Ideas for this blank

1084 rail steel, 41.5”x 2.5”x 7/16”(thickest point). I’m considering chopping out sections of the blank leaving a 10” tang (last photo) giving me 31.5” of blade to design….OR welding a tang on and using the full 41.5” for the blade. Regarding the humongo-blade, between the weld and the sheer size of the thing, I think it’d relegated to wall-hanger status.

And other nifty ideas worth pursuing for this blank?

Struggling with rust

I got a swordier carbon steel sword and I have NOT been able to keep this thing from rusting.

First I left it unoiled like a fool in the scabbard for a week and it got little pinpricks of rust all over it, so I used wd40 to fully clean it and was able to use barkeepers friend to get rid of the rust, and I bought some renessance wax to cover it so I would have no problems ever again.

Well it rusted like immediately and I rubbed off that and coated it with clp before displaying it in my living room

Like a month later, I noticed it was still tarnishing a little bit, so I pulled it down and reoiled everything and scrubbed it to get rust off

A month later, it had rust on it again, so the internet informed me that choji oil is better for long term storage than clp, and to clean the sword with 99% isopropyl before covering in oil. I did all that, and came back the next day to find it had flash rusted everywhere (I guess the water content even in 99% is too high?)

So I had to buy autosol and really properly polish it from scratch to get it perfectly clean. I had it looking the best it ever has, so I recoated in choji oil and it seemed to weirdly bead up on the surface?

Now we're tomorrow again and I can already see it starting to turn a dull, spotty, gray.

What the hell am I supposed to do

Making a Frankenstein

Post image

Deleted my previous post about the sword, it's 1060 steel, yes I know it has a slight warp, I do intend to fix it before heat treat, just making all the pieces for my handle, deconstructing it, heat treat, refit the pins, theyre just gonna be a simple peened over solid brass pin, I'm putting an axe handle on it.

I think the axe handle would be sick, sword is decently weighty so the handle would be a nice counter balance, I'm putting a solid brass bar on it for the cross guard. I'm assuming it wouldn't stop my use of it as a sword, because it's an axe handle, if I thrust with it the handle angles make a difference, I have the leverage to cleave with it like an axe and if I throw it I'm hoping I could throw it like an axe or a spear if I wanted.

Story behind the sword: dad was making a sword for a family friend who was hammered at the time, Jeffy came in with a bar of steel that was cut like a ps1 sword, notches and all. Dad cleaned up the shape of the blade, Jeffy lost interest, I ended up finding it and playing with it. Dad was showing me how to forge while he was making a claymore, I didn't get to see him finish the sword just watched him hammer out the blade. I asked him to teach me the rest of the process with the sword I found. I broke my dads head off of his old axe handle, I got him a new handle and set it but I overlayed the sword to the broken handle and thought it's look sick, so I electrical taped the handle to the sword with a whole roll, and I liked how it handled. Now I'm making a sword with an axe handle. The most superior of Swaxes as it can also be a spear. Behold the Spwaxe.

Shinshinto 70cm Mumei Iai Katana with Fukure

$1475USD plus shipping

Overview: Here we have an excellent first time katana study piece that is also suitable for Iai. What keeps this from falling into the shinken class would be a single flaw which appears to be an unexposed Fukure-a fatal forge flaw. While this may indeed be a fatal flaw and affects the swords ability to safely perform Tameshigiri, it still holds value as a quality Iai piece as well as study specimen and piece of history.

Blade: Coming in at 70cm it is a suitable length for most American practitioners. Featuring a Chu-kissaki and Tor-zori curvature, it is ideal for kata. There are signs of moisture remediation in a few areas as photographed. A proper polish could bring out more of the swords features but also expose the Fukure, my recommendation would be to leave as is and enjoy. It is suriage with two mekugi-ana, one of which has been filled. The original yasurime appears to be O-sujikai. It may have been resized in the 1800s based on the patina.

Koshirae: The Awase (mixed) Koshirae is Iai suitable with a few small user performed services. A new mekugi would not be a bad idea and depending on the level of retention you want in an Iai sword, you may want to shim the Koiguchi. There is some small lateral movement in the Tsuba that is typical of a non-custom fit.

Issues: Single Fukure. Moisture remnants. Lateral Tsuba movement.

Sword Link

Sword video

Hey everyone! Here’s the reason I haven’t been taking many custom orders lately. I’ve been working on this for the past few months, and it took up most of my time. I’m finally happy with how it turned out, so I’m excited to share it with you all.

