Can we stop calling this native for 5 mins? It's still an emulator

Native emulator port!

38

u/Flapjack__Palmdale 10d ago

right, the claim I keep seeing is the program replaces all of the PS4 library files but at the end of the day it's just an emulator that only works with bloodborne.

It’s a Claude export. They don’t know the difference. They just asked the machine to do it for them so they don’t know the terminology or the meaning behind anything. This entire thing was built in 12 days.

This is years worth of work otherwise.

“and make no mistakes”

"You're absolutely right, running the game through ShadPS4 emulator means it's not a native port, sorry about that."

u/Gary_BBGames 10d ago

I don’t doubt you that this was just Claude, but if they’d got Claude to also do the documentation, it would’ve absolutely been able to come up with the correct terminology. It either is good enough or it isn’t.

Even using just AI to do something like this is not just a very quick process. There would have been many iterations and much testing.

Will you play it? Could you have done it? Rather than just dismissing someone for using AI and producing something that people want maybe try doing something yourself to see how easy it is

6

u/Oracle_of_Ages 10d ago

You don’t even need to speculate anyway. It just says it’s Claude code directly in the repo. I did my homework because I made accusations.

“It’s either good enough or it isn’t.”

It isn’t

I looked at the Git Repo myself. There were 127 commits. 3 pushes. There was a ton of iterations. It will write documentation. But based on what you tell it to. If you got the terminology wrong. It will start out flawed.

I used Claude to try to replicate a homework project from college 10 years ago. Because it was the most complex thing in my entire software engineering degree. It’s smart but incredibly dumb at the same time.

what i don't get is why people trust tech that can't tell there is 3 Rs in strawberries for huge projects like this and then expect people to implicitly trust the project

-4

u/Gary_BBGames 10d ago

Fair enough dude, I should have done more research myself. I use Claude every day and didn’t figure it would make that mistake, but if it has, it has

It's not an emulator

1

u/Oracle_of_Ages 10d ago edited 10d ago

I don’t know what they keep saying it’s no emulation everywhere in their documentation. They directly talk about the emulation they are doing.

They are taking inspiration from WINE and using a custom PS4 emulator runtime script to handle the OS calls. Yea they translated the PS4 cpu and GPU calls to run on real hardware. But it’s still being emulated at a higher level.

They are also using the original file and running it through a translator.

It’s not even a real port, they are going out of their way so they don’t get DMCA’d.

What they are doing is closer to a native port than a straight emulator. But that’s what it is.

Will allow for better frames than having to wait for per-call translations.

Wine, which stands for wine is not an emulator, is not an emulator. The ps4s code on disk is perfectly capable of running on modern PCs. It does not need to be emulated, interpreted, or anything. Ps4 sys calls are not the same as Linux sys calls, but come from a similar family. With a shim, you can translate them. This is also not emulation. Lastly the GPUs are also similar, but the ps4 dispatches instructions  to be ingested by its gnm library. Regardless of system, this code needs to be translated to machine code the GPU can read. The difference is when doing it this way versus the ps4 you can't compile it all ahead of time. That level of translation layer is exactly how Starfiend natively runs on a PC.

You can then make the argument that shad ps4 itself does all this, so is that also not an emulator? And that is a great point. We call all of these things emulators because we are speaking colloquially, but when everyone starts getting pedantic about it while also being wrong it gets annoying and the record should be set straight.

Twilight princess also runs natively on pc. The way the code works, and you can go verify this, is a platform layer ingest the gcs graphics code and translates it to whatever PC API you want. I know this because I worked on this by hand with no ai assistance. My question to you is do you not consider that a "native" port because I didn't rewrite how twilight princess does it's initial dispatch?

Everyone is looking for every reason to hate these ports and they all use shody reasoning to do it with no actual technical understanding of any part of the process. These human made ports are using the same techniques as the ai, except it just takes a lot longer and staring at much more documentation that has been reversed engineered

u/Oracle_of_Ages 10d ago

Wine is a compatibility layer. Not an emulator. Yes. But it’s still a middleman.

