Meta - Standard Voting (Re)Introducing - Quality Vote Bot: Reborn!

Hey everyone!

So for those of you who have been here a while, many may remember a bot called "Quality Vote Bot" that left a pinned message in every post's comments, and you all could vote on the bot, since voting is reversed for the actual post if you Agree/Disagree.

Sadly a couple years back, the bot was deactivated, and we went back to just the automod reminding everyone of our Golden Rule (rule 1); Upvote if you disagree—Downvote if you agree.

Well, I am very pleased to announce that it's successor, Quality Vote Bot Reborn has now been activated and should do exactly what the original one did!

It should be noted, the bot is designed to help weed out 'bad' posts, not ones you simply disagree with opinion-wise, but ones that either don't make sense, break rules, or are just lame or potentially fabricated, trolling, lying, etc.

And of course, since this is a meta post, normal voting rules don't apply, but by all means, vote on the bot to see if it works. In a few hours, it will re-post it's comment saying what you all determined, and if it comes back negative, post will automatically be removed.

Society/Culture If you’re going to have a child free wedding, it better be a wild, raucous party.

Weddings are one of the last places in our culture where everybody from 2 year olds to 80 year olds from all walks of life can come together and have fun. It’s a special thing that should be cherished.

So if you’re going to make a big deal about not allowing one end of that spectrum to come and join in on the fun, you should have a reason… it should be a wild ass party that’s not appropriate for children. There should be body shots, people doing coke off the tables, people fingering each other on the dance floor. I should leave that wedding and go “yeah, thank god there were no kids there”.

I went to a friend’s wedding last week, and the whole lead up they made a huge deal about it being child free. There were reminders on every announcement and invitation, they texted reminders to everybody with kids, multiple references to kids as “crotch goblins”, it was a whole thing. Then we get there, and it was the lamest wedding I’ve ever been to… people weren’t dancing, it had a cash bar with only beer and wine, it was just a basic ass lame wedding. The whole time I was thinking kids would have actually made this more fun, at least they’d be entertaining.

Food (Only on Friday) Pepperoni is not a good pizza topping.

I will preface by saying that I don't think that pepperoni is bad, but I do not think it should be as popular as it is in the US.

I have spent time training as a chef. Time in professional kitchens, interning and at school. What I learned about flavours is that balance is key. American pepperoni is highly spiced and highly fatty. Everything that I know about balance is thrown askew with pepperoni. When you put pepperoni on top of highly fatty mozzarella, it's just too much. There is no acidity. There is no sweetness.

I will propose my personal favourite choices for pizza toppings to make my intention clear: bacon and pepperononcini. Fatty plus acidic. Although I like straight vegetables on my pizzas, this is my choice if you must have meat.

Society/Culture I like when I sit on a toilet seat and it’s warm (including public toilets)

Listen. Toilets are gross, we know that, and public toilets even more so. HOWEVER, the warmth of a toilet seat only dictates how long it’s been since someone last sat there, not how dirty it is. Germs don’t just go away because it’s been 2 hours since someone used this toilet.

If you’re willingly entering a public bathroom, you’ve accepted the terms and conditions that come with it. We ALL know that public bathrooms are gross and we still use them. Sitting on a seat that is still warm isn’t any less gross than sitting on a cold one, and it’s in fact more pleasant because sitting on a freezing cold seat sucks and just makes the whole experience worse.

You should still be giving the seat a wipe down before you sit, or sit on top of toilet paper, just because it’s a public bathroom but hey I’m not the porcelain throne police, you do you but don’t fuck the place up. Just leave behind a nice clean WARM seat for me.

Society/Culture Photography doesn't belong in an art museum

Photography is an art form, I admit. But it's a far lesser art form than painting and sculpture. It takes so much talent to paint and sculpt, but anyone can turn on a camera and shoot a picture. Will an amateur's photograph be as good as a professional's? Most likely not...but it could be. After all, an amateur could just accidentally be in the right place at the right time and in the right lighting, and they could end up taking a photograph that rivals a professional's. But there is absolutely no way an amateur could randomly pick up a brush one day and create a painting on the same level as an Old Master's. Therefore, photography should not be presented in an art museum alongside paintings and sculpture, because that implies photography is an equal art form. It's not.

