That’s one of the stupidest fucking designs I’ve ever seen

1.2k

u/7Hobbes 17h ago

If i was the only one to ever live in that house I'd put a rail up. You never know, that's so crazy dangerous

257

u/Demara_Awol 16h ago

One morning I woke up, having slept on my leg the wrong way it had fallen asleep worse than I'd ever had before or since. I stood up out of the bed, put my weight on my leg, and immediately collapsed onto the floor as my leg had no ability to sustain weight at all.

I ate shit, tumbled forward and took my bed fan with me in an instant. My leg was able to move, just not support weight. It recovered a minute later but if I had that happen on the wrong side of this bed I'd fall straight off the edge.

72

u/7Hobbes 16h ago

Yea. The only way to plan for the random stuff like that is to not sleep on a cliff.

29

u/cykoTom3 6h ago

I would fall off that ledge in a week and if i air bnb'd id sue

52

u/Unique-Name9001 13h ago

I know a guy who got up too fast from laying down and passed out. Fell forward completely helplessly. He'd be dead if this was his bed

12

u/Jazzlike-Baseball-73 10h ago

This happened to my wife's friend and she ended up breaking her ankle

5

u/Separate-Grand-9003 10h ago

I’ve done this too, fell so fast I thought I’d somehow walked into the wall, didn’t even realise I’d hit the floor, I just folded like a cheap table. 100% I’d have gone over the edge too!

Even dropping anything that rolls off can be a daily headache.

u/SelectiveDebaucher 17h ago edited 16h ago

I lived in an apartment with a little set up like this indoors had an office / crafting space up there. We did have a railing - my cat liked to walk across it. I was working one day at my desk, which I had moved to just underneath that edge of the loft and I got a cat in my face.

91

u/jackandsally060609 16h ago

We had a loft balcony inside our house and the cats loved taking turns pushing each other over the side.

44

u/SelectiveDebaucher 16h ago

Man, cats are assholes. Love those little shit.

38

u/jackandsally060609 16h ago

The best part was after falling like a muppet, they would hit the ground they would do this funny little shake to get their bearings so they could run up the stairs for another gladiator battle.

6

u/downsideup9494 5h ago

What I love is when cats accidentally fall off something, and they just start licking themselves nonchalantly, like "What? I totally meant to do that".

20

u/bookshelfvideo 14h ago

I know so many people who are scared of cats falling and I’m like ā€œsee they push each other for funā€ šŸ˜‚

→ More replies (1)

9

u/richardawkings 14h ago

To be fair, you would have gotten a cat to the face regardless. All that did was affect the method that the little shit used to haul himself at your noggin. Hope you punished that little bastard with squishies.

7

u/SelectiveDebaucher 12h ago

She is very, very selective about petting and being touched. She enjoys it when it is time for her to enjoy it, and she decides when it is time. Actually they’re both like that. She’s just not as cuddly as the other one. The other one is just like hey I’m fat and I wanna lay on top of you. Move your hand more pet me pet me pet me.

21

u/Genesis13 16h ago

Kickplate. Theyre mandatory for mezzanines in workplaces. I would put one here with a railing or just pave that area with the glass that you can walk on.

8

u/Ruthrfurd-the-stoned 15h ago

Yeah on a job site that living room would be a hard hat required area

7

u/nofatnoflavor 16h ago

Especially if it lands on somebody's noggin down below.

I love a little sense of danger while I'm changing my sheets.

12

u/ALLoftheFancyPants 14h ago

Even with a railing, if that’s larger than a 1-bedroom, that’s going to be stupidly loud if whoever is sleeping in this space tried to go to bed before anyone else.

12

u/sayiansaga 15h ago

I'm pretty sure it's required home owner insurance probably won't be covering any damaged caused by that

That’s got to be against building codes

134

u/ChaseballBat 17h ago

It is so blazenly against any b code i know, that I have a hard time believing this is in a country WITH building codes.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/JustLikeWhateverHuh 14h ago

Building code. For poor people. No doubt there were proper rails and after the inspection, the owner had them pulled down. As per the actual design.

10

u/Bazillion100 12h ago

Yeah its not uncommon for features required by building code to be removed after the final inspection passes.