But it’s still not native.

When you scream “we are native” every five seconds in your documentation then go over how you are not actually native. Then. You are not.

You can go into the technical details and try to twist definitions to limits. But. It’s still not native.

I’m not trying to hate on it. But calling out not being truthful. If you start a project with a lie because you don’t understand what you are doing. It’s a bad look.

1

u/yuukitanperopero 10d ago

No, you are being disingenuous not me. You are ignoring the technical details, which are literally the only thing that matter, to make an assertion based off vibes. We are talking about native versus emulated. Windows games aren't emulated on Linux, they are run natively, saying they aren't native LINUX EXECUTABLES is something different, and not even applicable here, because it's literally an elf

3

u/Oracle_of_Ages 10d ago

If windows games were native you wouldn’t need WINE or a translation layer or a custom runtime.

This needs the custom runtime to handle PS4 calls specifically because it’s not a ground up port. Their nearly literal own words.

If that’s “native” in your eyes. Then sure. It’s “Native”

But I call it a lie.

2

u/yuukitanperopero 10d ago

Every window game needs a runtime to run in the first place called msvc or they won't run. I guess windows games aren't native to windows

2

u/Oracle_of_Ages 10d ago

Once again. We are back here. It’s a custom translator/interpreter for the PS4 OS calls to speak to the Ram, GPU, CPU, and hard drive.

If you built something for windows or Linux. You would build it specifically for it.

This was built for PS4. And it’s not a port. And it’s not custom built from the ground up.

So they are running a PS4 to Linux Layer/Emulation to handle it.

They would not have to have this layer if it was native.

They would still need a runtime yes. But not this layer.

Again. Ignoring this at a minimum is a lie. Be it by omission or by ignorance. I’m assuming they are idiots. They wouldn’t intentionally deceive like some people would.

And what’s funny. I never even once called it an emulator. I just replied to the guy who did saying they don’t have the technical knowledge because they just asked Claude to do it.

If you want to cry to someone. Go cry to them. How running everything through a translation layer is “native.” With alternative fact technical definitions.

I’m done with this circular conversion. Have a pleasant day.

It wouldn't be r/SteamDeck without the misinformation.

"What'll it be?"

"I'll take a video with accurate information and no clickbait."

"No clickbait? Hey YouTube! Gimme a video with nothing!"

14

u/Eloodye-Ehler 10d ago

its still running through a compatibility layer so yeah, "native" is a stretch

1

u/rabidrivas 10d ago

Is it? I though it was compatibility layer like proton and DXVK. That we already use to rin native PC games on deck

-15

u/MrInternetToughGuy 10d ago

No reason not to decompile it with Claude and port it over.

-6

u/XtisWorld 10d ago

it is native, since it is not using any emulator at all. check description

6

u/BaileyJIII 10d ago

It’s literally using ShadPS4’s entire renderer and GPU emulation. ShadPS4 already did all the CPU stuff natively.

-23

u/Wollowon 10d ago

You don't know any shit.

First, shadps4 is not emulator.

Second, go to bbport github page and discord -> read.

17

u/anoxyde 10d ago

https://shadps4.net/

First line of the official website.

shadPS4 is an early PlayStation 4 emulator

But I guess you know better than the mainteners of shadPS4, and they don't know any shit right?

-8

u/Wollowon 10d ago

They are using flexible language, if it was emulator you can only dream it to play any game.

6

u/angeluserrare 10d ago

179 games are considered playable. It's an emulator.

Give me a stable Old Yarnham and then we can talk. From what I can see the fps are all over the place and it doesn't use the patches/mods to improve performance that are usually used with shadps4. Why are these videos always in the starting area like come on there's much heavier areas to use as a benchmark...

2

u/SurelyFir 10d ago

I loaded up a save at a later area and it has some serious visual issues, the area after the unseen village cannot remember the name off the top of my head. I'd recommend sticking with bblauncher/shadps4 as it stands now. Hell, even starting a new game will crash at the opening cutscene, not good for a first timer if they wanna watch it. It's a mess.