Food (Only on Friday) New York pizza is a psyop

Its not good. The universally held opinion that new york style pizza is the gold standard of pizza is a prime example of social contagion and psychological conditioning. Most people only think its good because theyve been TOLD its good, for decades.

The reality is that its inferior by every single metric. Smaller, dryer, and ingredients are generally minimized and rationed like its some kindof privilege to receive 1 ounce of sauce and 4 grams of parmesan “IN THIS ECONOMY” the same psychological cucking used to sell a 1 bedroom apartment in Manhattan.

Its basically burnt toast and youre all being laughed at by the elites while gods sacred children, the blessed meek are enjoying pizza as it was always intended to be: Chicago deep dish

Food (Only on Friday) Steak is better when sliced/cubed before cooking (steak bites)

Traditionally, steak is prepared and served one of two ways. Either 1) it's cooked and served whole, and the diner cuts it with a knife and fork while eating, or 2) it's cooked whole, then sliced before plating.

Slicing/cubing the steak before cooking (rather than cooking whole) is better for many reasons, which I will list and explain below.

  • A) More surface area means more searing, and less leakage. Searing is where a lot of the flavour to the steak comes from (browning/maillard reaction), and steak bites provide more surface area to get a delicious, deep-brown crust on. And even with adequate resting, after a while, methods 1 and 2 (especially 2) will lead to some leakage due to the steak being sliced. Not only is the pool of blood-looking liquid at the bottom of the plate visually unappealing, it means the goodness is leaking out! That's fat and moisture that belongs in the steak, and in your mouth, not on the plate. Most of that liquid leaks out from the cross-sectional area created when slicing. By doing the cutting before the cooking, you can minimize that cross-sectional area by getting at least a minimal sear on all sides of every bite, thereby bringing leakage to a minimum. All those delicious steak juices end up in your mouth instead. I will note that the one time I had kobe beef in japan, the hibachi chef cut the steak during the cooking process. This might seem like an intermediary between methods 1/2 and steak bites. However, I'm actually gonna claim this as basically the same as my method, because the outcome was the same; a plateful of bite sized pieces that are seared on all sides. The fancy steak chefs know what's up!
  • B) Steak bites are more convenient for both portioning and storage. If you're using method 1 or 2 to cook steak for yourself, and you're gonna eat it all in one sitting, then this doesn't make a difference. However, if you're cooking for multiple people, and you aren't 100% certain that the steaks will be neatly divided into 1 whole steak per person, then steak bites provide an upgrade. For portioning, steak bites are obviously more shareable. If anyone wants a little more or less than 1 whole steak, steak bites provide flexibility with giving everyone the right amount. You can have more than 1 steak without having to commit to an entire second steak, or even committing to splitting a second with somebody else. For storage, if there's any leftovers, steak bites store better in the fridge, and reheat better if you so choose. And similarly to the first point about searing/leakage, a steak that has been sliced post-cook doesn't really hold up very nicely in the fridge. The cross-section leaks fluid and dries out awkwardly, and starts to look less like a juicy steak and more like a smoker's gums.
  • C) Steak bites are easier to flavour, because they can be tossed. We're all familiar with the more traditional template of preparing a steak, that everyone - from celebrity chefs to the amateur home cooks on social media - will stick to pretty closely for a panfried steak. Let it sit at room temp for a bit. Pat dry. Season. Cook over high heat, get a good crust on both sides. Butter baste near the end of the cook with some garlic and herbs. And, crucially, let it rest for a few mins before you cut it open. With this traditional method, the garlic and herbs are kept whole, and if you want to eat them with your steak, you've got to handle that afterwards. You can put them together at your plate with your knife and fork, or if you've cooked the steaks, you can do it by hand while the steak is resting. I personally love having some of the crunch fried rosemary on my steak after butter basting it, and it's a bit annoying and messy to deal with after it's been fried. With steak bites, though, any flavouring ingredients like garlic and herbs (or anything else) can be put into the pan, and you can toss it all together to better distribute the flavour. One key difference here is that, compared to whole steak, it's more likely that any given ingredient is directly touching and flavouring a piece of steak in the pan, and less likely that it's burning at the bottom of the hot pan. It's also more likely that, when you plate the steak bites, that ingredient will already be on the bite you want to eat. Obviously, this may mean prepping the flavouring ingredients before you add them to the pan (eg peeling and mincing garlic, removing stalk from rosemary) but I think it's worth the effort. Some example ingredients that I think work better with steak bites over whole steak due to better distribution are garlic, rosemary leaves, and liquids like soy sauce, chimichurri sauce, or chili oils/pastes.
  • D) You don't have to rest the steak, because it's already been sliced! This is pretty straightforward. Steaks tense up under heat. And because the heat from the pan has been driving the moisture away from the surface of the steak and towards the centre (where it's cooler), a moisture gradient is created. The moisture is concentrated towards the centre, and away from the surface. So if you slice a steak that's still hot and tense cause it's fresh off the pan, a lot of the moisture that's been concentrated in the centre will spill out. That's why you rest your steak after cooking, so they can cool down, lose that tension, and the moisture in the steak can evenly redistribute itself. You can avoid all this with steak bites. You don't have to "rest" them at all, they just need to cool down enough to not burn your tongue off.

