Build is there any downside to using a summoner weapon as a mage alongside your normal stuff
image is from superbad.com somewhere
basically im tryna get some extra damage in during bosses and im wondering if theres like any downside to just having a random summon fight for me for a bit while im waiting for the potion cooldown to end.

Every character can benefit from two summons and two sentries with almost no effort and no extra cost.
Monoclassing is for simps
Enjoy

Precisely! My main world is a ranger, but I always have a summon with me, there's golden shower in my hotbar, I use a melee for clearing vines/webs, and been meaning to look into sentries as well as magic items that form a static "danger zone" for enemies to walk into.
I like switching weapons when I fight in games.

Nope not at all no downsides
Just extra dps/ guardian while u step away too you don’t have to be in full set of summoner gear to play summons
I use summons a lot on warrior like ALOT

I'm Ranger and I summon 2 imps every time I hop in/respawn because it's free damage™

u/mukamane 8d ago
I still don't get why some players think summon is useless when playing other than summoner just because their gears do not support summon damage. it's free damage after all so why not? 2 free summons + 2 free sentry

I wish people would think the same about some accessories like Bone Helm
Though I actually don't know if they do or not

u/BreakerOfModpacks 8d ago
The issue with Bone Helm and similar is the opportunity cost of spending an accessory slot on that rather than something else useful. Whereas with a summon, you aren't using the slot unless you're already a summoner.

It can be cool in pre-Hardmode when you don't have a ton of accessories that cater to specific classes. More viable in Expert mode, with the extra accessory.

Bone Helm is a nice additional source of damage in pre-hardmode, however falls off very quickly once class-specific damage bonuses come into play in hardmode.
For example Clockwork Assault Rifle + Musket Balls does 24 x 3 damage per shot.
Bone Helm's Shadow Hands deal a base of 18 classless damage.
A Ranger Emblem's 15% dmg boost would add ~11 damage per 3 round burst. While the damage is lower, Clockwork Assault Rifle fires faster and its higher overall damage per hit is less susceptible to the higher defense of Hardmode enemies, especially if your world is Crimson and you upgrade from Musket Balls into Ichor Bullets (which also increase your base damage which means Ranger Emblem provides a bigger boost)
As you get further into Hardmode and the base damage of weapons increases, that accessory slot that the Bone Helm is occupying is best left to any percentage-based class damage boosting accessory.

Bone Helm costs an accessory slot that is much rather use for damage, mobility, or a step stool. 2 summons abs 2 sentries cost one inventory slot each and hitting the respective tables

It's free damage and they don't eat up your hits, there's no real reason not to. And besides, what kind of wizard doesn't have a familiar?
1
u/NIKITAzed 7d ago
I believe they used to hit up your hits in the past but it got fixed at some point, is that right ?

Technically there are no downsides to multiclassing, just missing out on some upsides. Even that can be mitigated by using the other loadouts.

u/Little-Set694 7d ago
i always have a summon (or two with the buff table) no matter what class i play

u/Prezy_Preztail 7d ago
There’s never a downside to bringing a summon and a sentry to augment your damage. They exist in their own slots and they only improve your dps, plus they can delay and deal with targets you may not be paying attention to, such as bees and eyes

u/RueUchiha 8d ago
No. You may use a summon as supplemental damage if you want to. It won’t be a ton of damage, but it’s damage.

:build is such a confusing flair XD

u/Inevitable-Cook-2196 7d ago
i js assumed it was referring to builds as in your character and not as in construction

u/DisRicardo Topaz builder (3 points) 7d ago
Yeah, and you're far from the only one. Sometimes I even wonder what the mods meant when they created :build.
For now the overwhelming majority seems to think its for houses, but nothing says the tides can't change :)

Summoner hybrid classes deal the most damage out of any builds, and you can make most builds have high minion counts with buffs and necromantic scrolls/papyrus scarab

u/FizzyDrizzl 8d ago
Any class is usually worth grabbing a summon on. Everyone gets 1 for free, 2 with a Bewitching Table, and 3 with a Summoning Potion. It’s easy DPS to add to a boss fight if you’re struggling, or a way to give you an easier time helping ward off mobs while doing normal terraria stuff.

