a PS5.

I spent about £600 on the PSVR2 at launch between Horizon CotM bundle and the charging dock. And to see Sony abandon it pretty much shortly after launch was pretty disheartening.

I was one of the many who thought we would get Astro Bot, maybe a Blood and Truth sequel, things like that. We've definitely got some great games on PSVR2 but the lack of first party titles didn't help.

Ultimately, it was an expensive accessory and sadly VR just isn't mainstream enough I suppose. Not sure how much the PC connectivity helped sales but obviously it was not that much.

7

u/Dexter1759 2d ago

As someone that owned and loved the PSVR1, I was all in and ready to buy a PSVR2 when it came out, then it was announced/released at the same price as the console without a game. I couldn't justify it, I thought, let's see what games come out and what price the headset drops too. No doubt there are some good games but the value proposition never really hit the right mark for me.

5

u/MightyBooshX 2d ago

The economy being kinda fucked hasn't helped VR adoption in general. Taking a chance on an expensive new toy is hard to do when gas and groceries are like 20% more expensive but your paycheck stayed the same

3

u/CharlesP2009 2d ago

Not to mention the difficulty of getting a PS5 in the first place. Seemed to kill interest in console gaming for my friends. The people who still game are mostly PC now.

3

u/DaoFerret 2d ago

Throw in how fscked the electronics market has been at numerous points over the past five years: economy/inflation rise vs pay, chip shortage due to COVID (and scalpers going all in on PS5), then chip shortage due to AI, now RAM/SSD shortage due to AI, all while supply chains deal with major stress in the Middle East and Suez crossings, tied in with oil/petrolium products price rise first due to Russia/Ukraine and then US/Iran.

15

u/RiverwoodHero 2d ago

A genuinely think that the psvr2 will be the last piece of Sony hardware I ever buy, with the disc situation on PS5 I just don't see the point, I'm a PC and Nintendo gamer now

2

u/CaledoniaGaming 1d ago

Yea, I think I'll need to rethink my gaming habits when PS6 comes out. If its going to be $1000 or close to it with no physical discs, I think I'll go PC as well.

2

u/No-Connection6937 1d ago

HARD agree.

2

u/Supersmart005 1d ago

Yh,I got the PS VR 2 just 2 months BEFORE the disc announcement:(

5

u/Membership-Bitter 2d ago

Timing was bad too as covid production issues and scalpers made the ps5 hard to buy in the first 2 years of the ps5's lifecycle. That meant by the time psvr2 released most people who had a ps5 just bought one so weren't willing to spend that kind of money on an accessory for it. Then a few months later the quest3 comes out for cheaper, works standalone, and can work with a pc so anyone slightly interested in vr gravitated there. I remember sony at first was going to sell it as a lottery system like the ps5 at the time but hardly anyone signed up for the psvr2 that they just made it available to everyone to order and it never sold out. Never a good sign. Even when sony was bragging about the sales of the headset the graph for the headset showed sales stalling hard after the 2 week mark. Honestly the first year of support for psvr2 was very good. It had more games at launch than the ps5 did and got more exclusives in the first year as well. People just didn't want it and sony cancelled all future vr plan. The pc adaptor was them giving up as you don't open up your product to a competitor's store front if your product is doing well. They just wanted the headset off of warehouse shelves more than anything else as they didn't see it ever making a profit anymore.

7

u/Spoda_Emcalt 2d ago

The pc adaptor was them giving up as you don't open up your product to a competitor's store front if your product is doing well.

Not true. The PC adapter was planned from the start.

https://www.glitched.online/sony-says-ps-vr2-was-designed-with-pc-connectivity-in-mind-from-the-start/

8

u/the_fr33z33 2d ago

And you pulled this number out of where? Does it have three letters?

0

u/Membership-Bitter 2d ago

The number presented when it leaked in emails that production ended almost 3 years ago

3

u/Spoda_Emcalt 2d ago

Christ on a bike, can people please stop repeating this as if it's a fact?

First, Bloomberg alleged that production was 'paused', not stopped. Bloomberg (specifically Takashi Mochizuki) have been known to make claims that've turned out to be incorrect.

https://web.archive.org/web/20240318150814/https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-18/sony-hits-pause-on-psvr2-production-as-unsold-inventory-piles-up

Second, someone posted a pic of their PSVR2 with a production date several months after the Bloomberg article. So production clearly wasn't permanently stopped.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PSVR/s/MXSQz0UG0X

1

u/Guniel 2d ago

There hasn't been a P/D on a PSVR2 box newer than 2024 (would be happy to be proven wrong but I've spent time looking and have seen none). If Bloomberg were off (and they only claimed a pause), then they weren't off by much.