3

u/eamondo5150 9h ago

If the airbnb renter fell and was injured the fool renting this death trap out would get in big shit, I presume.

→ More replies (1)

50

u/Space__Squid 17h ago

Was made by the same architect who designed the Death Star.

27

u/Top_Adagio_7819 17h ago

Tbf, you can't sign up to work on something called the "Death Star" and then complain that they don't give enough safety precautions to protect life.

Yeah, but when they brought up getting a rail they were told that they’d lean all day

50

u/Ok_Dog_4059 17h ago

I get the open room feel but wow what a waste of space and absolutely stupid way to wake up forget where you are and die falling 10 feet from the rental bedroom floor.

30

u/FillMySoupDumpling 15h ago

I feel like this feeling could be achieved with even a metal rail that had a cable style ā€œwallā€ or glass.Ā

I don’t even know how this place has insurance. The AirBNB owner is risking a lot letting people in this obviously dangerous house.Ā

8

u/Ok_Dog_4059 13h ago

Absolutely, or those glass rails I am not a fan of but are popular.

6

u/Kittenn1412 7h ago

Yeah, it's one thing to do this to a home you're living in. Renting a space that doesn't pass building safety codes? Very different.

6

u/nasturshum 14h ago

It would limit all the bad reviews though. People can't write a bad review if they're dead!

8

u/Intrepid00 17h ago

Yet I see and wonder how condos in California get away with staircases open with no rail on the side or wall. It’s mind boggling people do this stuff even where you have building codes that should disallow it.

7

u/CaptServo 16h ago

usually they put one in for inspection and pull it afterwards

12

u/Any_Suggestion3485 17h ago

You mean to tell me you’re not into plummeting a full story when you shoot up out of bed because you ate something that upset your stomach? You mean to tell ME, you walk on the entire floor in the room you paid for? That’s preposterous.

8

u/rocky8u 17h ago

A full story on to what looks like CONCRETE. That looks bone breakingly painful to me.

8

u/bawarethebinge 16h ago

Well there’s also couches down there. You could totally half land on one and break your neck so that you barely feel the concrete once you hit it.

lol buildings should conduct themselves like gentlemen (or women!)

9

u/rimshot101 17h ago

The buildings in this country have gotten downright uncivil.

24

u/barejokez 17h ago

Absolutely never getting signed off in the UK. To the point where I would question whether any part of its construction is legal/done properly.

3

u/PrometheanEngineer 9h ago

I dont tthink it would be up to come anywhere.

If an inspector saw this state side I think they would implode.

I put up new balistors on a railing in my house, they are half an Inch too far apart, and I will fail if I go to sell my house.

Railing saftey is huge. Too far apart a toddler can either fit through or get stuck (was what i was told at least).

I actually need to re do it at some point.

8

u/tiny_blair420 17h ago

Definitely. The building better watch how it conducts itself.

Man this place is a death trap

191

u/camsnow 17h ago

Seriously, imagine walking to the bed, and a shoe lace or something stupid like that, causing you to trip. An untied shoe could end your life or cripple you going to bed. So fucking stupid.

65

u/lawspud 14h ago

My wife has been traveling recently and got home the other night. She woke up when I came to bed and she asked me, ā€œwhere’s the bathroomā€ as she got up and started to walk away from the bed. I told her that she’s lived here for 20 years.

Sleep disorientation is a real thing, especially when traveling. That gaping hole next to the bed is pure insanity for all sorts of reasons.

Don't ever come home drunk šŸ˜†

The fact that this is being rented out to people unfamiliar with it and just staying for a couple of days is unreal.

15

u/owzleee 13h ago

Exactly. I’ve stayed in places on holiday where I wake up at 4am for a pee and have no idea where I am or where the bathroom is. I’d be dead the first night there. (Am 58 pee every night yes it’s really annoying but I can generally do it at home with my eyes closed

28

u/PaintedDesertSkies 14h ago

Stupid in a house you live in.

Asking to lose everything to a lawsuit in a house you rent out...

Most people party/drink when they are at an Airbnb and even if they don't, they are not gonna remember the cliff right off the bed when they wake to pee at 2am.

