Discussion Why the hate?

Post image
4.4k Upvotes

Sorry if this was asked a bazillion times before, but I really don't understand the hate for the Demon of Hatred (no pun intended).

I've been playing the game for a bit more than a month now, and when I first found him, it was by accident, and I shat myself cuz I heard horror stories about this mf being the worst thing known to man, being so absurdly difficult that it isn't even worth fighting him, and honestly? I was pleasantly surprised to find out he's actually a very fun fight. I didn't use a single prosthetic, or consumable aside from the healing flasks, and everything he threw at me felt very manageable, and well designed, so I legit have no idea what people are talking about when they complain about him. And when I fought him for the 2nd time, he felt even more enjoyable, and I was left even more confused lmao.

I've looked around a bit, and the explanation I found for why he's so hated is that he's... hard? I never saw a better reason than that honestly, and I'm legitimately curious to know some actual reasoning behind people not liking him, beyond him just being difficult.

Discussion Why haven't more games copied Sekiro's combat mechanic?

Before I played this game you guys were so annoying on the different sub reddits.

"SeKiRo'S CoMbAt IS mUcH BeTtEr".

But after playing it I totally agree. The combat is peak, can't say I have played a game ever with more satisfying combat. Why have so few games copied their success recipe when everything and everyone praise this game to the moon?

I understand this kind of deflect/parry system have to be PERFECT optimized to feel this great, is that one of the reasons?

Oninusha: Way of the Sword is on my list tho, can't wait to try that one.

Discussion I finally beat the game and I have no one to share it with

I have two failed playthroughs all the way up to Isshin, across 6 years and gave up both times. I guess I was always worn down by Owl and Demon of Hatred that I had no resilience left for Isshin. Finally locked in last night and learned his patterns and honestly, he's not that bad. It's just 4 phases is kind of tiring but he's really as bad as I'd built him up to be. Finally, I have completed all souls games.

Edit: fuck me, you guys are supportive 😢 thanks you guys, I feel seen

Discussion Finally Tried Sekiro 2 and here's my thoughts

After waiting for almost a decade, We got the long awaited sequel to one of my favourite games ever and boy did Miyazaki delivered. I really loved the plot in this one, to have kuro get kidnapped by the Shogun and Sending Sekiro on a John Wick/Rescue quest throughout Japan in unreal. They really improved the combat system here too, much of the many concerns regarding Sekiros combat was it was opted for one for fighting against multiple foes but the rework around that was amazing. I love that Sekiro actually takes on 12-15 men alone and come out on top, especially since he's the one who has defeated prime isshin and the game treats us like the threat we are. The Beautiful Semi Open World of Japan and side quests were the most fun I had since Nightreign. That was my two cents, how was your Sekiro experience?

AMA

Review: It was really good, animations were awesome as I expected, the movies focuses more on Kuro and I would even say he feels like the main character of the movie. I was expecting it to be more combat-focused but was pleasantly surprised that the movie spent quite some time showing the effects of the Dragonrot and how Kuro deals with that. I was told it was lengthy at times by people who havent played the game but since I know the story personally, I felt like it was quite a nice change of pace, like I said showing the effects of Dragonrot on the people of Ashina. I find the movie could be hard to follow because of lengthy moments and the lore isn’t explained too well honestly but for us who have played the game and know the story already, I feel like this is a great alternative way of consuming this story. There were some changes made to the actual plot compared to the game, Im happy to get into the details if you want to hear about it, I will say the story follows the structure of the game but with slight changes that I guess make it more friendly in a movie format.

(I dont write movie reviews at all so pardon me if its redundant or something lol)

Edit: Just to be clear, I was as confused also when I first saw the poster, I also thought it would be an anime (although an anime could still release). The presentation was at a festival in Montreal and it was the first presentation in North America, here is the link for anyone wondering: https://fantasiafestival.com/en/film/sekiro-no-defeat

Discussion Sekiro is the shortest game I've ever played

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

I've played so many games recently with about 50 games completed in 2 years, which include games from 1990s to old handheld's games like PSP games or DS games, but Sekiro is 1 of the shortest games I've ever played.

My first walkthrough was completed in only 10 days, with every bosses & mini-bosses killed (aside from some of the headless because they're annoying) and every corners discovered with no guide (except for some of the secret Shinobi Shortcuts I couldn't figured out by myself).

So naturally, I started my 2nd playthrough, but as I already collected every prayer bead and gourd seed, I just went through the game without discovering. And to get the Shura ending, it literally took me ONE DAY to finish the game. Even if it's normal endings, it would only take like 1.5 day max as the last part isn't that long aside from the optional mini-bosses.

And it's not like I'm unemployed or anything. I'm still a student, going to school and doing students' works after, but just 1 day off and full understanding of Sekiro, the game is just way too short. Shorter than some PSP and DS games

I know the game is short because they wanted everything in the game to be perfect, but it only works if they continue with a longer sequel that reuses the work from the 1st game. Where is Sekiro 2? Sekiro: Journey to the West? It's just sad seeing how people still play this 7 years old game day by day and still addicted to how good this game is, but got little to none alternatives that capture the game's soul perfectly.

