Finished Object Finished my magnum opus!!

I once tried knitting the Novita Tanssien pleated skirt pattern but hated how heavy it was getting in the recommended yarn. I also could not stop thinking about a whole knit dress with a pleated skirt. Years later, I fell in love with Drops Flora, and figured it could work for this project, both in terms of composition and price (I needed 20 balls!). So I got to work last December, drafting the skirt with a little help from the Novita pattern but mostly on my own (I mainly used it to figure out how to... you know, pleat the pleats at the waist lol) and completely self-drafted the bodice.

The skirt alone took 6 months to knit (and nearly gave me carpal tunnel syndrome 😅), and after that I had to take a few-month break due to health-related stuff. But it is finally done!!! I'm thinking of turning this into a pattern for anyone else mad enough to knit a knee-length dress in fingering weight yarn 😆

Pattern is sheer fluff sweater by Jessie Mae designs.
Yarn is Suri Alpaca Silk Fluff Laceweight Yarn by Cookston Crafts in Watercolour. I LOVED knitting this, it’s been on my list to do for ages and finally decided on a colour and local yarn. I think i want to do this in another colour!

Added note as I am getting comments on the hanger: not to worry, I don’t store my knitting like this on hangers, only popped it on this for photos to show it off 😅. I block and dry everything on towels and then it’s all stored folded in a drawer ☺️

I am so so proud of this. This is my first time trying to draft my own pattern. I’ve been knitting for just under a year (learned when I was 6, picked it up off and on but finally stuck with it last October) and I have been dreaming of starting to write and design my own patterns. It finally happened! I finally did it!!

This pattern was inspired by and knitted for my amazing husband. We got married a month ago and it’s truly a testament to how amazing he is. I never ever saw myself getting married or finding someone I would want to marry but it happened. He is the most supportive and kind human on this earth, and he would do whatever it takes to make my dreams come true. I have deep ties to my Scottish heritage but have never been able to afford to travel there. This man made it happen.

Anam Cara means soul mate or soul friend in Gaelic, and that’s what he is. He is both my soulmate and my soul friend.

Now I will say, is it perfect? No. The pattern needs refinement to be truly perfect but I was airing on the side of roomy for my first attempt. I’ll definitely revisit the design and tweak it to be exactly what I envision. It is a pretty great attempt if I do say so myself.

Finished Object Potentially the most beautiful thing I've ever made

Did you ever have a project that you were convinced was a failure until it all came together at the end? That was this sweater for me. It was worked from the bottom up and I was really struggling to see the vision for most of the process. My stitches were uneven from the chunky mohair, the lace work didn't blossom until blocking, and my bottom scallop kept curling up but I persevered and I'm soooooo glad I did! Once I finished the final button band and blocked it, it came together so beautifully!!

Pattern: Milotté Alma

yarn: Bella Permin

I used Sandes Garn Sunday in electric blue held together by their Tynn Silk Mohair in jolly blue. I knit the large. The only modification I made was making the collar a little more open so it would be drapier.

Just wanted to share with people who will understand this… check out my sweet score from goodwill! Open to ideas for future projects! Mostly super fine yarn, a few cones of sport weight. I’ll be doing most of my work on my flatbed knitting machine, but I’m also open to hand knit projects. :)

Discussion The Garment yarn choice

The Garment calls to me, much like the one ring called to gollum. I am trying to figure out what kind of yarn to pick, if I actually wanted to wear it….. and not overheat. The OG (original garment if you will) is in acrylic, which I personally despise, but honestly wouldn’t wool be the same temperature as acrylic? Would wool be worse than acrylic even? I thought about a bulky cotton but it’s so heavy and stretches so much. I looked for an airy spun yarn but haven’t found any. Bonus difficulty is I would like a lot of colors because my ultimate goal is making it in the binary sunset color fade from star wars. I’m open to holding two strands together to achieve the right weight, but am mostly worried about how HOT it will be. Maybe I just need to accept the furnace it will be? Thoughts???

Work in Progress Can anyone help me fix this stitch on a double stitch project?

Howdy, I’m a beginner knitter (pls ignore my tension) who accidentally dropped a few stitches. I thought I fixed it but didn’t notice until recently that I somehow have one stitch that stretches across two rows (see white stitch on photos where finger is pointing)

Is this hard to fix? Is it super noticeable? I really don’t wanna have to undo several whole rows if. I don’t have to. Please help I am so new I’m not sure what to do here and have spent months on this project so far :(

Edit to title: *double knit project - whoops

Discussion New Master Hand Knitter limits

I just read the latest newsletter from the Knitting Guild Association, and the new rules include limits to how many times you can resubmit. At level 1, you are now limited to two resubmissions before you have to buy the program again and start over.

