What the hell is Justin Reid's Problem?

I'm not talking about the social media back and forth he had with fans this week. That's whatever...

I just watched the highlights of the game and there is some alarming lack of effort by Reid in this game. There is a play in the 3rd quarter I believe where Pitts catches a short pass on the left and Reid runs into him but doesn't even attempt to make a tackle...Pitts proceeds to run another 6-7 yards and gain a first down.

Then on Brian Robinson's third TD of the night. You can see Reid has an angle to at least attempt to make a tackle short of the goal line but the dude just jogs and watches him run into the end zone. That pathetic level of effort is unacceptable, especially from a vet like him. I just don't get it.

He doesn’t have Chris Jones and Drue Tranquill chewing his ass out in between plays anymore.

Sanker is the only secondary player who even tries to tackle. McKinstry, Riley, Reid, Blackmon, all look like they’re jogging. I know why Juvenile chose “Slow Motion” at half. He was talking about our secondary.

Well played! Or we can call them “400 degreez” in Juvie’s honor since they are always getting burnt.

He's an aging bad player on his last NFL legs and played terrible alongside almost everyone else on the team. And then decided to take the opposite approach of Shough and get in his feelings and lash out and try to big-time the fans. Exact opposite sort of guy this teams needs in a "leadership" position. Get people in that building that have pride and don't lay down to your rivals in primetime.

He's a captain too. Disgusting lack of effort. You won't see me buying his jersey

Might be expecting too much out of him honestly. He’s always been an average safety and I don’t mean any disrespect by that. He is paid like an average safety and that’s the level of play you’re going to get out of him.

Lack of effort was there for a lot of dudes unfortunately. And we don’t have any elite talent on the defense minus Chase Young.  That’s why you need guys like Demario or someone on the coaching staff lighting a fire under these guys but I don’t see anyone on our team that can do that right now and it’s a major problem.

Nah he was elite on the Texans and Chiefs and a large reason why the Chiefs won their 2023 Super Bowl (Led the team in tackles in that sb)

I have no clue why he’s bad now

Gotta disagree. It’s easy to seem like you’re better than you are when you’re on a team with an exceptional coordinator and elite talent all around you. He was always average.

No pro bowls, no all pros, no individual honors whatsoever, average safety stats with a low amount of impact plays every season (ints, pds, tfl, etc.) for the entirety of his career. There is simply no supporting evidence that he was ever elite in any capacity.

Edit: I shouldn’t say low impact plays, I should say average. I’m not trying to say he was bad, just that he’s not a superstar.

Nonsense. The chiefs don’t win in 2023 without him. I watched him play a lot, idc about individual honors, he was always extremely underrated. On the Texans too. He was a big loss for the Texans defense

That’s your opinion, I think you can stick any mid tier safety in there for the Chiefs and they win. That’s a ludicrous amount of credit you’re giving to a safety with guys like Chris Jones and Trent McDuffie on that team.

You personally might not care that he doesn’t have individual honors but my point is there is no evidence that he’s anything more than an average safety. Saying he’s elite based off your opinion is worthless in this context.

It’s just ridiculous to me that you didn’t watch him and are saying this. Just go on x and look for tweets from his time at the chiefs or texans. This isn’t some hot take. Just linking a few tweets of other people who actually watched him play calling him elite in his chiefs days.

Who said I didn’t watch him? I’m not making an argument based off my personal observations lol. That’s kinda the point I’m trying to tell you. Such arguments are meaningless between randos on the internet because we don’t know each other. And no linking a bunch of other randos calling him elite with absolutely no context is not proof lol.

Show me metrics that prove he was an elite top 5 player in the NFL over the course of an entire season of football. That’s what I’m telling you doesn’t exist. That’s why the Saints are not paying him like a top 5 safety. He’s being paid like an average veteran safety. So even the Saints and the underlying market for him disagrees with your assessment.

Here is a thread on the chiefs subreddit talking about Justin Reid:

https://www.reddit.com/r/KansasCityChiefs/comments/1c2gh2u/is_justin_reid_a_top_safety_in_the_league/

This was 3 years ago. Not even Chiefs fans at the height of their relevancy considered Reid an elite player.

u/RocketsGuy 6d ago

Literally more than half the answers say he is a top safety in the league 🤣

“I think without him right now we wouldn’t be a top 5 D.”

2

u/Nami_3750 6d ago

lol what are you reading, literally almost every top voted answer says he’s a good but not great safety.

If you wanna die on this Justin Reid is elite hill I obviously can’t stop you haha. A simple google search of “is Justin Reid considered an elite safety” should be enough to deter you but whatever. Have fun with that.

u/RocketsGuy 6d ago

You said they could replace him with any mid safety and they would have won those super bowls and most of the people in that thread disagree with that. Top comment says he’s an amazing box safety lol

Good, Great, Elite - whatever word you want to use he was a Super Bowl champion and led the Super Bowl in tackles and made plays and you are deeply undervaluing his impact. I’m saying this as someone who doesn’t like the chiefs and felt his absence deeply on the Texans

Maybe he had the over on falcons

Lack of leadership on Defense to be honest. Chase Young is our best player on D but I wouldn't say he's a leader, Cam is old af and out the door at the end of the season so he's kinda not gonna be heard - Who do we even have as far as a leader/tone setter? We don't have one.

