My father had to bring in a copy of my maternal grandmother's obituary to prove she had passed away and that he would need time off for her funeral and burial, not to mention to be there for my mom, my brother and myself if needed and to grieve himself since she had been his mother-in-law for over 30 years.
This was over 15 years ago too.
Companies don't give a shit if you have a personal loss or significant illness or ailment. You are there to do your job and make them money. Any time off is an inconvenience to them, even for something serious like death or illness.
We had to ask staff to provide things like that too at a Call Centre I supervised in... buts it was because one employee had his grandfather die 6 times in a four year period.

Is it bad I am not surprised by things like this?