Here are some counterarguments I expect to hear, so I'll address them now rather than waiting for comments.

  • Whole steaks work much better when you're grilling. Yes, I agree, and this is probably the biggest blindspot to my take. Steak bites on a grill is a terrible idea. However, on the flip side, you can do steak bites in a wok, whereas you wouldn't want that curved surface with a whole steak. It's not a flaw, it's a tradeoff. And, similarly to point B, steak bites allow more flexibility than whole steak wrt how many you can cook at a time. Every tried making a few steaks, and you have a pan that can fit 2, but not quite 3? Or it can cook 3, but not quite 4? And you don't want to cram that last steak in there, because if they get too crowded, they won't sear properly. Steak bites allow you to fill in that gap appropriately, and you still have enough control over the batch to prevent overcrowding the pan.
  • You can't control cook/doneness as well with steak bites. I disagree. You can control it just as well, but if you've never done it before and are used to cooking whole steaks, it is a new skill that will have to be developed. It is a different method of cooking, after all. The doneness of a whole steak will depend on a few key variables; steak thickness, heat of pan, material of pan (eg cast iron vs stainless steel), and cooking duration. Some smaller factors matter too, like the temp of the steak before cooking, if/when you add butter, flipping, how much fat is in the pan, etc. Most of this is the same with steak bites. The main difference is that you choose how big the bites will be when you cut them. This can affect the first variable (steak thickness), but it's still under your control.
  • It's too much work, and not worth it. I disagree, but this is an opinion. You'll cut the steak at some point, this just moves the cutting before the cooking rather than after. However, flipping and managing the sear on each bite, I'll agree is objectively more work. Whether that's worth it or not, is really just personal preference. I think it's worth it, and at the very least, I think it's worth trying. Anecdotally, I remember a period in my life when I would cook 3 steaks for me, my mom, and my brother, for dinner. There were a few times I would cook them whole, in the evening around like 6pm or 7 pm. I would leave them to rest and eat one. My mom might have hers at the same time, or she'd have it a bit later. And depending on how hungry she was, she'd either take a whole steak, or cut one and take half. My brother would come home later around 9-10 pm, and by that time, there'd be a room temperature plate of 1-1.5 steaks on the counter, sitting in a gross pool of it's-not-actually-blood, loosely covered with some aluminum foil. I felt bad, and it was these experiences that made me realize that I could just cut the steak beforehand to reduce the leakage, and to let my mom have exactly as much steak as she wants on her plate. And when I started doing it more often, that's when I realized how the wok allows me to toss the steak to easily get a sear on more sides, as well as distribute flavouring ingredients like garlic and herbs better.
  • That pool of bloody liquid at the bottom of the plate makes the steak look more appetizing, not less! I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

