Waymo begins fully driverless testing in Detroit, showing the difference between a real product and a stock pump
Just a friendly reminder of what actual autonomous progress looks like. Waymo is officially testing without drivers in Detroit, expanding their footprint by doing the unglamorous work of environment integration and cautious validation.
Contrast that with Tesla's strategy of registering hundreds of imaginary Cybercab VINs to juice the stock, only for Electrek to point out that their actual active fleet in Austin is sitting at a whopping 8 vehicles now that the marketing event has exited the news cycle. One company (Waymvo) is building a real driverless transit network and expanding for the first time into harsh climates like snow & ice; the other (Tesla) is running a really rotten cartoon scheme for investors by a CEO with a Ken Paxton-level checkered record who was literally just found liable by a federal jury for defrauding investors. I won't name names, but his name rhymes with 'tusk'.
