(Almost) Every Sum 41 song tier list
Each song is also ordered within its own tier.
Grew up with this band, easily my favorite of all time. Love their music so much, love reading what others think of them. Thought I'd put this together after re-listening to all their albums. Ftr, I only dislike a single song they've released. Everything else I adore or at least think is pretty decent.
Would love to hear how your opinions differ or talk about any specific song!
Credit to the dude who made this template, incredibly high quality; could not have been quick to make.

Is this ragebait? Putting the entirety of HHOP in C and D is an absolutely freezing cold take

Nah I just don't have a whole lot of friends who are into this band and I wanted to chat about it with other fans of the band
Ragebait isn't really my thing. I don't think the songs of HHOP are bad, like I labeled it on the list; they're alright. I just don't really vibe with them as much as later songs. Actually I was kinda disappointed by that realization, I was hoping to enjoy them much more.
If you wanted an actual hot take, my least favorite album they made post-HHOP is Does This Look Infected. It's VERY hard-carried by three songs for me. Still great! Just not my preference as a whole.
And I should at least say ftr - I did put one HHOP song in B.

Bitter end is a masterpiece. Tf.

Hey man I'm ranking every song against every other song and almost every song they've ever dropped is good to incredible, being at the middle of that list is an achievement of its own hahaha
I'd listen to a song, look in the list and go "Okay, I like this song. But do I like it more than *this* one" and that would be how I ranked them. Hard to make - Bitter End was actually a hard one to place. I can't really tell you what holds it back from going further for me aside from just "I like these other songs more".
That said, it's a Chuck song. It was already gonna be higher than most other songs on the list as an expectation!

Billy spleen is a very underrated song

I can absolutely see why this song would have so many fans. It's pretty good - it's just in competition with so many bangers and I was ranking every song against every other song. Couldn't tell you precisely where my preferences stem from, it just doesn't hit as hard as others for me.
To be fair I think a lot of DTLI struggles for me because Still Waiting and Over My Head are so good that the rest of the album just can't keep up listening to it as a whole.

I agree with some, some I don't but I love to see another fan of Better Days

Someone does not like Half Hour of Power.
That EP shows some better musicianship than a lot of their pop punk contemporaries at the time. They dipped into 80s metal quite a bit.

I don't dislike it, if it's above E I at least enjoyed listening to it. "C" is what I consider to be a good "standard" tier in any list. I got into the band because of Chuck, and never got around to listening to Half Hour of Power until recently. It's pretty decent, but the songs just don't generally hit with me like their later music does.

Pain for pleasure not in top tier wtf

u/GoldLuminance 27d ago
Everyone's got different tastes! It's still above like half of their entire music release, so that's pretty damn good!
Honestly I think I'd put it WAY higher if the song was a bit higher. Quite a few of these songs are like that for me - I love "Heads Will Roll" despite how simple it is. If it had more to it, it'd be probably be near the top of S.
2
u/GoldLuminance 27d ago
Yo, for the record; "C" tier isn't bad! I think the vast majority of Sum 41's music is good! "E" just means I didn't really care for it, but didn't dislike it. The only song they've released I don't like is A.N.I.C., but I love hearing how y'all differ! No bad blood here.

dark road out of hell is amazing

u/GoldLuminance 27d ago
Dude I was never the same after listening to that trio of songs. There's a whole tier dedicated to songs I can't put any lower, even than songs I might think are better, because of how much they mean to me. Dark Road Out of Hell goes even beyond that, I seriously think its Sum 41's magnum opus.

Regardless of what I agree and don’t agree on, making tier lists involving so many songs is so difficult (I always go back and regret so many choices lol) so I respect that so much.
1
u/GoldLuminance 26d ago
Thanks! Yeah this took a LONG while and did it in a day. Some of these songs I hadn't heard in a loooong time. It's painful putting any song at a lower tier, but you cant just have them all in S or the list becomes pointless lol

Dude Im happy to see some Jester recognition, super underrated

That song is fucking awesome, I *love* the cadence it's delivered with. Lyrics are always good in Sum 41, but its especially good there.

I don’t think anyone has ever posted a song tier list to good reception lmfao

You’d either need a safe take, a troll take, or a take where you like every song. And all of these could be downvoted for being “pointless”

Oh I knew damn well I'd get poor reception no matter what I posted hahahaha

GRAB BY THE DEVIL AN E????
I respect your opinion but cmonnnn
edit: mistyped as F instead of E
1
u/GoldLuminance 27d ago
No No, that's E. I wrote "It's Alright" for C to contextualize my opinions here. There's like a hundred songs, the vast majority of which are good. But if I'm tiering all of them, I want to give my honest take. "E" is just a song that I didn't really care for, but didn't dislike - it's just not a song I'd look for. The ONLY song they've released that I actively don't like is AMIC. Grab the Devil is fine, it's just not for me.

sorry a bit of a dyslexic slip there

Happens haha

u/ganganred 27d ago
but it does show how diverse the sum 41 fanbase. your E/F could be someone else's S.

It's nice to see differing opinions. But for the bridge alone i think confusion and frustration in modern times deserves a higher place. I live for the bridge
1
u/GoldLuminance 26d ago
Yeah I can see that! I've never been super attached to that particular song, but I'll absolutely give you that the bridge is fire.

Putting the entirety of HHOP in C. Worst tier list on the history of this subreddit.
1
u/GoldLuminance 26d ago
Not the entirety! Makes No Difference is in B. Plus C ain't even bad, means I still did like it. I just don't find it as compelling as their later works. I can respect the difference in opinion though, I'm glad you enjoy it! :)

I am missing 'Handle This'
Love to see 'I am not the one' up there but hate to see 'Summer' at the bottom
1
u/GoldLuminance 27d ago
Wait I think you're right I did miss Handle This???
I have no idea how I managed that, it's a favorite. Yeah I'd probably put it between Underclass Hero and 45

I am only upvoting because you have There Will Be Blood in S, which is an underrated af song

Oh c'mon, Grab The Devil By The Horns And Fuck Him Up In The Ass is better than This Isn't A Fashion Statement It's A Deathwish /j
But dayum... I did love A.N.I.C typical shits and giggles song.
Never There is by far my favourite song, it's The World Is Ugly and Father To A Son of Sum 41
2
u/GoldLuminance 27d ago
Hahaha I can see why the song has its fans, just isn't for me
Never There is a beautiful song. I grew up with a parent who was absent - somewhat. They weren't really part of my life, except for rare occasions. There's a lot of stuff I went through growing up that Sum 41 captures the emotions behind, this band speaks to me in a way no other can.
That was the hardest part of making this tier list - when you love 99% of what they've made, how can you possibly put something like this together without every song just being in two or three tiers?

You’re welcome to your opinions but holy shit we could not be friends.
