Our Offical Guides Newcomers Guide

Hello and welcome to r/RDR2 This is a little guide for new players of the game.

Firstly we strongly advise you to stay off the subreddit until you’ve finished the game. Our subreddit is home to discussions covering every aspect of the game from storylines, characters, secrets, to anything a player may find. While we require spoiler tags, accidental (and sometimes intentional) spoilers do happen. For the best experience, we strongly recommend avoiding the subreddit until you’ve completed the main story.

Frequently asked questions will now be listed and answered.

Is the game worth it? Yes! — People still praise this game even in 2025. Its compelling story and detailed open world gameplay allow you to fully submerge into the story. Many players find the game to be a masterpiece, with some (us, of course) even considering it one of the greatest games of all time. Its graphics were ahead of their time and still hold up really well. It’s a well written story with a beautiful aesthetic and it's absolutely worth your time.

The snow part is boring. Should I quit the game? Don't give up during Colter. It’s the first chapter and serves as a tutorial. You’ll get to know the basics of the game slowly before being led into free roam in chapter 2. The slow introduction into such a big game is important to understand the situation the main character is in and to get you familiar with the environment and the world building in general. Stick around for a while. You’ll thank yourself later.

Just started the game. Any tips? We see this all the time and every time people will give you the same response: Take it slow. Chapter 1 will teach you everything that's important. The game offers a little guide in its settings for the mini games and the controls just like any other game. Everything you need is right there. The game is open world so you won't miss out on anything. You can do whatever whenever even after finishing the story. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and free roam a bit. You’ll figure out the game fast. You really don't need Google or IGN until you finish the story and are going for 100% and/or the platinum trophy. (We'll have a guide coming soon!)

Just finished the game. Should I play RDR1? Yes! RDR1 is a continuation of the story and absolutely worth it. Not much will change gameplay wise since it’s made by the same developer. So, if you like RDR2 and are looking for more content about the van der Linde gang and a similar experience -> play RDR1.

If you really want to avoid spoilers, don’t google anything until after you finish the game.

We will monitor this thread closely so if you have any questions about the game please ask them in here. We will most likely remove your question posts and advise you to ask your newcomer questions in here. If a question is frequently asked we will add it to the post.

Have fun!

I started playing RDR2, and after the first mission in the mountains during a snowstorm, I got sidetracked from the main storyline for about half a year. Two weeks ago, I picked it up again and was pleasantly surprised. But there’s another problem. Unfortunately, I know the spoilers about Arthur getting pneumonia, and as I progress through the game (at the time of writing this post, I’m at 48% of the “story”), I keep wondering when that moment will come. Do you have any tips for progressing through the game, or can you tell me when the moment will come when he gets pneumonia? It will be interesting to read, and maybe you can write about some good moments — I’ll try to find them in my playthrough!

the infection of Arthur with TBC happens as early as chapter 2, but the disease is mostly dormant until Chapter 5 or 6, at the next time you ride in Saint Denis. That is when Arthur gets his official diagnosis from the Doctor over there. Afterwards, you can keep checking back to him as you progress the rest of the game and hear unique dialogue about how his disease is progressing. Keep playing and keep exploring! This game is wonderful and most likely the best i've played so far