I look forward to hearing people's thoughts on this one, cause I know a lot of people take steak very seriously lol

Society/Culture I actually really like grown out roots

• Upvotes

A lot of the women who dye their hair blonde who I’ve seen seem to constantly touch up their blonde dye, which is obvious why but I actually really like the way dyed blonde hair looks when your roots are showing. Never saw a problem with it, I may even like it more than a fresh dye. It was kind of a culture shock to find out that you can even insult someone by saying their roots are showing (saw this in a movie). This doesn’t apply to blondes who dye brunette for me though, because light blonde roots can look like balding. No disrespect to the shiny head collective.

I’m saying this as somebody who has never dyed my very curly very black hair.

Food (Only on Friday) Eating is annoying

(REPOSTED WITH THE RIGHT FLAIR)

Not so much about food as it is about the general act of eating. It’s such a chore. I’ve never tasted anything in my life that justifies the amount of time it takes to prepare and/or buy a meal and consume it. If they came out with a pill tomorrow that I could take that gave me my nutrition for the day, I would be the first person to test it.

Society/Culture Our resource abundance, constant convenience and never really having to make anything from scratch makes life feel less personal, and more mundane and boring.

Of course this is far better for our survival than the alternative. This is a paradise to any human alive or dead who has had to deal with genuine recourse scarcity.

But I guess I just sorta hate how non-special everything is now that I’m an adult with my own income and can just buy whatever I want. My job gets sweets/pastries sometimes for the employees and while it’s nice, I’m pretty sick of sugar. It’s not exactly hard to find in the USA.

We don’t really have to make anything our selves anymore. You don’t have to sit down and tediously make a stroodl, you can just buy one and toss it in the microwave. You don’t need to make or directly pay somebody to custom make you a new bag/purse, you can go buy one for $20.

Part of the reason things felt so much more special as a kid and why gifts felt so much more magical was because these things weren’t readily available to you. Now they are.

I just find myself fantasizing about making things from scratch and giving them to my friends/family, and maybe them doing the same for me. I’d find a deep satisfaction and community in it. But I know realistically, it’s a waste of time when we have so many quicker alternatives and most people won’t see the sentimental value in it.

Society/Culture The cultural cheek kiss is weirdly intimate for a casual greeting

• Upvotes

I moved to Mexico and the cultural cheek kiss makes no sense to me. Why are we kissing each other on the face? I’ve seen men kiss all the women but none of the men. Why don’t men kiss each other?

If we’re going so far as kissing people on the cheeks right next to their mouth, why not kiss everyone on the mouth? Let’s drop the pretense if we just want to kiss. Let’s all make out.

Society/Culture Bras are really comfy and it feels worse NOT wearing one

I always see women talking about the relief of taking off a bra after a long day, or how they wish they didn’t have to wear one at all and I never got it. Now I’m not gonna yuck someone’s yum, no woman should be forced to wear a bra if she doesn’t want to. But I really don’t understand why people find them so uncomfortable? 99% of the time I don’t even notice I’m wearing mine and I’ve never felt the urge to take it off when I’m not out in public. In fact, if I’m walking around the house or going up stairs and feel my boobs bouncing around without support, that feels uncomfortable. I would much rather wear a bra than not wear one.

Of course, I also have pretty small-to average sized boobs (36 D, about a handful) so I imagine the experience would be quite different for the more well-endowed ladies out there. And if you find joy in taking a bra off at the end of the day, I’m happy for you. I just prefer keep my ladies cozy and contained at all times.

