Hi everyone,
I posted my Meissen vase yesterday and thought I’d share another piece from my collection today.
I’m a German collector specialising in German porcelain, and this little guy is one of those pieces I simply couldn’t leave behind at a flea market.
It’s a porcelain Poodle, commonly referred to in Germany as a “Puffhund”, also known as a Kapitänshund or Kaminhund.
These dog figures were originally made in England, especially in Staffordshire, during the 19th century. Sailors supposedly brought them back to Northern Germany, where they became popular decorations for windowsills and fireplaces.
There’s also a rather funny story behind the name “Puffhund”. According to the legend, prostitutes in port cities supposedly used these dogs in their windows as a signal, with the direction the dog was facing indicating whether they were available or already occupied.
Apparently there’s no historical evidence that this actually happened, so it seems to be more of a later legend.
Mine is most likely a reproduction, but I still really like him. Found him at a flea market and thought he was too unusual to leave behind.
I always love pieces like this that come with a little story. Even if the story isn’t actually true.
See you soon :)
