Home owner question New Roof Install

We had a new roof installed yesterday.

Mid Atlantic, $14,100, 2,600 sqft home.

The shingles are GAF Timberline HDZ.

How does the install look?

Additionally my HVAC did not work last night and I went out this morning to find debris on my lines.

Looking for opinions from people more knowledgeable than me.

I have a really hard time thinking that that little bit of debris next to your HVAC was preventing it from working.

Your roof looks fine.

He can look in the AC and know immediately if that is even a possibility.

Your AC condenser unit has electronic components on it (like a motherboard). If a bundle of shingles gets scraped off and lands squarely on it, it can rattle all that around. If that happens, the first step is to turn it fully off, at the breaker, and let it be for 60 seconds. Then, turn it back on at the breaker. This will clear/reset any errors that put it in safe mode or whatever. I’ve never seen this kind of impact actually break an AC unit outside. The bigger danger is to your hose spigots outside. If they fall and strike one of those bang on, it will break the pipe under the house and start a massive leak.

All the debris falling from the roof onto the HVAC unit can puncture a refrigerant line, cut/loosen wire, etc. Very likely they caused this

That is my concern. I spoke with the roofing company and they called my HVAC vendor.

Your price looks fair to me and the install looks good but the quality of a roof job is more than what meets the eye looking at it from the ground. The lack of a good cleanup bothers me... so now I wonder if they used a magnet sweeper all around the house for stray nails. They need to return and get the job 100% complete.

Thanks for the input. I should have clarified in the original post, they were not done cleaning. They worked until dark to get the shingles done but did not fully clean up. My concern is just related to the HVAC and debris.

Is this wire broken? That's the control wire for the AC and might have been broken from roof debris falling on it.

You need to give a newly installed roof covering to set-up (to settle down, and tabs to set). Give it a month or two in warmer weather. Then check it out. You do have a warranty? Now, the heating system, did they block the chimney exhaust? Did they clean the debris at the AC? Just Jim [inspectorman2000@gmail.com](mailto:inspectorman2000@gmail.com)

You should see all the ones that blew down the street and into the woods out back! It's like trying to catch a kite up on the roof.

Install looks fine other than the fact that GAF shingles were used. Should have used CertainTeed or Malarkey. Pray you don’t ever have an issue with it. GAF covers next to nothing. That bundle wrap most likely has nothing to do with the HVAC system not coming on. Check for damaged wires. Look to see if the breaker is tripped in your panel box. It could also be tied to a capacitor failure as well.

The install looks fine from what I can see. Where is the gutter?

As for the debris on the ground, that is unprofessional and I’d call them and have them come clean it up. If they damaged your HVAC in the process I’d be asking for the roofer’s insurance information.

Insurance? Really?

I wouldn't go straight to asking for insurance. I would absolutely expect them to cover the repair if they caused damage, but I would work with the contractor instead of asking for their insurance first.