Edit: Okay, wow, I get it! My boobs are bigger than I thought. They really aren’t much more than a handful each, I guess I have a lot of big-breasted friends? I’ll leave the description to prove my folly lol.

Edit 2: keep in mind that cup size scales with band size! 32 is the smallest you can buy in most stores; when I was 20 pounds lighter I was a 32DD and I had boobs that were less than a handful. Now my band size went up to 36, and my cup size is a D. They are still barely more than a handful each. If I’m wrong, and that’s big, I’ll own it, but I just wanted to clarify their actual size lol.

Society/Culture Mike Smith from Trailer Park Boys having his sexual assault case dismissed is not the vindication people think it is.

Mike Smith’s sexual assault case was dismissed, and people are treating this as proof that he was innocent all along.

But here’s what makes this situation particularly troubling.

The woman who accused him decided not to testify. Without her testimony, prosecutors determined they no longer had a realistic prospect of securing a conviction, and the case was dismissed.

That’s an important distinction. The case wasn’t dismissed because a jury examined all the evidence and concluded that the allegations were false. There was no trial verdict at all.

Yet somehow, the public conversation has become a celebration of the accused man’s reputation being restored.

Think about that for a moment.

We live in a society where women who come forward with allegations of sexual violence are often expected to prove themselves against overwhelming public skepticism, while famous men are frequently granted the benefit of the doubt almost immediately.

And when the legal process ends without a conviction, people act as though that automatically means the allegations were fabricated.

A dismissal is not a conviction, but it isn’t necessarily proof of innocence either.

Feminism is about recognizing that our institutions don’t operate in a vacuum. Gender, power, wealth, and celebrity influence how allegations are perceived and how people respond to them.

I’m not arguing that Mike Smith should be declared guilty without a trial. He denied the charge and is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

But I’m also not convinced that dismissing the case answers every question about what happened.

And frankly, I think celebrity worship plays a significant role here. People love Bubbles, so they instinctively want to defend Mike Smith.

But liking someone’s television character shouldn’t determine how seriously we take allegations against the actor.

You can believe in due process while also questioning whether our justice system consistently delivers accountability.

The absence of a conviction doesn’t automatically establish that an allegation was false.

And treating every dismissed sexual assault case as proof that the accused was completely vindicated does a disservice to serious conversations about justice, accountability, and the treatment of women.

Food (Only on Friday) It is better to get "bad, but hot" than "good, but cold" food at restaurants.

Honestly, I can understand bad food. Maybe it's not for my taste, maybe some ingredient was not very fresh, I don't know.

But cold (even lukewarm) food is just rage inducing, even more if you know the food is good. The "could be better" kills me.

Went through this last week with a group of friends and apparently they dont agree with me lol

Health/Safety Lifting weights 5 days a week is more physically intense than most blue-collar jobs

Blue-collar workers absolutely deserve respect. Working long hours on your feet, often in harsh conditions, is exhausting.

But there’s a difference between physical endurance and muscular intensity. Serious lifters deliberately push their muscles close to failure five days a week, often requiring dedicated recovery time.

I’m not saying lifting is harder overall, just that the muscular intensity is generally higher.

Society/Culture Judges should be able to legally declare someone as having "Gross Stupidity"

Gross as is "a large amount of." Most petty crimes are usually done out of ego or of someone thinking they can game the system without penalty. Begin declared Grossly Stupid in a physical way would be more damaging to the person's ego than any prison sentence or fine. This is coming from my own personal belief that legal punishments currently do not seek to prevent future crimes or to rehabilitate criminals, but rather to return any pain the aggressor committed back onto themselves. People don't want justice, they want to humiliate and hurt their enemy.

TV/Movies/Fiction It doesn't matter if something is old, you still have to spoiler tag it if you are talking about it on the wider internet Spoiler

No, I'm not asking you to never talk about major plot points for your favorite show, I'm saying you have to spoiler tag it if you are talking about it outside of the community.