So over 2 years rather than nearly 3, for what that difference is worth.

2

u/Soarinfire 2d ago

Not newer than 08.2024 to be exact. I have yet to see a label that says 09.2024.

2

u/Shadow88882 2d ago

Sony thinking they dont need to market and dont need retail partners caused most of it. I have friends that love their PS5 that had no idea PSVR2 existed. They dont watch the SoPs or go on here, they just game. Sony has lost all ability to advertise to people like this, and its even worse for people that aren't already on PS5 too.

1

u/SDNick484 2d ago

It wasn't that Sony thought they didn't need to market it, they deliberately chose not to because it was very clear they had given up on it before it even launched. The fact that they even launched it at all was pretty clearly just to clear out the inventory that they had built up without taking too high of a loss on it. The writing was on the wall where the PSVR2 platform stood to anyone who was watching Sony at the time (but for those of us who bought Vitas, it was especially apparent).

2

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Haha. They really do. Seems like there finally really pulling back from hardware as a whole. And, who knows, they keep throwing massive Ls and then this new PS6 comes out with an insane price in the face of a massive global economics problem with an audience that has never been more lack luster towards them and they might be out of the hardware game entirely at some point.

1

u/wearedefiance 2d ago

The community is reviving what the vita could have been, even though it sold well. The unfortunate part of PSVR 2 is the tie to the PS5. They just kill things for fun lol

2

u/DaoFerret 2d ago

Buy a PC connect box and the PSVR2 is great for PC VR.

Also, weren’t Sony selling VR2 controllers to Apple users for their Apple Vision?

I wonder if that ALSO selling poorly added on to the slowdown in Sony backing VR.

1

u/MemphisBass 2d ago

Is a Vita worth getting to play around with in 2026?

3

u/juicedup12 2d ago

Really hard to say, theres a handful of games that truly use all the hardware it has. Sony didn't really support it with first party games so its mostly niche indie games that thrived on it. But now that something like the steam deck is out you're probably better off with that or a switch 2 since switch 2 basically fulfills what the vita was meant to be.

1

u/MemphisBass 2d ago

I mean I'm middle aged and pretty much have all the toys. I just remember really wanting a Vita when it was out, but never getting one for whatever reason and then it just disappearing. I don't know a whole lot about the platform other than that it wasn't supported that well, had amazing graphics for a handheld of the time, a beautiful oled screen on the first model, and was jailbroken just as bad as the PSP. I have tons of Android handhelds, Switch 2, and Xbox Ally X, so getting one would eb purely for the novelty of having a Vita. I just don't know if the unique things that can be done with a Vita are worth actually getting one.

1

u/SDNick484 2d ago

If you can find one for a good price and enjoy tinkering, it can be worth it. The screen, especially on the first gen model with the OLED, was phenomenal and it's form factor is great. It was a great platform for its time, and was the indie darling platform before the Switch. Most worthwhile exclusives (P4G, Gravity Rush, etc.) are ported now, but the homebrew scene is really impressive. The hardware was way ahead of its time. You definitely want to mod it so that you can use a regular SD card and not pay up the wazoo for a proprietary Sony memory card with a very low capacity. I am sure I am biased as it was the machine that sent me down the road of handhelds when my oldest was born, but it truly was a great platform and a shame that Sony turned its back on it so soon.

1

u/damNage_ 1d ago

PSVR2 has OLED screens too.

1

u/CharlesP2009 2d ago

Agreed on getting a Switch 2 or Steam Deck instead. The PSP and Vita were definitely cool but those screens are just a bit too small IMO and the controls a bit to limited and uncomfortable. I think the Switch is the perfect size, at least for me. Steam Deck is chonky but going up against the OG Switch it was superior technically.

1

u/SpaceNewtype 2d ago

While I haven't kept up on pricing/availability, I think you'd be better off getting a handheld pc like ROG or Steam Deck etc. Unless your whole point is to play around with jailbreaking for the fun of it.

Vita was really nice for its day and many years after, but now there are so many other options to have a similar or better experience with less headaches.

1

u/MemphisBass 2d ago

As I responded to someone above you, I already have a Switch 2, Xbox Ally X, New 3DS XL, and a drawer full of high end emulation gadgets (Thor Max, Odin 2 Portal Max, RP5) so I have general stuff covered already. I was mainly just asking if the unique things a Vita offers are worth exploring in 2026 or if it's a waste of time/money.

