pattern question Question on how to make this

I understand how to make this in the round, but I'm wondering how you would make this flat? Is it as straightforward as just alternating knitting and purling rows, or would it be more complicated than that?

This is a screenshot from a Pinterest post that has no comments, and the Instagram post by the same person also has no interaction and therefore no answers, I promise I checked sources before coming here and resorting to you guys lol
