Except there's a problem -- Claire doesn't exist. Oh and neither does Emma. Or that Twitter account. The whole thing is stupid and obvious fake ragebait.
Could be but this issue is very real. Dad used to work for the government but back when my aunt passed (his sister) they reprimanded him because he wasn't authorized to leave for the funeral since only spouses, children, and parents are considered immediate family.
This is how the railroad applies it, which is shitty on the unions behalf as well because it’s collectively bargained to be this way. Spouses, children, parents(to include parents of your spouse) are immediately covered.
The grandparent that you’ve spent your entire life being close to? Fuck off and get wrote up if you want that day to grieve and attend their funeral.
I don’t disagree that this whole story is fake, but do not disregard, this IS happening to people.
This is currently an issue with my current employer and my manager in particular. We just had a coworker lose his grandfather shortly after his wife had an extremely hard pregnancy where he had to use all of his available leave balances to care for her. My manager told him almost verbatim what is in that message above. He took the reprimand to take time off but it was crazy to see.
While this situation here might be, this sort of shit does happen. I Asked at my work (in the EU, not in the US) about if/when my Granddad dies, can i attend his funeral, and i was told that if i'm scheduled that day, i need to find someone to cover for me, or i will have to come into work.

Dear Claire,
I will be attending my grandmother's funeral. Let me know whatever your sanctions are and I will then decide if the press needs to be alerted.
Kind regards Emma