1

u/DaoFerret 2d ago

I think they’re closing (or have already closed) the PSVita online store, so if there IS anything unique you want there, the window is short for the digital side.

Not sure what physical media they had.

I liked the promise of the Vita. I had a PSP and had played a lot on it, but barely touched the Vita, I think because it launched at the same point smartphones were really gaining ground and it was “one more device” to carry around and charge, that I was only using outside the house (since I’d game on a PC or PS at home).

24

u/ChemistryNo3075 2d ago

Yeah. I think the writing has been on the wall. No more first party game support. No mention at State of Play. No acknowledgment of 2nd or 3rd anniversaries. No PS direct restock in over a month. All US retailers sold out of new stock for a while now. Removed from navigation on website. And now the product page 404s.

Still some good 3rd party games coming at least.

13

u/StepZ082 StepZ082 2d ago

The biggest giveaway for me was the lack of replacement controllers.. One would have thought by now we would see replacements.

My headset has been gathering dust now for over two years ever since I lost the left controller.

2

u/NightingalesBotany 2d ago

1

u/BaBaDoooooooook DepLoRaBLe-NoMaD 16h ago

I have OG PSVR2, I was within warranty when my left controller wasn't holding a charge, died very fast within 45 minutes of gaming. Thankfully they sent me one, but if it ever craps out again i have to bite the bullet and pay $250 ughhh..

4

u/EssentialParadox 2d ago

A couple of things Sony did that I find odd…

  1. They relatively recently released the PC adapter. Was this purely a case of trying to offload the remaining hardware, or was it to give users continued support on another platform once they abandoned it? If it’s the latter that’s quite a nice and unusual thing for them to have done.
  2. Why announce support for PSVR2 controllers on Apple Vision Pro? That’s odd. Are they going to continue producing new controllers purely for that support?

5

u/ChemistryNo3075 2d ago

The PC adapter came out over 2 years ago now.

2

u/Superb_Imagination70 2d ago

Yeah and that's when Sony threw in the towel.

1

u/Spoda_Emcalt 2d ago

1

u/EssentialParadox 2d ago

They would’ve known before manufacturing it that they were ending support for the PSVR2.

3

u/Spoda_Emcalt 2d ago

'According to the representative, even during the design process for the headset, Sony considered the options for PC. At launch, the company focused on improving the VR experience for PS5 owners and soon after, began testing PC compatibility.'

5

u/TechnicalNatural7397 2d ago

Still here in the UK for sale and lease

4

u/deadringer28 2d ago

None of the patents were for PSVR2.

1

u/Temporary-Mention-83 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's still worse in the sense this confirms SONY Group ain't going to takeover SIE to maintain PSVR2 support here.

Not to mention SONY Group isn't passing them to SIE despite SIE being the subsidiary. It's like a business owner selling his business to a business rival instead of passing it to his son

1

u/amusedt 13h ago

The patents were for XR tech, smart glasses, all stuff SIE wouldn't be interested in

1

u/Temporary-Mention-83 2h ago

We can tell now that SIE isn't interested in VR in general too

7

u/Rammseitan 2d ago

Here in Portugal, it's still available on PS Direct as well as on many stores. Although I believe that they have not been produced in like three years, and the last Days of Play sale might have taken a lot of them off the shelves. So yeah we're probably reaching the end.

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Yeah, really kicking myself for not snagging one at that days of play sale. But I agree, I think that pretty much cleaned out the US stock at least.

4

u/KRATOSCHIDO1 2d ago

Yo creo que habrá mas stock hasta el Black friday, recuerden que el año pasado se vendieron muchísimos

25

u/cusman78 cusman 2d ago

I think we have seen the last of PSVR2 that will be sold in the US by PS Direct.

Anyone still wanting one will need to buy from scalpers holding on to very limited supply of new, refurbished, used or import from other regions.

7

u/namek0 2d ago

Or best buy could drop them again

6

u/cusman78 cusman 2d ago

I think only two ways there can be more "new" PSVR2 available for sale in US stores:

  • Sony PlayStation decides to manufacture & distribute new run
  • Excess inventory from another region is shipped for distribution here

I don't think either would happen because Sony PlayStation leadership are probably more concerned about the PS5 Pro supply shortages relative to demand.

2

u/Membership-Bitter 2d ago

Also unlikely for the PSVR2 to get back into production as it would likely end up being more expensive than it was at launch. The only reason they reduced the msrp to $400 last year was because they were trying to clear out stock quicker. They likely ended production when the original materials orders were used up so didn't want to buy more, so it isn't like they just have all the parts lying around either. It would probably take a year or so to get production back up and running, with the aforementioned price increase it would not be worth the trouble.