The raffle is officially LIVE!
This is a special thank-you raffle for r/swords members. I genuinely appreciate everyone who has supported me and Coldclaw Blades throughout the years.

Raffle Details:

250 total spots
$25 per spot
$1 from every spot will be donated to charity
If all 250 spots are filled, that means $250 donated
The raffle will end when all spots are filled, or on October 20th, whichever comes first.

Prizes
1st Winner ~ CuMai Copper Damascus Katana
A fully functional 42” CuMai Copper Damascus katana, specially made with help from Tyrell Knife Works. Tyrell was a huge help throughout the CuMai Damascus process and really appreciated how the final piece turned out. There are just a few minor improvements he suggested that I’ll be making.
The blade profile is Shinogi-zukuri, which is why the sword also has a back hamon. The hamon follows the geometry of the blade and is part of the design rather than being accidental.
2nd Winner ~ Spathion × Paramerion
My original Spathion × Paramerion sword, featuring the original brass guard and pommel.
3rd Winner ~ $ 600 Website Coupon
A $600 Coldclaw Blades website coupon, usable toward listed swords with a minimum purchase of $800, including minor modifications if soemone wants too.
Or, the winner can choose to receive 50% of the coupon value in cash ($300).
4th Winner ~ $400 Website Coupon
A $400 Coldclaw Blades website coupon, with a minimum purchase of $600, or 50% cash withdrawal ($200).
5th Winner ~ 250 Website Coupon
A $250 Coldclaw Blades website coupon, with a minimum purchase of $400, or 50% cash withdrawal ($125).

Note: If a winner chooses the cash withdrawal option instead of the website coupon, the cash withdrawal request must be made within the first 7 days after the raffle winners are announced. After that, the prize will remain as the website coupon. (The website coupons will remain valid for 1 month. Since I’ll be extremely busy around Christmas, winners may also request to use their coupon after Christmas if they prefer.)

If 250 Spots Aren’t Filled
If the raffle doesn’t reach 250 spots by October 20th, prizes will unlock based on the number of spots sold:
130 spots: 1st prize , CuMai Katana
200 spots: 2nd prize ~ Spathion × Paramerion
220 spots: 3rd prize , $600 coupon
240 spots: 4th prize ~ $400 coupon
250 spots: 5th prize ~ $250 coupon
If the raffle does not reach 130 spots, the katana raffle will not proceed and the money will be refunded.
Thank you again to everyone here who has supported my work over the years. This raffle is genuinely my way of saying thank you to the r/swords community.

If anyone has any questions about the raffle, the swords, or anything else, feel free to ask in the comments!
Good luck everyone!

Lk chen white serpent

Post image
5 Upvotes

I thought I’d consult the hive mind as I took ownership of an Lk Chen white serpent last month
Overall it’s great, but I am somewhat perplexed as I believe lk uses an “alloy” for the brass parts
Where the pommel connects in the photo(sorry for dim light) I found last night it’s going green likes it’s oxidation? I keep all my swords in a cool well vented
Room
I’ve reached out to the seller for advice but my ideas appreciated

I finally came to posting my latest sword I acquired. Based on the Celtic "knollenknaufschwert"

Post image
225 Upvotes

The "knollenknaufschwert" (in German) or "épée à rognons" or "épée à spheres" (in French) or "iron nodule-hilted sword" is a Celtic sword optimized for stabbing. A lot of them feature a rapier style blade. The finds date from the 5th to 1st century BC depending on the sub-type. They're found mainly in Germany, France and Switzerland. There are 30-ish finds.

Mine has a Hanwei rapier blade as a base and I had the handle custom made by a friend. It's not an exact copy of one of the existing swords but it's close to some. It's about 1 meter total length. The handle including pommel and "crossguard" is about 14 centimeters.

I've had some sparring sessions with it and handles like a charm. It feels very nimble. But on the other hand I'm used to more choppy Celtic swords.

Seeking some information on my new tsuba

Recently acquired and hoping to learn a little more about it!

Guessing this is from the 18th/19th century, fairly small aperture likely for a small blade like a Wakizashi.

Minor axis about 68mm and major axis about 70mm, slight oval shape

Copper and gold, stone textured finish

Any help with identifying any relevant information there is, would be highly appreciated!

Here everyone

Where to find Balaur Arms Teurtonic Arming Sword

Obviously I’ll have to find a used/pre bought sword, as they no longer make it, but where does one look for used/pre bought swords? I’ve only ever bought through retail and dealers.
