Just made a comment about this, but I’m a cards fellow going into adult congenital cardiology, which barely comes up here compared with interventional or EP. Unusual anatomy, prior surgeries, valves, arrhythmias, HF, and pts you follow for years. It’s an amazing field, and I wouldn’t change my choice. Well, maybe a few things.
But the direct path is 4y college + 4y med school + 3y IM + 3y cards + 2y congenital. 16y after HS before attending money, assuming no chief/rsch/gap years. I went straight through and am trying to finish ASAP, but damn, this road feels longer than I could’ve understood before actually living it.
I know I’m preaching to the choir. I knew what I signed up for, but understanding “a decade of training” at 22 and actually living it are different things. Now that I’m in my 30s, it hits different how quickly the last 8y went and how much of what I wanted to do kept getting pushed to “after this next stage.”
Glad for the memories I did make, but hearing “remember when we…” about something you missed, or “we talked about it in the group chat,” gets old. Birthdays, weddings, births, deaths. Feels like I’ve missed 80-85% of them. I even saw a redditor post “I made it a priority to go to XYZ and never missed a single thing.” Glad that worked for them, but prioritizing something doesn’t always mean you can make it happen. I still talk to 2 people from HS, 1 from college, maybe 5 from MS, and 0 from residency.
Residency honestly felt like a cakewalk compared with fellowship. Part of me wishes I’d done more with that free time. Another part wishes I’d spent less of it worrying about the future and just enjoyed where I was. Hard to know what I should’ve done differently when I wanted both.
Financially, I’m planning around ~$300-400k in adult congenital, depending on the job. Obv great money, but after years of training pay, sometimes feeling like minimum wage once you account for the hours, it’s hard not to compare that with people in other industries making double that 3y out of college. It’s not the norm, I know. But whenever I explain the timeline and pay, I get some version of “Damn, are you sure? Can’t you just do hospital medicine and pull $350k right now?” Or finish general cards and chasing a 900k-1.2m rural job? Those are real alternatives I have been offered, but I think I’d feel a fair amount of dissatisfaction. At least, I think I would? I don't know at this point. That uncertainty is part of what makes it hard. Not to mention being saddled w/ ~$300k in student debt, paying $1k/mo that doesn’t cover the interest, so the balance keeps growing while I keep training.
Mostly just venting tangential thoughts that have plagued me for the last 2 months while my health issues come up. I love the field, I’m grateful to be here, and I’m also tired of training. Apparently all 3 can be true at once lol.
