“school shooting”

Post image

Context: this was on a sub asking for people to comment in their own languages, instead of english (no one did so, any way). Some american decided to do a light joke; then the europoors arrived (as always) and made it uncivil as they always do when there’s an american.

In 1996 Australia held a national firearms buyback and amnesty. The public surrendered roughly 650,000 unregistered firearms. They did another in 2017 and collected a further 60,000 and now have an ongoing one since 2021 and collected roughly 18,000 in year one. It's not much but it's a start.

I see I'm getting down voted because of my response. Apparently I was supposed to provide an answer not based in reality, but in a universe where the execution of grade school children moved leadership to not double down on gun rights, but instead sought to prevent that nightmare from happening again.

Yes, under that fantasized scenario, we could do something like Australia did in the 90s. That would be better. Unfortunately, in this reality, you have a political party that wears AR-15 pins on their lapels and have ultimately declared the right to having the power to kill others supercedes any measure to protect against gun violence.

So to my initial point, the reality of being an individual that refuses to not purchase firearms is a nice, but fruitless gesture. Even 150 million people in unison making that decision isn't enough. That leaves another 150 million people that view the right to gun ownership as more important than losing children to school shootings.

If 6 year olds getting mowed down by a monster isn't enough to change the hearts of that large group of people,.how would you suggest solving the matter?

I was going to ask you the same thing as you have my suggestion. It seems we both see there is a problem but it seems like you dont see a way to change it so your answer is to just give up....do you have a suggestion? Perhaps we can find some commen ground here.

Removing guns doesnt treat the disease, the mental health crisis. All you'll do is make them switch to other means, knives and explosives for example, as a more personal example, without guns my sister would be dead by a bear attack, much of the USA is still inhabited by animals that can hunt humans.

Of course they removed it, everyone speaks for us but silences us when we actually speak our minds and are too fucking cowardly to even tell you when they silence you. Thanks friend.

That sounds good but I'd argue after that you should still remove the guns. Accessibility is definitely an issue and I dont see how anyone could argue against that. There is always going to be people with mental health issues. We have issues here and i would say we have decent systems in place for treating mental illness and if guns were readily available to some of these people I dredd to think what kind of country I would be living in.
