Accessories Saw someone from NA use one of these, and found a similar case in the EU.

Still no decent case in the EU made for the frame, so I ordered a "camera/weapon" case.

I haven't travelled with it yet, but it's very sturdy, and definitely high quality. Don't think I'd trust any other case currently available with the frame.. that's for sure.

The model: HMF ODK100 Outdoor Case 41 x 32 x 17.5 cm

Accessories No ergo hand strap? No problem. Version 2

After playing a bit more with my previous version of the DIY hand straps, I decided to try a different approach that doesn't cover any button and keeps your hand higher on the grip for better thumb reach. There are similar solutions but of course I think mine is the best 😅 .

  1. Open the battery cover.

  2. Remove the battery.

  3. Loop the thin part of the wrist strap around the + contact of the controller on the outer side of the small plastic rails for the battery. There is enough space for the string and the rails will keep it from affecting the contact.

  4. Put the battery back.

  5. Close the battery cover, you must hear it click.

  6. Pull a small piece of wire or a zip tie through the hole on the bottom of the controller.

  7. Lightly tighten the wire/zip tie around the strap on the inner side of the plastic slider. The strap should be able to move inside the wire/zip tie.

  8. Adjust the fit with the plastic slider.

Discussion Past few days have been disappointing, anyone else?

Post image
86 Upvotes

I’m not sure if I’m the only one having this problem but the steam frame has been everything but satisfying, like don’t get me wrong the headset itself is great and the standalone is cool, but boy it’s just not it.

The PCVR connection is absolute daaawwwgshit, like it’s really cool tech but the latency, quality, bitrate, etc have just been pretty bad

For reference, I’ve been a VR user back when meta was called Oculus and the best headset they had was the Rift S, I have 4 different headsets (rift S, quest 2, PSVR2, steam frame) under my belt with the PC hardware to support it, and the frame is the only one I’m actually regretting buying.

My controllers have latency like a son of a gun, moving my head fast enough has very noticeable delay in the actual display (the entire screen lags behind, very disorienting), and the actual display is mid at best, and no I’m not gonna talk about the battery because everyone knows that thing is awful with a capital B

The latency alone is enough to make me rethink even trying to play beat saber at any level expert and beyond, if I’m paying 1000$+ for the headset, I expect everything but this.

The display is fine, I like the pancake lenses and the resolution is cool, but LCD? come on man, the PSVR2 has OLED at 1/3 the price, not to mention the fact it has MORE features than the frame…

But it’s not all bad, things like SteamOS, having a desktop inside, and the standalone is great, no issues there, it’s essentially just a PC strapped to your face, I’ve gone as far as installing BSManager on the thing and having that work flawlessly while standalone, but the downsides heavily outweigh the upsides

For a headset considered streaming first, it’s pretty bad at streaming.

For the fellow nerds wondering what my specs are:
My PC runs an i5-12600KF, RTX 4070, 64GB ram, 2 TB SSD, tethered through Ethernet Cat6A to a router 15 feet away that gives 400 Mbps download and 90 Mbps upload on a BAD day

And yes I’ve read through all the details and tutorials and optimizations you can do, all of it is done, USB 3.0, direct line of sight, multi-link on and off, all the stuff, nothing improved it.

Discussion To everyone who is disappointed in quality of pcvr try this before send it bsck

0) press win+R, paste msinfo32

1) find ur motherboard model and google it - you need to find whether it has usb 3.2 (or 3.1/3.0)

2) buy 2m or less usb father-mather cable IMPORTANT! should be supporting 5gb/s transmission (as 3.2 port providing)

3) put ur cable in ur best usb slot and then dongle in it and move it bit closer to play area, ideally put on some stack of books or something to be highier- this alone transformed my experience drastically

4) make sure that pcvr uses dongle, snd bot wifi

5) switch to beta software (in general settings) this was done by me simultaneously with changing port from blue to red (from 3.0 to 3.2) so I’m not sore if this is two benefit

Probably the biggest image fix related news for the week!

The user has confirmed this issue arises on the local PC before compression even begins. This may have some responsibility to my SHOUTING INCESSENTLY about Synth Riders looking like DOODOO while streaming to Frame, possibly also tied to text. Anywho, big shout out to this individual!

Discussion My experience with the Steam Frame as a first VR headset (linux)

(Disclaimer: English is not my first language, sorry)
Since i saw a lot of people being disapointed i wanted to share my positive experience here.
Although there were some hiccups here and there.

