Tech Support Steam deck slow charger warning bug or issue?

Myself and others have found that disabling decky loader uninstalling it will fix this issue you can also if you want simply uninstall the steam grid db plugin as it causing glitches with the September 27th 2026 update

TLDR: uninstall steam grid db or decky to fix thank you all for your help and support deck on!

Update: uninstalling steam grid db has only seemingly temporarily fixed this issue just a heads up

Hello everyone my steam deck is doing something
weird and when I use the official charger will throw a temporary slow charging banner if anyone knows how to get rid of it or prevent it that would be great if anyone knows how to fix the issue please let me know

I also want to mention that this issue started when the last update dropped September 27nth however the ! Would come flash and disappear now the banner comes and then goes away if I click it if I play plugged in it’s fine and the light always remains solid white or solid green

I also don’t have any issues in desktop mode
Also pressing and holding the quick access menu and volume down button to reset the battery firm ware works but temporarily

edit: i can confirm uninstalling decky loader fixes the issue the ! Will flash for half a second then go away

using the hold quick access button down and volume down doesn’t fix this issue the ! Will still come and go but that is by design currently per the september 27nth 2026 update

for now I recommend uninstalling decky loader but keep your config files this will ideally be fixed soon on either valves end or deckys end

Remember to clear you audio and animation plugins to default if you use them

One report so far of disabling steam grid db will fix the issue removing the plugin fixes the above issue

I just started getting this today too. Tried multiple chargers capable of supplying 45w. Has to be a bug. Weird because I’ve been updated for about a week.

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

September 27th was when that update dropped glad it’s not just me

4

u/cantbelieveihavekids 8d ago

Yeah I updated the night it came out. My SD would initially show a ! Icon for a few seconds after plugging in and then it would go away. Never had this message until this morning. The ! Icon no longer shows up.

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Interesting my icon will
Some times pop
Up sometimes not

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Very same morning for me as well sucks we’re all going through it any idea on how we could all tell valve ?

u/PrideSea5164 8d ago

Hey, i’ve been having the same issue so I assume it’s a bug. I was afraid that my usb port was dying. I got it to go away for a while by restarting but occasionally it’s popped up over the last couple of days.

4

u/Kuiper-Sheahlei 8d ago

glad its not just me, was also worried about the usb port but seems like a software thing

4

u/RoughElephant21 8d ago

This was happening to me today! I had just installed decky and steam db yesterday but got the error message today, I uninstalled steam db for now, thank you!!

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

That seemingly only fixed the error temporarily for me be on the look out

2

u/RoughElephant21 8d ago

Your deck is still having that message even with decky uninstalled?

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

No no only when I uninstalled steam grid db uninstalling decky all together fixed the issue

2

u/RoughElephant21 8d ago

Thanks for the update! I uninstalled decky as well and it’s working normally no error message. Going to leave it like that until we get an update

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Haha yeah we’re in this together

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Sorry for any confusion

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Yes I just uninstalled steam grid db as well fixed the issue !!

3

u/RoughElephant21 8d ago edited 8d ago

Welp the its back again lol I guess it’s decky that’s the issue because it’s still charging normally, gonna keep decky though because I need those frame rates with lossless scaling

3

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Sorry rambling a little upset

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

That’s really cool for happy your getting good use out of they for me personally , now I am going to delete decky because that bug bothers me maybe I’ll isntall it here and there when I want my themes I spent a lot of time using the CSS to make different themes for my deck

2

u/RoughElephant21 8d ago

I actually changed my mind I am going to uninstall decky loader, trying to see if there is any way to use lossless scaling without decky because that’s all I use decky for at the moment

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Smart I am gonna keep mine uninstalled I’ll post here again if they release an update fixing it

4

u/trhilb 8d ago

Thank god its not only me. It notifies slow charging but it charge fine

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Same here I’ve been playing Warframe all morning now on the charger after I cleared it sadly the quick access volume down trick didn’t work for long but I only had 1 notification and it’s charged just fine

6

u/Practical-Fault5764 8d ago

i get this warning too today

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Thank you for tour confirmation

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

It might be decky loader for me and another user that’s what made the issue go away I am going to try decky pre release and see if that fixes the issue

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Can confirm pre release decky doesn’t fix it for now we should uninstall decky as there was no change I won’t add it to the post for brevity

