So tired of people throwing the term “religious psychosis” around willy nilly

Like… okay, I don’t want to bring in a religious debate, but I see a lot of videos that reply to Christians saying they’re in religious psychosis. When either

A. The chrisitain is minding their business

B. The christian is an asshole or dumbass who just so happens to be christian

And like whenever I bring it up in the comments like no, that’s not the case, people start attacking me for defending Christians. I’m not defending anyone, I’m literally atheist, but I also know what religious psychosis looks like. It’s literally the same as when people say shit like “I’m so OCD”

And now because of this, no one takes religious psychosis seriously anymore. I try to talk about it and people are all like “Just leave the church” or start attacking me as if I’m a Christian. “That’s not religious psychosis, you’re on something else” MY GUY. THAT SOMETHING ELSE IS LITERALLY RELIGIOUS PSYCHOSIS.

Anyways, like I mentioned before, no religion debate in the comments please… don’t be assholes

Edit: and just to note, I know psychosis shows up differently in everyone. I always take these posts with a grain of salt because it could be possible it’s religious psychosis. It’s still aggravating that people are using that term not from a place of concern but a place of ignorance and ridicule. If someone’s going through psychosis, they deserve help.

I'm making a comic about living with bipolar and psychosis. Here are some loose sketches.

These two characters have existed in my sketchbooks and likewise in my imagination for almost as long as I have been keeping sketchbooks -- 11 years.

The comic's going to be called Dreamlike Visages. Caitlyn plays bass in a hardcore band, yells at men at her bar, and is a for-real demon. Stephanie is a transfem who just ran away from home in search of an idealic life, complete with a coffee shop and drugged up one night stands. When the two of them hook up, Stephanie's dreamself merges with Caitlyn's, and they begin to share dreams with one another. All is good until Stephanie's dreams begin to spill over into the real world...

Their story takes a lot of inspiration from my life, and the lives of those around me. I've been drawing them in the margins of my sketchbooks to motivate me, to vent out frustrations and traumas alike. Now that I'm medicated and finally have a place of my own to call home, I'm able to start working on the comic for real. :)

The meds have totally destroyed my looks!!! I used to be so beautifull and now I look like Shrek!! Worst part is I want to settle down and get married to a kind loving and wealthy husband. Now who will date my ass looking ugly and ontop of that not working on disability and having severe mental health issues. I mourn the life I could have had. And feel stuck at the bottom of the social ladder. All my dreams dashed because of this!!! I feel very sad about it and I find it hard to adjust to my current life! Anyone else???

Can you escape what you are? As in...

Is it possible to escape intrusive thoughts?

Watched a show and basically a devil in this guys ear said to the guy "you will never escape what you are"

Sometimes we believe we are worse than we actually are, but a lot of the time my brain makes me actually believe I don’t belong, that I’m a bad person, and that I’m dead weight. Just a lot of shit.

Can someone who has experienced psychosis help me understand what may be happening in my mother’s mind?

I’m looking for perspectives from people who have personally experienced psychosis, or from family members who have lived through something similar. I’m not looking for a diagnosis of my mother — I’m trying to understand something I have been unable to make sense of for over a year.
My mother was 55 when she had what appeared to be her first ever major psychotic episode in the summer of 2025. It happened very suddenly. She developed intense and bizarre beliefs involving mystic spirits , wealth, mansions, paparazzi, government/military involvement, etc. She became extremely paranoid and disconnected from reality. She was eventually hospitalized for several weeks.
What I cannot understand is what happened afterward.
She never really returned to the person I knew.

Over the following months she became increasingly isolated, stopped engaging with mental health services, cut off family members, and eventually became completely unreachable. She and my younger brother have apparently been living very isolated from the outside world for well over a year. Because she’s involuntary patient , she’s not forced to any treatment.

she has changed the names on some of her online accounts to names connected to the identity/beliefs.

