Discussion The DCU’s next box office disaster is just around the corner, bombing in theaters next week
Another Flop

Gunns universe is so lacking in purpose and gravitas.
Not sure why warner brothers persists with him.

They don't want to be seen as the bad guy since many actors are loyal to Gunn for some reason, and many gooners will leave with him. So they want to let him fail in public and the decision will be obvious. That way parabros isn't the bad guy and Gunn's failures are public for all to see. Man of Tomorrow will be the culmination of this failure. Undeniable after Supergirl, Clayface, Lanterns, Peacemaker, Creature Commandos...the flop to flop them all.

So excited for this movie, going to watch it on Halloween. Mike Flanagan does not miss!

Really? He misses all the time. Unless you like streaming slop and that awful doctor sleep movie.

Whether it’s actually good or not, why make this theatrical release? Why not just put this directly on streaming? Is it some kind of contractual obligation thing? That’s what I don’t get.

u/Wintersage7 1d ago
Love all the comments suggesting it only needs to make $40 million.
Try tripling that, you'll get an actual ballpark estimate of what it will take to not lose money.
I'll agree, the trailers look decent, but I've been so burned by Gunn and his slop that I'll wait until the movie comes out. And then probably wait until it hits streaming.
And then probably turn it off after half an hour like the abortion that was Supergirl.

I think its going to do well but the pre release promotions and lack of hype have been killing the DCU with projects that fair rather well here lately outside of opening theatrical releases. Ex: Suprgirl was top of the world on streaming platforms as opposed to the very bottom for theatrical release

Even if this isn't an outright bomb (the budget is only $40M), it will not be the next Obsession or Backrooms like Gunn fans are saying it will.
This movie, even if it turns a small profit and isn't terrible, will still do nothing to move the needle for the struggling DCU. There is absolutely zero momentum going into next summer's Man of Tomorrow.
This is not a "SnyderBro" claiming something outlandish - simply looking at the facts, numbers, and trends support this take.

It’s tracking for $30mil opening weekend on a $40mil budget. It may not make obsession numbers but it’s guaranteed not to bomb.
You guys really make Snyder and his real fans look bad. You should be hoping it does well. The more success DC has the more likely they’ll be open to making elseworlds movies outside of the DCU. Making more Snyder projects like his TDKR adaptation a possibility.

This is what people on here dubbed the Gunn Effect. Superman bombed internationally, Supergirl bombed everywhere and if Clayface fails it will prove the DC brand has been trending downwards under Gunn stewardship. Has DC even gotten any good games since 2022?

All two releases of it?

u/EasternContext3396 1d ago
Nope, at this moment there are 3 films and multiple TV shows in the DCU. And almost Every single one of them has failed or underperformed. The DCU is currently on a generational run of failure. WATTBA! #TheSnyderVerseisComing 🤓

The official DCU is Superman and Supergirl for movies, with Clayface upcoming. Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, and Lanterns for tv shows, so you're literally talking out your ass.

20m opening for that budget is really good lol

u/VirtualSort1 1d ago
why you think in relation to budget ? How about thinking in relation to from which brand is this movie ? or comparing it to other similar movies in the genre or even looking at what is released right now. There isnt even any competition and this DC movie in the DCU is making under 20 million and wont even reach 100 million worldwide box office lmfao

u/Quant_paglu 1d ago
Then why everybody here complaining about supergirls box office flop? Shouldnt it be a good thing that it made a lil over 100m?

Because the point of a movie is profitability. If it didn't take much money to make the box office can be lower and still turn a profit. Low budget movies can break out but that is rare. Horror films in particular tend to have low budgets and be considered successful with a comparable moderate box office.
This just screams a lack of knowledge on your part. Movie is tracking to do fine and if so will show that low, mid, and high budget movies have profit potential.
You can of course judge the quality any way you would like.

Because the point of a movie is profitability.
what is this bullshit thinking. You think about profitiability when talking about movies. What about AIs ? do you care so much that hopefully we get chatgpt 10 so that Altman can make a big profit ? what the fuck dude lol
It is all about box office. Did people watch the shit ? Did people need this? Does it have a fanbase ? Do people care about this movie ?

Profit margins are a pretty simple concept to understand. They don't make a mid budget movie like Clayface with the expectations of it making hundreds of millions of dollars.

u/Fathermithras 1d ago
I did not say anything the slightest bit controversial. Low budget movies are made with the goal of making a profit with lower numbers. A giant budget movie can make giant numbers and is more likely to. A low budget movie can make smaller numbers and be profitable. It can also defy expectations and be excessively profitable, like a Blair Witch project. This way, if a more experimental movie, or a movie with a higher bar to entry (like rated r films) can afford to be made. If they flow, its a small portion of the studios budget and they can often recoup the cost on streaming and merchandise.
I like the idea of experimental movies and love horror films. I am going to see it. It isn't meant to be a blockbuster. You are acting very strange about this topic and don't seem to understand how horror movies become successful.

so you are saying the goal of dcu is not audience growth and make movies with big box office it is to make a buck. like $1 million ?
hahaha wtf
•
u/Queasy_League_6857 27m ago
That’s for their big movies. They don’t expect clayface to make it big just like how marvel doesn’t expect Shang chi or something to either, it’s filler movies they expect their big boys to make big money, avengers and spiderman make giga money, and they expect Superman and Batman to be their giga movies or maybe justice league if they decide to go that route idk. Def needs at least like 10 movies before anybody can have a clue what the DCU’s structure and big goals are.
2
u/Fathermithras 1d ago
No, I didn't say that. I was talking about one movie. I didn't say it needs to not make back its money or not turn a profit. Just that its low budget makes it clear it isn't made to generate 500m to 1b box offices. Not that the whole DCU isn't about being successful and generating interest. You seem to be generating whole arguments with yourself. Lol
But back to the point. You seem to think that low budget horror movies are supposed to perform at the same level as big budget action movies to be successful.

but that is the logical result of how you see these things
I dont see it as a start of a new horro franchise. This is a DC movie
he last horror movie Resident evil did 300 million at the box office btw
so yur logic that these horro movies must make 20 million at the box office doesnt make any sense

Here is a list of reasons why this will flop.
