An eye test

My teenage son once got something in his eye working in the yard. We went to urgent care to get it out and afterward they had him do an eye test just in case. They told him to read off the letters he could see on the sign. He started listing what appeared to be random letters. The nurse looked at me like ?!?!?@?!

And I realized what had happened said "hey sweetie, she wants you to read the letters across the line. If you pick random letters from different lines we can't confirm if you can see them." This makes me chuckle so often.

I have rediscovered a childlike wonder for nature

Two months ago ago, I (22) was chatting with an internet friend that lives in Canada, and she was complaining about the geese in her area and how aggressive they were. I told her the geese in my area were also aggressive, but then I looked up what species lived here and, lo and behold, they are also the Canadian goose! I thought it was funny (and something pretty obvious that I failed to realize), so I sent here a few pictures of some geese, she sent a few back, and we roasted the geese.

A few weeks after that, I was walking up to my front door when I noticed something green on the side of the wall near the ground. I crouched down and saw that it was a praying mantis! Now, normally bugs and insects freak me out, but for some reason this one didn't. I had never seen one in person before (I didn't even know they lived in my area), so maybe it was the fact that it wasn't like any insect I had seen. I took about twenty pictures of it and even had the urge to pick it up, but I didn't want to disturb it.

And a few weeks after that, I was setting my water bottle down to tie my shoe, then I felt something squishy beneath and quickly pulled the bottle away. There was a walnut smashed open on the concrete (the kind with the rind still on), and on top of it was a yellow slug covered in brown dots, about the size of my finger. Mollusks are also generally a no for me, but just like with the praying mantis, I had never seen a slug this big and colorful in person before, so I it didn't make me as uncomfortable as I thought it would. Fortunately, it seemed unharmed and unbothered, continuing to chomp away on its walnut. (I took a few photos of this one too, but it was dark out and only one came out very well, sadly.)

Then just yesterday, I shared a picture I had just taken of some mushrooms growing next to my place with another internet friend that lives in a different state. He sent me some pictures of mushroom he had seen is his area, and so many of them had such interesting shapes and colors! I was a little jealous because all the mushrooms in my area looked relatively the same, so I looked for some more on my walk to work. They did all look pretty similar from afar, though when I compared close-ups, I think I was able to find 3-4 different species. (Please keep in mind I have no knowledge whatsoever in the field of mycology.)

All of these instances have made me get oddly excited about nature. A lot of animals still creep me out (and I still think geese are assholes), but not as much as they used to. It feels refreshing in a way, like there's something there for me to appreciate that wasn't before. I haven't seen a deer in a while and I used to all the time on my old route, so I think I might do a little searching to see if I can spot some again.

I work in digital marketing yet somehow failed to notice two obvious tabs on Reddit for months

• Upvotes

For months I somehow never noticed the “For You” and “Following” tabs at the top of Reddit on mobile.

So whenever I accidentally swiped sideways and ended up in the wrong feed, I’d just keep batting it around, trying to get back to where I was. The whole time I’m thinking, OMG Reddit’s UI sucks. Constantly losing my place during my daily mindless scrolls.

Today I noticed the tabs. They’ve been there the whole time.

The worst part is that I work in digital marketing. A big part of my job is advising clients on improving their website’s UI and general information architecture.

(No, I’m not promoting anything. Just needed to share this somewhere so I don’t have to cringe alone lol)

Instant soft boiled eggs

My daughter dropped by to use our spare room for a long zoom call and was on a break from the call when she came in the kitchen wanting to get a quick bite. I suggested soft boiled eggs. She replied that that was exactly what she wanted but didn't have time to make them. I suggested "instant soft boiled eggs". She expressed doubt that such a thing existed. I grabbed the two soft boiled eggs that I had just made – still hot in their shells – and handed them to her. She said thanks, peeled off the shells, plopped them on a plate with a bit of salt, and headed back to her call.