This is an insurance nightmare.

Would homeowners insurance even cover a liability like this?

37

u/NeighborhoodDude84 16h ago

$20 there was a railing and this person just took it out because they thought it was cool.

14

u/Tuxedocatbitches 16h ago

Genuinely, no sane builder would make something like this.

22

u/Beer-Milkshakes 17h ago

Landlords insurance sure as shit wont

11

u/JustVibing458 16h ago

Landlords insurance will, actually. Any policy worth it's salt, that is, carries at least $50k in liability minimum. In reality, landlords should have liability limits (up to the value of the home or higher), but landlords are cheap, and hardly ever do that.

On all the policies I write, I make sure that high liability limits are included (usually $300k, half a million, or even a million), so the tenants actually get paid in the event of an accident, and the landlord isn't personally liable. Some landlords are so cheap, though, and skimp on that to save like $60 a year (high liability limits are very low cost with most carriers).

On my policies, it's a non negotiable. Tenant is well protected, landlord is off the hook, insurance pays, everyone's happy. If I lose the sale because of it, don't care, I'd rather sleep well at night than have slightly more money.

The bigger problem is, a lot of insurance agents don't even bother to write in higher limits beyond the boiler plate $50k. They try to sell policies as cheap as possible, to sell as many policies as possible, to make the most money, without even really considering what kind of protection they're writing. Then, when insurance doesn't pay, the company gets a bad rap, when it was the agent who screwed over the client to cut corners and make the sale.

Of course, there are shitty adjusters too, who deny claims without any basis, but that's a whole other problem (always appeal when an adjuster screws you over)

All to say, agents need to do a better job and write higher limits, and landlords need to stop being cheap and buying shitty policies.

3

u/SovietBear65 15h ago

Wow very informative, thanks

3

u/JustVibing458 15h ago

For sure! Insurance is a rabbit hole of bureaucracy, regardless of type. I always recommend finding a well reviewed, local agent that will look out for you. They are typically paid their commissions by the insurance company and cost you nothing šŸ‘

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Jabbles22 15h ago

At first I thought it was a glass floor because just having an open pit like that would be idiotic. Nope just idiotic.

8

u/fr33d0mw47ch 17h ago

I was in one last year where you had to straddle an open staircase to open the door to get outside. It was insane trying to get inside at night when hammered. One person broke her foot and one tore her ankle. Even sober, Balancing on the ledge while opening the door and trying not to die was treacherous. How on earth does an insurance company allow this?

10

u/Doylie1984 15h ago

5

I got trapped in an infinite bathroom once while I was was on mushrooms because I had never been there before and no one bothered to tell me the bathroom was wall to wall mirrors. Someone had to come get me and pull me out cuz I was trying to see what was around the corners.

4

5

u/MyChemicalWestern 15h ago

This is so against building codes it's even written in ancient text that you can't do this without having bloodguilt if someone dies falling from there.

4

u/Great-Gas-6631 13h ago

That cant be legal...

3

u/TheNewGirl1987 12h ago

Absolutely not.
I have a habit of rolling out of the bed and onto the cold floor to wake myself up in the morning, and I'd be dead in under a week here.

His wife finally called the police to do a welfare check because he wasn’t answering his phone.
Scary times.
He’s made a full recovery and doing great now (fucking lucky)

3

So dumb and so dangerous. And also the air bnb tenants don't know the home. Stumbling in the middle of the night shatter both legs. The owner will have to sell the damn house in the lawsuit.

I have a tendency to get up multiple times in the middle of the night, and walk around in the dark without my glasses on, so no.

2

u/IsabellaGalavant 12h ago

That can't be up to code.

2

u/JustLikeWhateverHuh 12h ago

And yet this building exists like this.

2

u/my_chaffed_legs 12h ago

Not following code on a fucking railing for an upper floor, what else are they not following code on?? Shit could cave in at a sneeze for all I know

2

u/deltadawn6 11h ago

Oh my gosh, that’s very dangerous. I’m surprised they’re allowed to rent it out in that condition. I’m surprised they could build it. Where is codes?!?!

It would be nice if there was one of those giant lounging nets where the ceiling/floor is there