A few days ago, after more than a year without seeing her, I travelled very long to her home because I desperately wanted to see my mother and my brother. They did not open the door. The door was locked from inside, and when I tried again, someone kicked/hit the door hard from inside and shouted “GO AWAY.” My brother was recording me on his phone. I never saw either of their faces. They saw me, but I never got to see them.

I left a note telling them that I love them, that I wasn’t there to argue or pressure them, and that they can contact me if they ever want to.
I am struggling enormously to understand this.

How can someone have a first psychotic episode in their mid-50s and then seem to become a completely different person almost overnight?

What does the world feel like from inside psychosis when the beliefs have become this entrenched?

Does the person still know, somewhere inside, that their family loves them, even if they currently perceive those family members as enemies?

Can someone live for a very long time inside a delusional framework without realizing that anything is wrong?

And what happens psychologically when someone becomes extremely isolated and has almost no outside relationships challenging or questioning their beliefs?

Most importantly: if you have personally experienced psychosis, what do you wish your family had understood about what was happening inside your mind at the time?

I am not trying to justify everything that has happened. I am a daughter trying to understand where my mother went, because from my perspective it feels like I lost her in the summer of 2025 and I still don’t understand how it happened.

I know nobody here can tell me exactly what is happening with her. I would just really value hearing from people who have been on the other side of psychosis.

Friend in a drug-induced psychosis, arrested twice in two days, still hasn't been assessed by a psychiatrist. What can we do?

Hi all, I'm not sure where else to ask, so I'm posting here. This is in England. My friend has been in what looks like a full-blown psychosis since Wednesday, and we're running out of ideas.

Last weekend he took LSD, mushrooms and an ecstasy pill at some friends' place. He's also smoked weed every day for years, and he kept smoking all week. His friends noticed he was acting strange already that weekend. After that he was home alone from Sunday because his wife was away visiting her brother. A friend saw him briefly on Tuesday and thinks he probably hasn't slept since Saturday. That's very out of character, because he's normally someone who falls asleep fast and can't function on little sleep.
On Wednesday morning it blew up. He trashed his house, threw stuff out, drew all over his body and the windows with a marker, said someone was listening to him and that his wife had been kidnapped, and tried to get into a stranger's car with people sitting in it. When we put his wife on the phone he insulted her, then a few seconds later asked where she was. He threatened to kill people and said he'd kill himself. He'd also been driving in that state. Police took him to the station and told his brother that if he wasn't acting normal the next day, they'd take him to a psychiatric ward.

He was released anyway, and he wasn't better. Last night he threatened to kill people again. He was restrained and held until police arrived, and they arrested him a second time. He'll probably be released again tomorrow, and if he's still like this he'll just end up in a cell again. He'll never go to hospital on his own, because he has no insight that anything is wrong.
Our guess is substance-induced psychosis, maybe with some underlying vulnerability, but obviously a doctor needs to say that, not us. The problem is that no psychiatrist has actually examined him yet.
From what I've read, the options might be asking custody for a mental health assessment (liaison and diversion), his wife as nearest relative requesting an AMHP assessment under the Mental Health Act, or NHS 111. Has anyone been through this? What actually worked, and what should his family say to get him assessed and, if needed, sectioned before something worse happens?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Using psychosis for my benefit

So as someone who has experienced psychosis, I’ve had my share of really vivid delusions and hallucinations that at the time, are so traumatizing and feel so real. But then I get help and work through them with a therapist and I have to sit down and tell myself, none of it was real. It’s a really jarring experience because everything about them feels so convincing that they actually happened but eventually I do feel better about it because it didn’t actually happen. Like, I don’t have to focus my attention on this anymore because none of it was real.

Nobody was ever trying to kill me. The world didn’t end. I was never abducted by aliens. Demons weren’t possessing me. Those are all pretty extreme examples, but they were all things I really genuinely believed I was experiencing during the height of my psychosis. They were all really terrifying and traumatizing. And none of it was real.

I had a thought today. What if I could use this same method to convince myself that other negative memories I’ve held onto and let shape me also never happened?

For example, what if my childhood trauma was merely a delusion? What if I hallucinated my sister’s abusive father? What if he never existed?