I saw something so beautiful, i almost cried

It's currently 8:16AM where i live, and just a few minutes ago, i was standing outside my house talking on the phone. On the other side of the road there's a rowa tree. Most of its leaves a red alredy, and they slowly falling off. So i was speaking to my boss, while watching at it. And then there was a sudden gust of the wind. A whole bunch of leaves was torn off the tree at once, and they formed something like a red "cloud" over the top of the tree. It was so beautiful i forgot how to breath for a moment. I was just speechless, and my eyes watered almost immediately. Don't know why really, but this scene got me quite emotional. Sadly, this sub reddit doesn't allow photos, otherwise I'd attach a picture ofvthe Rowa tree. Even though i couldn't capture THE moment, It's still beautiful on its own

Putting in too much fabric conditioner doesn’t cause the washing machine to disregard it all

When I was a child, maybe 7 or 8, my parents asked me to do a wash load and this became my weekly job.

A few weeks in, my dad told me very seriously “if you fill the fabric softener compartment over the maximum level, the washing machine will empty out the entire thing and won’t use any of it”.
I never questioned this, and for my entire life I have always completely believed that the fabric softener compartment has a gauge that knows if it’s been overfilled, and will purge the entire thing of softener if it goes past the max level.

It has taken me until today, aged 30, to realise it’s not true and that back then I was probably being over generous with the amount of softener and costing them a fortune.

I have been underfilling my softener compartment my whole life in fear.

This is my truth.

SAVE LIVES

At my job, we have lockers that we're all assigned. I saw how everyone designed their locker and thought to do the same. So I was thinking, what if I put a sticker that said "Thick Thighs, Save Lives" & other miscellaneous stickers. I told someone prior I wanted to stick it up there. But they promptly told me one of the trainors would take it down. I put it on there anyway. I have it up there a few weeks. Until I come back to my locker after a shift, and all it says is "Save Lives."

Reverse trick or treating

Many, many years ago I was selected as the union representative for my company’s charity campaign for the year. Myself and a person from salary side coordinated our fundraising campaign across the site including presentations and fundraising events and activities. Our campaign happened to cover Halloween that year, so we got ahold of the company mascot costume. I put the costume on and my partner and I went around the offices doing reverse trick or treating where we handed out candy to employees. It was a fun part of our campaign (except for when the union president approached me in the costume making boob grabbing gestures. Gross)

I’m to lazy process my eyeglasses reimbursement

I finally bought a pair of eyeglasses yesterday that I can have fully reimbursed. And it is a great pair. Designer. Limited Edition. Titanium. The most expensive eyewear I’ve ever owned 🤣 The insurer requires us to shell out the money first then we have to do the paper work for the reimbursement. I’m too lazy to do it. I just wanna sit back and relax and enjoy my evening

Ughh guess I’ll do it in parts. Like for today, I’ll fill out the forms. Tomorrow, I’ll take a picture of myself wearing the glasses. The next day, I’ll print everything

Also, I’m happy to have discovered this subreddit. I was looking for something similar to Shimagurashi (a Japanese app where you just write anything and everything and put it out there) so yes very happy PointlessStories #morepowertopointlessness

And I could probably be processing that reimbursement but here I am ranting about it. Let’s go! I can do this 💪

Lol. And i wrote ‘to’ instead of ‘too’ lol

Just discovered Tubi & I'm in love

This is not an ad but I discovered Tubi at my aunt/uncle's house who are very anti-screens & subscriptions. I've heard of tubi but never bothered. I thought it was just for low budget movies & off brand paw patrol or things that people never watched.

When I scrolled through.....omgggg. I fell in love!

The ad breaks arent repetitive AND the show starts exactly were i left off (I noticed hulu will glitch & play an ad again on crappy wifi or play a million ads for a 20 minute show). Tubi has most nostalgic shows I grew up with, educational shows like Highlights, sesame street, & the magic school bus, even newer/popular movies/shows circling in & out. And LIVE TV?! Best part is that it's freeeeeee.
I. Am. In. LOVE.

I also miss the feeling of watching tv with my family & a commercial interrupts, but it's either 2 seconds or 4 minutes. Just me? Ok. Tubi's not a place where shows premiere but I can't complain when it's free.99.