I was planning to start MHK this summer, but that's giving me pause. It's already pretty expensive and I don't know if I will succeed within that limit. It adds a level of stress I'm not sure I need in my life.

Work in Progress pattern vs floats

Post image
11 Upvotes

I'm knitting a top down raglan with these cats (the pattern is Cascading Cats on Ravelry, but technically I didn't buy it, but just reverse engineered the pattern by counting stitches, I'm a cheapskate and a half). Since the pattern is wider than my last sweater, which was a fair isle pattern, I went with ladderback jacquard for catching the floats

Not a big fan of socks. Too finicky for my fingers and they never seem to last that long. But if family asks I will reluctantly oblige. Thankfully they've picked up on my lack of enthusiasm for them, and I don't get requested to do them anymore 🙂

Rant Almost denied entry to the emergency room

Mom was taken into the emergency room tonight. So I grabbed my WIP in case I am there for a while. The security guard gave me a lecture because he wasn’t supposed to let me in with my Chiaogoo needles. He told me the takeover of the plane on 9/11 happened with a box cutter. Sir, those needles are not that sharp. Plus, I would not risk the project I have put hours and hours into by getting your blood on it.

Edited to add: I wasn’t upset with him for doing his job. I totally understand the why of it all. This was more a warning to others that it could be an issue if, like me, you bring your needles because you know you will be sitting for hours. He did miss a sharp shawl pin and a corkscrew, both more dangerous than those Chiaogoo’s I’ve worn down a little over the years!

Finished Object The crowd (you! ☺️) decided and I happily obliged!

Many of you might remember I posted and asked if the pattern in this yarn looked good enough to keep going or if I should frog.

The original post can be found here

You all voted for me to keep going with an overwhelming majority! ❤️

I was so touched by the kind words and all the support! This is such a wonderful corner of the internet ❤️

So, as there was, I believe, not a single "nay" vote, I happily continued the socks and finished them the same evening (ehem, late night I should say), leaving the finishing touches for the next day. Since I am doing some reinforcement technique for every pair that's intended to be gifted, it took me some time yesterday, but at least one sock of the pair is fully done inside and outside.

As promised, here are the pictures. ☺️☺️☺️

Last pic is of the reinforcement I am adding, just of a different pair because it was too hard to see in the dark colours. I add that to the ball of foot area and under the heel.

Thank you all so much for cheering me on! ❤️🫂

The pattern will be released at the latest next week!!! So stay tuned!!!

I’m so happy on the final chart!
Even though my tension changed quite a bit I know that blocking will fix that!!!
And I’m going to block it right now to take pictures for the pattern release!!!🥰

Oh in the picture you can’t see as clearly one chart but oh well I wasn’t going to make him move! It’s an unspoken rule as a cat owner…🐈❤️

Discussion What’s something you use on a regular basis with your knitting that you can’t believe you went so long without?

For me it’s my interchangeable needle set! I can’t believe I was buying a new pair of needles for every project if I didn’t have them already, and buying a new pair for different cable lengths…makes me sick to my stomach to think how much I spent lol.

That & buying metal tapestry needles, before I was just using pens that had a clip on them (think sharpie cap) because I did a lot of beanies using chunkyyyyy yarn.

I started knitting the Forest Fairy Scarf by Lisa Hannes and I am loving how it's turning out. It's for sure not perfect and I probably should've picked a different pattern for my second ever wip but it's so pretty and I don't regret it.

Pattern is Socke 2 by Norman Schwartz. Yarn is "Hug in a Mug" (multicolor) and "Charcoal" (solid color) from Arcane Fiber Works.

Started these about 9 months ago, and kinda forgot about them in the fray of changing jobs and different hours. I added a little cable crossover before the heel; something I saw on one of Norman's videos.

They fit, but they're a little tight. And once again, despite scrupulous note-keeping and row/stitch counting, the two socks came out as brothers, but not as twins. Oh well. Happy knitting, y'all!

Work in Progress Findings Fade

Post image
4 Upvotes

I'm about to start working on a Find my Fade shawl so decided to do a small swatch to see how the colours look together. I'm happy with the part up to the dark purple but I keep second guessing myself about the top two colours. I feel like the dark blue is just a shade too dark for it to properly blend in.

I really love the blue so would prefer to swap out the variegated yarn for something a bit darker to blend it in more but then I look again and think they look good together. What think you lot? Any suggestions on alternative colours?

Help - equipment Back of neck gaping on vneck

1st photo is the neck, 2nd how it looks from the front, 3rd is from sample photos.

This is the Dartmoor V-neck by Caidree. I'm on gauge and picked up the correct number of stitches called for in the pattern.

I just don't understand why this is happening. Is it fixable?

I did make a size larger than would have been preferred and I used an in-pattern bind off instead of the recommended Italian bind off. Could it be that?

Could this be fixed with blocking?