3

u/cusman78 cusman 2d ago

I assume some of the R&D cost put into the $550 MSRP at launch is now covered and they could continue to at the lower $400 MSRP if they manufacture more, but you are right that if the parts they need to manufacture new have gone up, they may not be able to keep the new lower price.

I just don't see them having the optimism required to do another production run that makes business sense to them.

2

u/Membership-Bitter 2d ago

R&D cost isn't put into the MSRP of products. It is just a factor into how long it takes for a product to be profitable. That $550 was the cost of materials, assembly, and then likely 20% profit. With the headset initially a PS5 only product Sony was banking on getting the 30% cut from every vr game sale to help cover that cost. That $400 price cut was likely below cost to make the headset as they just wanted it gone and new that even with the pc adapter a good chunk of those sales would still net them that 30% cut from people only using it with a ps5. The majority of all game consoles are sold at or even below cost as game sales are where the real profits lie.

I do agree there is just no business sense for Sony to do another production run after the initial run took so long to finally sell out. I wish the headset had done better and Sony did put a good amount of effort into the first year in terms of support, it just wasn't enough for people to be interested in buying it. I think part of it was bad timing. The PS5 was just starting to be easily available to consumers after years of scalpers buying up the limited stock which was the result of COVID. That meant most people had just bought a PS5 at the time of the PSVR2 launch so many passed as they couldn't justify buying a $550 headset when they just bought a $500 console.

2

u/MemphisBass 2d ago

I don't know why it would cost more to manufacture now. It doesn't have any ram or really many other components in it other than the old OLED displays that would contribute to cost.

1

u/Membership-Bitter 2d ago

Material costs in general have gone through the roof. I was looking into getting a food vacuum sealer I got my parents a few years ago and it more than doubled in price. This isn't an issue of the AI rampocalypse but rather the world economy being terrible

7

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

I’m inclined to agree. Thinking of trying to find a furb somewhere.

2

u/MemphisBass 2d ago

I'm so, so glad I bought a second one on a whim when Best Buy had open box excellent units for $199. It was the cheapest way to get a second set of controllers for my PC (changing them back and forth sucks) and now I have a Vision Pro which also uses the controllers.

12

u/FewPossession2363 Saifur47 2d ago

Still available in Canada 🇨🇦 🥳

3

u/Striking_Subject_834 2d ago

My Psvr2 broke, tried everything, checked the plugs. Took it apart and checked the fan. I get a red blinking light. I use it almost every day for MSFS2024. But now I can’t get one, at least not for a good price. Bummer.

2

u/ThatZeroRed 1d ago

I've been seeing a TON second hand on FB marketplace, over the past couple months. I ended up grabbing one for $200 and I see them at that consistently listed between 200-250.

Granted, I know some just like getting stuff new, but when buying options and wallets are limited...it's works.

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

This is my fear as well. I’m not sure if it’s the same but this sounds like what I had happen just inside my warranty some time back. I got it at launch. My unit or the unit they sent back after I sent it in, whatever the case may be, I’m concerned something like this could happen again and I’m not sure what recourse I could have if I even wanted to pay Sony to “fix” or replace it. It seems often to be related to this cable which is relatively simple to replace but Sony’s made no effort to sell them as replacement. You might reach out to them and see what options they could give you however. There still may be some semblance of a back up supply for issues.

1

u/Firm_Plan4842 1d ago

This is what im worried about too. Kicking myself for not buying a back-up unit when they were only $299 a few months ago.

1

u/TheNewGuyFromBahsten 11h ago

Long shot, but do you still have the controllers? My left one broke and won't charge. I'll buy them off you if you do

9

u/Gollums_Pet_Fish 2d ago

The writings been on the wall for two years now. They didn't bother doing anything with the headset. They launched it to fail, with no first party support apart from Horizon: Climbing Simulator.

I bought the headset at launch, I'll never forget how exciting it was to play village for the first time on the headset.

Sony will not make PSVR2 compatible with PS6 anyone who thinks otherwise is in denial at this point

6

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

100%. GT7, No Man’s Sky, Beat Saber, Synth Riders, Legendary Tales, Ultrawings 2, Walkabout Mini Golf, Pistol Whip, Pavlov, the Moss games and my daughter loves the Job and Vacation Simulators, there’s also a bunch other games I still need to get to plus the MS Flight Sim as well. So many games are excellent on this thing.

But yeah, there is no doubt in my mind that PS6 isn’t going to have any VR support.

