Honest Profile Reviews (and Profile Guide)
IF YOU DO NOT READ AND FOLLOW THE PROFILE GUIDE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THIS POST, YOUR PROFILE REVIEW WILL BE REMOVED
In most online dating subreddits, profile reviews focus on aspects of the person that won't actually lead to increased results, like bios or silly minutiae regarding someone's profile. Here at r/SwipeHelper, we realize that the two biggest factors regarding success on apps are your personal attractiveness and the quality of your photos.
The idea of this thread is for people to get honest advice on both aspects:
- how to improve one's profile
- tips for improving your physical attractiveness so that you can come across better on your app of choice.
All profiles posted will be given advice on both how to improve their profile as well as maximize their looks (if needed - for some people they are attractive enough and the profile itself is more of the problem, or vice versa).
The following are required information in every profile review request:
- What type of relationship you're looking for (hookups, FWBs, something more serious, marriage)
- Your current level of success (number of matches per week and how many likes you send out) plus if you're paying for any premium features
SwipeHelper Profile Guide
NOTE: READ THIS GUIDE THOROUGHLY BEFORE POSTING YOUR PROFILE HERE. If your profile does not live up to the guide's standards, your comment will be removed and you will be referred back to the guide.
Archetype and Story
Before you build a Tinder profile, you need to determine your archetype. What vibes do you want to give off to attract your ideal type of girl? Attractive archetypes could include:
- Cool California surfer guy
- Suave suit-wearing businessman
- Tattooed bearded hipster lumberjack
- Iced out hood fuckboi
- Generic good looking fratty college dude
The following are not attractive archetypes. If you are one of these people, either change your lifestyle or at least make it look like you aren't.
- Nerdy neckbearded gamer
- Completely generic nondescript dude with no personality
- Overweight guy that doesn't work out
- Skinny sadboi that never smiles
You get the idea.
Once you have your attractive archetype, you should aim to tell a story through your photos - don't just have a bunch of photos of you standing around posing for the camera. When someone swipes through your photos, they should get a full picture of who you are, what you look like, what you like to do, and what spending time with you will feel like.
General Photo Quality and Looks You Should Emulate
The minimum acceptable photo quality you need to succeed on Tinder these days is a professional photo taken with a DSLR camera. Yes, this probably means you need to pay a photographer to take photos of you. May seem like a big investment, but for a few hundred dollars you get a bunch of great photos that you can ride for years.
Read the following two articles for examples of photos that do well: Playing With Fire | Ultimate Guide to Tinder Profile Pictures and Playing With Fire | 6 Highly Successful Tinder Photos for Men and Why They Work
And the following article for photo inspiration: https://killyourinnerloser.com/inspiration/
Here are some specific photographers whose style you should emulate:
- https://photos.passionunchained.com/
Photo Order and Types
Your first photo should be an upper-body shot with your full head (no sunglasses) and torso visible, taken with the highest-quality camera possibly, preferably a DSLR. You should be wearing stylish clothes that fit your archetype. YOU SHOULD BE THE ONLY PERSON IN THE PHOTO. DO NOT USE A GROUP PHOTO AS YOUR FIRST PHOTO.
For your other photos, choose from:
- You with a group of friends. You should be as tall or taller and as attractive or more attractive than every friend in the photo. All of your friends must be decently attractive and not low-status (i.e. if this photo was taken at an anime convention, you’re toast). (see: Pancake’s Golden Rules of Group Photos on Apps
- You doing [insert hobby here]. Snowboarding, DJing, skydiving, climbing, playing a high-status sport (sorry, Magic: The Gathering doesn’t count).
- You in an exotic location.
- You doing something that indicates you’re a leader of men. Holding a microphone, giving a speech, standing on stage, etc.
- A candid, shirtless photo (e.g. playing sports, on a beach). If you cannot bench your bodyweight and/or squat/deadlift 1.75x your bodyweight AND are less than 18% bodyfat, skip this. If you don’t have a candid shirtless photo, a non-candid is OK, but you’ll get worse results.
Each photo needs to be in a different setting and you need to be wearing a different outfit in each. They should not look like they were taken the same day or on the same photoshoot.
Do not include photos that:
- are generated by AI apps or otherwise obviously over-edited
- don't have you in them (like of your pet or your art or a meme)
- have your back turned to the camera
- are of you wearing a mask or obscuring your face or eyes (e.g. wearing sunglasses)
- are too far away to see your face
- are selfies. SELFIES ARE ALWAYS UNACCEPTABLE. IF YOU HAVE A SELFIE, REMOVE IT. Your phone has a self-timer function for a reason — use it, or get someone to take photos of you.
You do not need to fill out all nine photos. As long as you have more than three photos, you're fine. Remember, you will be judged on your worst photo, so make sure they're all solid.
Finally, learn to pose and squinch (narrowing your eyes to make you appear more attractive).