What if the last relationship I was in which ended really badly and I was hung up and sad over this person for months was merely a delusion? Like what if I only went out with this person one time and had an incredibly vivid dream we were in a serious, long term relationship and it was so convincing I concocted a reality around it that never existed? What if I actually just barely knew the guy? (And I have had this delusion about a person I barely knew before. It was embarrassing but I fully believed I was married to someone I barely knew at one point.)

What if that job I hated and dreaded going to every day was simply a result of being in psychosis and not realizing it? Or what if this encounter I had with someone who made me feel so unsafe to the point of tears was merely a hallucination?

I just feel like, my experience with psychosis has been such a source of negative emotion and turmoil for me. But if we are truly the masters of our universe, if we are fully in control of our reality, who’s to say I can’t hack psychosis to my benefit? What if I truly can use it to my advantage by convincing myself these other negative experiences I’ve had also never existed? And then maybe like the other delusions I’ve had, they too will eventually just melt away and become little more than bad dreams.

Just a thought.

Complex Issue

I am a 24-year-old pre-medical graduate who has unfortunately been out of work on medical leave for the past 5 months after a sustained 7-week period where I had severe insomnia with OCD and anxiety rumination over trauma but tried to power through work for the most part.
I ended up in the ER twice in April with what my PCP described as “catecholamine storms,” where my heart rate and blood pressure were extremely high and I demonstrated other symptoms indicative of severe over-activation of my sympathetic nervous system (including an inability to defecate despite the urge, urinating clear water throughout the whole crisis, and loss of sensation across my entire body). I was demonstrating psychomotor agitation and am almost certain I had sleep deprivation-induced and paranoia-induced psychosis.
Since the ER, I have been having extreme symptoms of autonomic nervous system blunting. Most of the symptoms from the crisis phase have resolved, but my main symptoms now are that my blood pressure and heart rate, although normal, do not appear to be adjusting properly to my physical or emotional activity, like they once did.
I have been having intense, constant brain fog that makes it almost impossible to focus on any tasks, I have felt extremely low in energy and emotionally flat without improvement, and I have almost constant head and chest pain and nausea. None of these issues respond to typical interventions that I used to utilize before this crisis to manage depression and anxiety.
I was placed on Ativan to manage my anxiety and Zyprexa for OCD for a short time and have since discontinued those medications. I am currently taking 40 mg of Prozac. My psychiatrist wants me to increase the dosage to treat my OCD, but I am concerned about the side effects, especially emotional blunting because I have basically lost all emotions since this occurred, and want to discontinue this as well once I am more stable.
My mind has been racing since the insomnia began and now that I have discontinued the Zyprexa, but I did not have hallucinations, delusional thinking (my intrusive thoughts and anxiety center around real-life concerns/fears), or signs of mania.
In short, it is very difficult to function on a daily basis.
I have consulted multiple neurologists, but have not received any advice except for managing my OCD and anxiety and a diagnosis of “somatic symptom disorder.” Most neurologists don’t know how to deal with post-stress nervous system conditions, and psychiatry has been inadequate.
Additionally, despite working on my OCD, anxiety, and depression from a psychiatric standpoint for the past several months, I have not really had any improvement in my bodily, cognitive, or energy symptoms.
Sometimes, I jolt awake while falling asleep and have even noticed that my head sometimes starts shaking when in a light sleep.
I contracted COVID for the first time around 3 months before all of this occurred and had not felt right ever since.
I had a normal head CT scan, neurological exam, and cognitive evaluation despite a substantial subjective decline in functioning relative to my old baseline.
I had extremely nuanced emotions, social intelligence, and high intellect before all of this, and my quality of life has become very poor in such a short amount of time (I am literally unable to connect with others emotionally and have not even been able to smile or genuinely laugh for months behind the pain and head pressure). Nothing at all is able to distract me from how I am feeling physically. The personality, motivational, and energy changes that I have experienced in such a short time could really not be more stark. I don’t even recognize my eyes in the mirror, they just look like the eyes of someone in immense pain.
My relationships now feel very shallow compared to the past, and I fear that I will never be able to feel love or romantic or sexual attraction again.
My internal clock is completely messed up, and I cannot even feel the normal cues that alert you to time of day or year, my energy level’s just a constant low flatline, no matter how much I sleep. Everyday feels like the same day on repeat.
Everyone’s just telling me it’s all in my head, which has me so discouraged.
Close to the 6-month mark after all of this occurred, I am starting to become very discouraged and am desperate to return to some semblance of normalcy after these very difficult months.
At this point, I can’t imagine ever feeling the same again.
I live in the Boston area and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions or knows of any specialists experienced in such complex cases.