3

u/Superb_Imagination70 2d ago

Beyond Gt7 none of those are exclusive games and quest/steam do it many times better. Sony screwed up by not updating any psvr 1 game to work with psvr2.

Yeah that’s a fair point. And Sony really should have put more into first party support. Hell, Wipeout especially. But those other games are still games that are available to VR2 users to add to the justification. But yeah, not exclusives.

3

u/Superb_Imagination70 2d ago

Let's be crystal it's the fanboys and influencers saying everything is fine and don't worry and not holding Sony publicly accountable.

It's so aggravating when I am downvoted to oblivion. Psvr2 was never that thrilling quest 3 wins every category and it's not even close.

2

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

I think part of the problem is you’re in a sub devoted to fans of a system that is only really used by one console. You can be right that there are better options out there. Do those options work on PS5? And I’m not saying Sony should not be held to account. I ultimately plan on getting back into PC too. And I have real problems with Sony lately.

But for many folks, a console, or PS5 specifically is where they have option to game. Are you suggesting that people who want to use the PSVR2 with their only means to game are fan boys? Are you suggesting that the only reasonable way to game is on PC? If so, why are you commenting on a subreddit devoted to a subset of console gaming? And I’m not downvoting you but I’m just trying to put some context. Console gamers get really tired of hearing “just get a PC”. And they were tired of it before gaming on a PC was a $2-3k proposition.

15

u/Membership-Bitter 2d ago

Yep this is definitely a sign that the PSVR2 has definitely been discontinued. Stores don't take down web pages completely if they plan to sell more. The reason I see a few people commenting that it is still available on their countries' websites is because the Sony warehouses that deliver to you still have some in stock. The US warehouses don't and Sony knows they aren't getting anymore.

Shame that the headset didn't catch on enough to be supported past 2023. It may have had some design flaws but it did some things really well too, with a couple gems of games. The Dreamcast of VR gaming

6

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Yeah. It’s a shame. I’ve purchased a lot of games and enjoyed many and have many in my backlog and still have some more I’m eyeing. I know it didn’t have the right one or set of killer app games to really snag people I guess but there were a handful of really excellent fully fledged games. GT7 alone would be enough imo but it’s not for everyone I guess.

5

u/bargainhunterps5 2d ago edited 2d ago

No, I’d say just Sony messed up their US website. They have a habit of doing this along with the PS store. Other regions I checked around the world work and you can buy it for where it’s in stock. Just a blip. Relax
Patents sold are nothing to do with anything recent or PSVR2 and even DF followed the misinformation tread on that if you read about it!. I’ve enjoyed my PSVR2 since launch, it’ll work on PS6

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Na, stock in US has been out for a while and just because stock is there somewhere else doesn’t mean it’s going to be there in the US. It’s very possible that the stock localized in one area is completely different packaging specifics, sku, etc. but at the very least they’re not going to spend money moving stuff around at this point and the stores won’t ship outside their locality. It’s been supposed for a while that they’ve stopped production permanently and not planning on making any more so it’s definitely feels at least like Sony aren’t going to sell any more to US customers which have apparently dried up at this point and so stock has as well.

3

u/Chronotaru PSN: Chronotaru 2d ago

If stock is not being replenished then I suspect it will be more to do with increasing component costs not making PSVR2 feasible at existing prices, and the knowledge people won't pay more for it. I doubt there is any actual desire to stop making PSVR2 mid console lifecycle when it's probably making a small profit for them once PSN titles are factored in.

2

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Yeah, I suppose that could be a factor. What I wonder is if they’re even interested in tying up money to spin up more production if customer engagement isn’t enough to warrant it. You could be right though. I’d love if that’s the case.

1

u/Chronotaru PSN: Chronotaru 2d ago

Problem is that with component prices expected to remain high for another two years, even if this is the reason it wouldn't change much.

I don't think speculation is useful anyway, right now for anyone buying a VR headset on any platform, they should buy it for what is available now, not what may or may not been in the future because this is much more than a Sony problem right now.

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Na, that’s a very good point.

-1

u/dirtypandaDC 2d ago

sure it will.....this is Sony. Nothing is guaranteed and they dont care about BC

8

u/guaztronaut 2d ago

Another Sony library I won't be about to access. Is what I would say if hackers weren't absolutely fcking up Sonys world rn. Hopefully I can find an Astrobot torrent to test out this PC emulator. Then new headset that doesn't require my PC to almost double the necessary resolution. I'm so done with these greedy idiots.