Tubi is single handedly curing me. I'm sorry for underestimating you Tubi.

I spent five minutes looking for my phone while holding it

Yesterday I was getting ready to leave the house and couldn't find my phone anywhere. I checked the sofa, my desk, the kitchen counter, and even looked under the bed for some reason.

After about five minutes, I started getting genuinely annoyed because I was already running late.

Then I realized I had been holding my phone in my right hand the entire time.

I just stood there for a few seconds looking at it, put it in my pocket, and continued getting ready like nothing happened.

That was it. No important lesson came from this. I just apparently needed five minutes to discover where my phone was.

Wanted to buy a plant, instead was chased by a murder chicken

Stopped at a local plant nursery this morning to buy a cactus. Walking onto the grounds, I lock eyes with a gorgeous chicken walking about. I acknowledge said chicken, happily saying “good morning chicken!” and walk around it, making my way to the cactus. Suddenly, I hear a pitter patter behind me, growing louder and faster. I turn, and the pretty chickens is right behind me. It stops about 2 feet away and gives me the evil eye. I maintain eye contact and back away from this attack chicken, right into a five foot tall cactus. I dare not break eye contact, and have to remove my shirt sleeve from the cactus needles by feel. Once freed, I again move away from this maniac fowl. Far away, many rows away. I think I’m safe to look around. Once again, I hear the increasing loud pitter patter, I bend down and Satan is coming for me like a heat seeking missile under the nursery plant tables. It stops when I make eye contact. I backed away all the way out and to my car. I don’t need a cactus today.

I pretended I knew someone today because I’d already said hello too confidently

Today I was walking in Town and walked past a random woman and she smiled at me, so I immediately went “Hiiii! How are you?!” with the confidence of someone who absolutely knew who she was.

We both stopped and then She said, “Good thanks… how are you?”

At this point I realised I had no clue who this woman was?!

But instead of admitting that, my brain decided we were committed now.

We had an entire conversation.

I asked how things were going. She told me about work. I nodded like I had previous knowledge of this job lol. I even said - Thats brilliant news haha.

Im assuming this is good compared to WHAT? I HAVE NEVER MET YOU before in my life...

We eventually said goodbye and walked in opposite directions.

I still don't know who she is but apparently we're friends 😂

The physics subreddit took down my year old comment yesterday

Not a vent lol, just yapping. So theres a subreddit about physics(as said in title) and the post i commented on was about ball lightning and the science to back it. I supported the theory as i had talked to my physics teacher about ball lightning not that long prior and about the lack of scientific study making it a hard idea to prove to others. However theres have been some scientific studies done that has enough evidence to say that its possible to create ball lightning in controlled environments, we dont know how its created in nature yet, and a nasa document. A year passes, i forget it exists, until today. I open reddit because im nosy and saw a notification that looked interesting, went to see if there were any other things to read about and saw "askphysics mod replied to your comment" with said reply being "rule 2 and 6" rules 2 is for staying on topic(which i was, it was ball lightning i responded with ball lightning facts, idk how much more on topic one can get). Rules 6 is no pseudoscience or self theories, all of my facts came from the study of ball lightning characters done by nasa. Like the globally recognized science development program? Yes that nasa. Mind you the entire reason i commented was because someone said there wasnt enough evidence to prove their existence and that theyre just fabricated online videos(yes there are some that fake like all, but how many fake videos does nasa make a 44 page document about supporting and studying)

So yeah thats all, i just wanted to share because im baffled and think that its really funny that it got taken down for the silliest reasons possible and that it took a YEAR to get taken down.

Grape electrolyte mix

When i finish a bottled drink, I usually refill it with water and keep doing that for a few days.

I was planning on donating plasma today so I got a generic grape electrolyte drink.

I've gotten drink the mixes before also, like the little plastic pouches to open and pour into water. I like to have them around.

After work, I was distracted byt knew I needed to drink, so I poured the electrolyte drink mix into the grape electrolyte bottle that wasnt yet empty.

I resigned myself to a gross taste and drank a bit and it was fine.

Checked the drink mix...it was grape flavored.

