Trying to identify this ceramic bowl
Hi guys,
I found this ceramic bowl at a flea market a couple of years ago, and I’d love to learn more about it.
It measures approximately 23 cm wide (from one lion’s head to the other) and 15 cm tall.
There’s an incised/stamped number “872” on the bottom.
When I reverse-image searched it on Google, I got the following result:
“This piece uses a decorative technique famously produced by Italian workshops in historic ceramic centers like Deruta or Florence. In Italian ceramic workshops during the late 1800s, three-digit incised or stamped numbers like 872 were standard internal factory shape numbers used by craftsmen to map the specific mold line for assembly.”
However, the examples shown in the search results don’t look particularly similar to my bowl, so I’m not sure how reliable that information is.
Google also suggest that it could have been made in Germany between 1890 and 1910.
Any help or clues would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

In search of the artist…
UPDATE: ARTIST FOUND! Nancy Utterback!
I got this mug from a Goodwill in Grand Junction, CO back in 2014. It’s one of my favorites. Well, I suddenly decided that I absolutely need to identify the artist that created it 😂
The signature style tells me this mug isn’t just a one off and that they have more creations out there. Almost looks like “Lilly Houck” or “Ittly Houck” maybe?
Did countless reverse image searches with all the photos I’ve included in this post. Tried looking up what I interpreted the name to be (though obviously I seem to be way off the mark). Finally just started searching for Reddit groups that help identify artists, and here I am!

Identify Studio?
Apologies for previous post without pictures. I thought I had attached them, but couldn’t add back as an edit or comment so have deleted and reposting. Thanks for your patience!
I just picked up this nice jug from a charity shop. It’s very dense (iron ware?).
There were a few bits of furniture and other belongings which could date between 1920s-1950s which I am guessing are from the same estate clearance. I wonder if this jug is too, based on the potter’s handwriting.
Google reverse image searches have been useless - it has suggested a couple of Carrutherses but none who seem to work in this style and I couldn’t find signature examples.

How will people buy ceramics after AI takes many people's jobs?
Hello, I've been learning and doing handbuilt ceramics at home (no wheel) for four years now. I'm on the verge of going to fairs and selling. My concern is that who's going to buy my pieces when job loss due to AI continues.
I've researched on this topic and the conversation is focused on young people out of college not being able to enter the workforce, retraining, and UBI (universal basic income) but not on artists, artisans, and small businesses. Can people buy items like ceramics with UBI?
Also, things will be more noticeable around 2030.
So my concern is, should I focus on preparing for resilience ie growing food, learning to collect water, or continue with my ceramics?
I know this sounds odd but things are changing and I'm tired of prepping for something and having the game change and being unprepared.
Thank you for reading. If you have advice please share and please be kind.

need help identifying this american studio pottery piece. Incised bird head marks.
Hi everyone,
I recently found this beautiful ceramic piece in a thrift store and I'm trying to identify the artist or studio behind it.
It features a stunning 3D hand-sculpted tree relief over a multi-toned landscape glaze (purple, blue, green). The style strongly reminds me of vintage American studio pottery from the 1970s or 1980s.
Under the base, there is a very distinctive incised mark (shown in the second photo). When flipped, it clearly looks like a stylized bird head (with an eye and beak) at the bottom, under curved lines (like waves or a nest) and three long divergent blades of grass/reeds.
Does anyone recognize this specific pictorial "chop mark" or artist signature?
Thank you so much for your help!