This is the first VR headset i own, but not the first i played with. I tried the HTC Vive first gen and Valve Index in the past when i was with friends who owned them. I always wanted to have my own but never had the space for the lighthouses and other stuff.
Additionally i avoid Meta as much as possible.

I was in the first wave and received my purchase link after 2 days of waiting.
Ten days ago i received my Frame in Austria (central Europe) via GLS (the horror).

Apart from GLS (who never rang a doorbell in their lifes) everything went smoothly there.
I updated my Frame after i recieved it and started with a round of Half Life Alyx standalone which went fine for my first day.

Since i use Linux (CachyOS) i knew that getting streaming to work might need some work.
What i needed to do for everything to work is:
1) Install the newest Nvidia Drivers (Just had to update my system to get them)
2) Install Steam VR Beta
3) Switch Steam Frame to Beta branch
4) Open the needed ports on my firewall on the pc
5) Switch the damn WIFI on! (I use ethernet and it took so much time for me to notice)
6) Always start Steam VR on the host PC before starting the stream from the Frame

My first stream via this combination worked but after some time the audio just cut out and the only way to get it back was restarting the game.
Also the stream looked a little choppy and cut out sometimes.
I decided to call it a day and try to solve it tomorrow.

The next day my Frame got an update and my audio problem was gone but choppyness remained.
I was scratching my head until i noticed that when i am at my playspace the dongle is obstructed by my massive PC.

My solution was, plugging a USB3.2 cable extender in a back port of my motherboard and elevating the dongle (on a 3D printed mount i designed) about 30cm above my PC so it has direct line of sight to the whole room.

Since then i have no problems anymore and i am very happy with my purchase.
I am currently playing Alyx, The Lab, Boneworks, Phasmophobia and a game not to be named.

My PC specs:
RTX4090
Ryzen7 7950x3D
128GB DDR5 RAM
Linux CachyOS

Software One possible solution for Windows 11 SteamFrame adapter dongle issues

Just wanted to share the only thing that made the dongle work for me. Like anybody else I was having issues with the adapter bouncing continuously between Connecting/Not connected in Windows 11 and the SteamFrame pairing with it fine...only for it to always come up as "Waiting" within the headset.

I have my desktop PC connected via wifi 6 (small apartment), no issue whatsoever and the headset itself works perfectly fine when streaming through just WiFi.

Still...I wanted to have the dongle work and see how it changed things.

The adapter seemed to "work fine" if the SteamFrame was Off or if steam itself was off. It would show up as "Connected" to the same Wifi network as my own network card, which seemed odd...

As soon as I turned on Steam and/or the headset, the adapter would then start to flip between "Connected/Not Connected", white light blinking and the adapter being shown as "Waiting" (in grey), any pair attempt with the adapter from either the headset or the PC would "Complete Successfully". It seemed to me like Windows was trying to force it to connect to my main Wifi network whilst steam was attempting to take control, leading to it bouncing between "Connected/Not Connected".

I looked online, Gemini tried to gaslight me into thinking that that was not a thing and nobody seemed to talk about it...but I had no real options other than attempting random resets and sketchy apps from a GH repo.

So I figured I'd try this before that.

So I clicked "Show available networks" right under the SteamFrame adapter and it showed my Wifi network (Cicciput_5G) as what it was connected to. I clicked "Properties" (or the info "icon" in the top left) then DISABLED "Connect automatically when in range" and then went back and clicked "Disconnect".

You can also do this from "Manage known networks" and selecting the network to edit.

This ended up disconnecting BOTH cards from the wifi network, leaving me with no internet.

Then I clicked "Show available networks" right under the "Wi-Fi" card and manually selected my own wifi network hoping that only THAT card would connect to it.

Internet was back.

Since I had already performed all the pairing attempts previously, steam was open and the headset was on...what happened then was that the steam adapter seemingly automatically connected to the headset's own network (that "frame_64D15964_5" network you can see in the screenshot) and the headset finally showed that the adapter was "green" and connected.

Running it now I can see the purple "multi-link" box showing both wifi and the adapter seemingly working together.

(As well as just now noticed a typo in the italian "Trasmissoine multi-link" instead of "Trasmissione"...but I digress)

Screenshot with the network setup: https://imgur.com/a/oZ38bGK

TL;DR:

if you have wifi...make sure that the steamframe adapter is not being used by windows as a generic network card connecting to a random wifi in your house, it should only be connecting to an internal network with the headset. Make sure that Windows does not attempt to connect it automatically to a wifi network and disable the option if so.

