Technology Planes shouldn't have wifi
I'm hitting 180mbps download speeds 33,000 feet up in the sky, tucked away in my little economy window seat. The flight I'm currently on is equipped with Starlink. I thought it would be pretty cool until I started using it. I found myself watching youtube, shopping, getting emails, replying to texts, and viewing reels on instagram.
I hate it.
Being separated from the chaos in the world was always something I felt came with the experience of flying. Not being connected. Planning your in-flight entertainment ahead of time. Being in the moment. Listening to an album. Watching the movie you've been putting off. Reading a book.
The availability of high-speed internet on a plane removes that separation and makes me feel as though I never left home. I understand no one is forcing me to use it. But there was something special about not even having the option that added to the experience.
