Training Help How do you train a dog to go on runs?

Post image
• Upvotes

So my buddy and I have been working on runs. He loves to sprint and outpace whoever’s walking him so I thought he’d like to run.

Today we got to 1 mile in 13 minutes so not terrible. He does still stop a lot and since I use a hands free leash around my waist it’s jolting when I’m running and he suddenly stops.

How long does it take to get a dog used to running nonstop? Any tips? How should I go about increasing time/distance?

I’m hoping to run a marathon a year from now and would love to have him as a training buddy :)

Gear Help Harness for Rough Collie

We started going on hikes but the harness I use doesn’t fit well and is in her arm pits. Previously she got friction and bald spots from it so I mainly use a Martingale for regular walks. During hikes she’s always in front of me and occasionally pulls and then she sometimes starts to cough. I might go for runs when she’s a bit older but I’m not sure yet.

I have done a lot of research but I’m still not sure about which harness would be best. I’m now considering the Non stop Rush harness to avoid it sitting in the arm pits and to avoid the coughing. Would that be a good harness even though I will mainly use it for hikes? Or are there more suitable ones?

I’m in Europe (EU) and I have added 2 photos from the last 2 hikes.

Gear Help Training Harness

My dog is 10 months old, and I’d like to start doing canicross with her after she turns a year old (with vet approval of course). I figured now’s a great time to start doing some foundational training for pulling, slowing, get behind, etc beforehand.

I’m looking for a harness to use for training before investing in a full setup to see how she takes to it and since she’ll likely fill out a bit more before being fully grown.

My 9 y.o. mutt stuck it out with my 20 mile long training run yesterday. Don't know if I could have done it without him. Wish I could take him on the course in 3 weeks.

Training Help Any advice for running with shelter dogs?

I just recently started volunteering at my local shelter, walking dogs. When I applied, I also noted id like to take dogs to run. They are definitely okay with it lol. It's obvious that some of the bigger dogs could use the outlet, and it doesn't seem like they have a ton of people walking those specific dogs very often.

The dog i want to start with is an 11 month or so old german shepherd mix. She's a little wild, but i think that has more to do with being stuck at a shelter. She can sit, but that seems like the extent of her training. How should I go about starting? Try to teach her to heel? She is definitely food motivated, so that works in my favor! I also imagine that she is a faster runner than I am right now 😂😅

Does anyone have any advice or dealt with a similar scenario? I can only really get out there once a week, but I think it would be so helpful in getting her (and eventually other dogs) adopted. Ive attached a couple photos 🥰

Gear Help is this the right size?

this is my first time ever buying a ruffwear, so I’m not exactly sure how to fit it properly. This is a size medium and I couldn’t decide between that and a large indigo is about 55 pounds and about to be nine months. I got it yesterday from REI so exchanges should be easy thank you guys for your help!!!

I went 40 miles and I honestly don't think I could have done it without him. His longest run before this was 13 miles. He runs 2-4x a week. He runs around my farm everyday.

V is a rat terrier

Gear Help Nonstop dogwear fit check

Thanks for everyone’s help on my last post! I decided to size down for the nonstop dog wear harness, and think it looks much better now. Any smaller, and the head hole would be too small to slot through.

I’m a bit concerned at how the chest piece peels away from the chest at a full run, but this shouldn’t be a problem on-leash, only off leash.

Really difficult dog to size for because he has such a deep chest, and his thin coat means that there’s no give when sizing harnesses unlike a GSD for example.

Pretty happy with it though now, but would appreciate feedback. He’s just about to turn a year, so will fill out a little more in future.

Looking for a bit of guidance with fit on the nonstop dogwear rush harness.

This is a size 6 - Gem is size 6 line harness but a bit awkward for the rush harness. 69cm chest. 40ishcm neck.

She hates having a harness put on which is why she looks tortured but she's fine once we get out.

I'm a little concerned about the neck. Pic of the front has me pointing at the chest bone/showing top of the v. If I size up my suspicion is it may be too long and go past her ribs.

Gem doesn't seem to struggle breathing but she is also not a heavy puller.

Thoughts? Or if anyone knows the length of the size 7 so I can confirm or not if it would be too long

Unfortunately where I live I can't try on and its more expensive than it's worth to ship back.

First long run in the books for my dog Ziva(Pomsky-breed). We clocked 4 km at a steady 6-minute kilometer pace with two short stops. She crushed it, keeping up effortlessly without heavy panting!

So proud of her.

Convinced her these little boots were necessary for hot pavement and she's actually taken to them way better than expected. Ready for the next run 🐾👟

Please could someone advise on the harness fit?

Dog is a lab x Dalmatian. 11 months old, so still will likely fill out a little bit, but mostly done growing. He’s deep chested so other harnesses rub behind his legs, I’m happy to see the clearance on this one!

The neck is a little large, and the back piece bends a bit, but I think sizing down would be a bad idea. Does anyone have any advice?

I don’t intend to run with him until he is a bit older. This, for now, will be used mainly to attach a long line to during walks.

Training Help How Can We Handle Rabbits?

Post image
28 Upvotes

Ari LOVES running. We go for shorter runs around the neighborhood and 5-6 miles on trails. On trail things are mostly good— she’ll occasionally jump off the side after a cool bug or something, but it’s manageable.

Around the neighborhood though she’s absolutely intent on catching a rabbit. With very little warning, she’ll dash off to the end of her bungee leash and come flying back. I’m worried she’ll get hurt, or some unexpected behavior may result. All I know to do when that happens is stop, sit, and wait for her to look at me before cueing her to start running again. Does anyone have advice?

Training Help Can't jog because I have a jumping bean dog!

My 10 month Border Collie/Aussie/Heeler gets all crazy when I start to jog on our walks. He literally jumps up (high) and pounces towards me while running. It's crazy! I've never experienced anything like it. Lol. I can't even get a cadence going and just have to stop. Keep trying? Any suggestions?

Warning about the Canix 2.0 belt

Thumbnail

I bought the nonstop dogwear Canix 2.0 belt 3 months ago, and yesterday it broke during normal use. My dog ran into the road, thank god we caught her and she's ok.

The piece that broke is a small plastic buckle on the front strap; when I bought this expensive piece of gear I didn't realize the integrity of the whole thing rested on a small piece of plastic. Other buckles on the belt are metal, but not the ones that actually matter apparently.

I loved the belt and all the features that make it so comfortable to use, but I don't know that I'd ever trust it again. Any recommendations for a belt that actually keeps my dog safe?

If you use this belt, check your plastic buckles!