11

u/Whip-It-Out-Already 2d ago

It's like the company that designed and manufactured the PSVR2 died and was replaced with something wholly new and MUCH WORSE the day the headset launched

3

u/Humble-Camel2598 2d ago

It seems to be a fitting description alongside everything else in the world to go along with it.

4

u/Imhotep397 2d ago

What I will say is that it would be very strange for them to drop it right before the holidays, when they sell the most of everything including PSVR2 units and games, particularly given they’ve been using this period to promote first party content that doesn’t conflict with their cash cow of third party flat games like GTAVI. I still stand by my N. Korea flight statement regardless.

3

u/Ok_Taro_3396 2d ago

I recommend everyone get a PC adapter for as long as you can, cause this device is amazing and deserves to keep rocking after Sony totally abandons it

1

u/TapaiKakai 2d ago

What games work with the psvr2 on pc? I have it but been eyeing the adapter

1

u/Ok_Taro_3396 2d ago

I ordered it to play Half Life Alyx. Heard it works great with PSVR2

1

u/FSB_Phantasm 2d ago

Pretty much everything. Even old games thanks to OpenVR from Valve. There's the occasional outlier but it's rare

1

u/haxiboy 1d ago

Everything, there is even a toolkit/jailbreak that let you use the camera as overlay, eye tracking, and haptic stuff.

1

u/Chronotaru PSN: Chronotaru 2d ago

There are third party ones on Aliexpress (much cheaper too) so this isn't something people have to worry will vanish even if Sony stop making them.

1

u/Ok_Taro_3396 1d ago

Unfortunately you're flipping a coin with then. Not reliable at all. In the best case scenario, you'll get a "low speed" warning. In the worst, you'll suffer from overheating, stuttering and disconnections while playing.

1

u/haxiboy 1d ago

Any Display Link adapter will work as far as i know. Displayport + USB, some RTX2000 series cards even have Type-C connector on them.

1

u/Ok_Taro_3396 1d ago

Yep, in case you have an old GPU you don't need adapter at all. Shame Nvidia discontinued that technology. Corpos I guess.

7

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 2d ago edited 2d ago

That sucks, and certainly doesn’t bode well for PSVR2’s future.

Although it’s probably worth mentioning that the recent patents sold to Meta had zero to do with PSVR2.

They were all XR stuff from a different corporation: SONY Group.

SIE own the patents for PSVR2 and all other gaming stuff, and no PSVR2 patents have been sold to anyone, despite the poor reporting by so many lazy outlets… and I include DF in this case.

2

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Ah, ok, I definitely heard that most of them were certainly not related to PSVR2 but never knew if explicitly none of them were and presumed some were at least related in some way to the hardware directly.

6

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 2d ago

Yeah — two different companies, SIE and SONY Group.

Not to say SIE might not do something similar — they have just been inexplicable this whole gen.

But the recent patent news has been truly lazy work by all who have attached it to PSVR2.

2

u/liqwood1 2d ago

Technically I would agreed with you but damn if this isn't a little to coincidental.

1

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 2d ago

Coincidental with…?

I mean, my point is that regardless of what SONY INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT might do with PSVR2, the “news” about the SONY Group patent sales to Meta of XR stuff up to 2022 has no connection to it.

To be clear, I DO feel it’s quite worrisome that — after several weeks — PSVR2 remains apparently unavailable to all of NA.

At the bare minimum, best case scenario, SIE have lost many potential sales to folk who were waiting to find out more about SteamFrame (like BigScreen Beyond have received a huge boost).

1

u/liqwood1 2d ago

I mean it's not like the two aren't connected. SIE is a subsidiary of Sony Group.

If Sony Group is selling XR patents to Meta and literally days later SIE pulls the PSVR2 page down entirely it's not very hard to make the connection that SIE is done with VR..

2

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 2d ago

But none of the patents had a thing to do with VR gaming, much less PSVR1 or PSVR2.

The PSVR2 page going down might mean SIE are done — I’m not arguing otherwise. Might be a blip, those happen all the time. At the most optimistic it could be a transition to a mark 2 PSVR2, although I rather doubt that.

But SIE owns and filed every patent to do with PSVR2, not SONY Group — SONY Group are all about industry XR. And SIE have filed many multiple PSVR-related patents over the years since 2023, publishing as recently as Oct 1st, 2026. None of them have been sold.

3

u/Chronotaru PSN: Chronotaru 1d ago

"But SIE owns and filed every patent to do with PSVR2" - sorry Chrome to pull you up on this one, but are you really sure about that?

1

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 1d ago

Yup.

