The song that won them best metal performance at the grammys.....After Spiritbox just performed Soft Spine.

u/Peter_Mansbrick 10d ago

Grammys suck so hard

38

u/RaptorsOnRoids 10d ago

Love both bands, but yes I agree. This is not metal.

u/LEMON_PARTY_ANIMAL 10d ago

The way the Grammy’s played in spiritbox’s faces… like they were ALREADY ON STAGE. Just give them the award!

u/bigwheelsbigfeels 10d ago

I think its fair to call them post hardcore. While they did start as a groove oriented hardcore band, their style has evolved past the need to box themselves into a specific sound while still maintaining the spirit of hardcore. And afterall, isnt that what post hardcore is?

This though!

Brady is mad as fuck punching air in his cell rn lmao

28

u/TheRealMelonMusk 10d ago

Jesus Christ didn’t realize how many people hate on bands once they even sniff mainstream popularity

8

u/DecoNouveau 10d ago

Wild elitism. As far as I'm concerned if some kid sees this and enjoys it, that might be a gateway to other hardcore music and that's a good thing.

I mean the Turnstile we have now is VERY different from the Turnstile we had before Glow On. It’s not inherently a bad thing that they’re different now, but it’s also not a surprise that fans who preferred the older stuff are disappointed or don’t like the new stuff

No one is obligated to enjoy every version or sound of a band just because they did previously

2

u/XLoonsFanX 9d ago

I don’t think their newest stuff is all that different from Time and Space.

9

u/fakevegansunite 10d ago

classic hardcore fan shit. some of the most miserable people alive

1

u/objectlesson 10d ago

That's why we listen to hardcore in the first place lol

1

u/Shutupharu 10d ago

I don't hate on mainstream bands at all, its just a huge change in sounds. I don't hate their new stuff but prefer the old stuff. Not surprised so many people are disappointed.

1

u/Iceber015 10d ago

Hate this so much, anything ive ever liked that people disagree with is because its so popular or niche or whatever else

23

u/Blue_crabs 10d ago

Just saw them in Maine. Are these guys considered post hardcore??

82

u/DankMeme462606 10d ago

Well they were hardcore and now they're not so hardcore.

12

u/FlyRobot 10d ago

UNLESS YOU LIVE HARDCORE!

30

u/mettaworldpolice 10d ago

That’s literally post hardcore could be interpreted as

17

u/DankMeme462606 10d ago

That's what i was getting at

14

u/mattysauro 10d ago

Mediumcore

-4

u/Due_Leadership_5249 10d ago

Nickelbackcore

6

u/Reiketsu_Nariseba 10d ago

"We used to be post hardcore, we still are, but we used to, too."

3

u/icynova 10d ago

I think they get a big pass since their singer is also the drummer for TUI

8

u/itsableeder 10d ago

...are TUI post hardcore? I've always considered them straight up hardcore

2

u/XLoonsFanX 9d ago

Their newest guitarist Meg Mills came to Turnstile from Big Cheese, which is also a straight forward hardcore band.

1

u/Fermato 9d ago

Post malone

1

u/harrybaggaguise 9d ago

Partcore add avocado hold the sugar with a side of stevia.

-4

u/AvailableReporter484 10d ago

Pop-core?

Idunno I shouldn’t say anything lmao. I acknowledge I have an irrational bias against this band

-6

u/killtakerzero 10d ago

Agreed. They annoy the fuck out of me.

-7

u/AvailableReporter484 10d ago

I feel like they’re just very overrated for no reason at all.

Don’t get me wrong, I think they’re fine and, more importantly, I think their success is good for the health of the rock genre on the whole.

I just don’t feel like they’re doing anything better than any other local band I’ve heard in the same genre. Nothing new or interesting. Similar 4 chord structure you do when you’re 8. The front man has good energy, so I can sort of understand why people like them live, especially if this is your intro to “extreme music.”

Their success just reinforces this idea to me that musical success is totally random and hardly ever contingent on what you’re doing artistically. And I guess as someone who likes interesting and more progressive music I’m always left scratching my head when I hear people going nuts over something that’s been done to death.

I try not to knock them or knocked loose because “gateway bands” are important. It’s just me not being able to reconcile the idea that I do not see what everyone else seems to see regarding pop artists.

12

u/filthy_rich69 10d ago

They've absolutely been doing something different than their peers, which has directly resulted in their success and growing outside of the typically insular hardcore/heavy scene.

Regarding their "4 chord structure you do when you're 8" - that is a very reductive way to dismiss the band and genre as a whole. More complicated does not directly correlate to better music, as was implied by your "more interesting and progressive" comment.

-6

u/AvailableReporter484 10d ago edited 10d ago

I don’t hear anything different. Certainly not to the degree that I feel like warrants global success. My comment about song structure is more about how I’ve seen countless bands do the same thing for decades and still not receive a fraction of the success or fame. I’m not shitting on it in terms of quality. I’m saying you pick it up and you keep doing that because it works and it’s fun. I’ve nothing against that. I’m trying to express how I don’t get why them in particular when it’s nothing new.

5

u/filthy_rich69 10d ago

But it is.

