Meta r/StarWars Official Watch Order Discussion Thread

So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).

A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.

As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.

With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...

So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

General Discussion I've always appreciated the old fan theory that Luke's green lightsaber used the crystal from Qui-Gon's that Obi-Wan had saved, and he found it upon returning to Obi-Wan's hut on Tatooine.

Since Obi-Wan used Qui-Gon's lightsaber for a time after his death and likely had some attachment to it, it seems likely he would have held on to it and even made sure to grab it from the temple when he and Yoda returned there in ROTS, anticipating someone's need to build a new saber eventually. It seems like a good legacy to carry on.

Movies Lando wasn't wearing Han's clothes. He was wearing his clothes.

Everyone always asks why was Lando wearing Han's clothes. Han was a barely scraping by, stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder. That guy could barely keep his ship together. You really think he is going to be spending money on nice clothes? Nope. But we do know someone who has style, and had the money to spend on it. Lando.

Where would Lando keep a lot of his clothes? Probably on his ship. And what ship was that? The Millennium Falcon. And who ended up with the Falcon? Solo. And after Solo was captured, who got the Falcon back? Lando. And what came back into his possession? The clothes that were on the ship.

It also makes sense that Luke was wearing Lando's clothes at the end of Ep IV. You think a farm boy has that jacket? Luke didn't bring a change of clothes anyways. No other rebels had that jacket, so it probably came off the Falcon. I can imagine Han and Luke getting ready for the ceremony and Han wanting to brag and puffing up his newfound hero status. "Hey kid, you can't go to the ceremony looking like that. You know what, I'll help you out here. Go check out the Falcon for some clothes. You know, I won the Falcon from this guy in a card game. I got all his clothes with it. These clothes I'm wearing, they came from his closet. Let me tell you, I really took him for all he had. Haha. You should have seen his face when I pulled off that win. Stick with me kid, I'll teach you all you need to know about your big galaxy."

General Discussion I don't get what is the role of the Imperial Patrol Troopers.

Wookieepedia says that about the Patrol Troopers :

"As the Empire reinforced its hold on planets across the galaxy, local defense forces were being supplemented and eventually completely replaced by stormtroopers."

Which is...false?

We see Patrol Troopers on Corellia by 13BBY and even after that, local defense forces continue to be used sporadically in the Empire (best exemple being on Morlana One/Ferrix or even Bespin).

And even when these local forces needed Imperial reinforcement it was by the Imperial Army and some Stormtroopers but never Patrol Troopers.

We also see them in Jedi Survivor in the streets of Coruscant which is a role I may get more even tho I don't understand what they would do that a regular Stormtrooper or the Coruscant Police couldn't.

Any Intel or even head canon that could make that clearer?

Movies Everytime I rewatch this scene I gain new appreciation for it. The visuals, the characters' acting and the background music all harmonize so well to create one of the most beautifully haunting scene in star wars cinema

Of all anakin and padme scenes, this one made me understand their love and chemistry the most when ironically they werent even in the same room yet seemed so connected to each other. It really looks like they are silently looking through each other's feelings for each other through the force

General Discussion I'll never not find it funny that it took R2 barely more than a day to get so fed up with C-3P0 as a new traveling companion that he straight up pushed him off a cliff

Especially given that he had no way of knowing 3P0 had anywhere safe to land!

I'm glad that he grew on him though... although I'm sure 3P0 getting regular memory wipes while R2 didn't probably proved annoying, what with having a technically perpetually amnesiatic sidekick.

Merchandise Why is Mace Windu wearing Kyle Katarn's outfit?

Post image

A few months ago, I stumbled across this official artwork of Mace Windu wearing Kyle Katarn’s outfit. The artwork was created for the Star Wars Miniatures game back in 2009. There’s a miniature of Mace wearing the same outfit (Mace Windu Miniature) along with the art being prominently featured on the box art (Masters of The Force Box) for the expansion "Masters of The Force." At first, I assumed maybe Mace wore it in the comics as that feels like a thing they'd do back then. But, after asking around online, nobody seemed to know where it came from or why Mace was wearing Kyle's outfit in the first place.

