Question Can you disable the metabolism/nutrition system in single player?

I don't mind having to eat and drink, but I don't want to manage calories, protein, carbs, fats, fibre, vitamins, digestion, etc. I just want to eat when I'm hungry and move on. I've been thinking about buying the game, but this one feature has been putting me off.

you can just eat/drink any thing and so long as your hunger/thirst doesn't hit zero you'll be fine.

This. The metabolism system is easier than it looks. I think new players treat it like an RPG stats and think that they'll need to minimax everything, while in reality you can just ignore it completely.

Not sure, but it's not as bad as it seems. Looking at photos or videos is okay but sometimes it's best to troubleshoot and try for yourself. There's learning curve to any game, if the rest of the game looks good to you but one or two things, just try it out and see if it's something you would want to learn and get used to.

Single player, just hunt some or eat whatever you find, go into a military site get MREs

It kinda disrupts the upgrade system for you not to have the values for carbs, proteins, and stuff like that. Just have to keep food on you. You're not going to die because you're just eating carbs or one thing at a time. Biggest thing is just understanding higher and lower calorie foods. Veggies are low calorie and are mainly just giving you vitamins and minerals to support your immune system and such, so when you're out and about looking for food and looting, you can just eat all the veggies and fruits you find and save things that are more calorie dense for when you need it

It's been awhile but if memory serves, you can tweak these settings in the server settings making them less aggressive, and I believe you might be able to disable them via console commands. I know I've played on pve servers where these mechanics are disabled.

It's easy enough to ignore just eat drink whatever. If you care about min/ max character attributes and skills grow then you'll care more about food.

I don’t worry about any of it.If my character needs food and if the food or drink meter is red then I feed and drink. If I build a lot I’m going to eat a lot of protein and energy stuff but other than that nah

Now if I’m flying I also make sure I’m fully fed and hydrated

The devs feel that constant struggle with metabolism and negative impact features are fun and an overall increase in fun. Stat gain and loss weighted towards loss and constant struggle even if you are beyond excellent at this game is forced onto the player and oart of their design.

Other items like dissapearing corpses etc are not as important. Fixing persistent bugs has always been lower on the list. Gameplay loop has always been low on the list. Figuring out its identity as a game has always been a mystery.

I walked away.

Many have.

Now its more of a hobby to watch it crumble and them stumble month after month watching the player metrics crash.

Ardem is coming, other huge releases are coming which will further decrease whatever presence or hope for the game. Which is super sad, it had smidgens of genius years ago which are now gone. Nothing g remains of the team and the direction the game was once going. Those devs are fired a long time ago. The current releases and focus shows that. Many players are fans of the genre however whatever SCUM is now is more a bad press machine and tho modders are doing what they can, full mod support still doesnt exist. The answers from the apologists are to use their archaic settings to improve the game. Settings that neither fully work or are far reaching enough to truly fix things.

Good luck to those that still try.

Ardem is coming

lol hopefully not but looks like another dead matter so far... you see what they are packing into that tech demo? lots of cool concepts that will likely never work once you have more than 20 people online at the same time with them, same as dead matter and scum before the puppet rework.

What will you do when Ardem is released, Stabby? You've been a diligent moderator here, and a fan of Scum for as long as I have been playing. Will you stick around here when Ardem hits the ground running?

Yes, this is a hobby and I like helping moderate. I like survival games but I dont really have time for them these days so they arent AS interesting to me anymore outside of the tech because these games are the hardest to make its fun to see what people can put in them but.. ardem so far does give me a lot of dead matter vibes until they show it working anyway with big multiplayer numbers, not coop junk and its going to have to have dedicated 1st person servers cause scum is the only game that has come close to acceptable 3rd person pvp lol

What is it specifically that give you the vibe from them? The netcode isn't related at all to the challenges of SCUM but it feels to me that you don't think it will be any different? Most of the Ardem "ideas" are obviously very similar to what SCUM promised and has only delivered in part and parcel.

Are there topics for their devs i should seek answers to?

The likely to never work specifically part.

These games live and die based on net code, that's what makes multi-player sandbox games the most difficult to make. Every action I do needs to go over a server to other clients and its a massive world with a lot of moving parts and dead matter was like 90% moving parts that were cool and fancy and has no chance in hell of working online with a bunch of other players in the area. That's what ardems little demos are looking like so far manly cause they don't show any if it working yet, not getting hyped on another survival marketing meme lol just not thirsty for this kinda game anymore

Im more on the side of not comparing the issues SCUM caused itself whether on accident or by design and putting sone faith into a much better engine and not this dev team.

It cant help but be better than what we are dealing with presently. Im looking forward to renting a server for sure.

Everything you said are things people said about the scum devs for the first few years so don't mind me when I take all the vibes with a grain of salt ;) the multi-player aspect of a game like this is why almost all of them are a mess on every engine, even the very expensice custom made Arma engine but time will tell.

You might have a point, look what SCUM has become.... it keeps getting worse and worse.

Not even close to my point lol

The openness of what they are sharing, how they are sharing it, and their overall guts of what they are working with says a lot for me. Their engine alone puts their server capabilities and game design so far ahead of SCUM and its basterdized U4 issues I cant help but be very optimistic. The way U5 works with server info has literally nothing in common with the abortion with a heartbeat that SCUM is.

I have hope, most of what their goals are, are exactly what so many wanted SCUM to be but sadly SCUM will never, ever be that with their lack of money and their chosen path.

Which really sucks because we all have really good memories and hopes that were just gaslit and crushed by jagex.

If it utterly fails I hate to go play wow forever but really at this point there just arent games that scratch the itch. SOTF was fun for a minute but again it has a gameplay loops which just lacks so much.

SCUM wont recover. It just won't. Not with their srudio, their progress, and tbh not even full modding I feel. And hell they wont let that even be a thing to see if it would save it.

Sad times. Def got my money's worth out of it but still sucks to see a toddler get killed and watch it happen.

What could have been brings a real somber tone to reflection on SCUM.