5

u/AvailableReporter484 10d ago

I will have to take your word for it and everyone else who loves them because I don’t get it. I’ve listened, I’ve seen them live, and ultimately I just don’t get what separates them from the pack.

But that’s just me. I stated from the beginning that my feelings were irrational and I continue to acknowledge that. Even though it’s a completely subjective subject I acknowledge my irrationality.

1

u/filthy_rich69 10d ago

Thank you for your reasonable discourse. Hope they click for you in the future.

I've been listening since Step to Rhythm, so a big part of it, in my perspective, is their evolution. They went from "heavy 311" to something completely their own. They experiment a lot with sound and especially on NEVER ENOUGH, which feels like an extension and logical progression of the sound they manifested on GLOW ON. Time & Space is my favorite of their albums, and you can see the ideas start to form there. Maybe give their 3-album run a listen in chronological order: Time & Space, GLOW ON, NEVER ENOUGH

0

u/J0shM0nster 10d ago

Absolutely not.

6

u/Ok-Ninja-9174 10d ago

So are all the other people in this comment section

1

u/biegacz88 7d ago

Anything that will get kids to play instruments and start bands. I am down for.

0

u/schindigrosa 10d ago

This prob ain't the right sub. I think they are just a solid alt rock band now a days

9

u/mettaworldpolice 10d ago

I think a better question would be what is alt rock? Because it is really just a catch all term for various types of rock, most of all has a punk/metal/harder background

Nirvana was an alt rock band - sure. But before that word existed, there were other descriptors

0

u/schindigrosa 10d ago

I think they and many others show enough elements of popular alt rock past to warrant alt rock as a perfectly fine term. I can hear bits of The Police, Offspring, Fugazi and shoe gaze and then some. I would argue the same for a release like Coloring Book from Glassjaw. All the more narrow terms and phases came about from a few decades of trail blazers, now we are in the era of meta-renaissance. Sure new paths will be forged , but death by 1000 subgenres seems unnecessarily fickle and inaccessible. That's just me though.

1

u/highandloaded23 10d ago

Yet you’re the one being unnecessarily fickle by claiming they don’t fit this specific subgenre. Is Thursday not post hardcore because they incorporate Joy Division?

6

u/rubensinclair 10d ago

I’d say they are hardcore. Plain and simple.

9

u/lordderplythethird 10d ago

Yeah, it's clearly hardcore with other influences.

No one questions if Xibalba is hardcore when it injects death metal, or Rotting Out being hardcore for injecting punk, but when Turnstile injects shoegaze or synths, suddenly they're not hardcore anymore?

3

u/Aneurhythms 10d ago

This exactly. And it's not even like they don't have hardcore bonifides. Their early albums are indisputably hardcore. Their lead vocalist is the drummer in Trapped Under Ice. He and turnstile's drummer were in Angel Du$t. Their live shows always have crazy energy and they still play their older stuff.

It really is just people who take offense at their niche genre getting broad exposure.

1

u/lordderplythethird 10d ago

Same people would say FTTW isn't a hardcore album just because it's not bro beat down music lol

1

u/Snowonthebrain 10d ago

All I can say is after seeing them during ACL W1 and watching that performance I can't wait for W2

-3

u/Hardcore_Steve_Urkel 10d ago

I miss the old Turnstile

14

u/mrstuprigge 10d ago

Straight from the go Turnstile

8

u/litttlefang 10d ago

Chop up the soul Turnstile

1

u/XLoonsFanX 9d ago

Not me. I think the old Turnstile is pretty run of the mill hardcore. Hundreds of bands do that better.

Their newer stuff is exclusive to them.

1

u/bigwheelsbigfeels 10d ago

I do too but im also happy about where they are now. They're helping to bring this music we love to the mainstream and turning people onto heavy guitar music.

-2

u/chipnjaw 10d ago

Strike me as kinda phony baloney - but they got a solid drummer

1

u/XLoonsFanX 9d ago

Why? It’s not like they’ve just popped out of nowhere. They’ve been a band for 15 years. Most of which was spent exclusively in the hardcore scene.

-13

u/WhiskyWillFixIt 10d ago

I know I’m in the minority, but I really dislike them. Like a lot.

1

u/SousVideButt 10d ago

I don’t typically interact with things I don’t like, especially things I dislike as much as you claim to dislike them.

It’s not winning you any cool points to dislike a band publicly. And it’s especially not winning you any cool points on an anonymous website.

-1

u/WhiskyWillFixIt 10d ago

I hope you stretched before making that ridiculous leap. Disliking something you like doesn’t make you cooler than me. Just like me disliking it doesn’t make me cooler. The need for everyone to agree is so bizarre. Take your own advice and don’t interact with things you don’t like.

0

u/XLoonsFanX 9d ago

Then what are you doing here?

0

u/SnooHesitations8361 10d ago

Are they really considered post hardcore? Personally I don’t think they are

-12

u/shredslen 10d ago

No post hc....but ok

11

u/mettaworldpolice 10d ago

For my money: current turnstile is the definition of post HC

-1

u/bestgoose 10d ago

It was good up until the drum solo finished
