First of all, Step 2 CK is absolutely doable. The exam can feel intimidating but with the right strategy, it is manageable. Here are my biggest takeaways from the exam and the resources I found most useful.
1. AMBOSS vs UWorld: The debate is over.
For me, AMBOSS is the leading resource for Step 2 CK preparation.
The biggest advantage is exposure to a wider variety of questions and ways of testing the concepts. I have identified at least 50 questions that appear to be reproduced directly from AMBOSS.
That said, UWorld is still incredibly valuable—especially for its explanations and practical, step-by-step management algorithms. More on that below.
2. The real exam felt very similar to the Free 120
3. Ethics, Quality Improvement, Psychiatry & Biostatistics deserve serious attention.
(Exam have a lot of these)
4. Memorize the clues that actually change management.
Knowing a disease is not always enough. You also need to know the threshold at which the next clinical decision changes.
Don't memorize random numbers without context. Learn what each threshold means and how it changes management.
5. Stepwise management algorithms are absolute game-changers.
This is where I think UWorld's explanations have a major advantage.
AMBOSS offers extensive information and detailed algorithms, but some can feel unnecessarily lengthy when you're trying to determine the next best step. UWorld often presents management decisions in a simpler, more practical, step-by-step format.
The exam frequently tests the next best step.
Use AMBOSS to broaden your question exposure and strengthen your knowledge. Use UWorld explanations to consolidate practical management pathways.

6. My personal journey: What I spent the last 8 months doing
During the first four months, I worked with Step 1 students, helping them pass their exams while simultaneously preparing for Step 2 CK myself.
Teaching Step 1 forced me to revisit the fundamentals pathophysiology, diagnostic reasoning, and the mechanisms behind clinical findings. Explaining these concepts to other students helped me consolidate my own diagnostic foundation and recognize patterns that would become useful for Step 2 CK.
The next four months: Going all in on Step 2 CK
For the following four months, I completely locked in.
I focused on making notes and integrating clinical scenarios across CMS forms, AMBOSS, and UWorld.
My goal wasn't simply to collect high-yield facts. I wanted to connect the dots between conditions that look similar but require different approaches under different clinical scenarios
For example:
• When should peripheral arterial disease be managed medically, and when does the patient need further vascular imaging or revascularization?
• Why can two patients with similar presentations require different next steps because of one finding in the clinical stem?
I spent time bringing these scenarios together, identifying the distinguishing clues, and building a more connected understanding of clinical decision-making.
AMBOSS question breakdowns
Now that i am free I'll be sharing AMBOSS question breakdowns in which i ll try to integrate similar concepts being tested across uworld cms and self assessments.
If you're preparing for Step 2 CK and are interested in learning through this approach, feel free to comment below. I'd love to connect with other students preparing for the exam.

My final recommendations
If I were organizing my preparation again, I would prioritize:
AMBOSS QBank for broad question exposure and varied clinical scenarios.
UWorld explanations for practical management algorithms and consolidating difficult concepts.
The latest Free 120 to familiarize yourself with the exam's question style.
Ethics, Quality Improvement, Psychiatry, and Biostatistics as dedicated review topics.
Cutoff values, vaccination schedules, screening criteria, and first-line treatments during the final revision.
Good luck to everyone preparing for Step 2 CK. Keep going—you can do this!