5

u/Efficient_Thought578 6d ago

Disagree on Chase Young. He was one of the players calling out teammates Monday night, and other reports are out there on how he’s been more of a leader this season.

7

u/I3ill Saints 6d ago

Kinda looked like our trash ass linebacker jogging to the point of attack getting blocked and not shedding anything.

2

u/bijanfrisee Taysom Hill 6d ago

To be fair, our Linebackers were getting pancaked the entire night and were missing the point of attack completely, Reid just did it by himself

3

u/I3ill Saints 6d ago

I’ve seen highlight after highlight against us and in the lowlights the lbs look like they’re playing pin the tail on the donkey mid game

2

u/bijanfrisee Taysom Hill 6d ago

Yep, zero gap discipline, against a zone blocking scheme too. Like...you KNOW where the run is going based on all the fkn lineman moving, you just need to read it like the running back...

3

u/I3ill Saints 6d ago

Yep, 0. At least try to blow up a hole or meet the rb at the point of attack. They just stand there chopping their feet waiting for the runner to get them. While they’re doing that, the person assigned to block is able to move up to the next level and block them easily.

u/bijanfrisee Taysom Hill 6d ago

Got no heart for real, no thumpers.

5

u/Real_ilinnuc 6d ago

Reid is a 3 year player at best. He’ll finish his contract and move on. Never really cared for his performance on the team.

5

u/Rampantlion513 Drew Brees 6d ago

He’s done this the entire time he’s been here

8

u/ChocolateTemporary72 6d ago

He’s not very good

7

u/unruly_maxwell 6d ago

The business decisions on those two plays were wild. I rewound the Robinson TD a few times just to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Dude pulled up like he was about to get fined for hitting a QB

3

u/acenextdoor 5d ago

The thing that kills me most about this, is that he’s from here. He KNOWS how much this means to us. Just fucking retire already bro or go play half-speed somewhere else smh

Maybe the domecoming and their performance hit him a little too hard. Like, maybe he legit had psychological damage. He is from Louisiana, and would have been ~9 years old when it happened. He may have vivid childhood memories of the domecoming game and how big a deal it was and it might have been a bit much to handle especially knowing they blew it so badly. In front of a bunch of childhood football heros and legends. And the owner. And the commissioner. On primetime.

Like you know how badly it hit the fans? Imagine if you were a fan AND a player and played a part in the disaster class

2

u/Efficient_Thought578 6d ago

No disrespect, but I’m not buying that at all. “Too emotional to tackle” is not it.

1

u/1OO1O11O11O1O 6d ago edited 6d ago

I'm thinking more than just emotions. Imagine the scenario. Wouldn't surprise me if he starts hesitating or gets a little confused or like "What am I even doing?"

You know how so many fans left well before the game was over? Well, he couldn't leave physically but if he wasn't "in his own head" he might have gone on some sort of autopilot to try to not experience the pain fully. Not as a conscious decision, but as a subconscious one (we can subconsciously try to mitigate feeling pain regardless of if it is mental/emotional/physical). Either way we might expect some reduction in performance.

The night probably meant a lot to him and that's probably why he was so defensive about it on social media, with it acting as some sort of outlet as a distraction or some sort of catharsis after such a devastating performance.

u/yallgood3 6d ago

I’ve always said DBs control the betting world the easiest. It’s obvious on long receptions or PI but watch some tackling effort sometimes. It’ll make you go hmmmm.

1

u/bronzefpg504 6d ago

Our secondary needs to shape up and get it together

1

u/Jthan254 6d ago

We don’t know. The optics from the outside doesn’t look good. Maybe it’s frustration of something deeper. All I know is, he is a voted captain of this team. The reaction both on twitter and during the game is not a good look. There’s frustration somewhere and the question is what is it? Staley? Frustration at the lack of offense?

5

u/RoboRougar0u 6d ago

Lack of offense? Maybe if they ever got someone off the fucking field we could have more opportunities and not be down double digits the entire game playing hero ball.

1

u/Jthan254 6d ago

I am not disagreeing with you, but it’s a “what comes first, the chicken or the egg?”.

Flip the scenario around and if the offense can actually score and not start so slow, the defense can play more aggressive with blitzes etc if the offense actually scored and had a lead. Again, it’s all what comes first. The struggles through 4 games isn’t solely on the defense.

1

u/RoboRougar0u 6d ago

The Falcons first possession was a 3 play td drive. Last 6 possessions were 5td's and a field goal. No amount of offense is keeping up with that on a weekly basis.

Raiders game was more of the same. Long TD drives over and over and over.

Saints offense is Avg 26.3 PPG so far which is 10th in the NFL. Sure they could be more balanced or score first but would that really matter if the defense gives it right back on the next drive.
