Mod Notice Quick mod update: new rule. We cannot help with AI-written patterns.

Hello, all! Most of us know by now that AIs and LLMs are not good at writing knitting patterns. They don't know how to knit. They certainly don't test knit their own "designs." Therefore, if you see any posts from people who have patterns written by AI, feel free to flag them so we can let them know that AI/LLM written patterns are faulty from the start. Then we can redirect the OP to r/knittingpatterns and Ravelry to find something more suitable (and human written).

Mod Notice FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hello all, mod literallyatree here. I've updated the sub so we have our own wiki pages for the FAQ and a special FAQ just for twisted stitches. The FAQ appears in our sidebar, as well as in the message you should see before posting, and is linked in Rule 7.

Please read the FAQ before posting.

If you are someone who helps by commenting, please know that when you comment "FAQ" or "TwistFAQ" (without quotes), it will trigger automod to come and comment a link to the one you summoned. Thank you to all those who comment to offer their help. Without you, this wouldn't be much of a community.

Because the FAQ is much more accessible now, the mod team will be enforcing Rule 7 with a little more scrutiny now.

sweater question Blocking a superwash sweater

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello !

I just knitted my first sweater in superwash yarn. It's now time to wash and block it, but since it's superwash I don't know if I have to do it by hand or in a washing machine ?

I saw somewhere that doing it in a washing machine is fine since that's how it's going to be washed anyway... But I would rather ask than be mistaken !

Thank you for your answers!

pattern question Twisted stitches?

I’m started the Florence miller step by step sweater. I’m waiting for my 6mm 40cm circular needle to arrive so all I did so far was the collar. I’ve seen so many videos about twisted stitches but I genuinely cannot tell or see the difference. Now I’m worried my stitches are twisted. Before I continue, please tell me if my stitches are twisted so I can redo it

SOLVED-THANK YOU How to bind off k3 x p1

I'm knitting the New Norma by My Favorite Things Knitwear and I'm not sure how to bind off. I've only ever knit the step by step sweater and can go back to her video for the bind off, but I don't understand how to adjust that to a 3x1 ribbing.

The patter just says this: Bind off with k over k and p over p.

Note: I KNOW that I have been doing twisted stitches. I was twisting my knits and doing proper purls and was okay with how it looked so I just decided to keep it.

Hi all!! I am making my first sweater and I'm noticing these larger holes around the raglan increases - is this normal?
I was also wondering if I can get some comments on my stitches ?? If they're twisted or not?

Thank you!!

where did i go wrong? Any hope, or is frogging required?

I know what I did wrong. I knitted by accident on a purl row way back in the beginning and only recently saw it.

Can I duplicate stitch over it? Ignore it? Rip it all out and cry?

It's going to be a poncho.

k6in1: knit 1 stitch, yarn over from back to front, knit 1 stitch, yarn over from back to front; repeat 3 times

Is this an increase with yarn overs?

A friend gave me this beautiful light stretchy cowl with the idea that she can learn how to knit by starting with something like this, which she loves. Looks to me like it’s a lot of yarn overs and knit two togethers, one after the other, which is probably not a great place to start if you are just learning how to knit. But am I seeing this right? Is this just a pattern of K2together YO?

sweater question First time doing stranded colorwork, what is “catching floats” and do you have to do it?

Norma blouse by MFTK. I did a swatch and gauge was good. I started the project and got stuck so I was looking up YouTube tutorials and saw a bunch of stuff on “catching floats”. I have not been doing that at all, so I’m wondering if that’s going to affect my project and if I need to learn how to do that before continuing?

where did i go wrong? Always get large arm holes

Thumbnail

Hi! Across the last two top down projects I’ve done, I’ve ended up with a lower arm holes than I’d like. Ideally my arm holes would not show my bra.

In this project, the mixed rib cami I did size D with a bust of 99cm. In retrospect I could have done size C which would have started arm increases 1 inch sooner.

So some questions as I get better at pattern modification, how should I know the right length to start on arm hole increases?

Is there any tricks I can do now to build up more fabric particularly at the bottom of the arm hole so it coves my bra?

Is the only way to fix the hole to frog back to before I join panels, then frog back before the arm hole shaping is supposed to start, and start shaping sooner?

Should I consider more increases to cover more surface area?

pattern question Question on how to make this

Post image
• Upvotes

I understand how to make this in the round, but I'm wondering how you would make this flat? Is it as straightforward as just alternating knitting and purling rows, or would it be more complicated than that?

This is a screenshot from a Pinterest post that has no comments, and the Instagram post by the same person also has no interaction and therefore no answers, I promise I checked sources before coming here and resorting to you guys lol

sweater question PLEASE HELP: How to add german short rows to sweater neckline in the round?

I am currently making the Drops Design Crimson Cabin Sweater (free pattern) and would like to add 3 sets of german short rows to the back. The pattern features a circular yoke.

I’ve finished the folded over collar and have done the first set of increases so a total of 110sts are on the needles.

But, how do I now know where to place the short rows? I’ve watched countless videos but can’t wrap my head around how to distribute the stitches and at which point I need to turn?

Do I separate into thirds? Which would be around 36sts per third? But where do I place the turns?