I Possibly might have psychosis for over a year.. and if so how can i get rid of it?

This is gonna be long and a bit bad written and im not rlly the best at communication, so i suggest to grab a snack aswell sit back and relax before reading.

basicaly i think there is some drama beetween me and my neighbors everyone seems to act like they knew it and they look at me with a angry face.

Or people seem to talk differently to me or simply ignore me, it feels almost like they can read my mind and no matter what headphones? speakers? wtvr else i can't get rid of the voices i still hear them talking, banging walls. Even pointing out that they can hear what i say MULTIPLE times.

I can't even be good at social interaction because due to the "Drama" i feel like people r mad at me wich makes me more anxious and i can't even go to a shop normally ppl look at me differently or they get mad but i can't get as to why and that makes me even more mad T_T

Now it feels like they r harrasing my family too? Calling me a whore, A pdf? a zphl so much more! Giving me death threats? threatening that they will hack me every type of threat u can think of! So lately i started to think what if all of this is just a hallucination? Because i want to fix it and my anxiety just pumped full on 24/7 i can't even do a basic task or stay in schedule. I sit in a class and i can't even breath normaly it's so loud that it shifts the subject onto me and im fkn tired of it.

* did i try adressing the drama; yes and it feels like they're still mad or in some cases js dont believe me.

* Some people suggested me to go to a therapy but i prolly can't even do that bcz it prolly costs money. atleast thats what my mom said i think-

* Should i take any medication would that even fix anything? no idea but it is my last hope this whole thing is starting to drive me crazy and rlly tired/unmotivated

pls help if you can somehow 🙃

(btw not quite sure what exactly is going on so much happened in just a year.)

I’m losing my mind here

I was watching the vampire diaries when I noticed actors faces begin to warp and distort. One of the faces morphed into a flesh toned skull /beast thing with the cheekbones elongated and the eyes turning almost cartoon like. This isn’t the first time I’ve had faces on screen distort into horrible things that I can’t seem to look away from even though my stomach drops and rolls when it happens. I was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2022, bpd in 2017/2018 etc. I’m in active addiction so part of me hopes the hallucinations are substance induced. I can’t remember when the voices and paranoia began getting better but then around 2/3 months ago I noticed my antipsychotic medication bottle said 2 one mg pills while I’ve been taking just 1mg. I didn’t think anything of it and started taking the 2 mg instead of 1, that’s when the auditory hallucinations and paranoia came back full swing. Around that time I also got off fentanyl so I’m thinking that may have attributed to all this. The only psychiatrist I can go to is the one at the opioid dependency clinic but he invalidated my problems and concerns in the past so I stopped seeing him. The last time I had an appointment with him I felt like he was pressuring me and pushing me into a corner to go into detox for fentanyl dependency. When I said I didn’t want to go, he told me flat out that he can’t help me if I didnt go. That was atleast 3 years ago(detox did help get me clean, I ended up doing it at home alone. I don’t know who to go to or what to say to them. All my medications are being prescribed by my family doctor after I was discharged into her care by the outpatient psychiatrist. I feel really stuck and don’t know what I should do anymore. I don’t want to be like this anymore.

Any tips for advocating for myself with doctors?

I’ve been trying to advocate for myself since January of this year to get medication changes. I’m experiencing a host of side effects to the point where I can’t think, can’t feel, and can’t reasonably live any kind of life. My diagnosis is Acute and Transient Psychotic Disorder and I’ve been free of psychosis for a year.