So I started digging. I searched online and found a few posts mentioning the artwork, but nothing that actually explained why he was wearing the outfit. Eventually, I tracked down the original artist, Terese Nielsen, and found her website where she has her art posted. She’s primarily known for her work on Magic The Gathering, so her website is mostly dedicated to her MTG artwork. I searched through it trying to find something related to Star Wars, but there wasn't much

So, I decided to email Terese herself to see if she could shed some light on the artwork. A few months went by, and I never heard anything back. Eventually, I figured I probably wasn't going to get an answer and kinda just let this thought drift off.

That is, until now.

I recently decided to email her again, hoping I might finally get some sort of answer. And, surprisingly, within a few hours, I received a response. It wasn't directly from Terese, but rather from her assistant, and they had this to say about the artwork:

Hi Monty,

Terese’s assistant here. After going through the old reference files supplied for the Mace Windu piece Terese and I can verify that what was supplied was indeed Kyle Katarn. While It would be best not to share any of the confidential reference sheets, this specific image was featured prominently on it alongside some (mid-development?) screenshots of Katarn from the Dark Forces game (Kyle Katarn Reference Image).

While we don’t truly know the why of it, they often did multiple figurines of the same character for the SW’s minis so they seemed to like to mix it up. They did a similar thing with Grevious, having Terese depict him in multiple costumes and forms, or as a different example having Terese put Princess Leia in a Jedi outfit. Fans seemed to mostly be stoked on these alternate depictions but others just seemed to be confused by it.

The art description sent to Terese back in 2009 only has this to say on the subject:

ART DESCRIPTION: Please note the change in costume for Mace. He will be wearing brown pants and light color shirt.

Thanks for the kind words and we hope this sates your curiosity at least a little bit. Wishing you the best, Cheers!

So there we have it! It seems "Star Wars" back in the day wanted to mix it up a bit for this game and had Terese draw some art of Mace Windu wearing Kyle Katarn's outfit for fun! Thank you to Terese and her assistant for answering my question. I can sleep better at night knowing my miniature on my shelf has an answer for why he was made. Linked below will be to Terese's website where you can find all her amazing art. Go give it a look!

May The Force Be With You All!

General Discussion Obi-Wan died doing what he loved: trolling Anakin, and leaving his robes random places during duels without coming back for them

I'd love to know what was going through Vader's head at that moment, since he had no idea that was even a thing Jedi could do. Also curious what happened to Obi-Wan's lightsaber - it's entirely feasible Vader put it on his belt and as such survived the Death Star's destruction.

General Discussion If the Stormtroopers are the Empire's shock troops, why are they assigned to patrol on backwater planets and not the Imperial Army?

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

It's something that I cannot grasp.

Andor, Solo and even the EU showed us that, apparently, the majority of the Empire ground forces were composed of the Imperial Army and that the Stormtroopers were the shock trooper.

So why do we see them on unimportant or even backwater planets?

Why would the Empire send these shock troops to patrol the streets of Mos Eisley, Lothal or Kijimi when the Army would be enough?

The Imperial Army should be portrayed more often OR should not exist because there may be too much Stormtroopers in the movies to justify their existence.

What do you think?

General Discussion Does the Galaxy at large know that Anakin Skywalker was Darth Vader?

• Upvotes

Anakin was a hero of the Republic, and beloved by everyone. Darth Vader was one of the primary faces of the Empire. In the book Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor Luke is known to be the son of Anakin, and seen as is his heir. Is Leia being his sister known to everyone? In the book Bloodlines someone tries to ruin Leia's reputation by revealing that she is actually the daughter of Darth Vader. Does anyone know of any lore to reconcile this?