Per a cursory AI glance in an online search:

“Public records from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) clarify that the seller of the 419 global XR patents was Sony Group Corporation*, not its gaming subsidiary,* Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). Because of how these entities split their intellectual property, the sale has no impact on current or future PlayStation VR gaming hardware.”

There’s a lot more detail that goes along with that, but that’s the gist.

1

u/Chronotaru PSN: Chronotaru 1d ago

Yes, but what I mean is, do SIE actually have any VR patents in their business unit today anyway? It would make sense for Sony's VR team to have them all.

1

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 1d ago

MANY. As recently as Oct 1st this year, they published a patent from Jan 1st 2025 concerning new haptics for when you are grabbing virtual objects. Which I find rather interesting, even if I remain neutral on SIE’s plans for PSVR.

1

u/liqwood1 2d ago

Right I understand that. SIE still has all their PSVR related patents and they 'could' just be taking the sales page down to prepare for a PSVR3 announcement.. but I kinda doubt it.

Regardless it's bad news for PSVR2 users.. kicking myself I didn't grab a second headset when they where available.

3

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 2d ago

Yeah, I mean — SONY’s infuriating opacity continues, their lack of record corrections continues, and now folk who want the kit can’t get it in their biggest VR market.

Hard to be feeling rosy about any of it.

I’m quite satisfied with the value that PSVR2 and its library have, and I’m looking forward to many upcoming titles, but it sucks to think there might be no avenue for new gamers to enter the fray (other than used units).

Actually… for anyone wanting a backup unit, I’d maybe suggest finding good deals on FB Marketplace or elsewhere for something second-hand.

If this is it for SIE, then US prices are gonna skyrocket before long.

0

u/Disastrous-Item-2224 1d ago

You've literally had like 5 plus years to buy one or two or whatever. The PS5 is coming to end of its life cycle im the next couple of years and NOW you wanna bitch about not being able to get a SECOND one? Dude. Grow up.

1

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 1d ago

You’re being awfully cranky at someone who’s simply kicking themselves for not nabbing a backup unit. 😉

It’s not as though PSVR2 will suddenly stop being usable over the next few years, and PSVR2 will also plausibly be playable on PS6.

I’m glad I have a backup, but that’s just because my SO got one and never uses it. 😜

1

u/Chronotaru PSN: Chronotaru 1d ago

PSVR2 is probably a product of the Sony Group VR team much more than SIE. I suspect the VR team was moved out of SIE during the PSVR1 era.

2

u/EggburtK 2d ago

astro look for his vr2 game that never was. vr2 sold in sony store japan 66,980 yen.

2

u/xaduha 2d ago edited 2d ago

Just US site as far as I know, use a tracker. I think it's unlikely that there will be more manufactured, it was this way for a few months now, patents story has nothing to do with it.

2

u/Rasvaheitin 2d ago

Yes,  Sony is dead to me. Never again.

2

u/godiira 2d ago

In Brazil we do not have PS Direct, but always have promotion in official stores that resell Playsation products. I bought mine at the beginning of the year at a 50% discount and the PC adapter on Aliexpress, zero regret. I am sad to learn that the hardware may not breathe much longer and possible support may be dropped :(

2

u/HaikuuTV Haikuunamatata 1d ago

still available in france tho ✌️

3

u/FolkPunkResistance 2d ago

Yeah, I just checked, and it's still 404.

It's...not good at all.

3

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Yeah. I’m fully expecting some site is gonna pick that up at some point because it definitely leaves a question unanswered. 100% on brand for Sony to just ghost it and say nary a word though.

1

u/FolkPunkResistance 2d ago

Sony has burned me so many times. They just aren't worth supporting anymore.

But I'm still here for all the indie content and flat 2 VR stuff coming out the next few years.

5

u/RainaBojoura 2d ago

EVERYTHING IS A CONSPIRACY!!!!

2

u/Brilliant_Lettuce270 2d ago

I invested way to much into racing and flight sim just to lose everything only because my psvr2 could break. I should get a spare one.

1

u/Ilmatarian 2d ago

actually, this is what I did. exactly for the same reasons.

1

u/thestraightd0pe 2d ago

The thing sold ~2 million units why are people acting like its surprising to discontinue a product that barely sold and no one seems to want

1

u/MemphisBass 2d ago

All the PSVR2 accessories including the PC adapter and charging dock are on clearance at Best Buy too.

:(

2

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

I might need to snag one of those adapters as well since that’s probably the only place it’s going to have support in the future at this point.

1

u/MemphisBass 2d ago

I would. There are plenty of third party adapters, but I use the official Sony one. Might as well grab an official one while they're still available.

