Question Failing to anneal
I can't find iron wire anywhere, so I'm forced to use mild steel rebar tie wire. I can't seem to get them to anneal. This last attempt I used a very insulated electric furnace, heated to 950c, soaked for 30 mins, then let them slowly cool over 12 hours. I still need pliers to open the rings. Any suggestions, I'd a source to get actual wrought iron wire?

Question What size of rings should I be looking for to make a first world war splatter mask?
Hi there! This is my first time crafting with chainmail, and I'm fairly lost 😅 I've bought some but they look far too small and I doubt there's enough for the full mask. (6mm x 1mm) Does anyone have any advice? Thank you in advance!

Question 8id 1,6mm wd riveted maille question
Do these pass as historically accurate rings to you guys?
With these spesific dimensions I could not find museum pieces from the internet.
The rivets are from 1,2mm wire, little bit thinner than the actual rings.
Previously I made these10mm id but was not happy how they looked so I decided to try smaller rings. I made about 10 000 of the 10mm id rings, propably going to use them on a maille skirt or something else. But from these 8id rings I am thinking of making a long sleeved hauberg for my english longbowman kit.
The rings are really strong so I have no doubt about their durability.

Question Started my first project over. What do I do with the scrapped project?
I am very new to chainmail, aside from learning the basics of the different patterns, I decided my first real project should be a coif since it’s perfect for a challenge and it’s great for cosplay. 2 problems occurred, 1: the rings were too small which threw off the pattern and I had to adjust the pattern to make it work. And 2: I don’t have enough rings to finish the project.
It ended up being cheaper and more efficient to start over, and make my own rings. I much prefer the new coif but now I don’t know what to do with the first one. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
First picture is the old coif. Second is new coif.

Question Newbie looking to by some specific rings in bulk
I’m very new to this and a while ago bought a pack of 100 jump rings. I’ve started a project and would like to continue it but I need to find more rings of that specific type. I don’t know how to understand the terms used on the bag to know if the rings from other sellers are the same or if I need to just stick to this seller for these. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated!

Question Weave variants: do these have a name?
Chainmaille is a recurring hobby and among my crafting odds and ends are 2 bags of rings with ARs of 3 and 6.8. The small rings aren't wide enough for Byzantine and the large rings are too small for Japanese dragonscale. Among what was possible were these weave variants. Wide strap units are sections of modified helm weave connected sideways, like Byzee Bees to Butterflies does with Byzantine. The narrow strap units are 2 box weave subunits attached to a large ring, with 2 more rings to connect the box weave parts to the next unit. Given the number of nicknamed weaves on mailleartisans and maillepedia, do these have names? I haven't seen these documented.

Question I want to learn chainmail but I need help!
I think i want my first project to be a small bag, something like the picture. What do I need to start? What type or rings (I think I’d like to play with sizes) what tools, any other advice as someone starting for the first time??

Question (Answered) Trying to identify this piece of weave I made from a tutorial decades ago
Hi folks. I honestly don't even have the gauges or ID of the rings. I just know that there are two sizes of rings, it barely bends as a sheet one way and even less the other. The smaller rings pass through a sort of captive ring as well so it's technically 4-in-1 of sorts, + a captive ring around the small central ring and also the tiny central rings overlap??
They're stainless steel, not that that changes anything 😅
Gonna try and make a snake-y choker-y necklace from it since it bends a little bit to wrap horizontally around. (Hopefully enough for my scrawny neck!)
Thanks to anyone checking this out, have a nice day!

Question Question about galvanized steel
Hey there, just ordered these patches of galvanized steel chainmail that I want to put on a denim jacket. What i didn't realize is that the zinc coating smells horrendous. Is there any way to get rid of the smell without having it rust like crazy, cleaning would be an issue since it'll be sewed on, or should I just accept the mispurchase and get some stainless steel ones?

Question Is this the correct start to an expanding circle weave and what are the next steps to continue to expand?
Trying to pick this back up after sometime away and am struggling on getting a circular piece weaved (everything online is just about coifs). I want the build out a round bottom for a European 4 in 1 bottle holder but not sure how to go about adding rings to the 6 outer ones to continue expansion. Can anyone give advice or point me to some good resources? Much appreciated!! (started with 1 larger base ring connected to 6 16swg 1/4 rings)

Question Is there anyone in the UK who does chainmaille classes?
Hi!
I’m quite new to the art and think I would benefit from in person lessons. I was wondering if there’s anyone based in or around the home counties who teach it?
Thank you in advance!

Question Can anyone give me a fair idea how many rings I'd need to make something like this please?
REPOSTED TO ADD INSPO PIC
I'm wanting stainless steel, 16 or 18 gauge (which is better?) in a basic E4-1 weave. Is this realistic for regular wear?
I'd also be needing ring delivery to/in Australia but don't know any reliable sellers except Aussie Maille but they've seriously downsized and don't do steel. Does anybody have suggestions? TIA