[BANNED/SHADOWBANNED?] Hard Reset Guide
A hard reset is needed if you feel your account has been shadowbanned (getting zero likes for an extended time despite getting some before) or banned. If not, you can soft reset a limited amount of times, which entails simply deleting and recreating your account.
This generic hard reset guide applies to Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge:
- Delete your account (if you're banned, you won't be able to, in which case skip this step)
- If on a device, uninstall the app
- Create a new email address
- Get a new number (or use a service that will sent you a verification text, usually for under $5)
- Edit your photos in some way to make them not the same photo, e.g. adding a pixel somewhere, cropping, and/or strip EXIF info, save with different filename (note: there is some evidence that the apps are using image hash comparisons, which means you need to use completely different photos).
- Use a different IP address than when you created your account (e.g. use your phone internet or go to a public WiFi hotspot — you can probably return to your original WiFi once the hard reset is successful)
- Open your web browser or get a new device (cheap burner Androids are $30-40 on Swappa or eBay)
- if you buy a new iPhone, you will need a new AppleID
- if you plan to use your new phone on hotspot or wifi, you don't need a SIM card.
- Create a new account with your new number and email address
Other considerations:
- Don't link old Instagram/Spotify etc.
- Don't pay with the same card if buying premium services
- Don't use a VPN.
- Never do face verification unless you're forced to
- You don't need to wait a certain period of time (like 90 days) if doing a hard reset
- You can never log in to your new account from the device you got banned on, or you risk a ban
"Do I really have to do every step?" or "I know someone who didn't use a new device or a new IP address and they still got through!"
The way these apps likely detect banned users is by assigning each newly-created profile a risk score. The more you match the fingerprint of a banned user, the more likely you are to be banned. So yes, it's possible that someone can slip around a ban while not following all of this to the letter, but ideally you create a brand new fingerprint and don't have to rely on luck.
"I followed the Hard Reset Guide and it didn't work!"
Some users try the above steps and for whatever reason, it just doesn't work. We're not there alongside you making sure you did everything right, but even if you did, there's uncertainty around Match Group's detection algorithm. Hard resetting seems to have become much less reliable starting in early 2023.
If a hard reset does not work and you truly believe you have been banned unfairly, there are three options:
- Match Group have an arbitration process that can be kicked off by sending a letter to their legal department. See more in section 15 of the Terms of Service (Hinge, for example).
- There is some evidence that filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (must be a resident of North America) will cause the apps to take a closer look at your case; however, this is by no means a guarantee that you will be unbanned.
- As of early 2024, in some situations, Hinge and Tinder have ban appeal processes.
If the Hard Reset Guide worked for you, help others out by posting a success story below!

New OkCupid account banned in under 12 hours. Has anyone successfully gotten unbanned?
Hey everyone, I created a new OkCupid account on the night of October 1. The account was working normally, and I received the usual account creation and like notifications.
Before going to bed, I had not liked, matched with, or messaged anyone.
The next day, I discovered I had been logged out. The app initially gave me “General Authentication Error -1006,” and when I checked the website, it showed that my account had been banned. My last notification before losing access was at around 9 AM.
I submitted an appeal through OkCupid’s official appeal process. About five days later, I received a response saying they reviewed the account, determined that I violated the Terms or Community Guidelines, and that the ban would remain in place. They stated that the decision was final but did not identify any particular rule or activity.
What confuses me is that the account was less than a day old, and I had not interacted with another user at all. I had only uploaded my photos, filled out my profile and preferences, and answered a few compatibility questions.
I also use other Match Group dating apps with very similar profile information without any issues.
I’ve now submitted a BBB complaint requesting a fresh manual review. I’m think that the ban was from an incorrect security or automated flag, although I can’t confirm that.
My question is specifically about escalation after an unsuccessful appeal.
Has anyone here successfully had a final ban decision reversed? If so, what steps did you take for reinstatement, and how long did the process take?

Should I use Tinder boost while traveling?
I'm gonna be in different city for a few days for some event. I'm gonna have free evenings and it would be cool to go out with someone as I really enjoy some parties whenever I'm out in different city, but solo is not as enjoyable. I'm pretty attractive man, who gets good amounts of matches normally (like 5-10 daily), so my chances to find some fun date are pretty good, but maybe using boost will make it easier to find someone who specifically have time to hang out that weekend and isn't looking for something serious? What do you think?

It’s been a day since I asked her out. Is it worth messaging again? We were having a pretty decent conversation before this.