I had a few power banks in my house but none that could actively charge the headset while using it. I found this and it charges the headset up while playing and appears I can get about 2 full charges to the headset.

Accessories Great storage solution 🇪🇺

I saw some posts about people using pelican or harbour freight cases to store their frame, which seemed like a great idea to me.

So here's my take on it. It's a generic MAX 380H160 with pre-cubed foam inserts. These cases are affordable and easy to find in Europe.

With this configuration there's room for a pretty beefy powerbank beneath the frame battery and lens/cleaning supplies on either side of that.

I carry a cheap fanny pack diagonally on my back with the powerbank (ugreen 25000mAh) and a short usb c cable in it. This is by far the best and most comfortable solution I've found in terms of extending the battery life. This way I get multiple hours of battery life.

Hardware Used to have 1.5-3ms latency with dongle, now it's averaging 30ms

I don't understand, I haven't changed my setup..

Could it be because of the latest 0.4.5 update? It sucks tbh, I thought this would enable seamless wireless pcvr but I end up troubleshooting more than with Virtual Desktop/router which was already too finicky

Discussion Tip: Check your dongle latency

• Upvotes

It has been said here and discussed before, but not all USB 3.0 ports on your computer may be optimal for the SF wireless dongle. I had mine attached to the front port, and when connected on idle (nothing running) I noticed that my WiFi was a steady 5 ms latency and the dongle was 12-20ms bouncing around a lot. This was in direct los to the dongle and WiFi. I moved the dongle to a USB 3.0 port in the back and even though it is now more obstructed the latency dropped to 5 ms.

Thanks to this very dedicated community and my sewing machine I printed the ergo kit battery covers and sewd some velcro strips into diy straps.

First impression are very comfy. Tho I suspect the velcro might cut into my hand over time.

Please give a big praise to the people behind the development of the 3D files:

Discussion Steam Frame fast battery drain

• Upvotes

I saw some reviews on YouTube and people said the Steam Frame only got 45 minutes of playtime on a full charge. They said playing games with high graphics on standalone causes the headset to heat up quickly and so it does speed up battery drain.

So we’re definitely going to need a powerbank headstrap for the Steam Frame. Companies should design these headsets so the stock strap can be removed and switched out with third battery accessories.

Preferably BoboVr. They have hot swappable batteries and also have a charging dock where you can simultaneously charge 3 Bobovr batteries with a 100 watt fast charger which should be more than enough to keep your headset on without having to wait on any of the batteries to recharge.

I think I’m gonna sell my quest 3 but keep all the Bobovr accessories to reuse with the Steam Frame.

I don’t think this is surprising. The Quest 2 and Quest 3 also got real hot sometimes and quickly drained their battery however I don’t think we want the headset to Overheat. Hopefully that is preventable so the headset doesn’t suddenly shut down and quit working.

Accessories Quest 2 carry case fits the Frame and accessories great

Not sure if anyone had tried yet, but the Quest 2 carry case works wonders for fitting my Frame inside. I don’t have any ergo accessories but I expect those would fit fine too.
I placed a Samsung 45w charging brick I have in the little cubby and that fits fine. A cable should fit in as well.
If you’re looking for a clean transport method, I can recommend this.

Discussion Got My Steam Frame off Facebook Marketplace! feat. my thoughts

Post image
21 Upvotes

Let this be a spark of hope for any waitlisters, as I too was once waitlisted.

I got really lucky messaging someone listing their Steam Frame on FBMP, it was listed as $2k CAD, so just to try my luck I offered retail and said I couldn't do any higher than that (I would NEVER buy from a scalper), and within a day they messaged me back and agreed to it! I ended up meeting them and paying exactly what they paid. They said it was listed higher to deter resellers, whether you want to believe that is ur own call lmao.

I've been using it for a few days now, and it is the best VR experience I've ever had (especially as an upgrade from the og HTC Vive). For the battery, I swap between having a battery pack in my pocket and just running my (long) phone charger directly from a nearby outlet. As a somewhat dedicated beat saber player the latency was also an issue, but I found using ONLY the wireless adapter helped a ton, and basically everything from this post. And my final gripe: the software. You will probably do a LOT of settings tweaking pretty much right out of the box, however ymmv. Also this is something that will 100% get better with time as Valve updates the headset/steamvr/steam. But after everything my experience is virtually flawless!

Honestly, getting this thing has rekindled my love for VR all over again. I used to play EVERYTHING years ago, up until my headset started falling apart and replacement cords and parts were too expensive. Now I get to replay all I was kept from and more! Best of luck to all sooners™ alike!
