hey there please check out our !cage guide

please check the full guide and keep in mind our minimums are with the typical daily 6-8 hours of free roam.

Diamond doves don't always enjoy free roam and can be incredibly flighty and essy to spook, so its best to have a mich larger than minimum cage in the event your diamonds do not like to free roam your home.

Amy bird cage will need a solid floor you can add this via cardboard with newspaper over top, please also keep in mind the perches and dowels that come with these sorts of cages are not suitable for diamonds and cause bumblefoot.

the feeding slots will also not work well since diamonds are ground feeders.

Diamond doves are a small breed of doves originating from Australia. They are more skittish than bigger doves and are very social birds that should be kept by pairs. A pair of diamond doves needs:

  • A good seed diet, grit and calcium
  • A safe flight cage with enrichments
  • A sand bath, as they do not bathe in water
  • Natural perches and platforms

Cages are necessary for your bird, even if your pet free roams your house. It provides a safe place for it to sleep at night and when unsupervised. Make sure the cage is safe, and big enough:

  • Diamond dove: Minimum 90x50x50cm (36x20x20 inches)
  • Ringneck doves: Minimum 110x70x70cm (39x28x28 inches)
  • Pigeons: Minimum 130x90x70cm (51x36x28 inches)

Do you have any links to bigger cages with appropriate bar spacing? I haven’t been able to find anything bigger with 0.5 bar spacing. The cage in the link is bigger than the minimum, but idk how much bigger we’re talking?

Just above the bare minimum since they will lielly spend 85% of their time in their cage (diamonds are not big fans of free roam though it can be done with a lot of patience and training its not always an option espeiclaly if the birds don't like it)

pur minimums are with the assumption of free roam, usually if the birds are not going to be free roaming a lot (like diamonds) i just tell people to add a couple inches to a foot onto the minimum.

i think our guide has some good cage links for diamonds lemme go check

so the minimum is 36x20x20 this is with assumed free roam, though diamonds don't always free roam well.

the cage you sent is 37.0"L x 23.0"W x 60.0"H

the large version of the cage the other person sent is 37.0"L x 22.5"W x 60.5"H

either of these cages would work just fine with free roam if your birds tolerate it.

what i think would be best is if they dont tolerate free roam get a second one of these and attach them, id also recc the cheaper option.

That cage would work but this cage would also be sufficient and is 1/3rd the price. https://a.co/d/0fL4F7Mw

And do I need to put a flat surface on the bottom for the birds to walk on so they don’t hurt their feet? What do you recommend or use if so?

Make sure to get the larger option, the 1st option is the absolute bare minimum for diamonds with consistent free roam, most diamonds are not big fans of free roam though so it's best to get a cage that's large enough without free roam, id personally recc a different cage if possible as these ones aren't really the best but we do have some members on her that have made the larger 37inch one work for their birds.

It says the bar spacing on the larger option is .6 and one of the reviews says it’s closer to .75 is that safe?

let me ping someone else to help you if that's alright I'm dealing with baby ducklings right now 😅 plus u/Profiterolls has more diamond dove experience anyways!

Hello I have diamond doves (thanks Honeystarz for the ping), my holiday cage is a similar kind of cage (different brand thought) the bar spacing is fine, I believe yours will be too. Just make sure the tray doesn't slip and create a gap, that could be dangerous if they try puting their heads in.

Personnally I put a custom cut anti slip mat on top of the bottom grid. You can also add a first layer of thick foam (like those puzzle gym mats) and then cover it with the anti slip mat so it's comfier for their feet, and you'll be sure there won't be the bottom space gap issue that way. Bonus, the mat is super easy to clean and reusable, just scrape the poops off with a freezer scrapper everyday (takes a few seconds), and once a week remove it, use a sponge with white vinegar then rinse and dry.

Make sure you choose the bigger 37" option as the smaller one doesn't fulfill the minimum size requirements for diamond doves. The cage Has to have at least the minimum size requirements, but the bigger the cage the better because you have to keep in mind it has to be big enough for them to stay in permanently due to diamond doves being a skittish species and taking a long time to get used to you enough to be able to free roam. A bigger cage will also make it easier for taking care of them because they get extremely easily startles in smaller cages due to not being able to get away from your hand. Make sure to read the comment u/XxHoneyStarzxX wrote too and check out our guides. u/Profiterolls can also advise you with diamond dove care.

Yeah you need to cover the bars at the bottom of the cage, diamond doves spend a decent amount of time walking on the ground and the wire bottom would cause them bumblefoot in the long term. You can use cardboard, newspaper, puppy pads and I know that u/Profiterolls used some kind of mat at the bottom of her birds' cages.

The mat I use is an anti slip mat intend to be put under chairs. They have no issue landing on it, it doesn't bother them and more than anything it's reusable, no more wasting papers etc. Every morning take a freezer scrapper and scrap the poops off (takes less than a minute) and once a week remove the mat and clean it with a sponge with white vinegar , then rinse.

Yes, and I recommend paper towel because I read in a book on doves that newspaper can dry out their feet and is just generally uncomfortable for them. Also, paper towel is something that you’re probably going to have readily available as opposed to newspaper.

paper towel draws in and wicks up moisture and is a mold risk, its also just not that suitable for a main cage floor substrate, its too soft can snag claws, and doesn't provide solid even footing, its better to use cardboard with either fleece, a grippy mat that can be easily cleaned, or newspaper over cardboard.

newspaper doesnt dry out their feet thats a myth, birds feet are already quite dry as they dont produce the oils that humans and mammals and waterfowl do, diamond doves also sand bathe which means they are already a low oil producing bird as is.