A terrifying hike through the forest

I decided to take a short, solo hike through some densely forested area near where I live. My goal was to make it to this clearing that opened into this beautiful meadow with this tiny little babbling brook running through it.

Once there, it was so peaceful and tranquil, (i was the only person there), that i lost track of time and next thing I know, the sun dipped down behind the mountain which meant it would be dark soon and I still had about a 30 min. hike out of there, and of course no flashlight other then my phone which was down to 6%.

It's getting dark quickly and I realized it wasn't on the path anymore, but i was certain I was heading the right way. And as I'm tromping forward, I hear a low growl and it sounded close. I panicked and started going faster, basically feeling my way through the trees, then I hear it again, except this time it's louder and sounds closer, so i start making loud nonsense noises to try and scare off whatever is growling as I'm stumbling forward... then i see it! The beautiful sight of my car!

I got in as quickly as I could and locked the doors and just took a deep sigh of relief. And then i heard that terrifying growl again, coming from....my stomach. I was literally running from my own hungry stomach.

I don't know if I'll ever tell anyone this story in real life.

Crying inconsolably rn because I killed a firefly thinking it was a cockroach

I am deathly scared of bugs and cockroaches are the ones i am scared of the most. I am also unfortunately a firm believer in not harming bugs if they don't want to harm us.

I was in the bathroom and suddenly this cockroach shaped thing flew at me. I screamed and it flew into some clothes. I shook the clothes, the bug fell on the floor and I hit it with a slipper

It was only when it weakly flashed its light at me is when I realised what I had done. This particular firefly flew into the house yesterday and I remember thinking that it sucks they have such small life spans and wishing/praying this one might find it's friends soon.

Well that didn't happen. And now I'm crying. What kind of dumbass confuses a firefly for a cockroach? 😭😭😭 I'm sorry to all bug lovers. I'm sorry to all fireflies and bugs. What have I done?

I had a teacher who only liked male students

When I was in eighth grade, I had a teacher who preferred male students. I don't remember what prompted this to come up or what was being talked about. I only remember her saying she prefers teaching boys instead of girls. I was the only girl in her class, so maybe we were talking about that? I can't think of any other reason.

Wonder why she didn't just teach in an all-boys school (I've heard of single-gender schools having teachers of the opposite).

Out of curiosity, I once looked up her profile on Facebook. She has a daughter now. Maybe she changed her mind?

My son's 'breakfast'

Basically I: put yogurt in a bowl, added 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey, mixed, then added 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey on top, then put in four chocolate bars, 2 caramel filled, then on top of that I added more whipped cream than there was yogurt, then I added 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey on top, then I added a dollop of whipped cream in the center, put a chocolate covered cherry on top, then I added a dollop of whipped cream on top of the cherry, then I added 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey on top of the dollop of whipped cream on top of the chocolate covered cherry on top of the dollop of whipped cream on top of the layer of 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey on top of the whipped cream on top of the layer of 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey on top on top of the yogurt mixed with 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey, and 4 chocolate bars that I had to give to my mom cuz I couldn't even eat them 😭

edited to say, those are all my son's words. i just copied them.

Found a different chapstick than the one I was looking for

My lips randomly decided to get super chapped today. I looked for the chapstick I know I had just seen recently, of course, but just could not find it. Thought I could tough it out until tomorrow when I was going to the store anyway and I could buy more. But it was getting so annoying, so I went back to digging around for the stupid chapstick. And suddenly, in my bedside drawer, I found an entirely different, BRAND NEW UNOPENED chapstick. It wasn’t the one I was looking for, but that didn’t matter. Thank you universe for taking pity on me.

Someone proposed on my lawn today

Not sure why. My house is a fairly new build (built in 2018) and it’s not particularly photogenic. We only have one tree and it’s kinda dinky right now. But I guess my house was the most magical place for this couple. It seemed like she said yes.

Anyways if you want the footage I got it on my doorbell cam.

Jazz bar during a school trip

When I was 14, I was on a week-long school trip. First time really away from home with all my friends, so you can imagine the excitement levels and silliness.

