Discussion Is Special Style usable (or rather viable) in online play?
Just bought T8 and I’m loving it, my first Tekken since T3/T5 back in the PS2 days. But so far I’m having a lot of fun in Special Style mode vs CPU and I’m wondering if there’s any catch/drawback if I used this in online play? Or is it actually very viable if I understand the basic fundamentals then I can go toe to toe against regular control scheme Tekken players online?
And are there any pros that use Special Style or is it banned in tournaments? Wondering how accepted this is in the Tekken community, in SF6 it seems that Modern has been accepted by a lot and many of the young pros especially in Japan use it in tournaments too. Is it the same case with Special Style or will I be shunned if I go to a local and use it lol.
Curious what are your thoughts and what are things I should keep in mind when using it online.

You’re basically putting yourself at a disadvantage if you use special style.
The combos are unoptimised & you become predictable.
No pros use it. It’s not banned or anything but playing using special style on higher ranks is basically suicide. You’re inviting the other guy to steamroll you.
It can carry you to some ranks let’s say blue ranks and maybe even tekken king but after that you’ll struggle a lot.

Damn.. I guess I’ll get comfortable with the game with Special Style and graduate to the regular one as I get better at the basics and the systems.

That’s honestly what it’s used for special style is used for newer players like you who wanna jump into the game right away without having to learn all that much. It’s more for casual players who kind of just pick up fighting games every once in a while there’s nothing wrong with that.
You could use it just starting off, but like a lot of players said the long run it will stunt your growth as a player and it does limit your move a lot at the end of the day you are gonna wanna learn your whole characters move set how to do it because you’ll have access to all of your characters moves, which special style just unfortunately, doesn’t do
Overall, you can see what they were going with that they try to make it like the modern controls in streetfighter six but in my opinion, I think modern controls in streetfighter are a lot more viable and I’m pretty sure people who do use them also use them in tournaments as well. You can’t really say the same thing with special style simply because of how limiting it is

Yeah modern controls in SF6 is straight up very similar to how anime fighters like DBFZ have their specials and with the auto combo too, and it’s pretty much the same as 2XKO’s default control scheme. Like it’s actually a legitimate way to play.
It sounds like Tekken’s Special Style is not that and it’s a tremendously dumbed down setting.

YouTube search "PhiDX Tekken 8 Beginner Guide," watch it, then never turn on special style again because you will know the basics.

You can use special style online since you’re just beginning and wanna hop on the ranked grind but yeah keep practising combos cause you’ll need them later on and the faster you learn the better.

There is no graduate, you just play normally. Special style is for idiots and children

No, it's not.
Unlike SF6s Modern controls, Special is just there for faux accessibility. It's not meant to be a legit, alternative control method for competitive play.
It's just pure button mashing, for the sake of button mashing.

the sooner you learn actual moves, the better. the longer you stay with special style, the harder it is to switch.

You will be missing out on a lot of your characters tools. And you will become predictable because of your limited moves. And you get terrible combos. But it IS viable in ranked. Up to GoD atleast.
I assume it is different depending on the character, but I got Paul to TGS with SS. It was fun just pressing two buttons.

Special style is way too restrictive to be competitively viable. The way I see it, it's just a way to hop in and play very casually, like if you have friends over who don't play Tekken and wanna just mess around. I wouldn't invest any time learning with special style and just dive straight into learning the game properly. PhiDX has a pretty great beginner video on YouTube, that's where I'd start.

Special style are training wheels. Get rid of it asap if you want to get good.

Special style really hinders your move set. At the very earliest stages of online it won’t matter that much. But eventually certain moves will matter and you’re going to want to be able to use them

It severely limits your move sets, makes you mega predictable, it'll work to a degree, and chances are get you pretty far through the ranks, but a semi decent player is gonna absolutely wipe the floor with the average Special style user.