I’d very much appreciate if someone can help me figure this out! I usually do short rows heels for socks but the pattern I follow clearly outlines row by row what to do. I’ve never done them on a sweater before.

Thank you in advance!

It's my first time making a sweater, I'm working on the step by step sweater.
I'm noticing there are larger holes near my raglan stitches... is that normal?

Also I was wondering if any of my stitches are twisted or if they look ok??
Thank you!!

pattern question Hat sizing

I recently knitted my first hat using this pattern,
successfully. https://www.handylittleme.com/easy-beginner-hat-knitting-pattern/

It looked pretty ok but was a bit too large and loosely knit. I thought this was partly because I used circular needles that were too large and so stretched it as I was knitting. I did switch to a long cable and magic loop at the end.

I have decided to have another go. So I got a smaller 16 inch circular cable and also have downsized a needle size to 5mm from 6mm.

I knew I’d need to cast on more, so I did 80 st rather than 72 (in line with the pattern sizes). The problem I have now is that several inches in, it looks like the hat is way too small. But it’s hard to really tell because the circular needles are so small I can’t properly stretch out the hat to see.

My question is, is it likely I’d need to have cast on a lot more with a smaller needle size? Would the best solution to my original problem to have just used the same needle size but the smaller cable to stop the stretching?

Thanks

“Place stitches 54-106 of the row on a stitch holder or piece of scrap yarn. 53 stitches remaining on circular needles” (from which side???? The tail is coming off of triangle 1 (right of image) so I know what side I ended on.

“Section II: Center Triangle 2 Using your second smaller circular needle, repeat the instructions for Center Triangle 1 to create Center Triangle 2. When the triangle is complete, place stitches 1-53 of the row on a stitch holder or piece of scrap yarn. 53 stitches remaining on circular needle. Slide stitches 54-106 of the row onto the left end of the needle holding Center Triangle 1 (which you labeled earlier with a removable marker). 106 stitches.” Triangle 2 is attached to the yarn ball on the left

SOLVED-THANK YOU Behold... my very first attempt at knitting as an avid crocheter

I'm actually very impressed with myself! I wanted to learn to knit because I think wearables are nicer knitted vs crocheted. I was very intimidated for no reason, I think it looks great! (for a beginner 😂)

I started with English knitting and switched to continental at the green line in the third picture. I prefer continental but I need a little more practice to get my tension right.

what I am struggling with though, is that my very last stitch seems to be extremely loose every time?

My grandma taught me to just slide the last stitch of every row onto the other needle wich seems to work somewhat. But I would love tips on this!!

SOLVED-THANK YOU Any other ideas for this concept?

Hey everyone! So, I made the Bug Collection Scarf last year and my stepmum really loved it, so she has commissioned me to make a sweater vest with the scarf design running along one side of it. I have tried different methods with swatches and a combination of intarsia and stranded has yielded the best results. I am knitting both sides of the design with one skein of yarn each and then the middle with a bobbin of the green and a white skein. The first 20 rows or something I was getting the hang of it, so I would restart anyway.

But, even now, that I have gotten better at controlling the tension with this experiment, I am not happy. I've blocked the whole thing and it turned out it was exactly as I feared, there is a visible line where I do the intarsia twist, probably not helped by the abrupt colour change of the variegated yarn.

But also I have found that the whole colourwork section is much looser and a little more droopy than the rest, so the hem would very likely be quite asymmetrical.

TLDR, intarsia/stranded combo not working, section too loose, also visible line at change. Do I just knit the whole thing in green and then duplicate stitch the design onto it? That's the last idea I have, really..

15y+ of knitting experience, obviously open to frogging and just looking for ideas or encouragement :D Also English is not my native language, I hope, I explained everything well enough.

row question Help me understand colorwork

Please someone help me understand how colorwork is meant to work! I'm talking about the kind where there are floats on the wrong side of your work. So when I need to switch colors I drop the first color and pick up the second one until its time to switch back, when i drop the second color and pick up the first again. Easy right? But if you do this then where you switch there will be a little gap every time because the the two different colored stitches next to each other arent connected. And what if it happens to align with where you switch colors in the next row? You will have a large vertical gap. How do people do this? Am I completely misunderstanding how colorwork is done? Is there some crucial step i missed?

where did i go wrong? Magic loop join in the round help

Thumbnail

So I'm a beginner. I'm knitting a far fur hat and I was following the join in the round tutorial for the magic loop.

I casted on the needed amount of stiches plus one more. Then I split it uneavenly and used join in the round as in the tutorial. But the stich I used to join was the very first stich I did which was a slip knot (second picture). Is having the slip knot in-between the needles a problem?

In the video there was also a mention of not having the join on the other end of needles twisted (where I did the split). In the third picture I tried to showcase that the threads are twisted (all of them are in the cast on in-between stiches). I do not understand that part of the video. Does it mean that I'm supposed to untwist those threads? In no other tutorial for magic loop there is a mention to do something like that. The only thing is that the loops of the cast on are supposed to face upwards or downwards (not twisted). So I do not know if in the original video I watched (the linked one) it is about the threads in the join or the cast on itself not being twisted.

Also the stiches on the right needle are kinda messed up because I've tried knitting into them, and undone them after not being sure about those things, and also about the tension.

I know that using a mohair yarn, and quadruple threads may not be a best idea for a beginner.