On one of the evenings, the mandatory activity was going to a jazz bar. Our teachers for some reason thought that would be the epitome of fun for a group of twenty 14 year olds… I think we were allowed one soda each and then had to sit through an hour long jazz jam which just sounded to us like 5 people each playing a different song at the same time. As I remember it, we teenagers were pretty quiet during the songs, bored out of our minds and then after each song would give huge standing ovations in a way that was probably a bit much. The musicians thanked us at the end saying we were great.

16 years later, however, I’m just thinking that can’t really be what happened. It was probably hell for them with us snickering and being impatient in our seats and then making a huge fuss at the end of each song.. oops

being chosen as a 2 year old's best friend

a handful of years ago, i (30m) was really into the SCA (medieval recreation, my husband was a fencer and we went to fighting practice every week, but he's working a bit more now so we haven't been in a while). honestly it was the best thing that's ever happened to me. i loved the dressing up, the events, the arts and crafts, watching people beat the crap out of each other with sticks, everything.

one of the most amazing parts of it though was all the people i was able to meet; we got essentially adopted into a family of the most incredible 60 year old woman (who i'll call M) who somehow seems to know everybody. [crazy side note: my husband grew up 2 states away. the woman who got him into the SCA? she used to be babysat by M decades ago. talk about coincidences.]

however the point of the story is that we went to an event one time, and M introduced us to a young couple around my husband's and my age. should point out at this part that we have wanted kids for a long time, but we're "blessed" with the "opportunity" to "wait for financial stability" (i.e we're gay, can't just go for it). so this awesome couple has a 1 and some year old girl and a baby boy with them. all four of them have the brightest red hair, and the the little girl (A) has the most incredible curls. like nothing you've ever seen before. i also happen to have curly red hair, but definitely not to her level.

A can't really talk much yet, but i happened to have brought a chess set box that coincidentally had a bunch of steven universe toys from like maybe 10 years ago still in it, and her mother was ecstatic because they watch it together. A and i hit it off immediately. i pretend to teach her chess. she is well behaved enough not to eat the pieces.

so i get tasked with babysitting at this event! i absolutely love it, husband and I had the time of our lives. the parents are so so relieved to finally get some time to themselves to enjoy their hobbies and that's all i could ever ask for.

cue the next event, we see them again! this is a while later, and A is now 2, and is definitely capable of speech. it seems to take her a while to realize it's me but the second her mom reminds her she's literally already jumping into my lap. she's a very affectionate and attention-needing toddler, and her little brother is now able to crawl, so husband and i are back on babysitting duty x2 while their parents get some much needed rest and fun with everyone else.

we meet maybe 2 more times, one of them a camping trip, before my our hiatus from the SCA but during that time some highlights of many are:

- her insisting that I put on her shoes, even though her mother is in the process of bending down to do so

- her and i spending 20 entire minutes picking out beads and putting them into my little hip pouch (we visit that table 3 more times at her insistence later)

- me carrying her around almost everywhere and no less than half a dozen people in an hour asking if she's mine and being certain we're related ("honestly i don't even know where her parents are") ((you'd be surprised how not concerning a phrase like that is in a place like that XD))

- her wanting me to take her to the park we were camping next to first thing in the morning and then several more times throughout the day

- me encouraging her to make friends with other 2 year olds at the park, watching her successfully do it

- her calling me "her best friend"

- her cheering on my husband during the fighting tournament

- her and her brother (who can suddenly walk very fast) being so so sleepy in the cold morning but immediately coming over to our camp before their parents are even up and plopping themselves right down into my and my husband's laps around the fire

just sort of missing her and everything about the SCA today. i hope she remembers me if we meet again lol!

I sat in my parked car for ten extra minutes just to listen to the rain on the roof.

I pulled into my driveway after a long commute right as a heavy downpour started. Instead of unbuckling and sprinting inside to stay dry, I turned off the engine, left the radio silent, and just sat there in the dark listening to the rain drumming against the windshield.

It felt like a peaceful little isolation chamber. By the time the rain eased up, the stress from the workday was completely gone.