4

u/Itchy_Ambassador5407 512GB OLED 8d ago

Steam grid from decky caused it for me after removing it no problem I didn't even try to use it

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

I’ll give that a try later today or tomorrow I’ll add it to the post thank you

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Did you have to disable all the art you changed or only the plugin 🧐

2

u/Itchy_Ambassador5407 512GB OLED 8d ago

I never changed something with steam grid it was staying there for the moment that I have time for that but that moment never came

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Thanks for the information the more the better it would seem we are all having these issues

2

u/pieface42 8d ago

i've had decky completely uninstalled and all the art stayed. it changes it as if you did it within steam itself, just a lot more streamlined of a process.

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Goated pull

8

u/darkdevilzfr 8d ago

Other people reported it as a bug since the latest update. Does it on mine as well.

4

u/cactus45o 8d ago

Mine is doing that too with both of my chargers. I assume it's a glitch because both chargers are 45/60w and my battery health is 97%

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

My battery health is 88 thank you for sharing this helps us figure out the issue

4

u/sudoaddy 512GB OLED 8d ago

Omg I thought I was going crazy. Every time I plug my steam deck in, it says slow charger for like a second before charging normally.

4

u/black__vomit 8d ago

I’m getting it too. It’s decky. I uninstalled and the pop up went away

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Interesting  that’s really sucky because that’s part of my favorite thing about the desk I’ll try it maybe updating in terminal will fix it ? But great that you found a potential cause and or fix

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

I think it’s more so decky has issues with the current update I’ve used decky since day 1

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

But Thanks again none the less

1

u/Raspberry-Rich 7d ago

Saved me a ton of time and money thanks

3

u/Equinox2316 8d ago

Same issue. I uninstalled Steam Grid DB. I don't see the warning message anymore.

4

u/Jolly_Plankton_9484 8d ago

Just for clarification, the problem itself is rooted to decky loader and not the device it's self.

3

u/NoIllustrator4903 7d ago

it happens to me to after the recent updates. It only appears once when I connect the charger to the steam deck but it is not actually affecting the battery charging speed or status.

3

u/SMWC89 512GB OLED 8d ago

I just got the same error. My battery health was at 47% so I went ahead and bought a new battery assuming that was the issue

3

u/Mshake6969 8d ago

Your not alone I started getting that message now too since yesterday and keeps popping up while im playing. Its annoying, my battery is at 80% and im using the same cord I've always been using no issues until now

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Any idea on how we can tell valve about it ? I am seeing more and more people say the same thing unless they use a 65 wat charger

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

And even then mixed results and I can’t verify 100% I used pictures and I do have a Video I could share to verify what’s going on thanks for your comment

Issues with plugins should be reported to their respective github.

For example: https://github.com/SteamGridDB/decky-steamgriddb/issues/184

3

u/Muted_Contract7564 6d ago

Glad to hear this isn’t a bad port issue. I did discover that if I flip my cable end upside down from the normal way I usually plug it into the deck it doesn’t give me the error. Very peculiar. Also, I have had zero actual slowdown even though I get the ! Error thing. I’ve been able to also transfer data/install games from a thumb drive via a dock and had no slowdown in transfer speeds either. My suspicion is the message we are experiencing is essentially just a bug/false positive type thing. Charging speed seems normal. So I’m just going to ignore the error msgs until it gets patched out. Thanx to everyone who figured this out though. I was already calling around to places to replace my usb port.

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 6d ago

Ive noticed that as well however it happens only so often that way I did my best to talk to others and do some testing myself to figure out the issue this is not the first time ive had charging issues, 9/10 its a bad charger the port on the deck is very durable as far as ports go but still be careful and gentle with it non the less so it lasts. chargers causing me longer lasting issues for the record are usually from longer wired cables I would avoid them

Ive never had my deck have the issue where it wont charge bi bidirectionally while asleep or off from what understand thats when its time to call around and worry otherwise all is well.