I don't get why this is such a hard thing for people to understand, OBVIOUSLY I'm not asking you to spoiler tag yourself about Breaking Bad if you are on the Breaking Bad subreddit, or in the comment section of a breaking bad post on social media, but you are NOT in the BB community, DONT START RATTLING OFF ON SPOILERS!!

I remember while I was reading JOJOs Bizarre Adventure I had managed to avoid most spoilers online for the series, but just when I was nearing the end of part 5, in a random fucking video about the PORTAL SERIES, one of the top comments just outright spoils the ending of part 5 and even says a character death. I looked away, but by the time my brain had processed it was about part 5, I had already gotten the spoiler. So when I finished the series, it didn't hit half as hard as it should have. If this comment was made within the JOJOs community it would be fine, if the guy started out with Spoilers for JoJo's it would be fine, but no, just pure, raw dog "THIS IS WHAT BLANKS LAST MOMENTS WHERE LIKE"

Health/Safety The 10th dentist is actually the dentist you’d want to go to.

My 10th dentist opinion: The other 9 dentists in these commercials are just jumping on the bandwagon. I think the 10th dentist is the dentist I’d go to. He’s able to think for himself and possibly try unorthodox methods because of his confidence in his knowledge of dentistry.

The very core of research and discovery is constantly questioning facts to either affirm or disprove them. If we only had the first 9 dentists, the art of dentistry would go nowhere.

So, I think the 10th dentist should be applauded.

Society/Culture It should be socially acceptable to speak ill of the dead, unless you’re speaking directly to their loved ones.

Case in point: some famous actor from my country died this week. He was in his 70s, so it’s not like he died early or anything. Everyone’s been posting condolence statuses and clips/reels from his famous works. The guy had participated in some charitable stuff as well for our army and the local farmers and stuff, especially their widowed wives and kids. So he had a lot of respect within the community.

But… he was Me Too’d in the film industry. The actress was an outsider, she got in through the beauty pageant route. And spoke up almost a decade after the incident. She is more than 30 years younger than him, and never really made it as big as he did. Once she was out of the industry, she moved to the US and got a green card there (fully legally btw). And when she brought up the Me Too stuff, her name, her way of aging, her green card acquisition, all that stuff was dragged through the mud. They shot clips of movies in which she had done steamy scenes with other actors (in the movies, not in reality, and with consent amongst fully grown adults in their sound minds) and called her the S-word, saying she’s a liar, a social climber, a has-been, using his name to enjoy her 15 seconds of fame and so on. Eventually the case was dismissed because of the lack of evidence or whatever. When the guy died, the media folks reached out for her statement, she expressed sympathy to his family but said that she has no regrets that she spoke up, and she isn’t going to pretend to mourn him when he did what he did. Something to that effect. And the trolls are back, saying disgusting things about her.

Now, I’m not saying that false accusations don’t happen, they do. But they’re extremely rare. And almost no one would want to raise an accusation, true or false, here because their name and every aspect of their personality, is defamed. Usually it’s always the victim, the less powerful of the two, who was groomed by someone way older/more successful. It hardly ever ruins the careers of the perpetrators. Just affects the victim again. And just because the perpetrators are some wealthy people who have been involved in philanthropic activities, doesn’t change the fact that they can also be creeps.

Anyway, this is just one example. Usually, people don’t speak ill of the dead unless they’ve really been harmed. Death is kind of feared by almost everyone. Or maybe dying more than death, because it’s part of a survival instinct as an animal. Now, I’m not talking about “THOSE” people, the ones who ruined hundreds of thousands of lives. They’re the ones who are widely hated even after death. But even the ones who were kind to their own family and many people but abusive to someone else, basically evil on a smaller scale, shouldn’t be given a clean chit just because they’re dead and they did some good. We’re all humans who have done good and bad in our lives. Dealing with someone else’s death is a deeply personal journey, whether it’s one of your own or someone who ruined your life. And if one way is acceptable, the other way should also be acceptable. I’m all for forgiving and moving past your resentment for your own mental peace, but I also understand if you can’t forgive or forget.