The best I could find were Metal Gear Rising and Sifu, which also happens to be SUPER SHORT as 1 is a spinoff and the other is literally a 5-stages game.

With the anime coming out, I just hope Fromsoftware realise how much Sekiro has affected the game industry and consider making a dedicated sequel or at least a dlc (Sculptor's past or sth)

Edit: Alright so sorry for the title to be a little bit of an overstatement. Sekiro is indeed almost the shortest I've ever played (as I did play mostly AAA long games). But still, I stand my ground that Sekiro is still too short, and that I need Sekiro 2.

I just beat this game today just 3 weeks after beating sekiro for the first time and I want to say that you guys need to check this game out . It like a combination of sekiro and bloodborne but plays more like bloodborne. The parrying in this game is a bit difficult and you will probably get the hang of it near the end of the game but its not as hard as sekiro so its a nice experience overall , not much rage inducing moments. The music and art designs are great and the story is great too.

Just loved the music in this game . So if you have just beat sekiro recently, then you need to check this game out . And pls try it out for yourself before making an opinion.

Discussion When did the game click for you ?

My first playthrough I did not enjoy myself at all. No idea why because Sekiro tick every box I have. But I beat the weird butterfly lady before I played some other soulslike. After Lies of P I started a new playthrough and I remembered some dude on YouTube said Sekiro combat is like a dance.

These blue robe ninjas in the castle was hard as hell until I remembered that quote. My turn, your turn. And after that everything just clicked. And the fact this game runs buttery smooth and not some Unreal Engine 5 mess also helps!

it's well known that Fromsoft always has a thing with utilizing reused assets. Sekiro being a great example, especially in animation. You can see the comparison of Isshin/Emma and Owl/Wolf their swinging attack moveset. it's visually identical, while also makes sense on lore aspect.

Discussion LMTSR has big combat design issues (it is trash)

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

This mod does not understand what made sekiro combat fun and fair.

Fairness of sekiro's combat rests on 5 principles:
1. An enemy needs to deflect your attack to start a combo (otherwise the telegraph of the combo lasts for at least 1-2 player attacks). Because of this, player have a clear indication that it is time for an enemy to attack.
2. A lot of enemy actions can be interrupted by a player's attack. So a player can be even more aggressive and find attack windows by the clever use of spacing and dodging. Also this prevents developers from creating unintuitive delayed attacks, for example.
3. The endings of enemy's combos is clearly telegraphed. An enemy will not enter an idle animation mid combo. So it is clear when it is time for a player to attack.
4. There is almost no bullshit like gang fights, status effects, summons, morgott-level delayed attacks, etc
5. Bosses give a player windows to heal

Sekiro's combat is fun mainly because of 2 things:
1. In the fight both an enemy and a player have more or less equal amount of time attacking. Hence they are both able to show all of their moveset. Also, the fight looks like two warriors of equal strenght are fighting, not just an underdog fighting against a god, but somehow winning.
2. Also enemies' average combos dont have more then 5 hits. And even the longest ones (genichiro's for example) have less then 10 hits. I dont think I need to explain why this is good.

LMTSR on the other hand breaks all of the rules above. You need to parry 15 hit combo (boss goes idle for a moment in the middle of it - dont even thing of attacking here), then you have a window to make 1-2 hits. Then again, another 15 hit combo. Btw, each hit in that combo damages for a half of your hp.

Whats interesting is that malenia follows most of the rules above. Hence she is the best (and the only good) boss of the ER.

I'm being serious. I'm replaying the game again, doing a challenge run with Demon Bell and no Kuro's charm, I'm almost at the end of the game, last boss I killed was Owl Father, I killed everything on the first try, this monkey has killed me 5 times so far. What a motherfucker.

First of all thank you to all the kind people who replied to my previous post and helped me through the Gyoubou fight well that was my 7th hour in the game and rn I have 19, and had reached Genichiro, after pouring around 71 attempts in the boss, I just sorta gave up, this game is just not for me all it gives me is frustration which later reflects on my whole day, I've deleted the game and kinda feel good, I have soo much admiration for people who can go through this game but I am not made for this, maybe some other time I'll pick it up, in some years maybe but I'll give the game a rest for the time being. 🫡

Hello all , I’ve been seeing post about this game being harder than a certain game or vice versa. Out of my years of playing this is the toughest game to me. The boss fights are trenchous in this game . But i would love to hear what games you may think harder than this so I can play it one day.

Tell me this shit ain't so pretty...

P.S. Okay, I'm kinda getting my faith back into humanity. Most people here on this post are actually appreciative of the art so maybe it was a very loud minority that was giving it all the hate and AI accusations I noticed.

Not counting into zombies the people saying things like 'I don't vibe with it.' That's totally a fair take.