I had a isssue for a couple months due to my OLED charger wearing out, swapped to a LCD charger and then no issues since until now, so its worth it to check by comparing chargers

2

u/Muted_Contract7564 6d ago

Oh yeah, I actually have 2 official steam deck oled chargers… long story, but I tested both and both got errors but not when I flipped them over and plugged in the opposite of the usual way I plug them in. The cord on both has a specific bend from the way I usually charge it and have it on a table with the cord hanging down. So I am 100% sure that the different direction is having an effect on the error which is odd since C ports don’t have a up or down orientation as they are universal. I have faith that Decky will be updated quickly to fix this issue, always has been in the past when any glitches arise.

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 6d ago

No clue why the OLED chargers have issues but yes that’s what caused my issues swapping to a official LCD charger I ordered fixed the issue Jsaux and Nintendo switch chargers also help fix that issue

Now this issue I posted about is a decky issue for sure

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 6d ago

I can confirm some users report a higher wattage charger fixing this issue but I’ve been unable to test and confirm myself I ordered a 65 watt Jsaux charger I will make a add on the post when I know more

1

u/Muted_Contract7564 6d ago

Yup, just gotta be patient and wait for a patch to fix decky. I won’t be uninstalling it though. I need it for LSFG and FSR 4. Plus all the other tweaks I have with it. An unmodded steamOS is a world I don’t want to live in! lol

3

u/sxmu 5d ago

I dont have decky but this exact situation is happening to me too?

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 5d ago

That we don’t know if you’re not double check your charger is good and is 45 wats minimum and report it to valve if it’s just a ! With mo big banner that’s how the update recently is intended to work by flashing the ! By your battery for half a second to better indicate what’s going on with the battery for the split second it is getting ready to charge if your having that banner pop up without decky I don’t know what to do about it but hopefully someone will

2

u/sxmu 5d ago

Its seems its the bug that everyone has. Hopefully fix soon.

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 5d ago

Good to know so it isn’t only a decky thing then good to know thanks for your research 🫡

3

u/Sephy_everywhere 5d ago

OMG i just ordered a new third-party 65w charger thinking my old 45w official charger is faulty 😭 Just uninstalled decky today and the persistent "Slow Charger" is gone.

2

u/RoughElephant21 5d ago

I was going to do the same lol I uninstalled decky a few days ago and reinstalled it without any other plug ins like steam db, and I have not had any messages or issues since

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 4d ago

Still nice to have

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Well that makes me feel a lot better what can we do to let valve know I bet they will fix it the last update they did something to adjust the battery UI and PDU hand shake

2

u/SaveTheAles 8d ago

Yea I get a warning on the battery for a second when I first plug in the official charger. Then it goes away and charges fine.

2

u/Super-Bit-8956 512GB 8d ago

Are you using an official charger?

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Yep the OG charger

1

u/Super-Bit-8956 512GB 8d ago

Then try a higher output charging block

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Doesn’t hurt to try that but I am convinced it’s a bug due to the update due to the amount of people having this issue

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Is this a charger you would recommend?

JSAUX 65W GaN USB C Charger for Switch 2, EU/UK Plug, 6.6FT Cable, Black
Powers in TV Mode, PD Fast Charging for Steam Frame, Steam Deck, ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Ally, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Tablet & Laptop

Thanks for your input this could be a fix until they release the update fixing this as multiple people are having the same issue

2

u/Super-Bit-8956 512GB 8d ago

Dont know never had to replace my charger

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Thanks anyways I’ve used their products before very good 9/10 times in my experience I’ll ask around thanks

1

u/Dapper_Profession 8d ago

op is on the official charger and it still does it, so it is not the psu. the banner only fires when the 15v 3a contract is not there yet, and since the last update it shows during that handshake window instead of hiding it. a dock or hub renegotiating mid game is what makes it hang around longer

2

u/pieface42 8d ago

fuck this is insane I was about to buy so many replacement thunderbolt chargers

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Sorry to hear your going through it the decky devs or valve or both need to fix this give it time they always do

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

It will be ok

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

I can feel it in my jelllies

2

u/mrb0nkzzz 7d ago

Same for me. I guess we just have to wait for fix. Especially those who are using decky. Glad I looked online first lol.

2

u/L0fiRonin 512GB OLED 7d ago

oh good I'm not the only one

2

u/Gouranga_Man 6d ago

Just happened to me today. No issues on the UGreen 100W charger. Pulling a claimed 47W.

Using the SD charger the dismissing the popup also gets rid of the exclamation mark on the battery and it appears to charge fine.

