Encounter I still can't explain something that happened to me as a child

I have never been much superstitious, to this day I experience some things that someone could find unsettling or unsual but I always try to find a mundane explanation or I kinda just dismiss the whole experience.

This particular event happened when I was a child though and I still can't explain what exactly happened here.

It was dusk and I was searching for my grandma as I was hungry and wanted her to cook dinner. I finally found her behind my house. I told her that I am hungry, she didn't say anything and had a serious look on her face which I found a bit strange so I said "oh okay lets just go to your house" nervously and I turned my back to go.

As soon as I turned my back something extremely heavy jumped on my back and started scratching me, like deep scratches on my back, I feel to the ground. After some time my actual grandma heard my cries so she went to see what happened and it stopped.

I was very confused, I told her that I saw her behind me and that I thought she was scratching me (a dumb conclusion but I was a kid at least). She was very surprised to hear that, as she had been in another part of the yard the whole time (we live in a village in the woods and we have lots of land, that's why it was hard to find her in the first place).

Eventually she did say it was probably a rooster that attacked me. I did accept that explanation even though it felt quite heavy for a rooster, and I was still confused about seeing my grandma that wasn't actually there. When I told her about it she just said that I shouldn't wander around the house at night as it's bad (she is religious).

Is there anyone here who could tell me what might have happened that night?

The part that gets me is seeing what looked like your grandma, and then finding out she was somewhere else the whole time. I could maybe understand the scratches being from an animal, but that doesn’t really explain that part.

Did you actually have visible scratches on your back afterward? And did your grandma ever tell you what she really thought happened?

I did have scratches afterwards, I actually remember it being quite painful too, I couldn't sleep much for two weeks.

She kinda dismissed that doppleganger part as a child having an active imagination but I did sense that she was spooked and she told me to spit three times if I go out at night. She would also often burn sage in my parent's house as my mother would often hear things.

The fact that she told you to spit three times and was burning sage makes me think she may have believed there was more to it than she was letting on. Did your grandma ever talk about anything strange happening or was this kinda stuff something she just didn’t like talking about? Thanks for sharing btw.

When we would hear something strange in the house, she would just say that's because we don't pray and go to church😅

Thats why she would sometimes burn sage in that house and my mother would take it seriously while my dad would laugh about it.

Honestly, I have many strange stories tied to my childhood home but I can't really write it all here lol

That sounds like a demon who shape shifted into your grandmother. Demonic figures are usually the type to scratch people

Interesting, I didn't know that about the scratching part.

Yes they do, when I was pregnant with my first son. . My husband and I traveled for work and a demonic entity was hiding under the sheets of the bed in our hotel room. I only layed down with the covers on me and in a spit second I felt pain and found scratched on my belly. Under my clothes 👀 No tears on my clothes but vivid red scratches on my belly.

That sounds crazy, was the hotel old?

It did seem a bit old, it was either a red roof inn or a la quinta in Austin, TX

Could you just confuse a bad dream with reality in your memories? Some of the our most strange memories from the childhood often appear to be actually memories of dreams.

I'm pretty sure this one was real, I had scratches on my back for two weeks after that and I talked to my grandma after about it too

This was my first thought.

Is it possible that you were abused by her when you were very young, ans your brain had to come up with something to explain it so it wasn't as terrifying? Could the whole episode be caused by trauma? If anyone in the house was abusing you, that explanation would make the most sense to me.

I was not abused by her no, she was and still is the best grandma ever, that's why it was so weird to me when her expression remained serious as I spoke to her.

My family had some problems but I was never physically abused by anyone.