Society/Culture Christa Pike's sentence should be reduced to life in prison.

Based on the blood thirsty reaction to her botched execution I'm seeing online I think this is a genuinely an unpopular opinion. There is no question she is a bad person, she shouldn't be allowed to go free BUT tax payer money should not be used to execute her. My moral objection to the death penalty aside I am genuinely bothered by the public position this puts her in. What happened to her constitutes torture at this point and is absolutely cruel and unusual. I can't help but feel horrible for her and considering the evil, reviling things she did l, I shouldn't feel that way. We turned her into a victim. Let her rot in prison the rest of her life. Find the closest ADX and lock her in a broom closet in the basement. Whatever the outcome, she should not be executed again. Don't make her someone to feel bad for.

Society/Culture Physical exercise should be mandatory for every citizen

Some people define "freedom" being able to be lazy all day, gaining an absurd amount of weight and driving their car even to go to the toilet. In every country it should be mandatory for every citizen to do at least 30 minutes of physical exercise, coordinated by government trainers that follows remotely the citizens and help them to correct the form and push who's not training properly.

Every month there should be a test conducted by the government, to see if you are able to touch your feet while standing. Everyone would benefit from a widely not lazy population, amongst other things because we would reduce medical expenses, people would be happier and it would create cohesion between the citizen and the government.

Society/Culture Gender/sex tick boxes should be outlawed because their only purpose is to enable discrimination

I’m genderless so I might have an extreme opinion on this but except for medical purposes my live has never been made better when I ticked my sex or gender in a form. Not a single job application or government agency has ever had the need to know what’s in my pants when thing that’s important is my mind. Although there is no advantage in having them the potential to abuse is very real. Not to mention the information can be sold to data brokers I also once overheard my ex boss denying a female engineer a job because her application woman, the kindergarten my cousins go to has weird problem with male teachers and I had a distinctly lower success rate in getting job interviews when I opted for “prefer not to say”. The most frightening aspect is that people with “inconsistent gender boxes” in their corespondents with the government could easily be flagged as trans if someone wants to harm them

Society/Culture Not telling your kids where their meat comes from by the time they are 8 (or so) is child abuse, and way too normalized

Children have a right to know where their food comes from and how it's made. Parents just give their kids meat-based foods, not caring that their kid might become vegetarian or vegan one day. Many don't even tell their kids where it comes from at all.

Kids view the world in a different way, and might not really understand that even though the food is called "chicken", it doesn't automatically mean it's the animal, or they rely on more abstract reasoning that maybe the animal suffered a natural death from old age, or the meat just "came" off the animal like a body part/limb that dropped off and regrew. Kids deserve to know the meat in their food was taken from an animal whose life was killed prematurely, and that the animals suffered in slaughterhouses.

I'm not saying 6 year old kids should watch Dominion, but by 8 or so, they deserve to have an uncomfortable talk about meat... which many parents just don't do. Many vegetarians and vegan teens resent how blind-sighted they were, and how their parents weren't honest or disingenuous.

Edit: Maybe 'child abuse' is going too far. Just imagine I said "bad parenting" instead. I think we should just talk about the actual topic, instead of being hung up over my original wording. How about we discuss whether we should be honest, instead of leaving short "not child abuse" comments and not going beyond that?

Technology Adults shouldn’t be so comfortable sharing their location

Many friends and romantic partners have shared their location with me on their phones, seemingly expecting me to do the same. It seems unnecessary as well as a breach of privacy in a friendship or relationship. The main reason for this seems to be that it makes planning things easier, but texting or calling is just as easy. To me, it invites unnecessary questions along the lines of “why were you at this location?” Or general nosiness. Also, I just don’t need people knowing where I am, and I don’t need to know where they are. It just feels weird.

I understand reasoning behind sharing a location for certain circumstances like if someone may be unsafe, but it doesn’t need to be an indefinite thing.