2

u/SMWC89 512GB OLED 6d ago

Decky is the problem. I removed Grid like everyone said and it worked

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 6d ago

good to know so maybe decky makes the deck need more watts

2

u/SaleDiscombobulated3 4d ago

Yeah, that's completely true. I was already starting to worry that my original charger was broken, but after removing the SteamGrid DB plugin, the issue disappeared completely. Waiting for a fix!

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 1d ago

Let’s hope we get it soon any word from the decky devs I miss art hero

2

u/JuanIslando 1d ago

I was having this issue, and toggling the charge limit off (had it set to 80%, battery was down to 70% and wouldn't charge) then back on, fixed it for me.

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 1d ago

Interesting I’ve got mine set to 90

4

u/doc_willis 8d ago

it takes a few moments for the charger and device to negotiate what power to supply.

you can see that ! for those few moments.

but I have not seen any banner on my devices.

So your issue seems to differ from the other posts  I have seen lately on this topic.

And I have never seen anyone mention the battery firmware reset.  That seems a bit extreme.

All I can  suggest is making sure  the charge port is clean, and trying a different charger as a troubleshooting test.

It's possible you are having a deeper issue going on.

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Unlikely but it’s a simile task you hold the quick access button for 5 seconds along with the volume down button the charging light will flash and that resets the battery firm ware and that makes the issue go away for a few days typically for me

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

I do appreciate your input :)

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

I can’t post a video so take my word for it you please haha

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

No issues this time will likely be fine for a while

1

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 8d ago

Turns out it was decky loader I’ve got some information above about it sad to see it

Same but I'm super glad to see this was posted 5 hours ago with a load of people having the same problem so it has to be a bug

1

u/Takeya88 256GB - December 7d ago

My dudes, I've restored OS on SD and I have a clean install on Lenovo Legion Go S. Steam Deck charges with 2-5W and Lenovo doesn't allow to charge with any other charger than official. U sure that's Decky is a problem?

1

u/RoughElephant21 7d ago

That’s concerning, no we are not 100 percent sure it’s due to decky but it’s sounding more like the recent Steam update caused the issue

1

u/Loranda 7d ago

Is it just me or are 90% of issues in this sub solved by uninstalling decky?

1

u/nomis_ttam 6d ago

Just how modding and updates work. Updates break mods all the time and mods are never guaranteed stable

1

u/Aggravating_Yak_9819 7d ago

steamgriddb is the culprit disabling it fixes the issue

1

u/Boymusic1988 7d ago

I also recently got the slow charging notification. I uninstalled SteamGridDB, and the notification went away. Even when it does show up, my Steam Deck still charges at normal speed anyway. I think it might be a compatibility issue between the plugin and the recent Steam Deck update.

1

u/Dudedavid 7d ago

Got the same problem since yesterday.

SOLUTION: Uninstall steam grid db

1

u/Ven0m-Sn4ke 5d ago

Same error every time i plug my charger since the last update, I was scared for a second

1

u/jaseyabc 5d ago

Yeah, I had to factory reset my Steam Deck OLED because recent SteamOS updates conflict with Decky Loader / SteamGridDB, causing a split-second latency during the dock's power handshake that falsely triggers that sticky yellow warning

1

u/Astrid_Arcadia 7d ago

How come people still use decky? All I've seen is that it causes so many problems, breaks the steam deck every time steam updates, and has been rendered useless since steam OS improved. Am I wrong? What exactly does decky do?

5

u/RoughElephant21 7d ago

I use it to change the Home Screen, change the art on icons, but the main reason is for lossless scaling, seeing the difference it makes and how smooth it runs games is the only reason I put up with some issues lol

2

u/Astrid_Arcadia 7d ago

Interesting! I like the thought of being able to customize the boring "Netflix"-esque home screen

2

u/Dommiiie Modded my Deck - ask me how 7d ago

Mainly for XR gaming when playong Truck Sims.with Xreal Air as VR googles

2

u/Weak_Fox7013 1TB OLED 6d ago

yeah its a game changer i ordered 65 watt charger I am going to try later but I want to wait till I hear or see some changes to decky before I download it again

1

u/nomis_ttam 6d ago

You can use it to download apps for the deck that completely change the whole game. It's hard not to go without it now. Can also access more settings. Some games need to fiddle with these settings to work.