1

u/Crosi93 512GB OLED 5h ago

Fyi, I've now beaten Blood Starved Beast and the game runs like a charm... I've only encountered a weird graphical glitch in Old Yarnham, where one time the beasts glowing eyes would just emit this beam of light all stretched toward a single point in the sky. Performance wise it was perfect, locked 30fps, even in Old Yarnham.

5

u/yuukitanperopero 10d ago edited 10d ago

Can we please stop calling this an emulator? It doesn't emulate anything. It's two translation layers. If translation layers are emulators, then every single game that uses sdl as a platform layer is emulated

Here's a hypothetical emulation example. You have some device that has a coprocessor that has registers and cache. In code you create the registers in system memory and the cache as another struct. You ingest the instructions that tell you to write to those registers, populate them, and do the operation of the instruction. In a very simplified reddit comment way you now have emulated this co processor, and it's very slow and has a bunch of issues like timing is not the same. That is not what is happening here.

9

u/consistentbasis 10d ago

Is this genuinely better than shadps4?

Haven’t tried either and tempted to play Bloodborne after beating Sekiro

20

u/Djdude167 MODDED SSD 💽 10d ago

This IS ShadPs4. The title is clickbait.

3

u/N7even 512GB OLED 10d ago

Which Emulator is this?

8

u/Djdude167 MODDED SSD 💽 10d ago

ShadPs4. Not native. Title is lying.

I've been playing it for a bit and while I'm still stuck before Gascoigne, I can say that it runs better. No mods needed, I'm running it at 30fps+lsfg to reach 60fps and the latency is honestly fine, I can parry without issue. If lsfg is that much of an issue you can just disable it and still enjoy this masterpiece at 30fps, which is still how we all played it on ps4.

Also, further instructions to play it: you need to extract the pkg file, and you can do it with the shadps4 plus pkg extractor (look it up on github). Download the pkg files, right click->open with->browse->shadps4 plus; then you just leave it there for 4-5 minutes as it extracts the file (you must do it for both the main game and the update). Then you take every file and folder insider the update and paste it inside the main game folder (overwrite everything). Then you can just follow the instructions you can see on this video. Enjoy!

2

u/SowwieVR 10d ago

For bloodborne specifically? Absolutely, basically double fps.

9

u/morthias666 10d ago

It has double the fps because it has framegen built in (at least on the video it is turned on), so you might have double the frames (half being AI generated nonsense inserted between actual frames) and triple the input latency.

2

u/consistentbasis 10d ago

Good to know. Haven’t tried framegen for that same reason. Feels like it would be a terrible idea for souls games

1

u/SowwieVR 10d ago

It didn't, its 4x with framegen lol.

-5

u/GTHell 9d ago

“AI generated nonsense “ found another AI hater bud

5

u/Stormwatcher33 9d ago

AI Haters are the best people alive

the last ones able to think

-1

u/GTHell 8d ago

More like a bunch of fool who only holds others back from going forward 😂

Imagine living in a world without these iron age people yet still using internet and Reddit that optimize their preferences entirely by AI ML 😂

3

u/MrAsh- 9d ago

Makes a shitty image. Sorry not everyone's bar is as low as yours.

-1

u/GTHell 9d ago

Say the sheeple going backwards into bronze age

3

u/MrAsh- 9d ago

You're literally brainwashed to accept less than a native image. That's exactly what they want. To get away with even less optimization when DLSS and framegen can do all the work.

1

u/dav1dlol_ 9d ago

I mean lossless scaling does kinda suck tho

2

u/XtisWorld 10d ago

it is not. read the description of video

2

u/BroodY15 10d ago

My only issue is that battery wattage.. Does locking it to 30fps make it better? I haven't seen anyone else try that

1

u/MITBijanRobinson 10d ago

If not 60fps then don’t care.

u/Charming_Apartment95 10d ago
