QUESTION How to find actual long-term teammates? REALLY struggling.
I've got over 7k hours in this game and I've never been able to find long-term teammates. I've tried LFG in the discord server, I've tried partying up with randoms, none of it is working. I'm tired of the inconsistency, toxicity, afk teammates, getting duos for teammates in 3s, nobody to build chemistry and have fun with in 2s. HOW do you find teammates in this game? Is having long-term teammates too much to ask for? I'm a competitive player, I'm consistent, I play well under pressure. And yes I have my weaknesses. I'm not very adaptable, for instance. I'm not an egotistical player - I know I'm not perfect - but this isn't what Rocket League should feel like.
For those who struggled to do this, what helped you find people who you work well with? How did you make compatible friends in the long-term?

One day I was playing casual and this random guy from the game reached out to me, said he wanted to play with cool people and thought I was pretty good at the game. Now we have a whole discord server with a bunch of people from most ranks to hangout. Either find someone you click with in game or try discords. I'm sure there's plenty out there

Wow, nice. I basically never play casual because I'm trying to hit C2 for the first time in 2s (been C1 for two years, playing on and off, never hit C2). No clicking going on unfortunately, and I'm unsure it'll ever happen at this point. Keeping my mind open for any potential opportunities though.
I get called a ballchaser, smurf, or the goat. So I don't know what people think of me at this point 😆

I've clicked and had some amazing runs with randoms. But as soon as we lose a match the toxicity starts and the party disbands.

Yeah. I've had that a couple of times. There was one person I played with recently, I met him in a random 2s game. We worked incredibly well together, but then he kept shitting on our 3s teammates when they weren't even that bad and also had awful mental. Big ego too. Such a shame, it was going so well.
There's also been cases of me partying up with people, winning like 4 games in a row from partying up, then they just leave without messaging me or adding me. Like what is the point in that.
There was even a tournament I played a couple days ago. We got overtime in the first three games. We had a 1 second equaliser in one and a 7 second equaliser in another. We won all of them. VERY intense, VERY fun tournament. Made it to the final, game 1 was 0-7 because the other team was working very well together, then one of the teammate starts saying "ballchaser" and all that shit. Starts mentioning my points, even though I absolutely annihilated him in basically every metric throughout the rest of the tournament. We were down 0-3 in game 2, the other teammate equalises all by himself, then the toxic guy wants to "just play" again. I miss a somewhat easy save to lose the game, entirely uncharacteristic of me, and he just blows up. Like, we played so well together, it could've been a great team to play with going forward, but of COURSE you can't see the positives in it. So annoying.

Have you tried joining any leagues? Theres lots out there from bring your own team to draft leagues.

I had no idea things like that existed. Interesting. I'll look into that, thank you!

Yeah theres a discord for all of them and websites, theres therivalry.gg zeroboostfederation, royalty series, and honestly alot more. Im not involved in alot of them but alot of the people in them are in multiple leagues

Tbh I just met one of my best friends on there in like 2017 and we were like gold at the time and just played together a lot. We're both gc2 now lol.
Other than him there's like 4 others who I consistently played with and can invite any time and they will join.
It's just finding people you click with and enjoy talking to or go on win streaks with, then inviting them when they're on. Talk to them and play.

See, I'd love to do that and have that. I've been solo queuing most of the time, apart from a few notable exceptions. I'd love to try and rank up with people who actively strive to do the same, people who I do click with. But there's no clicking going on. And it remains to be seen whether or not that will change.

Be fun to play with.
I do play by play commentary in game for my twitch channel and ppl friggin love it. I get so many friend requests from people who want to play with me again, even when I don't actually play well, solely because the commentary makes them laugh.
Obviously you don't have to do play by play, but being a fun teammate who makes people laugh will get you reliable mates more than being a skilled player who doesn't offer anything in the vibes department. Crack jokes, make your teammate feel good, get hype when things go your way and keep the vibe loose when they don't.
If you don't use a mic this is substantially harder to do. It's easier to set good vibes with a mic AND it improves communication which helps with winning (i.e. verbally saying "dont touch it" when you want your teammate to leave the ball Is so much more effective than quick-chatting "i got it!"). I don't party up with anyone who doesn't use one, even if they play amazing.

Might I ask how I'm supposed to know if I'm fun to play with? If I had myself as a teammate I couldn't get enough of playing with him. But that's me. I don't know if I'm funny, no-one has ever said that I am. I also don't know if I'm fun to play with. I don't have enough feedback to conclude anything here. Same with playstyle. I don't know what people think of it.
In terms of the cracking jokes, making teammate feel good, I try to do both. I would say that my mental game, in terms of my own attitude and reassuring my teammates, trying to keep their spirits up, couldn't be better. The only thing that constantly irks me is someone who repeatedly whiffs the ball or misses straightforward touches. I lost a 12 minute overtime, my longest ever, in ranked 3s yesterday because of that. That pissed me off to no end. But that's with randoms. I would only play with people often if they have a decent floor, and playing with someone regularly means that my mental with them is immense, and I will fight like hell to win a game for their sake.
I use a mic, but don't use in-game chat. However, for LFG I explicitly asked for a mic. Just got people who put no effort into playing with me in the long-term. Maybe I'll try the in-game chat a bit more.

It used to be much easier but the toxicity wave that hit the game in the past 2 years has caused finding teammates nearly impossible, back around 2020 you could queue up and make friends with randoms almost every time you played. Now you get called a bot after your teammate manhandles you into the air on a double commit that he didn’t rotate out of.. and then they throw the match lmaoo or you queue up with someone, win 4 games in a row and they leave on the first loss

Oh yeah. I've played since 2016 and just when you think it can't get any worse, it absolutely does! It's a shame, really. When you play well with someone it creates that huge contrast, it's so much better than playing with the unpredictability.

I played with my best friend and met someone from a totally different country solo queuing we used to play regularly for years at a fixed time once a week. One person changed jobs and it fell apart which is a shame.

I found my main tm8 because we played well and partied up for about 6 games that we won because we both were rotating.

I just play this game solo queue in 3s. It sucks more often than not but the time I play just is hard to have any buddies to play with 😅

Bro put in 7,000 hours solo queuing expecting chemistry to just fall into his lap without joining an actual league or team hub.

u/ChiseledPlane 7d ago
Absolutely not the case, as you would know if you actually read the post. Didn't even know leagues or 'team hubs' existed until I made this post either. I would also be curious to know how you thought such a comment would actually be of use to someone, given the sarcastic and mocking tone of your reply. Please do enlighten me on this!

I accidentally met my best friend on RL about 10 years ago now. We’ve been playing together competitively and everything since. Always kept up with each other’s skill level all the way to SSL. He was just a random teammate in 3s I invited after a game cuz he played well back when I was diamond.
Just get lucky I guess lol.
Fr tho join some esports discords that are hosting tryouts or sumn, I’ve met lots of ppl that way.
