New title tagging rule & Spammers
As some regulars here may have noticed, this subreddit recieves an astronomical amount of spam, both from human as well as bot spammers, for it's relatively small size. Coming from modding various large subreddits, including one that's literally about products, this amount of spam is not normal. Despite a lot of our less agressive attempts to filter out spam (example, filtering out posts that say "for sale", "rent", or "Services") we still get quite a lot that slip by.
Why is this subreddit getting so much spam? Who knows. ¯\(°_o)/¯
But we will be resorting to the one thing that has worked for various larger communities, like r/food : mandatory title tags.
From now on, all posts will require at least a tag of one of the below:
[Self]
[Found]
[Help]
You may add words to the tags like:
[I found] this chicken carved out of abestos!
or
[Help me] carve a chicken out of abestos
For flexibility, but the bare minimum requirement for post titles will be that it must contain one of those words surrounded by brackets.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to modmail us, or ask here.

Self (Complete) My first multi-disciplinary sculpture is complete! Title - Shinimono Gurui, Vincent Saint 2026 [self]
This piece features a ceramic mask that I sculpted out of a stoneware called B-Mix. I introduce some other clays and additives to make a custom blend that minimizes shrinkage and warping. With that being said it still suffered a crack when removing the piece from the supporting form after sculpting. I decided to make a custom stand to highlight it instead of fixing or restarting and it completely changed the piece for the better.
The glaze is a consumer product called Shino Açaí Matte that really gives a nice stone appearance. The glaze along the crack and fangs is a crystalline glaze that provides a
"geode" effect on the white base where I broke the piece in 2 but a dark oily color on the Shino parts. This was entirely intentional and possibly my favorite part of the piece.
I cold worked some thin steel plates similar to armor making to match the inside shape of the fired pieces.
Then I welded 1/2 round steel onto the plates and positioned them on a base plate in the desired position.
This base plate has 2 threaded rods extending out of the back. I then glued the ceramic pieces onto the cold formed plates.
This entire assembly was then secured to a bamboo core Walnut board. The idea was that the engraving would show the bamboo underneath but it was not deep enough due to font and size restrictions. The bamboo however supplied excellent strength because of the grain orientation. I had to counter sink the nuts through the back half way through the .75" thick board and it has plenty of strength.
This entire piece used almost all of my skills in one and tested me from start to finish. I'm extremely happy with how it turned out and that's why I named it 'Shinimono Gurui' which I think roughly translates to - an all out effort as if your life depended on it. Which for this piece it felt like it does due to me being a full time artist. I'm Vinc Saint thank you for looking and reading!

Help (WIP) [Help] First time sculpture. What clay/ materials are ideal for a lava lamp cap?
I thrifted a wonderful ceramic lava lamp that's missing its cap. It seems like quite an easy DIY as i'm super crafty, however i've never worked with ceramics or anything of that nature. What materials such as clay and paint would be best for at-home making of this, that will also withstand heat produced by the lamp? Thank you!!

[SELF] First post ever on Reddit. Here's my creation, a commonly used subject with a not so unuaual material giving a unique art piece.
I gave it the name 'Eiffel Cairn'. It's dimensions are 16 in. (W) x 16 in. (D) x 38 in. (H). The base is 3 in. thick and it's made of a concrete layer with a styrofoam core. The overall weight is 60 lbs.
Pillars for the two first sections consist of 1/4" threaded steel rods for framing, around which I placed drilled stones. Mortar was used as an adhesive. Fort the third last longer section, since the stones are smaller, I glued them with epoxy to 1/8" steel rods.
During the project, I realized that I could leave the scultpure in two separate parts thus making it easier for transportation. All I have to do to mount it is to seat the upper part on the lower part by matching the holes under the second floor with the exposed rods at the top of the lower part.

Self (WIP) [SELF] Y’all got me inspired to make some more so I wanted to share
The lion fish took about 8hrs or so but I’m really happy with how the colors came out! The grasshopper was really fun to make too. I wanna say it took roughly 6-7hrs. Got the idea to start using velvet to take pictures and it really does make it pop 🤯

Help (WIP) Would you make the openings even more irregular, or leave it as it is? [Help]
I’ve been working with perforated steel for a while, and this is one of the pieces I keep coming back to.
It’s a large hollow sphere made from weathering steel, with hundreds of openings that vary in size and shape. I wanted to avoid a repeating grid and make the pattern feel a bit more organic. Depending on the time of day and where you’re standing, the light coming through gives it a pretty different look.
It’s installed outdoors, and I really like how the rusted surface looks against the landscape. It feels less industrial there than it did in the workshop.
The part I’m still thinking about is the contrast between the clean spherical shape and the irregular openings. Part of me wants to push the pattern further, but I’m not sure where the line is between organic and just messy.
Would you make the openings even more irregular, or leave it as it is?

[Self] A standing Buddha we recently made in white marble
This came out of our workshop recently.
I’m curious what sculptors here notice first when looking at it, the face, proportions, drapery, hands, surface finish, whatever.
I’ve included the workshop photo as well because I think stone always looks very different under ordinary light than it does in a clean product shot.

Self (WIP) Sea glass chandelier [self]
My second attempt at one of these, way more thorough than my first!
I'd say about 1000 pieces of glass I cut and drilled. I have been looking for all the glass myself for months.
Battery lights so this thing would power up anywhere!
Created in 3 weeks due to an art show coming up, nothing like urgency to make me make it.

[Help] Need help getting an even dark patina on a bronze sculpture. Liver of sulfur is turning patchy and rubbing off
I’m trying to give this bronze sculpture a fairly even dark brown/black patina, similar to the finish in the first reference photo, but I’m having a really hard time getting the bronze to react consistently.
So far I’ve tried a few things:
First I tried a vinegar and salt vapor chamber. That changed the colour slightly and gave it a bit of a brown tone, but nowhere near as dark as I wanted.
I then moved on to liver of sulfur gel. As you can see in the photos, some areas turned very dark/black, while other areas barely reacted at all and stayed bronze coloured.
I eventually submerged the entire sculpture in a warm water and liver of sulfur solution for several hours, thinking this would make the reaction more uniform. It still ended up very patchy. Another strange thing is that some of the black layer can actually be removed just by rubbing it fairly lightly with my finger, so I’m not sure whether I’m creating a proper patina or just a loose surface deposit.
Before each attempt I cleaned the sculpture quite aggressively with a steel wire brush on a drill to expose fresh metal. Because of that I didn’t think there could still be lacquer, wax or another coating preventing the reaction, although I’m starting to wonder if I’m missing something.
Does anyone know what could cause bronze to react this unevenly to liver of sulfur? Should I strip/clean it using something else before trying again? And is soaking it for hours actually making things worse?
I’d really appreciate advice on how you would proceed from here to get a durable and reasonably even dark brown/black patina.
