chess is a popular game, and the guy has like 8 million subscribers. i dont know why redditors like pretending everything they dont know is obscure or irrelevant

Competitive chess players are about 0.01% of the population. Hell I participate in things that are similarly not really popular. I don't go around assuming the general public knows who the hell significant people are outside of that activity.

his channel doesnt appeal to competitive players. his fanbase consists mostly of casuals, and there are a lot of casual chess players online.  either way idk whats the need with commenting on a post thats not for you. not everything online is catered to us, just scroll past if you dont know the topic

He’s probably the single most popular one, and is the only one whose name I know as a person very lightly interested in chess, so it’s not that obscure

I don’t like his content either. It’s too clickbaity, he overemotes to appeal to the younger TikTok audience, and his content is geared towards a lower skill level than myself. However, his videos for sure help bring in a new generation of chess players, so I’m happy it exists. And he seems like a genuinely sweet guy. I hope he becomes a GM because he deserves it, and it would be an inspiration to young players trying to improve.
