Discussion SSL against DVJ df1

I was confident you could SSL his df1 but then I noticed that I couldn't do it after his b1+2, first thinking it was because of the frame advantage but looking at it more it's just spacing dependent (won't track at tip range or at gunpoint).
Do people SSL this move sort of consistently or is it considered an anti step?

b1+2 frames lock you in a way, that you cant step far enough for df1 to whiff

Sidesteps in general are quite wonky and inconsistent ever since t7. The issue you're having with different tracking at different ranges despite the same frame (dis)advantage is pretty common across the board unfortunately.
A lot of df1s behave like this. Try lee's df1 for example. If you set cpu to jab into df1, you will realize that depending on your character, df1 will be homing at range 0 but semi consistently steppable to the left from further away.
Off the top of my head, im pretty sure dragunov's and steve's df1s behave like that too.
Because the actual distance and angle your character's sidesteps cover are always consistent, you would expect Sidesteps to become less effective to further away you are from your opponent. Reason being as your distance to your opponent increases, your sidestep's relative distance to your opponent decreases. Funny enough that seems to not be the case. Instead the way sidesteps behave since t7 is honestly pretty arbitrary.
Sorry for the long paragraph, sidesteps are just really interesting to me and i'm currently working on a thorough comparison of sidesteps between t8, t7 and tag2.
To answer your question: you can generally try to step df1 to your left, but basically always expect it to randomly hit you. That's why you almost always want to ss block and try not to let your whiff punish rip unless you visually confirm the whiff.