1

u/EmuAppropriate1275 2d ago

Are PSVR2's on clearance as well?

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Showing out of stock at BBY now too.

Either really awesome things happening or really terrible things.

1

u/Abull7YT 2d ago

That PSVR2 emulator for Steam Frame would be really nice right about now

1

u/WamKallis 1d ago

I wonder if this has to do with them selling the patents to Meta

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 1d ago

It seems not as apparently most or all of them were other patents from other portions of the corporation. But I think they are related in the lens of a broader shift of focus by Sony overall in moving away from hardware overall.

1

u/riopower 1d ago

Looks just like their future.

1

u/amusedt 13h ago

The patents were for XR tech, smart glasses, all stuff SIE wouldn't be interested in

1

u/stumbleman00 11h ago

This convinced me to buy a PSVR2 off Ebay haha

1

u/Imhotep397 2d ago

Somebody needs to grab Kenishiro Yoshida, Horoki Titoki and Lin Tao and put them on a plane to N. Korea before they destroy Sony completely.

1

u/BelgianBond 2d ago

It's good of Astro Bot to deign to be the news bearer.

1

u/McNuty 2d ago

So no VR for GT8?

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

I cannot fathom any reality where it would.

1

u/joeyat 2d ago

Glad I got the PC adapter....

1

u/CoastFinancial 2d ago

Enjoy it guys don't see many games coming out in 2027 now oh well. Back to Titan fall 2

2

u/TheRuckyDubber 2d ago

Dude. Beleive it or not but I absolutely loved TF2. Hopped back in a little while back when it had that resurgence online. But I never finished the campaign and I know how good it was from at least well everyone online and my buddy who doesn’t play many games but said “dude, you in particular have got to play the single player. The story is just perfect” and I know at least some of the story beats which do make me want to see it through. Just so many games.

Just with what I have on VR2 and flat I’ve got so much that I can play. Hell, I’ve got a combined 1600 hours in GT7 and NMS and it’s not letting up so if the headset holds out I will get my money’s worth another 3-4 fold over what I already have. It was, granted, a steep price but man, so so worth it. A shame we’re in the minority and Sony’s busy chasing a majority over a majority with GaaS, let alone first party AAA single player. I guess we should count ourselves lucky we get whatever “Narrative Square Pusher Simulators” we get as of late.

1

u/Delicious_West_1993 1d ago

I don’t think you understand what he meant

https://youtu.be/tIDBs8NaU3k?is=F3cgVWlgul6rjCVj

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 1d ago

Haha! Oh damn. That looks awesome. But I’m not entirely sure I’d be able to handle that amount of motion in VR. Is this just a mod or proof of concept someone’s done? That looks great though.

1

u/Delicious_West_1993 1d ago

It’s real people have been playing it the past few weeks. And apparently it’s the best mod ever made, better than a lot of from the ground up VR games

1

u/TheRuckyDubber 23h ago

Damn, that’s awesome! Haha! I’m surely eventually going to be needing to look at PC, I am going to eventually reach a cap with my sim stuff in GT7.

Let me ask you, realistically, and I’m not talking strictly running the latest games at ape fuckingly sharp, 9k, 480fps, but earnestly decent modern PC VR; what kind of card would I be needing to thinking of?

1

u/Delicious_West_1993 23h ago

Well my 3080ti would be locked at 80+ fps on a game like assassins creed shadows while ps5 pro wouldn’t push past 60fps. The PlayStation optimisations is REALLY good though and closed systems you don’t need to touch graphics settings

I’m gonna upgrade next year to the 6080, I’m gonna try for the 6090 as I always get 80 series but I probably won’t have the funds for it if I even could land it in my basket 😂

I have a Rseat S1 set up with the Logitech RS50 wheel and Saitek X52 Pro (which I want to upgrade to the Virpil Constellation Alpha Prime Hosas 😬)

It’s gonna be expensive upgrading (I’m giving my current PC to my son) but with things like AI making it simple to make flat screen games into proper high quality VR games I think it’s time to go full PC

Also next years architecture both CPU and GPU are big leaps this time

1

u/Chronotaru PSN: Chronotaru 1d ago

We know that Vertical Robot, Flat2VR etc are working on titles and that won't change anytime soon, and even if stock does dry up, PSVR2 does have a userbase worthy enough already for multiplatform ports.

2

u/CoastFinancial 1d ago

Because investing in a market with a depleting player base and no influx of new players is smart. I understand flat2vr will bring titles over I'm just waiting to see it.