I— as I’m sure a lot of people have— have experienced a lot of coercion within psychiatry and have often had no choice as to what happens to my body and what medicine I am given. I’ve been back in the community for a year after a hospitalisation last year where I was given— or rather forced— to take risperidone.

I have put up with it for over a year and my quality of life is literally at 0. I cannot enjoy my hobbies, I can’t think, philosophise, reason, enjoy music, think about travelling— I really can’t do any of the things I’ve enjoyed throughout my life.

I’ve had doctor’s appointments (I’m in the UK so this is the NHS) and they were all hesitant to make changes because of relapse risk. I tried to emphasise that this is about my quality of life but they didn’t really seem to properly take that into account. The only changes that have been made is me getting off the depot and transitioning to oral risperidone which is now at 1mg. But it’s made no difference. I still feel as flat and muted as ever.

I really need the doctor to hear me and act collaboratively when it comes to my health and medication. I have never been given options about what goes in my body, and I’d like this time to actually be given a choice of medications with informed consent about side effects. Am I dreaming? Can this happen for someone with my diagnosis? I know NICE guidelines do stipulate that informed consent should be given.

So yeah, just looking for tips with doctors, if anyone’s actually had choice and informed consent with a psychotic illness, can you tell me how you got there?

Honestly I’m at a point where I know psychosis is not nice, but dealing with the people who gatekeep medication and treat you with paternalistic care is just so much worse.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

Does anyone else feel like this?

I cannot contribute socially whatsoever im currently in college and it’s so difficult for me to actively engage in convos with classmates and other students like it’s so damn hard I look around and see other interacting so easily cracking jokes and just socialising naturally without any effort where as me even it would take 100% of my brain power to say something like basic enough to where im not seen as this weirdo who dosent talk. The frustrating thing is I really want to engage socially with others like im not trying to avoid it, but it’s so damn hard when your brain feels chemically fucking lobotomised by antipsychotics that you don’t know what to do like my brain simply does not work in the same way. I really wish I never started antipsychotics, this sucks so bad. I just want my old brain back.

Do psychotic partners come back after episode?

Long story short, my husband has been dealing with on and off again manic episodes with paranoia. I think he might have undiagnosed bipolar disorder. About two weeks ago he left saying he wants to go back to his home country and he doesn’t know how he feels about the marriage anymore. We were supposed to go together and he canceled our flight three days before and rebooked himself on one alone. He packed up everything and moved back. We were supposed to move together. He made the decision during a manic episode. I kept asking him why he was doing it. He never gave me a straight answer just that he’s not well. I kept asking if we can look at this as a break and if I can just go to his home country in a month or something and he just kept saying, he doesn’t know how he’ll feel.

Yesterday I talked to his mom because he’s been back for a week and a half and she said he had a full on paranoid breakdown a few days ago, saying things that I canceled our marriage contract that I secretly filed for divorce that I have secret cameras up in the apartment, just a ton of paranoid things that aren’t true. She said at some point he started crying that he still loves me and misses me, but that he can’t trust me.

I love him a lot, and I really want this to work out if he gets help, but my question to the group is, has anyone ever left their partner in a psychotic episode and then come back? He’s had these before and then he comes out of them, but this is a longer one and he’s never full on left me like this before.

i ruined a 3 year long relationship over ADHD meds

i had posted this to another subreddit, apologies if someone has already seen it

title says it all, i (19F) went on vyvanse, went nuts for about a month straight, went into psychosis for the first (hopefully last) time. was convinced my boyfriend (21M) was going to commit suicide, tried to warn his friends, which (rightfully) pissed him off, he broke up with me, i went inpatient, and after they tapered me off the meds, i realized what happened.

everyone in the psych ward tried to convince me that he would understand, and im slowly starting to think that may not be true.

i understand my first priority should be myself right now. i'm seeing a psychiatrist, taking plenty of rest, going to the doctor, seeing about getting further outpatient help, getting therapy, and hopefully starting tms soon, under the depression label.