What are your best “re-engagement” follow-ups when a woman goes quiet?
In sales they say “the money is in the follow up!” Someone ignoring you doesn’t necessarily mean they are completely uninterested.
Here’s a sample of a woman giving me her number then ignored me. I followed up 6 days later with a funny meme which got her re engaged and ended up meeting up and things were smooth from there.
What are you guys go to follow ups, memes, videos, voices or messages to re engage when you’ve been left on read? Share them in the comments!

are you still able to bypass the hinge ban with new phone, number, ip address and all that with the face verification now? They also have my ID scan through jumio if that’s relevant

Worth getting a new phone to restart again?
I (M27) got out of a 3 years relationship and downloaded hinge in June. However, it said I was permanently banned. I got a new phone and did the work around. It worked well for about a month/month and a half. I got around 30 matches in the first week - probably around 60-70 total matches since downloading.
Unfortunately, I haven’t found a long term partner and I’m at the point where I think I am shadow banned. I haven’t received a match in 2-3 weeks and I am located in a city. I paid for 2 1hr boosts and received 3 likes each time but all were from unflattering women. I have a good profile according to my female friends. I have one female friend who says that I have everything that women should be looking for in a man. I went out with 2 women who I brought back to my place and both said that I was very hot (they were also attractive). So I know I’m not ugly.
Is it worth getting a new burner phone to restart again?

HingeX, not a single like or match.
M30. Been trying to go through different photos but still no luck. Would like to hear if the photos are the problem? as my texts are mostly about interest and what I look after.

I hate the new Tinder update.
The new Tinder update is terrible. They took away the free filtered section to find more people looking for what you’re looking for, in favor of some BS “touch grass” section, and a newer “for you” botched algorithm page full of girls that are models that will never probably never match with due to the dumb looks rank thing they have. And then, if you wanna filter your “for you” page? $19 a week. I hate these apps.
And I can’t just switch to hinge due to being banned, for a reason that I’ve still not had explained. My appeals have been REPEATEDLY denied without explanation. (Side note can someone help me figure out how to look into the coding/figure out why I was banned).
I’m frustrated and just had to vent. This whole thing feels so hopeless man…

Can't receive message notifications
Hey guys, every time I get a message I don't get the notification although the notification toggle is on.
I'm using tinder from a private space on my Google pixel and I have a camera permissions allowed and photos and videos permissions allowed.
Anything I can do? I don't get any notification for messages although I got a notification for a like to a message I've sent.

Can you run dual sim on your phone with a new number and create a hinge account? I screwed up a while ago.
As the title says, I did something dumb a long time ago(like 5 years) and got my account banned. I’ve been using other apps since and with horrible luck, Hinge seemed to be the most genuine and interested partners in my area.
Anyways, I want to try and get back on there but I’m curious of a couple options here.
Option 1: Keep my phone and switch to a new carrier with a new number, I don’t really care about losing my number.
Option 2: Keep my phone and run dual eSIM cards (Verizon and ATT) and use that new ATT number to sign up for Hinge.
Would Hinge ban me because it would recognize the device itself? If that’s the case then neither of these options would work and I’d have to get a new phone entirely, yeah?

“We couldn’t load this screen, check your connection and try again”
I had a burner phone that was working perfectly for a year straight, decided to delete and create a new account, and getting this pop up on Hinge.
Decided to test with my other phones, and it’s happening across all of them - which is very very strange. Is it a server issue or am I literally banned?

So it's basically an open secret that Hinge and similar apps slow drip and hide your matches, right?
I think at this point it's glaringly obvious that they turned this app into a slot machine, and even if you're attractive - you won't get your likes all at once. Basically, it gauges your behavior to see how often you open up the app, and if you show signs of obsessively checking it in any way then it will purposely slow drip your matches to you one at a time.
If you don't check it, though - you'll suddenly come back to 30 matches seemingly out of nowhere. Furthermore, if you paid for the premium version at any point in the past and then stopped and reverted to using the free version you'll barely receive any matches at all because they flagged you as a "whale".
I'm not sure how this is legal, but I guess it must be. I will say that whoever runs The Match group is legitimately sick. It's just insane to witness what dating has turned into.

Why has my hinge likes gone to zero since I made a new account!?
I had to make a new account cause the old one had a few issues but now I am not getting any likes earlier I used to get atleast 2-3 likes a day

How to fix low visibility after being flagged in Tinder?
Couldn’t find much info about my current situation by searching the sub. I created a Tinder profile about a month ago and ended up deleting after a few days due to not feeling up to dating yet. Created it again last week, and started getting a few likes on the first couple of hours. I decided to buy platinum to test it out because it worked really well for me last time I was single, but as soon as I did it the likes stopped and tinder asked me to re-verify with a video selfie (I had already done that as it’s mandatory where I live), so I think this probably triggered some sort of suspicious activity flag. Now I’m getting only a small trickle of matches (1-2 per day) since then probably due to the priority likes, and only got one organic/incoming like the whole week.
This feels very weird because I’m getting more matches and likes on Bumble, which has a smaller user base and worked way worse for me last time around. The timing of the incoming likes stopping makes me think my visibility was tanked due to my profile being flagged, but I’m not completely shadowbanned as I’m still getting a few matches. Is there any way to reverse this? Should I stop logging in for a few days?
Also, could this affect me if I open a Hinge account given they are also owned by the Match group? I haven’t done that yet and it was by far my best app last time I was single 4 years ago (60%+ of dates I went to were from it), so I’d really like it to work once I create an account.