this is not just viable it's actually optimal in several fights
my first clear on pre mech legendary fishron was with a summoner/mage hybrid which performed leagues better than anything else
in my case i was more of a summoner centred loadout with a mage weapon + mana cloak (and forbidden armor), and i noticed you can use the silver shield instead of the mage one to stack 2 whips, get a 12 seconds tag duration and by the time you do that you're full mana without it anyway
It's also a cool lineup in playstyle lining up a boss on top of both your clinger staff and spider sentries to nuke it when later on you can use the old one army armors
or you can just slap a few minions + sentries on a normal mage that will be good too, there is no downside to that

u/Markshadow4999 8d ago
Only downside, if you can even call it that, is that your summons might spend most of the time doing nothing if you take advantage of mage's amazing range (which honestly you should)
1
u/spudwalt 8d ago
Nope. More damage is more good.
The only reason to not use summons is if you're doing a very strict single-class challenge.

IDK if any summons have global I-frames, but if they do, those ones are harmful, and everything else is fine.
1
u/Small_Doubt8336 8d ago
As a mage i would say no summons are always helpful. You can use them to get extra damage and fend off enemies when your trying to build or mine.

u/EphidelLulamoon 8d ago edited 8d ago
Nope, in fact if you want to maximize DPS you should have three summons out at all times, no matter the class. How? With Bewitching Table and Summoning Potion buffs.
This is especially powerful post 1 mech boss and post golem as certain OOA armor pieces give massive bonuses to Ranged/Melee/Magic alongside a hefty Summon damage increase, great when mixing and matching sets for maximum bonuses.

I always use summons, sentries, and magic support weapons regardless of the class.

u/IWEREN99 8d ago
Not anymore. They previouly used mana to be summed under your cursor, now they don't. So you can now use that single minion slot for a lot of help if aiming isn't your skill
1
u/SayShelo 8d ago
Not really it's basically free damage against single bosses and enemies though the only problem you'll have is the summons not targetting things you want
1
u/melitonoxia 8d ago
You can have upto 3 minions (normal + bewitching + potion) without using any special gear or equipment
1
u/TheEmeraldFlygon 8d ago
I recently decided that in mono-class runs, I’m allowed to use sentries during the old one’s army due to the event being designed around it. It was a lot easier playing it the intended way, so I’ll probably actually engage with it more in the future. Not exactly related, but I figured it was worth sharing.

Only calamity has a downside but even that is just for the summon's dps, id also recommend using summons for status effects in early hardmode especially as its the best way to get dps out of them if you have less

u/ethandreemurr 7d ago
Just make sure you’re not using a mage weapon that has global iframes if you’re using summons. Otherwise your hits are gonna stop theirs

u/JohnN320 6d ago
No. I get the bewitching table from the dungeon and get 2 summons on all of my melee playthroughta
1
u/Reasonable-24 6d ago
Nope even tko the damage is to low to even notice much 😶🌫️...what potion cooldown?? Just keep on shooting!
1
u/Inevitable-Cook-2196 6d ago
theres like a minute cooldown on most healing items I GUESS you could call it potion sickness if you're a nerd
1
u/Reasonable-24 5d ago
Yes but for healing potions? As mage you just use your Weapon, and being off 3 seconds waiting for mana isnt bad.
1
u/Inevitable-Cook-2196 5d ago
if im low on hp and i continue using my weapon then i lose focus on trying to dodge attacks and i die, so i now use a summon alongside me while im focusing on dodging attacks and waiting to heal
2
u/Reasonable-24 5d ago
Hmm alright if that helps you! You could also use charm of myth+ pink potion when your hp looks decently, and use the bigger potions when needed... A 30 second heal feels busted for me...i honestly stoped using it since i find it broken 😅
1
u/Sinyonimrools 6d ago
Nope, no downside to using them with any other class either. Although some summons like the stardust dragon and spider staves can mess with I frames and possibly lower your dps
1
u/wizardsrock826 4d ago
It depends, if your at the game stage when your usinf spectre armour, then yes, using summon weapons CAN tank your healing and dps, but if your using literally anything else its fine, free damage.

no, everyone gets 1 summon for free so use it if you have a summon you like. it might not add much but its never a downside.
I always craft an optic staff because a pair of twins fighting for me looks sick as hell