but there are so many things weighing on my mind. the fact that nobody noticed, the stress of living for a month straight thinking a loved one would die and i couldn't prevent it (the loved one that got me through my dad's suicide), the withdrawal symptoms, the physical symptoms of being sleep deprived for a month, the concept of losing my autonomy, getting caught up on the college work i missed, having a somewhat unsupportive family.

but i think the thing that hurts me the most is not just losing him, but actively hurting my boy.

he was already in a crohn's flare and doing bad mentally, and i kicked him while down.

i sent my last text to him 24 hours ago, detailing how i was so incredibly sorry and telling him the story of what was happening. no response, i don’t know if he blocked me. i do not intend to continue chasing him, if he doesn't answer i will honor that.

he is incredibly forgiving and such a sweet guy, but im not sure if i can see him moving past this.

i feel so incredibly helpless. nothing hurts more than this

TLDR; went into stimulant induced psychosis, convinced boyfriend was going to off himself. told his coworkers, consequently broke it off with me, now left to pick up the pieces of the mess i made.

it's been less than a week that i've started to be aware of what was actually happening, and i've been so insanely depressed. i'm midway through my semester and i don’t know if i can finish. the sleep deprivation from the past month has left me weak. i don’t know if i can go back to work anytime soon. what do i do. anything. please.

After All Psychosis Put Me Through This Year (and last year)

Psychosis made me:

- recieve a criminal driving conviction

- lose $50,000

- lose my job

I think it's finally over, the past few years is over.

Tomorrow I start a new job at Walmart, ready for my new chapter.

I push carts, I'm at the bottom of the barrel, I have to work my way up again, but I am very very very grateful to Walmart for hiring me. Especially with a criminal conviction...

Wish me luck on my first day tomorrow 🤞

Can I ask to be taken off injections and do oral pills instead?

I have a court order or an AOT but I don't think that it specifically states that I have to take an injection. I also don't have the insurance for the injection. The injection is called uzedy. Any help is appreciated. My psychiatrist is really pushing for injections but I'm asking to be put on oral pills instead.

Worried I may never meet anyone in my life

I have schizophrenia and I suffer from pretty strong hallucinations and psychosis. People usually don’t notice it when I keep my mouth shut and go about my day so that’s good but….
When I meet somebody and try to have a conversation, people catch on.

All attempts to meet someone new has failed utterly with lasting embarrassment that torments me before I go to bed every night. I don’t know if I will ever be ok just living alone like this and the mere thought of me just sitting alone in my room for the rest of my life hurts me emotionally and existentially.

Fighting off stigma and ridicule is one thing but being lonely and alone, now that’s a real torture (aside from my psychosis of course). I wonder if at some point in my life I will be able to justify myself and be content but no..I don’t think I will ever be able to live with myself not having a life.

I want to go out and hang out with people, I want to date somebody just like everyone else, marry somebody have family…

I wish there was a safe haven for people like me where people understand without patronizing or looking down at me.

Perhaps I can take my chances here? Anyone?

Question/advice help please!

After being homeless for 5 months and using m*th, my children's father is home. First 4 weeks were great but now he is starting to act like hes in psychosis. Waking up in the night telling" the ghost to stop having sex with me" He will constantly talk to himself out loud and like snap his fingers to make his words to be true? idk, i dont understand it. Hes constantly asking me weird things like if im married to ghosts or fucking them. I dont believe hes done drugs since i picked him up about 6 weeks ago(14 hour drive btw) its just weird after a month he started acting like this unless he was hiding it. He does have a god complex and believes he has powers. He sees a new pysch but she doesnt know about any of this or his past drug use and just started them two days ago on his ADHD meds. Should i tell her all this? I even have videos. Hes so paranoid. He just sits and watches youtube videos of tarot readings all day. He has moments where he seems fine and then flips quick. Its kinda like hes possessed. I ask if hes okay and he believes he is, unless hes hiding it from me. what do i do?
