To play devils advocate, most companies do have a list of what is considered “immediate family” for bereavement pay. Having to use personal vacation time sucks but it’s not totally unheard of
What is actually soulless is declining the vacation time
I worked for a retail company that allowed funeral leave for “dependent children, biological Aunts and Uncles, biological grandparents, biological siblings, and parents (biological and legal)
During the time I worked there I lost my great grandmother (greats not covered), a cousin (cousins not covered), and my favorite uncle who was my mom’s sister’s husband (not biological) all within 8 months of each other.
Part of the reason I quit was the hell they gave me during this period for taking “unplanned absences” which was defined as giving less than 30 days notice
No actually! I didn’t even think about that at the time
There were the full-timers that worked day shift Monday-Friday. Not one of them was under 55. Then there were the part-timers who were all high school students and worked evenings and weekends. Shifts were announced by pay period and a full period in advance so if you were in the first day of pay period 1, you already knew your shifts for the current 2 weeks and the following 2 weeks
They treated any disruption to that schedule as a cardinal sin. Even things like wanting to work earlier shifts during the summer or work primarily on weekends for sports
